Coleman
I read an excellent article on mentoring while researching to build my youth system on FM Scout http://www.fmscout.com/a-youth-development-on-football-manager-tutoring-guide.html. The article stressed using mentors to build mental a young player's "personality." The author stresses several hidden attributes in a mentor, and the visible attribute determination. I think other mental attributes are also important, although I am not sure they can be learned through tutoring. My list includes: Determination Work rate Decisions Teamwork Question: does anyone know if these other mental attributes can be trained through tutoring? If so, I propose a list of excellent mentors. These are players who will be great with the youth team, yet still able to contribute to the first team. Name some players you've brought (or would like to bring) to your club specifically to bring up the young 'uns! Falahk
Question: does anyone know if these other mental attributes can be trained through tutoring? no they are not, only determination, hidden personality attributes and ppm's (the last one only if you pick the first option when assigning the mentor) are affected by tutoring

Sleepydude
I thought it was the second option to leatn ppm's? have I been selecting the wrong option then, this is my first fm I have really tried to develop youth As far as I know, this is correct. The second option learns ppms, the first is personality development.
Falahk
As far as I know, this is correct. The second option learns ppms, the first is personality development. on fm12 the secound option (take under wing and mentor of the pitch) only did mental attributes while the first option (help improve his game) did both ppms and mental I would assume its exactly the same thing on fm13 (and my limited experiance with this side of fm13 seams to suggest that to be the case)

Bruce Drundrige
Someone I've got who is a pretty decent tutor is Lauri Dalle Valle, mostly because his Determination is 18, which is great if you're looking to give a young fwd a boost of determination. yonko
The first option is PPMs + personality traits. The second option is just personality.
eple
I'm proposing a new format, to include relevant information. WP is mostly relevant for England, and for value/sale value I generally just pick up however is available for free after their contracts have expired and give them a low wage with massive appearance-bonuses. Also, for tutoring the things you should look at is mentality, media handling and determination. PPMs can be a nice add-on, but if the player has a negative mentality you risk ruining the development of the player being tutored. Anything else (OP mentions work rate and such) does not really matter for the tutoring. The best mentalities are Model Citizen, Model Professional, Perfectionist, Professional, Driven, Ambitious, etc. For media handling: Evasive, unflappable, reserved. Look at this excellent thread for reference to what they mean: Personality/MH-guide Name: Ivica Olic Position: SC (AMC, AML, ML) Mentality: Professional Media Handling Evasive Determination 20 PPM: Moves into channels, Likes to round keeper, Does not dive into tackles. Name: Elvis Abbruscato Position: SC Mentality: Professional Media Handling Evasive, Unflappable Determination 16 PPM: Moves into channels, Knocks ball past opponent, Cuts inside, Likes to switch ball to other flank. Name: Rocco Placentino Position: M/AM L (SC) Mentality: Model Professional Media Handling Media friendly Determination 20 PPM: - Name: Carlos Gurpegi Position: DMC-D/M C (AMC, DR, WBr, MR) Mentality: Determined Media Handling Outspoken Determination 18 PPM: Play short simple passes, Marks opponents tightly Additional comment: He is outspoken, which means negative value in controversy and sportsmanship, but his other traits far outweigh this. Can also be used to improve outspoken youngsters that refuse tutoring from more level headed players. Name: Carmine Coppola Position: DM/M C (MR) Mentality: Perfectionist Media Handling Reserved Determination 20 PPM: Shoots with power, Marks opponents tightly Name: Timmy Simons Position: DM/M C (DC,DR,WBr) Mentality: Model Professional Media Handling Evasive, Unflappable Determination 18 PPM: - Name: Walter Montillo Position: M/AM C (M/AM R/L, SC) Mentality: Model Professional Media Handling Reserved Determination 18 PPM: Tries Killer Balls, Shoots from distance, Cuts inside. Sunndaihann
Have to say on the 13.3 patch Robin Van Persie turns out to be an immense mentor. So much so that i have allowed him to overstay his welcome by an extra year on his bumper contract just to bring my youngsters along, The improvements are almost instant !
