well, i didnt expect to get much from this game and theres certainly lots of positives to take from this performance ( though i hope Sturridge isnt badly injured ) we need to sort out the left side and more practice on defending set pieces, i think we can still qualify, but we really have to win both remaining games

Local circumstances be damned, England looked worn out minutes after the start of the 2nd half. No other team has looked this way so far. Preparation?

Lots of effort, but ultimately not good enough. Rooney, Johnson and Gerrard choked tonight. Sterling is the future, and the England side should be built around that kid.

The sad thing is, that we#ll continue to see Rooney in an England shirt for another 5 years. Why? Sponsors - even though he doesn't perform when it matters.

this was the first game played in manaus. conditions markedly different than most of the other sites.

We're so unbalanced with Rooney in that side. We either have to play him up front (which would mean changing formation or dropping Sturridge, so let's not do that) or we drop him (let's do that). He's not been good enough for England for a very long time, we have players on much better form who can play in their natural positions, yet we spend so much time and effort trying to fit Rooney in somewhere and it's just hurting the team.

Drop him.

'Assuming' we beat Costa Rica, a draw would probably be enough in the Uruguay game.

it's a good point this. assuming Italy beat CR

Ita 6

CR 3

Eng 1

Uru 1

Uruguay smashing Italy aside, we go through with a win.

playing somebody who can actually play on the left would be a good idea

Henry nailed it early on.

England always pick the best players but they do not select the best players for the positions, Rooney on the left and for the first half doing more tracking back than anything else.

Has been a problem for England for years.

Whoever loses the next game goes home.

According to the FM researchers Rooney is theese two teams has got.......according to what everyone else sees Pirlo is for the 10th year in a row one of the 5 best players in the world.

Goes further than that, we also pick the squad with the best players (or most hyped players), rather than defining a style or system and picking the best players for that. Means we're always going to be unbalanced and we never get a fluid understanding or set way of playing because of the different personnel we have.

at times in the first half we looked alright going forward through sturridge, welbeck and sterling. defensively we looked **** on the left hand side, mainly due to baines not getting enough protection.

rooney was absolutely dire..like, wow.. bad.

So ill risk a million angry quotes but i don't get the sterling wankfest, he was nothing special at all. Although there were obviously a number of players much worse.

Rooney's 4th tournament doing absolutely **** all, shock horror.

Not angry, just pointing and laughing.:D Best player in an England Shirt.

Don't get the Rooney hate, he was nowhere near our worst player tonight. Gerrard, Henderson, baines and Johnson were all far worse.
Johnson was ok, I was shocked too, Baines was exposed by Rooney and Welbeck's poor defending, Henderson was ok, Gerrard poor. Rooney did nothing apart from the assist.

Pretty much what I said. :D

You guys always select the best players but not the players to suit the system.

God help if you guys ever have 7 top strikers, you will select them all and play a couple as holding midfielders.

Really shouldn't overly kneejerk to that performance, Italy weren't exactly hammering the goal - although they were more comfortable in possession we did have some good chances and for such an inexperienced squad, looked pretty good going forward. No issues with Centrebacks or Goalie either.

And FFS it's Italy and super-Pirlo.

Italy looked just as knackered, if not moreso.

Pirlo just looked like he was out for an evening stroll

Rooney looked as if somebody had stuck him in a cooker for 90 minutes
