Or people like Tradition. Everyone knows that royalty have a lot of wealth and most people (In my experience) are ok with it.

A lot of people aren’t though are they? Or at least ambivalent towards it or just don’t think about it. Do you think it’s fair that they have that much money?

So much of what people consider tradition is often not really that old either.

The whole ceremony and aura around the British monarchy only really been around about 150 years. It was very much something that developed in the Victorian era.

Yeah if Blackadder the Third is anything to go by, people HATED George IV, who is described in his party newsheet as "a great moral and spiritual leader of the nation", but is described by almost everyone else as "a fat, flatulent git".

Setting aside things like this, The Antigua and Barbuda Reparations Support Commission summed it up well in their recent open letter to the visiting representatives of the Monarchy:

Quote

"The British Royal Family continue to live in splendour, pomp and wealth attained through the proceeds of the crimes.

“We know that the British Crown, both as royal family and as institution, is historically documented as an active participant in the largest crimes against humanity of all time,”

They symbolise a racialised and class-privileged social order. They aren't apolitical either.

We also have the case of Prince Andrew, who has surely damaged people's faith in the concept of justice.

The royals also have a long history of barbarism when it comes to animals.

The list goes on...

Fairness is highly subjective.

It is probably not fair but the alternative to the monarchy will probably be rich. Will that be any fairer?

It’s the inherited wealth that I (and many others) have a problem with. If you work hard, pay all your taxes etc etc etc most people are fine if you earn decent money. They are rich literally because of who their family is (yes, I know this applies to many other non royal families too). Many people get a little money when family members die but very few of us get even more access to obscene wealth, a few more palaces and to be head of state when a parent dies.

I'm indifferent to the monarchy. I think it's all a bit silly but I don't care enough to advocate that we end it.

I think my concern would be if we were ending the monarchy then you would have to consider the government - whilst the Queen doesn't get involved, she is essentially the boss, take that away and there is a void that needs to be filled, that would give MPs to rewrite how things work and they would surely take the opportunity to try and seize additional powers. That would be bad

Yes. The central idea that it's ok for someone to be born into the top job is fundamentally opposed to any ideas of fairness, egalitarianism and meritocracy.

Consider also how much land in Britain that the monarchy and their various hangers on in the aristocracy own. These people were born into wealth based on land stolen from other people because their ancestors were essentially the most brutal warlords around.

Pure nonsense. Plenty of countries have elected heads of state who are no different to anyone else. Also, plenty of these heads of states are purely figureheads just like the British queen. So no idea what this is supposed to mean:

Imagine having a President system in the UK.

What exactly is "a President system"?

Couple of stories knocking about tonight that she won't be at the jubilee celebrations.  Fair few people on social media seem to think London Bridge is already down and will be announced after the jubilee.

Interested to know if people think they could keep that quiet, and also if they would?

Very unlikely. Its not in anyone's interest to keep it quiet

We get 10 days of "mourning" if the queen dies right?

I reckon she'll outlive us all anyway.

Number of mourning days is to be decided as far as I know, we'll probably get a Sunday off, but we sure as hell aint getting a celebration and a mourning if she's already gone.

The Queen is hanging on for the jubilee because she knows we get a day off for that and then when she finally does go, we will get more days off

She's doing it for us, I take it back, my indifference has moved to I guess she is alright after all

I'd think transfer of power (an the inherent instability that comes with it) is too important for the status of a BH to factor into a conversation of when to announce her passing.

To not announce it within hours would have significant ramifications both domestically and internationally, so there would have to be a very serious reason to hold back from telling us loyal subjects.

This assumes that the relevant people don't already know, although I appreciate that at this point I am treading the fine line between believing that the odd secret is kept from us all Vs full on tin foil hat.

I don't think the Queen is anywhere near death

To be fair she is 96 mate. No matter how good your genes are or what kind of life you’ve had, that’s a good innings in anyones books. So any kind of physical downturn at that age will raise concerns

Yes, she is 96 and it is really showing. She did very well through her 80s and early 90s for her age, but now it has caught up with her.

The fact she stayed in the car... hmmmm...... It's crazy, but there is plenty of room underneath that door for a master puppeteer to work in.

Just saying.

Pubs will be forced to close.

You will either have to mourn silently at home in front a huge portrait of our fallen god, or in mass hysteria outside Buckenham palace.

For goodness sake your maj, nobody would care if you turn up at these events in a wheelchair. If anything it'll enhance your reputation.

Well there are those that would care, and there's a slightly increased risk of Charles wheeling you in front of an oncoming truck, but you've lived with that possibility for 50 years so far.

I agree, there is no shame in having to use a wheelchair.

Anyone who woould criticizes the Queen for using a wheelchair is a piece of ****
