Update 7 – canvey!!

Years: 0, Months: 7, Days: 208

It’s January and the most important weekend on any English football fan’s calendar is the FA Cup 3rd Round weekend. However, first it’s over to Italy for an entirely different cup.

The Italian Cup Quarter Final took place this month, and perhaps the most interesting tie was that of Juventus against Will de Mote’s A.C. Milan. Holders Roma would also travel to Atleti Azzurri d’Italia to face bermybhoy’s Atalanta. But the most convincing win of the round came for Napoli, as Lord Weeman’s team defeated Mikey Twigge’s Palermo 3-0 in the battle of the original co-runner and his replacement. Juventus did take extra time to edge past A.C. Milan 2-1 while Clark Aitken’s side won their match, a 2-1 Roma victory. These three teams will enter into the two-legged semifinal, where they will be joined by Ben Cee’s Inter.

But there were even more cup games in Spain, where the two-legged Fifth Round and the two-legged Quarter Final of the Spanish Cup were played. Saul Goode’s Osasuna had the most convincing victory in the Fifth Round, a 7-1 aggregate tally over Neilio’s Almería, but their win was less convincing in the Quarter Final, where they squeaked past Getafe 1-0 on aggregate. Joe Seddon’s team had perhaps endured the closest Fifth Round match as they ousted Cristobal Blanco’s Recreativo 5-4 on aggregate. Despite this, Blanco is Very Secure in his position, and the Peruvian won one, drew two and lost one league game this month. Villarreal knocked out Atlético Madrid while Real Madrid beat Jack Browne’s Sevilla in the Quarter Final, with these three teams joining Valladolid in the final four.

It is little surprise who is top of the English Premier League, even though Maurice Jobson’s Manchester United just lost 0-2 to Middlesbrough at the Riverside. That was one of two blemishes this month, the other being a 1-1 FA Cup 3rd Round draw with Milton Keynes Dons, an error soon righted with a 3-0 replay victory. They welcomed Hull and Newcastle to Old Trafford and then shunned them both with 3-0 victories, but it was a trip to Anfield that was perhaps the most damaging.

Having already lost one of his lives in this competition, Jeremy English’s hopes were on tenterhooks. And with results such as a 0-2 home defeat to your close rivals, courtesy of a Carlos Tevez brace, you’re not going to survive long. Survive long was not what English did, and just 204 days into his tenure he got the sack at Liverpool. The Reds, taken over by none other than Rafa Benítez, went on to win their final game of the month, 2-1 over Whoopy Dee’s West Ham. As for the other two Big Four managers, who are both still in their jobs, Tom Smith’s Arsenal are in second despite losing to Manchester City this month, and Andre da Conceiçao’s Chelsea lie fourth, winning their first three games of the month and drawing their next four in all competitions.

Of course January brings with it transfers, with all the clubs eager to bring in reinforcements or to make some money. It will come as no surprise who bought a large number of expensive players this month, as Liam Ferguson’s Manchester City single-handedly propelled Everton into riches. Mikel Arteta and Joleon Lescott made the move from Goodison to Eastlands, the former in the month’s highest valued transfer, of £25.5M and the latter for £18.75M. Tim Cahill joined the Sky Blues for £13.75M and Phil Jagielka for £8.5M. They also shelled out £23M for Roque Santa Cruz from Robert Boyle’s Blackburn. With such a loss of personell, Bryan McGuinness had to bring in replacements, and did so with three transfers from European clubs, one from United Arab Emirate side Al-Ain and one from Portsmouth.

Despite this culling of the squad for inconceivable riches, the Merseyside club did quite well in their matches this month, losing only once, although that was a home tie against Martin Bojangles’s Hull. West Ham and Bristol City were despatched in the FA Cup, while Ricky Nakano’s Middlesbrough, Tottenham and Bolton failed to get any points out of meetings with Everton.

English teams weren’t the only ones bringing in players this month, although they were certainly brokering some of the larger deals. A.C. Milan manager Will de Mote agreed two co-ownership deals, from Napoli and from Palermo, totalling £36.75M. His rival Ben Cee, at Inter, spent £4M less on two deals, and one was a proper ownership deal, the £16.5M transfer of Gökhan Inler from Tyler Burrows’s Udinese. In Spain, the two giants bought big, with Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid giving CSKA Moscow £15M for Yury Zhirkov and Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona giving Boca £14.25M for Rodrigo Palacio. Atlético Madrid spent £8M on Cicinho from Clark Aitken’s Roma.

They, by the way, still lead Serie A with a comfortable 10 point cushion over Juventus. They won three league games this month without conceding a goal, including a 3-0 victory over James Ridley’s Siena, yet Ben Taylor’s Fiorentina handed them a 0-3 thrashing when they travelled to Artemio Franchi. At the bottom of the table, Mathias Brunckhorst’s Chievo are tied with Neppo Monster’s Cagliari on 13 points, and both are five points behind Siena, with Catania safe just one point further ahead. Lord Weeman’s Napoli had a good month. As well as the cup victory already mentioned, the Englishman’s team dropped points only once when battling his fellow co-runner James Ridley away. He also made a £11.75M profit, all while signing Fábio Aurélio from Jeremy English’s team, twenty days before English’s departure.

Over in Spain there is a close battle for first place, with no surprise as to who is involved. Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid are currently edging ahead by one point, despite two losses this month. They faced Sevilla and Deportivo three times each this month, beating Neji Hyuuga’s Deportivo in the Spanish Cup Fifth Round but losing to them in the league and conquering Sevilla in both competitions. The other defeat came at the hands of Lars Tommersen’s Villarreal, at the Bernabéu no less. Málaga find themselves bottom thanks to Sirus Lannock’s leadership, yet the Englishman finds his job Stable. They didn’t score this month although they picked up a point with a surprising draw against Barcelona. Maz Armley finds himself Insecure with a poor showing this month, although they faced Tom Hamilton’s Mallorca three times and won in the league while progressing in the cup’s Fifth Round.

Next comes the news you’ve all been waiting for, with the English FA Cup progressing through two rounds this month. Five of our managers saw their teams sent home in the Third Round, them being Shazad Ali, Newcastle, Tim Aubel, Fulham, Ricky Nakano, Middlesbrough, all at home, and Whoopy Dee, West Ham and Scott Tysoe, Sunderland, both away. There were plenty of goals in the Third Round although no side scored more than four, with Bristol City joining Everton and Manchester City in achieving that total. Hull needed a replay against Brighton but squeezed through nonetheless while Brettney Joven’s Wigan, bottom of the Premier League, beat Oldham at the first time of asking.

Three Premier League teams went out in the Fourth Round, including the two just mentioned. Perhaps for Wigan it was most shameful as they fell 0-2 away to Ipswich. The other team was Jeremy English’s Liverpool, as Arnold J. Rimmer and Bolton saw the Reds’ demise at the Reebok. Portsmouth, Blackburn and Man City all scored four goals, against Nottingham Forest, Grimsby and Derby respectively. Watford took Chelsea to a replay after a 2-2 draw at Vicarage Road.

In the next round, the most interesting fixture will be Bryan McGuinness’s Everton facing Tom Smith’s Arsenal, while Fréderico Canvey’s Stoke, along with Chelsea if they make it, are confident of progressing further with Championship opposition at home. Zach Machios’s Portsmouth and Bolton will face Championship sides away. That’s all to come next month, along with league fixtures, the first part of the Spanish Cup semifinal, the first part of the Champions League First Knockout Round and all of the UEFA Cup one. As well as that, there is the potential for a second, third, fourth or even more firings, with 15 managers on the edge.

Manager of the Update

It wasn’t easy this month, but the Manager of the Update will go to;

Bryan McGuinness, Everton

for the successful spinning of a £47M profit. They did drop points against Hull, but were not alone in doing so. Lord Weeman at Napoli was in contention, what with a profit, dropping only two points, Cup progression and bringing in Fábio Aurélio, but their profit was four times less that of the English side. Even table-toppers suffered this month, with Maurice Jobson losing to Middlesbrough, Clark Aitken to Fiorentina and Lucas Volman to two teams. McGuinness’s shrewd financial transactions (offering all his players to the rich clubs) earn him this month’s prize.

Update 7 – weeman27bob

Years: 0, Month: 7, Days: 208

Fortunately for our managers, we have had no sackings this month. That isn’t to say though that none of our managers’ positions are under threat. Chief among them are bermybhoy’s Atalanta who have not won a game since November, and managed a measly point from their four games this month. Even with their shocking form, bermbhoy’s team still sit 16th in Serie A and therefore above the relegation zone.

The same cannot be said of Neppo Monster’s Cagliari. Despite an extremely exciting 2-1 victory over high flying AC Milan, managed by Will de Mote, Cagliari sit 19th in the league, sandwiched between James Ridley’s Siena and Mathias Brunckhorst’s Chievo. All three of these managers have Insecure Job Statuses.

January is infamous for its transfer dealings, and this year is no exception. In England, the top two of Tom Smith’s Arsenal and Andre da Conceiçao’s Chelsea have spent a mind-boggling £65 million on just three players.

Arsenal’s massive outlay didn’t stop them losing 1-3 to West Ham. Whoopy Dee has not had the easiest of times at Upton Park, but a string of impressive results, including a surprising victory at home to Man City .

This does mean that some other teams have slipped towards the bottom of the table . Fréderico Canvey’s Stoke slip down to 18th, despite an inspired 2-1 triumph against Jeremy English’s Liverpool. Poor months from Newcastle and Aston Villa won’t please Shazad Ali and Mark Cator as they slip closer towards the sack.

There were a fair few shock results in the Third and Fourth rounds of the FA Cup. Scott Tysoe’s Sunderland and Fréderico Canvey’s Stoke both went out to Championship opposition in the Third round, whilst Arnold J. Rimmer’s Bolton succumbed to League One Carlisle in a five goal thriller.

Brunton Park, where Carlisle ply their trade, is a long way from the Santiago Bernabéu, which is where the current leaders of La Liga are. Lucas Volman had to endure a shock 0-3 defeat to Joe Seddon’s Getafe. However the team performed better in the Spanish Cup, winning both of their ties, including a 10-0 aggregate win over Cristobal Blanco’s Recreativo.

Blanco’s team sit 14th in La Liga, despite losing all but one of their games this month. Their only victory came in a 1-0 victory over the last placed team, Saul Goode’s Osasuna. Goode can draw hope from his side’s shock win over Joe Gleeson’s Espanyol who sit a lofty fourth.

Between them and Real Madrid are Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona and Jack Browne’s Sevilla. Browne’s men trail Madridstas’s by eight points with their 1-3 loss against David Machine’s 12th placed Athletic not helping their cause. Browne also find’s himself out of the Spanish Cup after going down to Andy Morton’s Sporting.

In Italy, Theo Stigarakis continues to punch above their weight. Their fans won’t be too pleased though as there were only two goals in their four games this month. One of these goals was scored by Super Lampard’s Lecce. Lampard’s team sit 13th, five places above what’s expected of them. They’ve have some tough games recently though, including a 0-3 loss to league leaders Inter. Ben Cee’s team haven’t lost since October and have a five point cushion over second placed AC Milan. Lazio are third after an unbeaten month which included a 5-0 thumping of dafuge’s Torino.

Torino are rapidly working their way up the league however, after an impressive month in which they won three games by a two goal margin. Chief among those was the defeat of Lord Weeman’s Napoli away from home. Clark Aitken’s Roma sit a dismal eighth, winning only one of their games this month. Within touching distance are Cardio Vascular’s Genoa who had an impressive month losing only one game. Their solitary loss came against Mikael Schøler Bologna, where they went down by two goals. Lisa Jeffries’s Juventus have also done well. As well as an unbeaten month, they scraped a victory on penalties over Inter in the Italian Cup. They join AC Milan, Roma and Ben Taylor’s Fiorentina in the semi finals.

Looking back at the top of the Premier League, we see Zach Machios’s Portsmouth drop out of the Champions League places. This is mainly due to a superb month from Maruice Jobson’s Man United, who won every single game this month, including a game away at Portsmouth themselves.

Robert Boyle’s Blackburn were one of the teams beaten in Man United’s winning streak. However, apart from the defeat, they had a rather splendid month indeed. They were unbeaten in the league, seeing their position rise to seventh. They thumped Brighton and Burnley in the FA Cup, but also beat Leo Dodge’s Tottenham in the semi-finals of the League Cup 5-0 on aggregate. This sees them through to the final, where they will play Chelsea.

Liam Ferguson’s Man City have had a changeable month to say the least. They won both of their FA Cup ties, but not only suffered an embarrassing defeat to West Ham, but they also lost 0-1 in a shock game to Middlesbrough.

Finally, turning to the bottom of La Liga, we see a very tight situation. Only one victory separates the relegation zone and 14th place. Wobill Luman in particular finds his team sliding towards the bottom of the table, as Real Betis have not recorded a win since November and so now sit just outside the relegation zone in 17th. Also doing poorly are Jellybean Man’s Numancia who have scored two goals or more in a league game only twice this season. Their goal scoring impotence sees them sitting 19th in the table.

Manager of the Update

This month we return the award to one of our managers…

Whoopy Dee, West Ham.

There are a few genuine contenders for the award this month. Robert Boyle’s Blackburn had a simply fantastic month, as did Maurice Jobson’s Man United and both came agonizingly close to the award. Theo Stigarakis continues to do well in Italy but is not exceptional. However, Dee has really struggled in the league this season up until this point, but has managed to turn his fortunes around with some astonishing victories.

Stable in all three. Not so sure about the £25m spent on Lucho Gonzalez will be worthwhile in Ridleys update. The other transfer dealings in Weeemans update sound a little more promising. Possibly. Could I ask who those were? I hope they prove to be worth it.

I can't see it doing much harm.

Andrés Guardado and Jérémy Toulalan.

But I'm not telling anyone else who they signed.

I like Ridleys updates the best :D

He has given me a manager of the month and told me the news that I am in the Semi-Final of the Spanish Cup, albeit against Barcelona. Plus, I am Very Secure in his game.

Two stables from weeman and canvey show that things are looking shiny for Wobill Luman.

Damn, I only have two versions of McGuinness anyway and their Everton sides are being torn apart.

Jagielka is a big loss in Ridleys' update, but getting Vincent Kompany in return for him is good.

Being named Manager of the Month in Canvey's update is all well and good, but I think I'd rather still have Jagielka there. And Arteta. And Cahill. And Lescott. Balls. :(
