First FM15 feature revealed: Twitch Integration

Recommended Posts

Actually - that's not a bad idea at all is it?

Saves users the faff of uploading a .pkm somewhere and others from the (minor) faff of downloading it and viewing it.

You could also watch a match live to not only see the initial set up, but the match management of the player.

Hmmm.

Not only that, but explain why a certain roles are a good/bad choice and point out particular examples of why, as it happens.

I don't see it like that at all Kenco.

It would be there as a helping hand in understanding the tactics and why some choices should not be made if others are in place, I don't think it should be seen as an IWIN button.

I was more thinking along the lines of an edited video of them playing the game with some helpful insights into the game and how they approach different in game situations, no 2 games of FM are the same but learning the basics of the tactics with some useful tips would always be welcomed no?

I'm just saying that's how a lot of FM players will see it, not me personally. You know the type who blame everyone else for their failings at the game and not themselves, they will just blame Cleon and wwfan for giving them bad advice, even if they take it the wrong way and especially if that advice is built into the game.

This would actually be a very good idea, although a lot of people who have these problems probably don't even watch the match!

What I wondered about Twitch, YouTube, video stuff in general was this:

Lots of people are (probably rightly) complaining that the in-game level of documentation / visibility of what each Role, Team Instruction, Player Instruction does is unclear. If you can be bothered to look outside of the game and in these very forums you can find all the answers, but it should be more accessible.

I wonder if clips can be embedded in the game at some point that show what the PPM Comes Deep To Get Ball actually looks like. What does the movement of a Winger on Attack look like? How can I see the difference between different Fluidity and Mentality settings etc. etc.?

Obviously, everyone is aware that this stuff is too contextual to be definitively captured in a single clip. Seeing a Winger in isolation is nice, but it doesn't show how he performs in a Fluid Philosophy and Defensive Mentality alongside a DLP (Support) where you have a Team Instruction of x, y and z applied, or if the AI is man marking him, but it might be semi-useful.

It solves 0% of issues unsatisfied FM 14 players had with the game. It's like treating an AIDS with cough syrup. I'm sure from the commercial point of view this move makes a lot of sense, but it would be way more "sensitive" from SI if the first announcement wasn't something that has no effect on gameplay whatsoever. I do understand that game is/will be improved, and we will hear about new gameplay features soon.

Having said that, twitch is awesome

I'm sorry, it's maybe due to a language barrier, but I just got an e-mail saying the documentary will be available on Twitch as "pay-per-view" few days later the 7th of October.

"[...]This means the new FM15 features video will be screened first on Twitch, followed by the live Q&A. Finally, the documentary will be available to view on Twitch as 'pay per view' a few days later [...]"

Does it really mean I have to pay in order to watch this "documentary" already went public?

Looks like it to me- at the moment the documentary is going to be on at selected cinemas, which means people are paying. This is watching that same documentary through Twitch, so it's also something you have to pay for.

At last my english is awful but not that awful. But you know, those people go to cinema, sit on their chairs, watch the movie, have a post-documentary with a Q&A session, meet some famous people from SI, having a glimpse to the new release. All this before anyone else and LIVE. I won't pay a shilling for having one third of all I mentioned above, for things that will be known in zero time, some days later. I understand this commercial move, but... it was said the documentary would have been available on the web for all non UK residents that couldn't attend any show (for obvious reasons). Few days ago a deal with Twitch was announced. Result: documentary on Twitch as pay per view. I would like to watch it, but I will certainly survive without it and even it's an understandable move by SI, I must confess it's disappointing. Oh well, until I'm free to chose how to spend my money, everything's fine I assume :)

and all the features will be announced here (probably within the hour) anyway, so whatevs

and it might be pay-per-view with only UK residents (not quite sure how you'd do that, but hey) given that us foreigners can't watch it at the cinema anyway

The documentary is pay-per-view, the new features videos are free. Both will be on Twitch.

Maybe I'm just old now, but I never got the whole Twitch thing. Kind of like a shady, voyeuristic thing. Bit odd.

I'm sure this may a great "feature" for some, but I hope some of the others appeal to me more!

October 7th isn't too far away, so I'll keep an eye out for that feature video.

I must be even older, what the hell is Twitch? :D

Is this what they are putting their effort into?

If only they had some competition. :(

Cant tell if trolling or serious...

At any rate LOL at thinking this is even a major feature for this years game.. This probably took 0,5% of the development time/resources to put in. How people can work themselves up over such a minor thing, when we havent even seen the reel reveal of the new features yet is beyond me..

Totally agree pointless to me this twitch thing I hope in a more robust trade market and simplified tattics and training + some better media interaction.

We will see IF is worth pre-order or llike the past years dish out half finish game and wait till January to patch up and make playable.

No. It's likely what an intern or single resource put some of their effort into. I trust that clears things up.

Their marketing team will be the ones who put the effort in. That's the whole purpose of this twitch thing. Nothing to do with the game itself and the reason it's announced as the first big feature is to get people signing up for the actual presentation video.

But the actual work in hooking in the Twitch API to the game itself will have been dev work, most likely "busy work" for one person. I doubt it took more than a few days.

Yeah. As I said, the actual effort would have been the marketing stuff. It's a gimmick that serves a purpose of promoting both the game and the twitch brand. Just like twitter or facebook integration (does anyone actually have a use for either of those?)

I'd never even heard of twitch before this and though I'll never use it they've already succeeded by making me along with several other people aware of its existence.

Ah, I misunderstood your original post, apologies. Yeah, you're spot on. More effort will have gone into marketing the feature - or more accurately marketing the game itself, using the feature - than actually adding the feature itself.

Do you think people will watch Football Manager on Twitch?

Well I wouldn't watch it. Couldn't think of anything more frustrating than watching someone move around their mouse playing FM. Would rather play it than watch someone else play it.

Hmmm.

You could see managers who play naked as well... ;) a lot of girls are playing FM nowadays, this could be a soft porn new frontier.

It will be a good way to advertise the new interface/features to people who might want to see the game in action - depending on what SI's adding this year that'll be better than just a five minute "This is the new Dynamic Blahdeblah" video.

Past a "shop window" kind of thing right after the release I can't imagine too many people bothering with it too much. The real joy in FM is seeing narratives play out over the long term - building up a club, watching your most frustrating signing finally justify his transfer fee - and while I know some people take the tactical side more seriously than I do I can't imagine they want to watch someone's cup final out of context either.

Watching FM on twitch is fun. Maybe I'm different, but I never just sit down and play FM. I listen to music, watch tv or youtube, whatever. I like watching people like workthespace streaming on twitch, i put it on in the background when I play. Good tunes, good commentary. It is a good time.

This seems to me like an alternate way for what it used to be the 'learn how to play from watching your friends' way. I remember that's how I learned to play back in the day. But watching some random guy playing a game that basically consists of waving the mouse doesn't sound very appealing.

I don't know any of my friends, colleagues who is playing FM, so seeing live people playing it on video, sharing comments, learning hints etc is very refreshing. And it is different from viewing and posting to the forums. And different from Lets Plays, because the stream goes Live (although I have seen one reloading after loss...). Sometimes, when I don't have inspiration to load FM, I fire up Twitch and the desire to play is back.
