New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Hi there, looking to get back on the FM bandwagon but would really appreciate some help on choosing a new laptop. My price range is 350-470. Primarily will be used for fm with maybe music playin in the background but not a lot else!

So the candidates are...

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/acer-e5-551-15-6-laptop-black-10011211-pdt.html#longDesc

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/lenovo-z50-15-6-laptop-black-10108701-pdt.html#cat-0

Or at a push if necessary!

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/asus-x550ze-15-6-laptop-grey-10071491-pdt.html#cat-0

If anyone has any other recommendations at those prices then please say! I don't run an awful lot of leagues maybe 5 or 6 in 4 or 5 nations with a medium database unless the laptop can handle more of course!

Thanks!

MrHappypill, I can't help you as I dont know much bout desktops.

Jon, I think it should be able to run 40 leagues.

Typhoon, I have a Lenovo Y40, U have the Z50, and I think that could be a good buy. If you want to shell out more, the Lenovo Y50 would be great.

So u reckon that would be the pick of the 3? I'm not overly bothered about graphics as I'll use 2D at a push!

I have two people who are in need of laptops. Myself and my dad.

I'm looking for one that would be good to play FM on that could run a number of leagues successfully for a number of seasons. My budget isn't set at the moment.

My dad is looking for one that would be used for work and his cadet instructing. His budget is £300 to £350.

Any help is appreciated.

Great little article Eugene that explains in an informative way. I feel a little more informed after reading this and previous posts. My problem is that my budget is only £600 (which is a lot for many people) and I want a Laptop solely for playing FM and want the best graphics I can possibly get so I presume I am in the gaming laptop range? I am not bothered if it is big and bulky and won't be carrying it around much at all.

Hey I am looking at getting a Mac Air or Pro... Not sure yet but my budget could stretch to £700ish. (I say this but the cheaper the better of course)

I would like to load a reasonable amount of leagues (10?) with a large database and it still be fairly quick, I know I'm asking for a lot. I never will watch a game in 3d so the whole 3d graphics card doesn't matter as I normally watch 2d or only commentry.

Other uses of the laptop will be general browsing and a lot of online poker, also I have a Nikon camera so a Laptop with a SD memory card slot is a must (I think all Mac books come with this bar one if I'm correct)

Also I'm currently in Australia so buying a Mac out here is around 200 quid cheaper compared to the UK.

Any help would be highly appreciated :)

Cheers

Further on from my last post... Would it be better to get the cheapest Mac Pro or the dearest Mac Air?

Here are the specs which don't mean much to me...

Mac Pro

13 inch : 2.5GHz

Dual core Intel core i5

Turbo boost up to 3.1GHz

4GB 1600MHz Memory

500GB 5400-rpm hard drive

Intel HD Graphics 4000

Battery 7 hours

Aus$ 1349.00

Or

Mac Air

13 inch 256GB

1.4GHz dual-core Intel core i5

Turbo boost up to 2.7GHz

Intel HD graphics card 5000

4GB memory

256GB PCle-based flash storage.

Aus$1399

What is the main difference for 50 dollars? As I have no idea

Or would you go for a cheaper Mac Air or more expensive Mac Pro?

Cheers

I would say the pro, how much extra for a 8gb version?

Thanks for the response, for what reason would you say pro?

Also the 8GB one is 250 aus dollars more so technically £125 but when you go up to the 8GB you also get a retina display and only 128GB PCle based flash storage compared to 500GB 5400 rpm hard drive...which I'm not sure what either is.

First, I would never invest in apple device.

Second, Griffin, sorry I don't know much for laptops that cost 700+ pounds.

Third, Dan, I have a Lenovo Y40. So amazing for FM.

I was looking at the Y series with Lenovo. How long have you had it? Whats the processing speeds like.

I really miss the days when I could have a 90k database and play for months on end and just get balls deep in to a save!

Hi Everyone,

Eugene has recommended this one to another person who has similar requirements as myself last week or so which is basically mainly playing FM and I play in 3d mode. What would be the graphics rating roughly be on the star rating that FM uses on the laptop above? My current laptop is 2.5 stars. Thanks all really want to know if this is worth paying for as money is tighter than a ducks bum at the moment.

Is it too much or too little? Obviously spending less is fine it's just that I don't know how much good laptops go for so I just put a random figure , but if a good laptop for FM is cheaper than 700 then fantastic ! My current laptop i've had for 4 years or so and it has 5* for FM but still runs slow , I can't load too many leagues and it over heats soo much then sounds like it's ready to take off.

If you had to guess how many leagues and players do you think it could handle?

Are there any negatives? Is it a machine that will be good for the next 2 years?

sorry for all these questions!

sorry for all these questions!

The thing is every gamer has a different perception of what good gaming speed is. In my opinion I'd never run more then 10 countries and no more then 100,000 players from the get go. For me that is a good speed and my laptop is nowhere near as good a spec as that one. If you feel you'd be happy with 10 countries and 100,000 in one save then I'd say you'll race through a season with that laptop pretty comfortably.

As for negatives, if I had to pick one, and now this is me being really picky, but the processor doesn't seem as good as the rest of the spec. Now I say that because it has a good graphics card and it's loaded with 12GB memory but that seems to have come at a cost for the processor. It's not a bad processor and honestly for that price (roughly about £780 I'm guessing?) it's good. As for durability, I would've thought you'd be perfectly safe for 2 years.

I thought the processor was the most important piece. I will keep looking but I think I might get that one. Do you have any recommendations on which processor to look for, I5 I7 etc

Any thoughts on this http://www.johnlewis.com/toshiba-satellite-s50-b-15u-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-ram-1tb-15-6-metallic/p1851088

I'm aware the graphics are integrated but I always play in 2D anyway.

This takes me right up to my £500 budget.

It's also available here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-Satellite-S50-B-15U-Graphics-Windows/dp/B00TPXBEI0 for £60 cheaper but i'm a little cautious about the retailer.

Just bought this..Looks like it would run a lot of leagues to me? But I'm not very good at understanding it all..Will this be alright?

I don't think I have a problem with Amazon warehouse or with it being slightly damaged at that price

Its getting to that point where I will be making the purchase either tomorrow or somepoint over the weekend.

Are there any last minute advice, laptops to avoid, good laptops that will run FM smoothly with a large number of players. Any tips would be great.

I tend to panic before making a large purchase of 1k over. So sorry to keep going on.

I am looking for longevity. I dont want to have to buy another in 1years time due to overheating. Any advice on the better processors to look for an graphics card?

Cheers guys appreciate it!

I have a Toshiba laptop (4 years old) which is now beginning to show it's age I am looking to replace it and am in the market for a new one.

My old laptop had a Intel® Core™ i5-2430M Processor and NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M graphics card. Any ideas on what could play FM & games like The Sims 3 well?

Hi, I cant decide between these two:

Hp Dv7 17.3 17 AMD A8 Quad Core 8gb Ati Radeon 8550 4GB (1780 USD)

or

Hp Envy Dv6t-7200 Intel Core i7 3630 16gb Video Geforce GT 630M 1Gb Bluray (1680 USD)

The notebook will be mostly used for design programs like AutoCad, Photoshop and other similar visual utilities as the user is an interior design student.

Guys, remember FM is not a very heavy game, like Battlefield or Far Cry. A decent computer should do the trick, but most people want more than that.

H2D2, I would personally suggest a computer such as the Z50 or Y50 from Lenovo. i7 processor, good ram and storage, and runs quite smoothly.

Got a budget of 600-800 pounds, looking for a laptop that can run at least 10 leagues with a fair amount of detail, i just want the game to be as quick as i can possibly get it in terms of processing speed.

Like most people, i'll be using it mostly for personal use such as video streaming and some gaming, would also be nice if it could run some games that are a bit more complex than FM, not talking about things like battlefield of COD here.

Any recommendations welcome!

I am currently looking for a laptop to replace my faulty Sony Vaio.

I have a budget of £750 maximum.

I have had a look around and found an MSI CX61 2PF-1464UK which has caught my eye ( http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16GD11-1464-MSI-CX61-2PF-1464UK_1703768.html )

I use the laptop every day fro FM and web browsing, watching movies etc.

I am after the best laptop I can for my money and would like one that will run at least English, Spanish, German and Italian leagues with a large database.

If there are any other suggestions for laptops it would help as I am a little bit lost looking for one

I have got these 5 in mind at the minute -

What you picked is good. I have the same computer but from a couple of years ago, with a similar CPU but less RAM. Same casing and keyboard etc. Only complaint is the touch pad is serviceable but not good. Keyboard is quite comfortable to type on. I run about 10 leagues with a large databse and have had games of maybe 5-10 seasons so far and I find the speed acceptable. I have just replaced the disk drive with an SSD and I hope that will make saving and loading faster.

I'm looking to buy a new MacBook Pro Retina and I wasn't sure if upgrading the ram from 8GB to 16GB would be an 'overkill'. I plan on using it as my main computer with FM, a little bit of video editing and the rest just university tasks.

The specs of the MacBook are:

2.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 - Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz

8GB 1866MHz LPDDR3 memory

256GB PCIe-based flash storage

Intel Iris Graphics 6100

So yeah, would 16GB RAM be 'too much' or an overkill for the laptop or should I upgrade the RAM to future proof my laptop?

Thanks!

Would be overkill for FM but not for video editing. It's also a little bit of future proofing given that everything just seems to be more RAM intensive these days, but CPU power has not improved as rapidly as it used to.
