New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Ive decided to buy a new laptop with FM2013 coming out in a few months. My laptop isn't the best at the moment and runs the 3D engine quite poorly so It's likely to be alot worse on FM2013 with the improvements in the graphics.

Anyway, I'm not the best with Laptops so I need help. I have a budget of 500 pound (I can go SLIGHTLY above this if needed) and I want a laptop that will run the match engine on the highest quality smoothly aswell as having a good number of leagues loaded and get through this without having to wait ages every time you press continue. I dont know if what I want is too much to ask for on my budget, so It might have to be a 700 pound laptop on sale for 500 or something like that. Any help would be appreciated guys, Thanks.

The Acer beats it easily. Better processor, graphics, more RAM, cheaper as well.

What's the story with the dedicated graphics card anyway?

The are graphic card with shared memory, that used a part of computer RAM and is cheaper solution.

There are also graphic card with dedicated memory, meaning that the graphic card has internal memory, granting a better performance, but is a more expensive solution.

If you only play Football Manager, you will need lot of RAM, 4gb at least and a good processor.

Football Manager is not the kind of game that demands a very good graphic card and I think a shared memory graphic card is enough.

should point out that fm doesnt use all that much ram and any more than 4gb wont be used at all..

fm is all about the processor... the better the processor the better the game will run... and the one posted above will run fm like a dream..

im tempted to get it myself in fact..

what? dedicated cards in general or a specific one?

Laptops that have a graphics card, they have it dedicated or intergrated. The min specs for FM12 were 1GB RAM why should i have 4GB or more. For the general positioning of the laptop market i am looking to buy the less expensive bargain and if there is any advert anywhere i would be happy you post it.

In an integrated graphics card, if the graphics card stops working, most likely your processor is not working either. So you'd need an entirely new computer, or replace the processor (which might cost the same as buying a new computer).

For a dedicated graphics card, if it stops working, it's far cheaper to replace the graphics card with another one. Plus a dedicated graphics card will free up the processor to do what it should be doing, processing the data in the game.

The 1gb RAM is what Football Manager needs free in the system to run effectively.

4gb RAM is recommended - as the RAM is also used for the Operating System (Windows) and all the background tasks running on the computer, like Steam, Internet, anti-virus software, etc.

The maintenance is a big advantage on dedicated graphic cards.

1gb will be enough to play Football Manager depending of the amount of leagues you select. For example I start a save unemployed and I select about 20 countries with all leagues selected, with a total of 100000 players. When I'am playing with that save, Football Manager is consuming 2gb of memory.

That's why 4gb of memory is a comfortable amount of memory if you want selected lots of leagues.

Might jump on this thread as well, saving creating a new one

Interested in getting a new laptop for FM13, haven't played since FM11 and my laptop is 4 years old now.

Budget can go up to £800-900 if need be, looking for a laptop I can really have some fun with FM13. Like to have loads of leagues (talking about 30 odd) and a large database as I love searching the random leagues. Looking for a decent speed as well as I work a lot so can't do loads of hours on it.

Realise 4-6GB of Ram is enough and that some 3rd gen Intel 5 processors could be more optimal than 1st gen 7's.

Would I need a decent graphics card added as well

Any suggestions, am based in the UK - any help is appreciated

Cheers

Always good guides, the comparisons of processors and Graphics Cards:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

Shows how good a deal that Acer is to be honest, 26th ranked processor and 136th ranked Graphics, very high for £500. Acer's aren't great though in terms of build quality but are improving.

You can compare processors on Ark Intel

Just google the processor number and add it to the compare list

google another processor number and add that to the compare list etc.

Graphics card - as Neil says - check out notebookcheck - insert the graphic model

You'll be looking for middle to high end - don't go for entry level.

RAM - 4gb or 8gb (I got castrated last time for recommending 6gb lord have mercy on my soul)

For FM it's all about processor. If you want 3d Matches then get a nice graphics card.

Honestly you don't need that much ram - so if it's down to downgrading something to make cash available elsewhere- knock down to 4gb RAM - far easier and cheaper to upgrade the RAM.

just as a comparison there fallacy.. ive got a low end i5 processor and standard 4gb ram with a dedicated card (low end) .. i used to play fm 12 on it... and used to comfortably run 20 odd leagues and 100,000 plus players for many many many seasons with no slow down...

you can get a system like that now for £300-£400 ...

you cannot go wrong if you look at i5 minimum, 8gb ram (others will say 4 , but i always recommend 8 as it leaves you with plenty of leaway for multitasking and any future needs.... 6 is almost pointless for various reasons) and a little dedicated graphics card..

honestly.. spending any more than £500-£600 is madness unless you need to specialize in something... like video editing or very high end gaming.

If they have more money to spend then spend it on the processor. Everything else is upgradeable. If it's just for FM then a mid-range graphics card is perfect.

Spend the cash on the processor. 4gb RAM is a minimum (8gb better). And a dedicated graphics card.

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I might piggy-back onto this one. Also looking to buy a new machine, largely for FM but I would like it to be able to run other games fairly well - not talking Crysis/Battlefield type games but more FM, Total War games, etc.

That laptop above looks like a great deal, so much so that I'm actually considering it, but I'm actually looking for a desktop machine really. I don't need anything other than the box, got monitor and so on sorted. My budget is £500 so any recommendations anyone has would be great :)

Thanks.

Would I need to upgrade the Graphics Card for that Acer model to get nice 3d matches?

Like the look of the deal, read the reviews and all seems good. Under £500 seems a steal

As I said - stick the graphics card model into notebook check

The NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M is a relatively fast middle-class graphics card for laptops. Currently, it can be based on three different chips with different specifications and performance values. The GF108 version (a renamed GT 540M) features 96 shaders while the GF106/GF116 version (a renamed GT 550M) features 144 shaders. Furthermore, the newer 28nm Fermi-based GF117 variant will be available as well with significantly reduced power consumption. All models feature a 128 Bit memory interface for DDR3 graphics memory. As part of the Fermi architecture, the cards support DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.0.

I'm also on the look out for a new system and was looking to buy a desktop tbh but that laptop is tempting!

I would be buying it with FM being the main reason and only PC game I play. Itunes and Internet the only other 2 things really.

So the desktop was £682 and here are the specs:

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/quotes/491634/

I would also need a monitor (£83.90) LG 21.5" LED LCD, Resolution - 1920x1080, Contrast Ratio - 5000000:1, Response Time - 5ms.

This brings the total to £765.90

@ Welshace - I know you know what you're talking about so I'll just ask, is this worth it for FM or would I be better of with the laptop? The only thing is you mentioned 6GB RAM is worthless and that's what the laptop has. Also, I know it's hard to upgrade laptops.

I currently have a desktop with the specs of:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q660 (2.4GHZ)

3.2 GB RAM (would be 4 but running 32 bit XP)

Nvidia 9500 GT 1GB

Would I see a big improvement over my current desktop with the laptop? As my desktop is 4 years old and starting to run slowly. I'm not sure what to do now. I was looking to spend £800 but maybe that was going OTT?

Another question about the ACER for 499.99. I've just found out that I probably won't be able to afford it for another three weeks. Do you think it will still be that price in three weeks or not? I have to say I would kick myself if I missed out on it as I probably won't find a better deal ever, but I really dont think I can afford it this time around?? :(

Basically the desktop had:

i5 3570

8GB RAM

AMD Radeon 6670 1GB

500GB WD Caviar Black 32mb (7,200rpm)

450W PSU

I know this is better than the laptop but the price is £260 more in total for that and the monitor. Overkill perhaps?

Any recommendations welcome.

well the processor isn't as high range as the laptops , although in practice.. there isn't too much difference tbh.. and the card isnt THAT much better either... if it's between them both..i would certainly go for the laptop ... but you know.. if you want a desktop, you can do a LOT better for your budget then that

likely to still be there.. if not... can try finding another with similar spec.. don't worry too much, prices and specs change on a weekly basis when it comes to hardware tbh.. just get your money together and buy what you can afford at that particular time

Thanks mate. You sure about the processor? As I know that the i5 3570 is the 3rd gen version of the highly rated i5 2500 which rates just above the laptops processor (2670 QM) on various comparison charts that I've checked.

Yeah I would probably prefer a desktop as I like the bigger screen + you can upgrade them in the future. I'm not ruling laptops out though as that laptop is a great deal and I would go with that tbh if I can't find a desktop as good as it for a similar price.

That is insane for the price, was looking at new laptops today and had already seen that model, but at £600. 500 for that is a steal, only slight downside would be the 6gb RAM rather than 8, but really not going to make a huge difference for FM. From the reviews, the only other 2 "downsides" on this laptop are battery life and the fact it gets a bit hot. Can probably deal with that for the bargain price!

as i said, i use a much lower spec machine and comfortably run 20 leagues on full detail and 150,000+ players in the database..

that one with that processor should run significantly more at a decent pace :)

Do you mean 20 separate leagues themselves or 20 nations?

You said the 3570 (desktop) was slightly weaker than the 2670 QM (laptop). All the benchmarks I've seen have shown that the 3570 is more powerful.

yeah you're right about the processor.. I read the specs wrong, I was thinking first/second gen i5's.

but i think i may be right in saying the i7 has hyperthreading where as the 3570 does not, but i may be thinking of the 3750k :/.

on my little i5 m430 .. i was running 20 seperate leagues and 150,000 player database that quizzed along until 2027 with no bother at all, despite only having 1 star for performance with that amount.
