Iacovone... how 'bout a few casual votes thrown each others way completely randomly?... Nothing to do with the fact that Benin and Togo are neighbouring countries... nothing at all...

Does this smiley answer your question - ;)

Writer's Notes: Okay, I've decided on a schedule - for these updates we'll be going for one every two days (one day between each). Then updates themselves will stop while I gather votes and then it will be one update per day during the tournaments.

2008: October and November

While there wasn’t any action for any of our teams in November, October had already seen the conclusion of the Second Round of the World Cup Qualifying.

The first matchday, Friday 10th October, saw three very big wins but very many goals all round. As expected, Tyler Burrows’s Egypt thrashed Whoopy Dee’e’s Djibouti 6-0, a scoreline that was matched by Mentho Latum’s Tunisia against the Seychelles. Didier Dardon’s Morocco also did well, beating Lawrence Lazewski’s Mauritania 5-0. Angola beat Niger 4-2, Guinea, Senegal and the Ivory Coast all won 3-0, over Kenya, the Gambia and Madagascar respectively, while South Africa beat The Green Beret’s Equatorial Guinea 3-1 in Malabo, and Thelonius Davis’s Tanzania mirrored that scoreline at home to Cape Verde.

Saturday 11th October saw Liam Ferguson’s Cameroon thrash Alex Almond’s Mauritius 5-0, while Malawi and DR Congo shared the points in a disappointing 0-0 draw. Jeremy English’s Sudan kept up their winning streak by beating David Dodgson’s Republic of the Congo 1-0. Chad, meanwhile, under the management of Hryhorii Zahorchak, continued their losing streak with another depressing defeat on the Sunday, this time 0-3 away to Mikael Schøler’s Mali. Ghana beat Lesotho 2-1 and Tomaldinho’s Liberia shared the points with Robert Boyle’s Algeria after a 2-2 draw.

Cameroon, Adam Wilkinson’s Guinea, Sir Ronald Vaughan’s Benin, Des Tiny’s Nigeria, Alfredo Dick’s Ghana, Edward Still’s Senegal, Albert Holstein’s Ivory Coast, Morocco, Magnus Vestergaard’s Burkina Faso, Mali, Christina Modoglou’s Zambia and Craig Hopper’s DR Congo all made it through to the next round as group winners. They are joined by Karl Unpingco’s Cape Verde, Alfred Jarry’s Kenya, Jose Rodriguez’s Uganda, Ricky Gill’s Libya, Jack Browne’s Rwanda, Tunisia, Sudan and Egypt who were the eight best runners-up. The Third and final round has five groups of four teams. The top team from each group qualifies for the World Cup.

Group 1: Guinea, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda

Group 2: Cameroon, Cape Verde, Morocco, Uganda

Group 3: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Tunisia

Group 4: Ivory Coast, Libya, Sudan, Zambia

Group 5: DR Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Senegal

The most improved African nation in the latest set of World Rankings* was Sir Ronald Vaughan’s Benin who moved up three places to 71st. They beat Uganda 2-1 away in October and qualified for the next round as Group 3 winners. Tom Smith’s Botswana and Magnus Vestergaard’s Burkina Faso both moved up two places. Adam Wilkinson’s Guinea, Charlie Henry’s Zimbabwe and Alfred Jarry’s Kenya all fell four places.

* - These aren’t really indicative of much as they are the November World Rankings, a month in only two African nations played: Ivory Coast drew 2-2 in Israel and Tunisia lost 1-3 in France.

Swaziland had a game? And we only lost 1-0? To who?

I can't remember who it was against (perhaps Togo off the top of my head), but the reason they didn't play last time was because they are part of a three-team group, rather than four.

2009: February and March

The December and January period passed by without any African nations playing fixtures so it is to February and March that we speed. All of those who qualified for the Third Round of World Cup qualifying played a game, and there were a couple of friendly results too.

Nice and simply, there was just one matchday for the World Cup Qualifying Third Round, Saturday 28th March. Des Tiny’s Nigeria and Adam Wilkinson’s Guinea drew 1-1 while Mikael Schøler’s Mali won 4-2 in Rwanda. Liam Ferguson’s Cameroon hosted Morocco and dismissed Didier Dardon’s team 2-0 while Karl Unpingco’s Cape Verde, who have already come to light as an overachieving team (either that or I seriously underestimated them) beat Uganda 2-1.

Group 3 saw Benin beating Magnus Vestergaard’s Burkina Faso while Ghana and Tunisia both got three goals in their encounter. Jeremy English’s Sudan stopped winning when they travelled to Abidjan to play the Ivory Coast: the Ivorians won 2-0. The female touch inspired Christina Modoglou’s Zambia to win 3-2 in Libya, and while DR Congo and Kenya drew 0-0, Edward Still’s Senegal humbled visitors Egypt 3-0.

The champions of these five groups will find themselves in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, alongside the hosts, Matt Lepino’s South Africa. The top three placed teams in each group will qualify for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations. Tyler Burrows’s Egypt need not worry about this as they are in as the defending champions, so their primary target is the World Cup. Juan King’s Angola, despite not making it this far, will also be featuring in the Africa Cup of Nations as the host nation.

Prior to those World Cup Qualifying matches, there were a few of our nations who competed in friendly matches. The Green Beret’s Equatorial Guinea lost a close match in Cairo, with Egypt beating them 2-1, while Mentho Latum’s Tunisia drew 3-3 at home with Mali. Albert Holstein’s Ivory Coast played a friendly in Turkey, a match they lost 1-3.

Thelonius Davis ’s Tanzania made the greatest climb this month, ascending seven places to 93rd. Jeremy English’s Sudan climbed five places to 69th despite losing their game, while Zambia, Jack Browne’s Rwanda, Craig Hopper’s DR Congo and Sir Ronald Vaughan’s Benin moved up four places. Quandiose Yancy’s Eritrea dropped like a lead balloon, now six places lower in 142nd. Yancy’s team withdrew from World Cup Qualification before he became manager, leaving the Gambian thoroughly bored in Asmara. He’s not even a cycling fan, which is synonymous to heathenism in Eritrea. Juan King’s Angola fell four places and a handful of other teams fell two places. Liam Ferguson’s Cameroon, by the way, are the current African #1s, in 19th place, closely followed by Des Tiny’s Nigeria.

I'm just trying to work out, since we don't need to qualify for the African Cup of Nations, do we still have competitive football.

Just struggling to understand the format a little.

The ACN is every two years, the World Cup every four. When the two coincide, the qualification is the same. There are five groups of four, the top one in each group qualifies for the World Cup to give five, alongside South Africa, and the top three qualify for the ACN, to give fifteen, who will be joined by Angola.

So nobody will be playing ACN qualifying, as it is in the form of WC qualifying.

So if Pluck's team is one of the top 3 in a group would that mean the 4th placed team qualifies? Hang on that means that anyone drawn in that group is through automatically wouldn't it?

No, it would be the other way around - if Egypt finish fourth somebody else (who finished 3rd) fails to qualify.
