Messi POTT is a bit weird, even I'll admit that :D

I think Neuer is the player of the tournament. For all their attacking wealth, Neuer was really something else. Phenomenal really, for the entire tournament.

Totally agree, the man was amazing.

Not surprised Argentina lost. Must have been difficult for Dimichelis, Zabaleta, and Aguero to lift themselves for the Final after their team got hammered at Dens this afternoon.

1994 was bloody fantastic. Some of those goals were glorious too. Not seen that kind in this World Cup actually.

Can't get over Messi getting best player though. Was it limited to players still in Brazil? So idiotic. About 10 players have been better than him ffs.

was the Golden Ball trophy on one of those "have to be there to get it" sort of ideas?

Rodriguez and Robben probably weren't there, so not given it. They'd have given it to Muller if he had scored tonight probably

Messi getting best player trophy because he just happened to be standing close by at the time :D

Was weird watching it with Brazilians, they were cheering more vociferously for Germany than they ever were for their own team. Also not sure if l noticed it before the semi or whether it's being done in an ironic way or means of protest but the amount of Brazilians walking around in Germany shirts is insane!

That increased after Brazil was eliminated, especially among Flamengo fans (at least here in Rio) because of that Flamengo-like German kit.

they probably didn't want Argentina to win in their country? :D

JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

Weltmeister! \0/

This is seriously the best football moment of my life, and probably even the best in general

Mario Götze- you're forgiven!

Haha, Oz knows.

On the CL > World Cup argument I wasn't alive to see HSV win the European Cup, but this evening has been incredible. Can't believe the Champions League would come close to this feeling.

Do the sponsors have anything to do with Messi getting the Golden Ball? Agree with everyone else - poor decision.

Do you have to look for a conspiracy in everything ffs? :D Messi won MoTM in 4 of Argentina's 7 games in the tournament, hard to argue against him at least being in the running for it really.

No conspiracy needed. Messi won because the typical sportswriter, regardless of country, is an idiot.

He was voted by a FIFA committee though, not by media, although they are idiot as well.

Why should it be Rodriguez either, as he never delivered when it mattered. He had his chance against a very poor Brazil side but didn't take it.

Was Colombia's best player against them whilst being kicked all over the place, and also scored his penalty. What more do you want from him, exactly?

They must indeed be idiots then. Not that that is news to anybody of course.

Would have given it to Robben or Rodriguez. They were excellent throughout, and did much better than Messi.

I guess it makes sense to give it to a guy who's played in the final. Because a) he's got to the final and b) he's already there. Unless they've had a massively stand out tournament then it would feel odd having a player of the World Cup trophy awarded to a player who isn't even present.

It doesn't make sense however in the fact that at least 3 Germans present in the stadium deserved it more than Messi did.

They gave it to Diego Forlan who only made the semi-finals in 2010 and wasn't even a massive standout at the time either.

Forlan deserved it. 5 goals all outside of the penalty box, and because he's Forlan means he deserves an accolade. Messi has lots of those where he deserves it, but not this one. Personally, I'd give it to either Kroos/Muller/Neuer, or probably to an extent Lahm. Mascherano deserves it more than Messi.

They probably just felt they had to give it to Messi as they feel the need to bestow a World Cup accolade on him whilst they still have the chance. This is the first World Cup he's looked better than half decent in and there's no guarantee he'll get close to another final again. Seeing as he's going to be this generation's Pele and FIFA's poster boy for a long time the more shiny things on his CV the better for them.

Messi is a fairly popular player in Brazil, one of the few non-Brazil based ones that is hugely popular, so the reaction is not a surprise.

Haha someone posting a series of statuses on fb just after the WC final...

"Messi smashes a free kick into Row Z and wins the Golden Ball!"

"Messi wins Prom King!"

"Messi wins X Factor!"

"Messi wins Academy Award!"

"Messi wins Miss USA!"

Maybe it's just because it's late and I'm tired but it had me in stitches :D

Messi looked embarrassed to be taking that best player award. Not his fault obviously and he has been good but who decided that? The worst part is it's given people ammunition to spout things like 'FIFA sucking Messi off again'

I don't think he was embarrassed. More looked like he was disappointed with losing the game and just wanted to get out of the spotlight and not collect some stupid reward

And as for Germany's tournament in general:

They're the deserved champions

In 20 years what people will remember Götze's goal and the 7-1 against Brazil. But the pivotal game of the campaign was the game against Algeria! The Germans didn't play very well there but they showed team spirit and "fighting to the end"-mentality. It's like that game made the team find again the more "classic" German values to add to their game without giving up on continuing playing attacking football. Also the game finally made Löw realize that Germany Works best with Lahm in the defence and Klose up front

Would he have moved Lahm had Mustafi not got injured? Low seems the type to have stubbornly stuck with that nonsense, even though I don't think it was helping the team play at their best.

Well in generel that's true but this time it's a bit different. Löw finally agreed to train set pieces before the tournament! That's the first time in 10 years he did that and it worked out really well. So even Löw is able to learn.
