In this version you will be the manager of players like Ezequiel Lavezzi, Marco Verratti, Javier Pastore and Zlatan Ibrahimović. There will be a lot of money and a lot of expectation, do you have what it takes to handle the giants from Paris? LAST SEASON SEASON 2011/12 Qatar Investment Authority bought Paris Saint-Germain in June 2011 and hired Leonardo as a Director of Football to help the club secure top class players around Europe. The club signed Nicolas Douchez, Kevin Gameiro, Milan Biševac, Jérémy Ménez, Blaise Matuidi, Mohamed Sissoko, Salvatore Sirigu, Javier Pastore and Diego Lugano for significant transfer fees. PSG became the richest club in France and one of the richest clubs in the world. New chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi presented a five-year plan to take Paris Saint-Germain to the top of the tree, in France and abroad. He outlined the new owners' long-term plans for the club: "PSG has an enormous potential - they are the only big football club in a city of 12 million inhabitants! That's unique in Europe. Our aim is to qualify for the Champions League every year as of 2012. We want to invest in the big stars of tomorrow from all over the world, including France." - Nasser Al-Khelaifi, Chairman In December 2011 PSG decided to fire manager Antoine Kombouaré despite some very good results in the league. It didn't took long until they hired Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti, previously at Chelsea. In the January Transfer Window PSG signed Maxwell, Ronan Le Crom, Alex and Thiago Motta. That's almost £90M spent on only transfers. In the last game of the season PSG came from behind to beat Lorient away but the win was not enough for them to win the league. Montpellier won its first Ligue 1 title, finishing the season with 82 points, three more than PSG. CURRENT SEASON SEASON 2012/13 Paris Saint-Germain signalled their intent to become one of Europe's biggest clubs in the summer transfer window, spending nearly £25M acquiring one of Serie A's biggest stars in Ezequiel Lavezzi. The Argentinean put pen to paper on a four-year deal and was presented at the Parc des Princes alongside director of football Leonardo. He will wear the number 11 shirt and will link up with Argentinian compatriot Javier Pastore. "He is a player that we have been following for a long time and we are very happy to welcome him as part of our club. A very good player has joined the club. He will make history at this club, I am convinced of that." - Leonardo, Director of Football Also arriving from Italy are Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimović in a £50M double deal from AC Milan. PSG also signed the highly rated Italian youngster Marco Verratti for around £8M. The 19-year-old, rated as one of Europe's best young playmakers, was handed the number 24 shirt and linked up with fellow Italians Salvatore Sirigu and Thiago Motta. In August PSG confirmed the record signing of Brazilian wonderkid Lucas Moura from São Paulo for a fee of £37.5M. He will join the club in January 2013. Milan Biševac, Ceará, Loris Arnaud and Granddi N'Goyi have all left the club for other teams and Jean-Eudes Maurice, Loïck Landre, Neeskens Kebano and starlet Jean-Christophe Bahebeck are out on loans. Anthony Réveillère was very close to finalise his transfer to PSG but failed his medical, so instead they signed Gregory van der Wiel from Ajax to strengthen the right-back position. HISTORY PSG was established on 12 August 1970 after a merger between Stade Saint-Germain and Paris FC. The club has always represented both Paris and nearby Saint-Germain-en-Laye. And with so many people eager to see a big club wearing the capital's colors, the nascent team grew at a stunning pace early on. Top-tier status was attained within four years and by the end of the 1970s, PSG were ready to embark upon a historic decade. PSG tasted French Cup honours in 1982 and 1983, before capturing their first league crown in 1986 – breakthroughs that opened the doors to Europe and some memorable encounters, particularly with Juventus. The 1990s proved even more fruitful, with PSG entering a golden age after television giants Canal+ bought the club in May 1991. Now enjoying serious investment, the club was able to set their sights steadily higher. PSG were on the move and between 1992 and 1998 they contested two UEFA Cup Winners' Cup finals. Winning in 1996 and reached the UEFA Champions League semifinals once and twice advanced to the same stage of the UEFA Cup. On the domestic scene, results were just as satisfying, with PSG celebrating another League 1 title, three French Cups, two League Cups and just as many Champions Trophy wins. To the considerable chagrin of the club's supporters, PSG has never threatened to hit those same heights again. Three more trophies have been landed but crisis has never lain far away. PSG's form slipped to 9th in 2004–05 and 2005–06. In 2006–07, they did not impress, failing to reach a cup final and finishing 15th, just three places from relegation. Following their sale by Canal+ to Colony Capital, PSG continued to lose momentum in the league eventually finishing 16th, just three points above the relegation zone. PSG nonetheless won the League Cup and reached the French Cup Final, losing Lyon. In 2008–09, PSG regained fitness and struggled for the title the most part of the season, but finished 6th and out of European action. In the 2009–10, PSG claimed the French Cup and the next season ended in disappointments with the French Cup being lost to Lille, while a 4th place finish in the league was not enough to deliver Champions League qualification. A few days after the season had ended, the sale of the club was finalized, with Qatar Investment Authority becoming the new owners. Next season, 2011-12 PSG finished second in the league, despite many new signings. OWNERSHIP Qatar Investment Authority officially became the majority shareholder of Paris Saint-Germain in 2011. Future Head of the Board, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, presented a five-year plan to take PSG to the top of the tree, in France and abroad. Qatar Investment Authority bought a controlling 70% stake in the club from, now minority, shareholder Colony Capital, who retained 29% of the capital club. In 2012 they purchased the remaining 29% stake held by Colony Capital and 1% stake held by Butler Capital Partners and became the sole shareholder of the club. FACILITIES PSG’s stadium is Parc des Princes, located in Paris. It was opened in June 1972 and is a football and rugby stadium with no track around the pitch. On 10 November 1973, PSG held their first match at the Parc des Princes during a match against Red Star Saint-Ouen. The following year, PSG left the Stade Georges Lefèvre and moved in at Parc des Princes permanently. The capacity is 47, 428. The training center of PSG is called Camp des Loges and is located in the commune of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, which is in the western suburbs of Paris. The center's hosts training sessions for the senior team and also serves as the home facility for the club's Reserves and Academy. The total grassed surface area, including football pitches is 24,446 m² in a total surface area of 28,888 m², it contains all the necessary amenities for a club level. This includes an aqua-therapy centre, massage room, treatment room, weight room, relaxation room, offices for staff and presidential hierarchy, press zone and a recreational area. THE KIT The first kit design was founded after a merger between Paris FC and Stade Saint-Germain in 1970 and was mainly solid red. A fashion designer collaborated with the club to design the shirt which would become a strong symbol of the club in 1973. PSG adopted the red and blue colors of Paris FC and combined them with the white of Stade Saint-Germain. The shirt was blue with a red central vertical bar framed by white edgings. Rumours has it that the kit designer was so impressed by Ajax's eye-catching strip, he used it as the inspiration for PSG's kit, though he changed the colour to match the French flag. CREST The first crest of PSG appeared in 1970 and consisted of a ball and a vessel which are powerful symbols of the city of Paris. After Paris FC split from Stade Saint-Germain, which kept with the name of Paris Saint-Germain, it was changed to the current crest: the red silhouette of the Eiffel Tower and the white royal cradle of Louis XIV between its legs on a blue background with white edging. SUPPORTERS The supporters of the club are known as parisiens. In France about 11% of the population are said to be Paris Saint-Germain supporters and worldwide they are the second most popular French club. The Kop of Boulogne is a stand in the Parc des Princes which mainly housed the Boulogne Boys, a supporter group associated with the club. The owners demands good results in the league, in the cup and in the Champions League. GENERAL PSG is an established top club in the French Ligue 1, predicted to finish 1st. The squad, captained by right-back Christophe Jallet, is highly ambitious and valued at £258M. Their biggest rivals are Marseille. FINANCES As mention before, the club is one of the richest clubs in the world and has a bank balance of almost £75M. The owners will also pump money into the club 1-2 times per year. PSG also have a kit sponsorship worth £5.21M per season until 2014, and an additional kit sponsorship worth £3.04M per season until 2014. Transfer Budget: £43,478,260 Wage Budget: £1,932,121 (per week) With £43.5M to spend on new players I recommend not to use monthly installments. More money will become available after every transfer window. AFFILIATED CLUBS Five clubs from France and one club from USA are affiliated clubs with PSG, all feeder clubs. As part of the long term plan for the club, Al-Khelaïfi brought in legendary footballer, Leonardo, as the new Director of Football. In addition, he attempted to bring in David Beckham, Alexandre Pato and Carlos Tévez to play for the club, but failed. The squad are limited to four players without EU citizenship, but several non-European players in the squad have dual citizenship with an EU country. Also, players from countries in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific that are signatories to the Cotonou Agreement are not counted as non-European players due to the Kolpak ruling. ★ = PLAYER RATING The player rating is a combination of a player's current ability and potential ability assigned by club assistant manager Paul Clement. GOALKEEPERS There are currently 2 goalkeepers in the first team squad. Nicolas Douchez ★★★★★★★★★★ Enjoyed his time at Rennes as a first choice goalkeeper before he signed for Paris Saint-Germain. I don't think he is good enough to be first choice here but he is good enough to start some games when needed, and is one of the best backup goalkeepers in the league. Two years left on his contract and at the age of 32 he shouldn't be rewarded with an extension. Nation: France | Age: 32 | Position: Goalkeeper | Number: 1 Salvatore Sirigu ★★★★★★★★★★ Sirigu was signed from Palermo last season and played all 38 games in the league for PSG. The other one is Sissoko. Matuidi should be instructed to stay back all the time and break up attacks. His good displays in the league last season has earned him a spot in the French national team. Nation: France | Age: 17 | Position: Central Midfielder | Number: 31 Javier Pastore ★★★★★★★★★★ This is Pastore's second season at the club and last season he scored 13 goals in the league from an advanced midfield position. A good start to his career at the club. His technical ability is world class, so is his flair. Pastore is a player to keep at the club and not sell at any cost. Nation: Argentina | Age: 23 | Position: Attacking Midfielder | Number: 27 Thiago Motta ★★★★★★★★★★ Thiago Motta has played for Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Genoa and Internazionale before signing for PSG in January 2012. He is a physical player, good in the air, good at tackling and known for dangerous his long shots. Guillaume Hoarau ★★★★★★★★★★ Hoarau is a tall and strong target man who's very good in the air but lacks in other areas. He only scored 5 goals from 20 games in the league last season and must improve if he wants a new contract. Contract until 2013. Nation: France | Age: 28 | Position: Striker | Number: 9 Ezequiel Lavezzi ★★★★★★★★★★ Lavezzi signed for the club in the summer from Napoli and will provide the club with some eye catching skills and movements. He's got great pace and flair, but he has to find the net more often if he wants to be a regular player in the team. Nation: Argentina | Age: 27 | Position: Striker | Number: 11 Zlatan Ibrahimovic ★★★★★★★★★★ Ibrahimovic is not only the best player at the club, but also the best player in the league and one of the best strikers in the world. He joined PSG from A.C Milan in the summer and could be used in many roles upfront. He is strong and could hold up the ball, or he could be make forward runs and try to finishing as much as possible. Ibrahimovic will guarantee 20-30 goals per season. Nation: Sweden | Age: 30 | Position: Striker | Number: 18 Kevin Gameiro ★★★★★★★★★★ Gameiro didn't score enough goals last season to be regarded as a good signing. He sometimes lost his place in the team and didn't even came on from the bench when he was a substitution. As a backup for Ibrahimovic he is really good and can still produce goals. The division is open to the best reserve teams in France and amateur clubs in France, although only the amateur clubs with the most points of each group at the end of the season are eligible for promotion to the Championnat National. The PSG reserve team has never won the reserves title of the Championnat de France Amateur. ★ = PLAYER RATING The player rating is a combination of a player's current ability and potential ability assigned by club assistant manager Paul Clement. GOALKEEPERS There are currently 3 goalkeepers in the reserve team squad. Two of them will be posted here. Alphonse Areola ★★★★★★★★★★ Areola has the potential to become a leading Ligue 1 goalkeeper in the future and has been compared to Genoa's Sébastien Frey. At his age he needs games to develop, so a regular run in the reserve team is good for him. Could also recommend to ask an older player at the club to take him under his wing and act as a role model. Nation: France | Age: 19 | Position: Goalkeeper | Number: 16 Ronan Le Crom ★★★★★★★★★★ Le Crom was a surprise signing by PSG in January 2012 from AS Nancy. The squad is now a mix of world class players, rotation players, hot prospects and players with no future at the club. In this squad analysis we will take a closer look on who is needed and who is not needed. GOALKEEPERS The club has a total of 8 goalkeepers and I would say this is a position not needed to be strength. First of all, Sirigu who was signed from Palermo is a very good goalkeeper and did some excellent saves last season - he has actually earned himself a place on the Italian national team thanks to his recent performances. Douchez and Le Crom are both decent backups. Both are experienced and won't demand regular first team football. The future of the club looks bright with 19 years old Areola in the reserve team and 16 years old Maignan in the U19 team. Both are excellent prospects. No signings are required. However, if a world class player becomes available - someone like Buffon, don't hesitate. Sign him. Key Player: Salvatore Sirigu | Hot Prospect: Alphonse Areola | Not Needed: Ronan Le Crom RATING: ★★★★★★★★★★ DEFENDERS The club has a total of 26 defenders in the squad and even though PSG hasn't one of the best defence in Europe it's a large first team squad and all positions are covered really well. Maxwell is the best left back at the club, But he isn't a top class player like Clichy or Marcelo and should be replaced in the next seasons. The captain, Jallet, is a good team player but just like Maxwell he lacks a bit of quality. The new signing from Ajax van der Wiel could also play at right back and looks like a very exciting player. Thiago Silva is one of the best central defenders in the world, and the question is who should partner him in the defence, Alex or Sakho? Both are good players. Armand, Camara and Tiéné are decent backups. Key Player: Thiago Silva | Hot Prospect: Stéphane Lambèse | Not Needed: Diego Lugano RATING: ★★★★★★★★★★ MIDFIELDERS The club has a total of 29 midfielders and this is an interesting part of the team. The midfield can be organized in many different formations. Many players are capable of playing down the flanks and many players are capable of playing in the middle of the pitch. Pastore is one of the best midfielders at the club and should be playing in an advanced midfield role and be scoring goals. Chantôme, Bodmer, Thiago Motta, Matuidi and Sissoko are some other good central midfielders. The two youngsters in the first team - Rabiot and Verratti are both very promising and should get many minutes on the pitch. Ménez and Nenê are two attacking players and will produce assists and goals. Don't forget to update you with the latest news about Bahebeck's season-long loan at Troyes. I wouldn't say some special player are needed, but a new signing will always strengthen the team. Maybe another winger. Key Player: Javier Pastore | Hot Prospect: Marco Verratti | Not Needed: Everton Santos RATING: ★★★★★★★★★★ FORWARDS The club has a total of 11 forwards but mostly of them will never be good enough to be a part of the first team. Some new players may be needed. Especially young players. Ongenda is the only promising striker from the U19 team. With the financial backing PSG shouldn't have any problems in securing some of the worlds best young strikers. When it comes to the first team Ibrahimovic is the biggest star - one of the best strikers in the world. He will score goals, and many of them. Gameiro is another striker in the first team, he's got pace and an eye for goal. The third natural striker in the first team is Lavezzi. These strikers should be enough if you play with one striker on top, but if you play with two or more signings are required. Insigne from Napoli reminds a bit about Lavezzi and is an interesting player. So is Ba from Newcastle. Paris Saint-Germain doesn't have the players to play counter-attacking football, instead they have the players to play the ball on the ground and control games. Pastore, Thiago Motta and Verratti are that kind of players. FORMATIONS Paris Saint-Germain wants play possession football and the 4-3-2-1, the 4-1-2-1-2 and the 4-5-1 formations fits the club perfectly. 4-3-2-1 Sirigu - Maxwell, Silva, Alex, Jallet - Matuidi, Verratti, Thiago Motta - Pastore, Lavezzi - Ibrahimovic The 4-3-2-1 formation will guarantee domination in the centre of the pitch. It has a flat four-man defence with two central defenders and two fullbacks, then it has three central midfielders, two attacking midfielders and a striker. The fullbacks could be very attacking and providing support down the flanks, or they could stay back and always be available for a pass. The three central midfielders is the controlling part of the team. They decide the tempo of the game and should play short passes and not be to attacking. Verratti could be assigned to a deep-lying playmaker role. Matuidi is the one of them who break down attacks. The two attacking midfielders will support the lone striker and will always try to create goal opportunities. Nenê is also perfect for this role. The striker should try to stay in his position upfront and always be available for a pass. Almost like a target man. 4-1-2-1-2 Sirigu - Maxwell, Silva, Alex, Jallet - Sissoko - Thiago Motta, Verratti - Pastore - Gameiro, Ibrahimovic The 4-1-2-1-2 formation will also guarantee domination in the centre of the pitch and is called a diamond formation. It has a flat four-man defence with two central defenders and two fullbacks, one defensive midfielder, two central midfielders, one attacking midfielder and two strikers. The fullbacks should be instructed to make forward runs often to give support on the flanks. The defensive midfielder here is Sissoko - a big physical player who sits just in front the central defenders and stop attacks. The two central midfielders, in this case Thiago Motta and Verratti, should be deep-lying playmakers and support the three attacking players with through balls. The attacking midfielder could have a free role and roam around and be looking for space. The two attackers could be one strong and one fast, one coming deep and the other one making forward runs. 4-5-1 Sirigu - Maxwell, Silva, Alex, Jallet - Sissoko - Bodmer, Verratti - Nenê, Ménez - Ibrahimovic The 4-5-1 formation is a good choice when attacking wingers are playing like Nenê, Ménez and Lavezzi. It has a flat four-man defence with two central defenders and two fullbacks, one defensive midfielder, two central midfielders, two wingers and one striker. With three midfielders playing in central roles it should be easy to control the game against teams with only two central midfielders, and with two fullbacks and two wingers attacks will be created on the flanks. One of the two central midfielders should be able to make forward runs and support the lonely striker. Pastore could also play in that position. LIGUE 1 Ligue 1 is the French professional league for association football clubs. It is the country's primary football competition and serves as the top division of the French football league system. Ligue 1 is one of two divisions making up the Ligue de Football Professionnel, the other being Ligue 2. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with Ligue 2. Seasons run from August to May, with teams playing 38 games each totaling 380 games in the season. Most games are played on Saturdays and Sundays, with a few games played during weekday evenings. Play is regularly suspended the last weekend before Christmas for two weeks, before returning in the second week of January. Ligue 1 is one of the top national leagues, currently ranked fifth in Europe behind the English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, the German Bundesliga and the Italian Serie A. The league was inaugurated on 11 September 1932 under the name National before switching to Division 1 after a year of existence. The name lasted until 2002 before switching to its current name. The current champions are Montpellier, who won the first title of their history in the 2011–12 season. COUPE DE FRANCE Coupe de France is the premier knockout cup competition in French football organized by the French Football Federation. The cup competition is named after Charles Simon, a French sportsman who died while serving in World War I and is open to all amateur and professional football clubs in France, including clubs based in the overseas departments and territories. The final is played at the Stade de France and the winner of the Coupe de France qualifies for the group stage of the UEFA Europa League. The current champions are Lyon, who defeated Quevilly 1–0 in the final of the 2011–12 competition. TROPHÉE DES CHAMPIONS The Trophée des champions is a French association football trophy contested in an annual match between the champions of Ligue 1 and the winners of the Coupe de France. COUPE DE LA LIGUE The Coupe de la Ligue, known outside of France as the French League Cup, is a knockout cup competition in French football organized by the Ligue de Football Professionnel. The tournament was established in 1994 and, unlike the Coupe de France, is only open to professional clubs in France, which play in country's top three football divisions, though only two professional clubs currently play in the Championnat National. The current holders of the cup are Marseille, who beat Lyon in the 2012 Final and became the first club to win the cup three times in a row. CHAMPIONS LEAGUE The Champions League is an annual continental club football competition organised by UEFA since 1955 for the top football clubs in Europe. It is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world and the most prestigious club competition in European football. The tournament consists of several stages. In the present format, it begins in mid-July with three knockout qualifying rounds and a play-off round. The 10 surviving teams join 22 seeded teams in the group stage, in which there are eight groups of four teams each. The eight group winners and eight runners-up enter the final knockout phase, which culminates with the final match in May. The reigning champions of the competition are Chelsea, after beating Bayern Munich 4–3 on penalties, following a 1–1 draw after extra time. Paris Saint-Germain are competing in Europe's elite competition for the first time since 2004 after finishing second in Ligue 1 last season. FUTURE TRANSFER During the Summer of 2012, both Manchester United and Internazionale were reported to be interested in signing Lucas Moura. In August 2012, Paris Saint-Germain won the battle and announced the player would be moving to the club in January 2013. The other three are Alex, Maxwell and Thiago Silva. START A NEW GAME Finally it's time to start a new game and begin your adventure with Paris Saint-Germain on Football Manager 2013. I recommend you to load many leagues, especially leagues from England, Italy, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Belgium and Portugal. Don't forget to load all leagues in France - in this way your reserve team will play in the lowest league that's loaded. It's up to you who you want to sign and sell, but why not invest the money in some of the worlds best youngsters? Some new coaches and scouts are also needed.
