We cannot get through the high press

What high press? Senegal are just sitting their own half, barely moving for most of it. They’re not pressing us particularly. Our players just have no attacking movement themselves

We just need to be a bit more patient with the ball.

That and the midfield have got to show better, stones and maguire have no options and either passing to each other, playing it long, or trying to thread it through the eye of a needle.

Credit to Senegal though for shutting us right down

Overcoached, static, rigid nonsense

It's the opposite, it's undercoached, like about 95% of international sides that don't play like top club sides even though their players are all that level

Looks like a textbook definition of an "alibi player" as my dad likes to say.

Hides from the ball whenever possible, when he gets it just passes it to the next player.

People are going to blame CBs for passing it around, but it's mostly on Rice for not knowing what to do.

Mostly on the players ahead for offering no off the ball movement. Dribblers need to come deeper and make Senegal's defensive decision making difficult, as well as our playing out the back options better

Although if they do come back they need to not give the ball away there ...

Senegal pressed for the first few minutes. Then they just realised they could sit 2-3 players in the line between defence and midfield. Rice & Henderson don't seem to realise they too are allowed to move either side of this line.

Don’t think we could be any more patient tbh. It’s pass it pointlessly side to side across defence 1,000 times football atm.

I think we need to be way less patient and actually take some risks.

Yeah, not much press here. Their front two are sitting in the passing lanes from CBs to Rice, and he's "hiding" behind them. He did the same thing against us. It's absolutely bizarre.

By overcoached I mean the coach has instilled a tactic into them which clearly allows for no individual dynamism or fluidity. They have fixed roles that don’t work in practice and they’re not able to break out of it due to the rigidity he imposes

I think he's stupidly isolated in that central area, needs Henderson and Bellingham loads closer.

Rice isn't a player who can operate at the base, as the 'pivot', or whatever you want to call the role. Wasn't great there vs. Wales and he's not playing well there now. It's one of the big reasons why England's buildup has been so bad. Central defenders having to ignore him.

Unfortunately I don't think England have an alternative

Don’t agree. When we’ve tried to take risks and play through the lines it’s played right into their hands.

The midfield or full backs have to come deeper/closer and offer more passing options as they’re man marking us in the middle third.
