FM23 Performance Benchmarking Thread

Recommended Posts

I wonder if that's because the thread has been so successful this year in figuring out what the best hardware is for FM at the moment.

I can't find that written out clearly in one place anywhere but FWIW I read the benchmarking data as follows:

- if you want to play FM on a desktop the latest Intel and AMD CPUs are both very fast and about as fast as each other. 12th series and recent (using Intel's naming system) on desktop are faster than Apple silicon

- if you want to play FM on a laptop Apple silicon is best by a clear distance, with M2 better than M1 and the various Max and Pro variants perhaps making a small difference over the base model CPUs but not a huge one. PC laptop CPUs are a long way behind at present, particularly when run on battery i.e. not plugged into the wall

I'll hazard a third thought - but I'm much less convinced this is correct than the first two

- because Apple silicon is as good as it is at present, the gap between laptop and desktop peformance for FM is smaller than it has been in the past i.e. the benefits of the full-on desktop rig are smaller than they were before FM was optimised to run on M1 / M2 chips. I think this is probably true but can't say that for certain. For me personally the need to build a desktop rig to replace my 2019 PC has gone and FM is a laptop game for me now, but YMMV on that one

Is all this in line with the consensus view? I think this thread does a very good job at setting out what's going on and that's how it looked to me when I looked at it anyway.

(I should add in case this post annoys anyone - I'm not a hardware fanboy in any direction. Just want to take a data-driven approach to ensuring I have the best computer to do the things I want to do, hence why I'm here)

Way back in March I announced I was building two computers - a 7950X vs, 13900k comparison using direct-die water cooling. Well, I'm half-way there. I have finished the AMD build and report my scores below.

The Intel/nVidia build is mostly done. I've found that I didn't do a good enough job removing all the indium from the dies the first time around. So, I'm taking that apart and putting in a little more elbow grease. I'll report back on that in maybe a couple weeks.

The first set of scores is just with the CPU overclocked (RAM on EXPO timings). The second set of scores are with the CPU overclocked plus tweaked memory timings.

Type: Desktop

Model: Custom

CPU Model: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X

CPU Base Frequency: 4.5GHz

CPU Turbo Frequency: 5.7GHz

RAM: 64GB DDR5

RAM Clockspeed: 6000Mhz

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900XTX

Graphics Level in 3D:  Very High

w/only CPU overclock:

Benchmark 1: 0 min 38 Sec

Benchmark 2: 01 min 07 Sec

Benchmark 3: 4 min 48 Sec

Benchmark 4: 9 min 15 Sec

w/both CPU OC + RAM tuning

Benchmark 1: 0 min 36 Sec

Benchmark 2: 01 min 05 Sec

Benchmark 3: 4 min 32 Sec

Benchmark 4: 8 min 52 Sec

I just thought it was interesting how much improvement you could get, particularly in the last two tests, just by tweaking RAM timings.

Overall, I'm sure my over-the-top cooling helped loads with this. The chip never once thermally throttled in this setup and allowed me use the extra thermal headroom to push things even further.

I'd say you were pretty much spot on with that assesment although we haven't had many new windows based laptop tests done.

I switched to Mac myself and the fact that it doesn't drop in performance when you unplug it from the wall was the game changer that made me switch

What do you think, will the Unity engine announced in FM25 affect the speed of data processing or only the quality of graphics?

No way to know at this point but I imagine a lot of people will need to upgrade.  This thread could be invaluable for that.

guys, I understand that fm 25 doesnt have much news to the spec atm. But I have to buy a new mac this year, and struggle on whether I should choose M2 pro (10-Core CPU 16-Core GPU) with 16Gb ram and M2 Max (12-Core CPU 30-Core GPU) with 32 Gb ram. Worried if I buy a mac now and cannot meet the fm 25 requirement, any suggestions?

I can confidently say that they will both meet the requirement

We are talking £2k + worth of hardware

I know we don't have hard data.  But, my laptop is running out of its lifespan and I'm looking to replace it.  What should I look at in the way of graphics and RAM so that I'm not caught with my pants down when FM25 comes out?

No thats not correct

Do the tests yourself and you will see

OK, thanks! I thought that there was no optomization for multicore built in FM. But it's very nice if they have that.

Looks like a great improvement with the native Apple Silicon version. Thanks for the great work as always @Brother Ben

Decided to re-run this in macOS Sonoma to see if the Game Mode made any difference (only really saw it on Benchmark 3), and also if the screen flickering issue I saw on Ventura disappeared (good news, it did). @Brother Ben, I added more detail on the model too (it was reflected as 2021 on your sheet).

What do you guys think? I'm going to buy a new PC for FM24. In terms of CPU do you guys think I'm better off going with 14th gen intel, which will be a slight improvement on 13th gen, or Ryzen 7000? Particularly the 7800X3D or 7950x, with the plan to then upgrade in 2 years time.

So, basically the best available now (17th October) in the 14700k or 14900k and buy a new motherboard + CPU in say 4 or 5 years or AMD then upgrade just the CPU in 2 years?

Keep in mind this is a PC for basically all types of games, but with a slight bias towards FM of course.

Hello everyone, I’ve been looking to buy laptop for uni and fm but also don’t want to have to worry about being crucified by the required specs for fm25. Most I’m looking to spend is around £1000 range which fits perfectly into a MacBook Air M1/M2. Obviously no one knows for sure about the requirements for 25 but if anyone knows a bit more about specs than I do would one of these  MacBook Airs potentially be able handle the new graphics that will be in fm25

Post it here please:

There's no real way to test them exactly but I will be setting up the FM24 tests to be as close to the FM23 ones.

Its quite a claim though.  I wonder if they have had to make any compromises to make it happen?

God I never even thought of that!

Brilliant

Would it skew the tests at all I wonder, would an imported save take longer than a fresh save made on FM24
