Downing and Cole have hardly played up front so don't particularly need replacing. At least 3? Really? so you are saying if we only brought in say Huntelaar and Sturridge you would be disappointed and think it not good enough.

If SD and JC go we have Suarez, Sterling, Assaidi, Enrique, Borini. we don't need 8 players going for 3 positions.

I'd like to have seen Shelvey on for Henderson much earlier, he provides much more attacking intent as we sorely lacked any central midfielders getting into the box.

I think Rodgers was slightly cautious with his selection and went into the game looking for a draw.

I think Assaidi is turd and Enrique is just filling a gap, but we do have Suso. So Suarez, Borini, Sterling, Suso and buying more only providing we can offload at least one of Cole/Downing from a wages point of view.

I think we need a main front 3 of Suarez, Sterling and someone else who can chip in with goals. If Rodgers still has faith that Borini can do that, then we need a backup frontman. If Borini is going to be rotated with him and being developed as a future talent then we need someone who can go straight in to the first team and start scoring.

No. I'm saying that if we lose two more players then surely we would need to bring in three to give us a bigger squad than we have right now? Sterling/Suarez shouldn't be playing so many games, and Enrique isn't a forward so take him out of the equasion.

If we signed Huntelaar and Sturridge ofc I'd be happy as it would (hopefully) be an improvement over Cole and Downing, but we would still have a thin squad.

All said and done, I highly doubt we will bring in two new players whilst the board will be happy to lose two. To me it would feel like one step forwards and two steps back as we could end up with an even smaller squad than we have now.

All speculation ofc.

Edit - You don't think JC and SD need replacing with all the games we have to play? I'd have to completely disagree with that.

Downing, Cole and Henderson getting some minutes recently is going to be being seen to give them a chance from the player and fans point of view, getting them in the shop window, and the fact that with Europe games we have a really thin squad and rotation is needed. I don't believe any of them have a future with us.

If you read the whole interview, Rodgers only says he wont be bringing in 5 or 6 in January. Which is understandable. We only really need 1 or 2; which are strikers/forward players.

Need couple of options for the front forwards and a left back I think.

its not about us having a bigger squad though. if Cole and Downing were outstanding forwards we wouldn't be having the trouble we have. until thursday Cole had hardly been a part of the team. really what we are talking about here is the front 3. you can say Enrique isn't a forward/winger but he has been playing there well, so if BR plays him there it doesn't matter what he is historically.

how many players do you think we need for those 3 positions? Suarez, Sterling, Borini, Assaidi, + 2 new, + Enrique and Suso if needed, that's 6 or 8 players, not even counting sticking Henderson or Gerrard out there. I'd say that's plenty enough. we're already out the league cup, may well end up out of Europa, the schedule isn't going to be that crazy.

Not remotely desperate for a striker. We've got the top scorer in the league, and we've got a reasonably able deputy who's just injured at the moment and hasn't played there/gotten a lot of game time since coming here. We need a quality wide player to play on the opposite side of Sterling in the first team, and an able backup.

Two players. Perhaps a third if you wanted to make a desperate case for a short-term backup to Suarez, and perhaps a back-up to Lucas. Our young players we can develop, and they have the potential to go far.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I get the distinct impression that your mind is already made up after reading a lot of your posts.

Can't say I'm impressed so far. However I will gain a lot more respect if they back Rodgers properly. Hopefully in January but at the very least in the summer. However when Rodgers comes out and says its not likely that we will not get a striker in January then how can we expect to compete. For me the holy grail for FSG is us being in the Champions League and financial fair play being properly introduced into the game. We won't be getting into the Champions League without some significant investment into the squad. If we don't invest in January and do end up finishing 11th then even if they then decide to invest who would want to come?

But as I say I'm waiting until next summer to ultimately make up my mind about them, although they have had a poor start.

I'm not just saying it is all their fault where we are by the way either. Rodgers has inherited a squad that finished 8th last season. He has had money to change the squad to fit his style more closely so he has to at least retain 8th spot this season in my opinion or he has underachieved.

What if Suarez gets injured/suspended? Would you be happy to rely on Borini/Yesil? I think we are desperate for additional quality up front, although I agree it is also needed on the wings too and someone who can dictate the pace of the game better in the middle, unless Allen can step up when Lucas is back.

We do need a striker, no doubt in my mind. From what we've seen so far we have no reason to depend on Borini when he comes back from injury. Suarez is doing well now but he it almost entirely our source of goals, we need someone else because if he gets a medium to long term injury, we're ****ed.

Jonjo looks like he might be useful as a false 9, but that isn't gonna cut it against the top 5.

Borini has offered next to nothing so far. I know it's early for him, but we can't depend on him.

Sterling's got massive potential but he couldn't finish a sandwich at the minute.

Assaidi.

I also think we should be using the good old 4-2-3-1 when Lucas comes back, and if we do get a striker. Advantages being Gerrard being played in his preferred position behind the striker, Allen would get a bit more space to dictate the game while Lucas does his thing. Suarez and Sterling tearing up the wide positions. Johnson and Enrique would have plenty of room to bomb on aswell. Plus all of our starlets would have positions to come into - Suso, Jonjo, Wisdom, Coady all having their best positions available. Someone tell me it doesn't make sense.

Gerrard off the striker is a big no for me. will be very interesting once Lucas is back as really you only want one of Allen and Gerrard and then Jonjo or Suso ahead of them (unless we bring someone in but I'd be surprised at that). For me it should be Lucas, a deep lying playmaker and then someone playing off Suarez/Striker getting in the box, but that leaves us with one position for Allen/Gerrard/Sahin/Henderson.

It would be easier to tell what we needed if we had a settled formation, but with wingers playing as fullbacks and fullbacks playing as wingers, I don't who is supposed to be where!

I'm guessing when we were in for Gylfi it was to play where Gerrard currently is, and the idea was to move Gerrard back to where Allen is. I don't think Gerrard has shown enough this season to be good enough any more in that advanced position, whether he is better than Allen in the Alonso role at the moment, I honestly don't know but I really don't think we're anywhere in a position to drop Gerrard at the moment. He's still too important as a leader on and off the pitch, especially during this transition period.

Shelvey showing good potential is really good, as he is looking more like a successor to Gerrard. But that doesn't help us this season.

Still think Walcott would be our best bet. And a proper backup to Lucas. Then shipping out Downing, Cole, Henderson and Carroll.

It sounds ok but am not sure Gerrard behind the striker will work seems Br is reluctant to play this and you mentioned moving Suarez wide. We are not scoring much but surely it makes sense add support around Suarez then to move your best asset? If had people fom those wide forward positions chipping in with 10 to 15 goals each.

I'm talking about adding a proper striker to the squad - for arguments sake we'll say Torres (). I'm just thinking Suarez coming in from the right or left, bamboozling defenders, with Sterling on the other side skinning everyone for pace. Torres in the middle hoovering up the chances created from this, not to mention Gerrard's contributions. I think it should be Gerrard there too. As long as he's got a solid DM pair behind him he can still run the show. IMO.

Ok then fair enough just I think we should keeping Suarez where he is now and has been most effective.

If it were me I'd be looking to buy a striker in Jan, play Suarez slightly off them and put Gerrard on the right. I know he hasn't got the pace he used to but would be good to have him getting into the box for a change.

any role that involves Gerrard getting into the box just isn't right for him anymore.

How do you work that one out? Got three goals this season I think already playing from a deeper role. If you push him further forward more goals will come in my opinion.

I think you'd be better off getting a specialist for that kind of role. A smart move would be see if Swansea can be coaxed into letting go of Michu.

we defo need a forward. maybe not a 'striker', but preferably someone who can play both wide and upfront. so if suarez gets injured he can fill in. or him and suarez can switch around during games.

but it's imperative we sign someone who scores goals. i wouldn't even want the best left winger on the planet (whoever that is) if he couldn't come in and score ten goals between Jan and may. we absolutely need goals asap. imperative we start turning these draws into wins.

and yeah 3 or 4 to look decent? Lucas should shore up midfield, Downing should be out and Wisdom back in, add in 1 or 2 attacking players and we'll be loads better.

yeah but should we really be relying on the youngsters to get us back to where we want to be? for as well as theyve done theyre not gonna get us into the top 4. wisdom is great and i'd put him ahead of kelly tbh because he doesnt get caught out of position and doesnt ball watch like kelly does but would he be starting in atop 4/5 side in the league? suso has looked decent on the ball but has no end product, jonjo again has the potential but isnt the finished article and sterling looked absolutely shattered yesterday near the end and made bad decisions and got caught on the ball. sure he can run all day but mentally he'll be done by march if he continues to play every game and could easily hinder him more than improve him in the long run.

then we've got downing, cole, enrique and borini who are all arguably not good enough for a top 4 side either. allen the jury's still out on for me and whos to say lucas will get to where he was before he did his cruciate? even if he does, it wont be straight away.

i think 3-4 established players isnt too far fetched if we really do want to be relevant any time soon.

obv we'll look a lot better with even 1-2 signings but we need more than that i reckon.

I think Wisdom is pretty good but I feel he's being overrated here, was absoloutely taken apart by Everton and Chelsea I think it was. Obviously those are tougher games but off the top of my head I don't remember Kelly having games like that.

Sterling isn't ready yet. Decision making is nowhere near good enough or his composure. Not having a go at the lad, he's 17 he's got more than enough time to improve those aspects of his game. The sad thing is we shouldn't be putting the pressure on him to be ready now.

Don't think Kelly will ever be good enough to be honest. Good athlete getting up and down the right flank but gets caught balk watching all the time. Also never expects the ball to come to him, he looks shocked when someone passes him the ball.

Id play Shelvey most weeks, not far off being a good player I don't think.

Suso has a touch of class about him but again not quite ready yet. More excited about him than Sterling though personally.

On Sterling I have to disagree. Still think his decision making is one of the strongest parts of his game. Had a tough time yesterday against an on form full back but the highlight of the match from our point of view yesterday for me was his interception covering at full back and then moving the ball intelligently through the midfield with three 1-2s with three different players, relieving the pressure down the right hand side and moving the ball out of traffic. He's not even close to being the dumbest player in our side.

Sterling is playing on merit, not through lack of alternative options. He's developing as well as contributing towards meaningful goal scoring opportunities. Whilst he has the energy there's no need to not continue to give him first team football. Bringing him on as some kind of speedy impact sub is going to slow his development a lot.

Kelly has looked good enough when fit and after a run of games to keep Johnson out of the position under 3 different managers. Fitness/injury proneness is my only concern with him, other than that I think he's a top lad and definitely good enough to be in our starting 11.

As Ben said, I'm sure we will bring in a forward and either that forward or Borini (whichever Rodgers wants to give preference too) has to be a genuine goal threat and start contributing ASAP.

he wasnt keeping Johnson out of position because he was better than him, but because Johnson was the better LB of the two.

This season yes, although it's still a credit to Kelly that him being RB and Johnson being LB is our best fullback combination.

When Kelly had that run of games before he got injured, last season or the season before, he got the opportunity because Johnson was injured but kept his position after Johnson was fit again because he was on fire and was close to an England call-up too I seem to recall.

No argument there as that is the definite case in my eyes.

Except when it comes to his decisions on family planning, of course.

All 17yo's are idiots when it comes to everyday life :)

I think with teens it's difficult, good enough to play but playing week in, week out is rough on a still growing body and he's not like a Rooney, a strongly built lad. Also, on the mental side how does he deal with a dip in form and so on. I'd be surprised if he plays a full Xmas program
