This shocker aside, Brazil have done well to get this far though. Far from the best squad, so semi final is well done really. Their luck was bound to end at some point.

Agreed. Could have easily gone out to chile.

Wow - I've seen a moment in football history tonight and to be honest, I feel sad. I grew up seeing the likes of Zico, Socrates, Falcao- with the likes of Pele, Garrincha and Rivelino before I was born. This current side are a disgrace to that memory. It's a areal watershed moment for Brazilian and world football.

Germans were immense, btw. Play such a simple and yet effective game - pass and move.

Yeah as much as I'd like our 5-1 win to be the catalyst for this German generation I think Euro 2000 was more then reason

ending last in that group and losing 3-0 to Portugal was when they changed things

Poor from the Brazilian fans booing Fred everytime he touched the ball or was on camera.

That game was unbelievable.

When we lose, we always need a scapegoat.

Probably up there? :D

how about lightyears beyond that

plus at that stage in world football, Hungary were seen as the best team in the world :D

a bigger shock would have been them losing the 54 World Cup to West Germany

Brazil tonight showed everything that is going on in football. Most of their players play abroad for the money. They are a complete team of individuals as are England.

German football builds from the youth, have few imports and work to budgets.

It's been said many times before but the premiership is probably the worst thing to ever happen to English football. As long as we continue to pay fortunes to import the best in the world the English team will only get worse. I wouldn't be surprised if in 10 years if the English team is mainly made up from Championship players.

Are you actually the real Chris Waddle? Shut up about England ffs.

So how about scapegoating the players that were really responsible, like Luiz and Marcelo?

They should be, but people not necessarily fair here.

I agree, even if the OP is taking the mick a bit.

Brilliant display by our German team. The first half was absolutely astonishing. Ruthless efficiency in front of the goal + poor positioning, pressing and overall defending = 5:0 at half time. Rest of the game was played well and Germany always looked like they have the ability to score even more goals if demanded.

Klose finally got his record. Fully deserved it. This is going to be a very long night here in Germany. :)

What an insane opening 25 minutes. Brazil fell to pieces but think they approached the game like their biggest chance was gone. The shirt and honouring Neymar like a fallen comrade. Erm, you still got a game to play. It's like they were admitting it's over without him. What's worse is the people saying 'it's a nice touch' ... wtf

Never seen a Brazil ripped to pieces like that or any top tier side really. 179 seconds between 3 of the goals, apparently. I assume that's ball in play time?

Brazil/Argies in 3rd place play off would be awesome

Not really. The effect of that result was seismic in England (because of parochial delusions about their place in the footballing world). Even Brazilians know Brazil are crap currently. Sure, no-one expected such a tonking, but a comprehensive defeat was always considered entirely possible.

Indeed, Brazil had struggled to some extent in all previous games (bar Cameroon), winning the WC was possible with luck, etc.. but Germany were deemed the favorites and many were already a fearing Chile and Colombia before that.

Records broken:

Germany's remarkable opening half-hour gave them a 5-0 lead against Brazil and made history in a number of ways -- as did Brazil's defeat. A look at the top facts from Tuesday's 7-1 semifinal:

High-flying Germany

• By scoring Germany's second goal, Miroslav Klose became the most prolific goal scorer in World Cup history. Klose now has 16 World Cup goals in his career, breaking a tie with Brazil's Ronaldo.

• Germany scored five goals in the first 29 minutes, the fastest any team has scored five goals in any game in World Cup history. Yugoslavia scored five in 30 minutes against Zaire in 1974.

• Germany are the first team to score five goals in the first half of any World Cup game since Poland against Haiti in 1974 (Yugoslavia scored six against Zaire in the first half one day earlier), and the first in a knockout-stage game since Austria beat Switzerland in 1954.

• Germany's seven goals broke a record for most scored in a semifinal, previously at six, held by Uruguay and Argentina in 1930, and West Germany in 1954. No one had even scored five in a semi since Brazil beat France 5-2 in 1958.

• The six-goal margin of victory also broke the record of five in World Cup semifinals.

• Germany are now the all-time top scoring team in World Cup history with 223 goals. They passed Brazil at 220 in the first half.

• Germany have taken a 5-0 lead three previous times in the World Cup -- against Saudi Arabia in 2002 (8-0 final), Mexico in 1978 (6-0) and Switzerland in 1966 (5-0).

• Germany reached the World Cup final for the eighth time, more times than any other country.

• Thomas Muller is the 13th player to score 10 career World Cup goals, and the second player to score five goals at consecutive World Cups after Klose in 2002 and 2006.

Miroslav Klose and Germany flew out to a 5-0 lead in the first half against Brazil en route to a 7-1 win.

Grounded Brazil

• Brazil's six-goal defeat equals their worst loss in team history -- 6-0 to Uruguay in the 1920 Copa America.

• Brazil had not allowed five goals in an entire World Cup since 1998. They allowed four in five matches in 2010, two in five matches in 2006, and four in seven matches in 2002.

• Brazil had never before trailed by four goals in any World Cup match. That's 102 previous matches.

• Brazil have allowed five goals in official games just eight times -- six in 1940 or earlier, and twice in 1963. Six goals? Not since 1940. Seven? Not since an 8-4 friendly defeat to Yugoslavia in 1934.

• The previous worst defeats for a host nation at a World Cup were by three goals -- South Africa's 3-0 loss to Uruguay in 2010, Mexico's 4-1 loss to Italy in 1970 and Sweden's 5-2 loss to Brazil in the 1958 final.

• Brazil lost at home in a competitive match for the first time since the 1975 Copa America to Peru -- a period of 63 games.

• The last time Brazil lost a World Cup match at home was the 1950 final, which caused the team to change its kit.

Shame it was not Brazil's worst defeat ever. :(

Could be considered as such though as the previous one was a 0-6 (vs Uruguay in 1920), this one was 1-7, so same goal difference but more goals conceded.
