FIFA's preview:

Honduras vs. Chile Preview

The Chile side coached by Marcelo 'El Loco' Bielsa were one of the genuine revelations of the qualifying stage for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, the Argentine strategist's hard-running outfit finishing second in the South American section behind Brazil. Up against them in their opening encounter in Group H are CONCACAF side Honduras, returning to football's biggest stage after a 28-year absence.

The match

Honduras-Chile, Group H, Nelspruit, Wednesday 16 June, 13.30 (local time)

In a section containing tournament favourites Spain, the remaining three teams would appear condemned to battling it out for a single Round of 16 berth. That being the case, this opening duel looks vital to both sides' hopes of progressing. On paper at least, the attacking prowess of Bielsa's Chile may give them the edge, given they were 32-goal top scorers in the South American Zone. One concern, however, is the fitness of Real Zaragoza's Humberto Suazo, their ten-goal leading marksmen in qualifying, who is battling to recover from a muscle strain.

His Honduran namesake David Suazo is in a similar situation. A pulled muscle in the warm-up game against Romania could well force the Genoa hitman out of the Chile match, while there was bad news on the eve of the game with key attacking midfielder Julio Cesar de Leon ruled out of the tournament with a muscle problem. These heavyweight absentees will pile even more responsibility on the shoulders of 36-year-old striker Carlos Pavon, who struck the winning goal against El Salvador which sent Los Catrachos to South Africa.

Players to watch

Wilson Palacios v Matias Fernandez

Despite the knocks and niggles that have cast a cloud of uncertainty over the encounter, both teams have their playmakers intact and ready to assume creative duties. For Honduras that job falls to Wilson Palacios, who is normally a defensive midfielder at club level with Tottenham Hotspur. Chile's string-pulling should be done by Matias Fernandez of Sporting Lisbon, though given the doubts surrounding Suazo and fellow forwards Alexis Sanchez and Esteban Paredes, Bielsa could also bring in fellow schemer Jorge Valdivia in a more advanced role.

The stat

2 — On their only previous trip to the finals at Spain 1982, Honduras picked up two points via 1-1 draws with the host nation and Northern Ireland. La Bicolor missed out on a spot in the next round, however, after falling to a 1-0 defeat against Yugoslavia.

What they say

"Chile are a tough team to play, they don't give you any space and work the ball very well in midfield. They're the type of side that need everybody on their game to really click. So, when we have the ball we need to keep hold of it, and win it back quickly to be able to cause them problems," Hendry Thomas, Honduras midfielder.

"Why shouldn't we aim to reach the last four? Our team's capable of getting great results, but we're also aware that we mustn't get carried away. For the moment, our most important game is the one against Honduras," Claudio Bravo, Chile captain and goalkeeper.

Voice of the fans

"With the players they have Chile should beat Honduras, but games are won on the pitch. It'll be very tough, and if we slip up then it'll make the World Cup very difficult for us. Particularly because our other two games will be even harder, especially the one against Spain. I'm hoping that we win the game and show our opponents plenty of respect. Chile have no right to underestimate anybody. We mustn't forgot what we've done in the past," vicmar, FIFA.com user.

The question

Which two teams do you think will qualify for the Round of 16 from Group H?

Probably Line-ups:

Honduras: Valladares; Mendoza, El Muma Bernardez, Figueroa and Emelio Izaguirre; El Lobo Guevara, El Mago Palacios, Ramoncito Nunez and El (Super Saiyan) Mosky Alvarez; Carlos Pavon and Georgie El Avatar Welcome.

Manager: Reinaldo Rueda

Referee: Eddy Maillet (Seychelles)

Political uprising, Death of Families, you name it...has brought us to this moment. a population of just about 8 Million will watch this. Rich and Poor, Young and Old. Catrachos from all walks of life will be tuning in and watching something they haven't seen in 28 long suffering years. For one day, Honduras will be standing at a complete hault to watch the spectacle that is the World Cup. This is what Rueda's 4 year has come down to. 90 minutes on the pitch, a 90 minutes that will be salivated by each and every Catracho watching. The OOs and AAs and even UUFFs will be heard throughout the country and the Garra Catracha flame will be burning strong in the soul of each and every Honduran as Tu Bandera is being played at 5:30 Local Honduran time. Wednesday...the day the World witnessed Punta, The day that will never be forgotten, the day that will bring tears to many...Wednesday, The day Honduras becomes more than just a futbol team :)

No clue what their starting 11 is. All I know is Valdivia may be playing uptop as striker seeing as they don't have a true striker aside from Mancilla and El Chupete. Mancilla retired from international futbol iirc and El Chupete still not ready.

also Honduran line-up can be subject to change.

Also I think this game will be the decider in the group who will finish 2nd.

From the Chile thread:

The starting XI will depend on what we go for eventually.

4-2-1-3:

Bravo in goal; Vidal, Contreras, Ponce, Medel in defence; Carmona, Isla/Beausejour, Fernández/Valdivia in midfield; González, Suazo, Sánchez up front.

3-3-1-3:

Bravo in goal; Vidal, Ponce, Medel in defence; Carmona, Isla/Beausejour, Millar, Fernández/Valdivia in midfield; González, Suazo, Sánchez up front.

Personally, I think Beausejour is better than Isla, Fernández has more raw talent than Valdivia but is suffering from his lack of first-team football and Orellana should be given a chance over González due to the latter's lack of scoring.

Would hope the 3-3-1-3 as Honduras are a beatable team for Chile, and without Suazo, Orellana and Beaujesor(sp)/Gonzalez with Sanchez up top

However, the BBC Preview is here:

TEAM NEWS

Both nations are sweating on the fitness of a striker named Suazo. Honduran David Suazo, of Inter Milan, is struggling to recover in time from a leg muscle injury, while Chile's main goalscorer Humberto Suazo is nursing a left thigh problem.

Neither player was originally expected to feature in this game but both remain hopeful of being involved. If they miss out, Georgie Welcome of Honduras and Chile's Esteban Paredes are the favourites to take their place.

Honduras midfielder Julio Cesar de Leon has emerged as a doubt with a hamstring injury, although Tottenham's Wilson Palacios has overcome a thigh complaint. West Brom's Gonzalo Jara is poised to start in Chile's three-man defence, but midfielder Rodrigo Millar is struggling with a calf strain.

MATCH PREVIEW

The date of this match carries great resonance for both countries: Honduras made their World Cup debut 28 years ago to the day, while Chile earned their last World Cup victory on 16 June 1962.

That win for Chile, at the expense of Yugoslavia, was as host nation in the third-place play-off. They have since endured a 13-match winless run in World Cup finals, the equal-third worst sequence in the tournament's history.

Nonetheless, Chile are in confident mood after qualifying impressively for the first time since 1998. They finished second in the South American qualifying group, a mere point behind Brazil, and Argentinean coach Marcelo Bielsa has forged a dynamic, attacking side in a bold 3-3-1-3 formation.

For Honduras, victory is merely being in South Africa. Qualification for their second World Cup finals came when the USA denied Costa Rica with a 94th-minute equaliser, bringing welcome relief to Honduras after months of political turmoil. Nobody fancied them in 1982 either, but they held hosts Spain to a draw in their opening game and also took a point off Northern Ireland.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

-This is the first competitive match between these two nations.

- Chile lead Honduras by three wins to two in their five previous meetings. Honduras won 2-0 in the most recent encounter, in January 2009, with Carlos Pavon and Amado Guevara scoring in Florida.

Honduras

- Honduras are seeking their first World Cup victory. They drew two and lost one of their three group matches in 1982, conceding one goal in each game.

- They are winless in their last five matches, failing to score in four of them (D2, L3).

- Their biggest win against a South American side was a 2-0 quarter-final defeat of Brazil at the 2001 Copa America.

Chile

- Chile have only once progressed beyond the World Cup group stage in six attempts outside of their own country. In 1998 they reached the last 16, when they lost 4-1 to Brazil.

- Chile are winless in 13 World Cup games (D6, L7), the worst current run in the finals. Mexico also fared as badly between 1930 and 1962, while South Korea went 14 matches without a victory until 2002 and Bulgaria endured a record 17-match winless streak between 1962 and 1994.

- Chile have won eight of their last 10 matches prior to the World Cup, including the last three.

- Humberto Suazo was the top South American scorer in World Cup qualifying with 10 goals.

- Head coach Marcelo Bielsa was in charge of Argentina when they failed to progress from the group stage at the 2002 World Cup.
