Technically The Serbs, as Franz Ferdinand as killed ehence kicking off loads of treaties signalling the start of WW1, then the Treaty of Versailles was written by the French and British to nearly destroy Germany, USA didn't want anything to do wit hit as they knew it'd cause another war, then that triggered responses from all the nationalists including many Putschs and assassinations against the Socialists, and the wall Street Crash destroyed the German economy meaning that in the next election the publi went to the only option they saw fit to run the country, which sadly was a big mistake as the party they chose was the NSDAP. So it's all a bit complicated.

eddietheorc is the type of guy that probaly thinks the war was just england vs germany

Remember though that the assassination of Franz Ferdinand was just the trigger, had the 1st WW not started then, chances are it would have started later anyway due to some other pretext, as the conditions for the war were already set.

Congratulations on a great game today. Didn't use to like Germany due to their style of football, but the football during these last two World Cups has just been a beauty to watch. Have also had an extra eye on Argentina, so will be difficult to root for anybody in the Quarter. Shame that isn't the final tbh. Will hopefully be a cracking game with both teams going forward a fair bit.

I rate Germany's chances as better tbh. Germany are pretty good in central defence, which generally is where Argentina attack. While Argentina are a bit weak on the fullbacks, where Germany can hit and hurt them. Will be a very interesting match :)

Hahaha hilarious. That the cheapest trick in the book.

**** me, all this ******** on who started the war. Germany supported an lunatic , they invaded Poland and killed millions of jews. Franz Ferdinand was the cause of WW1, Which ****ed over everyone including Britain, the economy was in tatters and most people still lived in Victorian slums. So why didn't we elect an looney ?

Don't you question what you are taught at school ? There excuses for Germany because it would create too much hatred and people would of never let go, which does not fit into the politicians plans.

Germany is nothing. A cheap excuse. Which Britain and every other European country will be, due to the foundation of the EU.

Welcome Bros.

How the hell did people start talking about the war???

And why the hell do people still talk about something that ended 65 years ago, long before most of the users here were even born.

"Who started the war?" This kind of question is just stupid... "I didnt! And nobody I know did... so what does this have to do with us?"

Now back to the present... Germany played well today but I don't think they're going to beat Argentina. Germany's central defense and their two central midfielders are too weak.

However, Argentina's defense doesn't look too impressive or solid tbh

Are you by any chance a member of the EDL or BNP?

@eddie.

No.

You would love that, then it would be easy to avoid me or discredit me.

The fact is it scares you, because it does not fit into your own world that you have build in that head of yours.

Like the majority of the country, i voted for the Tories.

But in my view all politicians are greedy and are not to be trusted. I hate big corporations such as FIFA, they only ruin things... because they just care about money.

They probably won't keep a clean sheet, but IMHO Messi, Tevez and Higuaín should look very good against Mertesacker, Friedrich, Schweinsteiger and Khedira.

And Mascherano should be able to stop Özil, he's a better defensive player than Barry. :D

Still don't like to be proven wrong on your personal anti-Schweinsteiger agenda eh? ;)

Proven wrong? Why? Schweinsteiger and Khedira have been decent so far but with both of them on the pitch Germany's midfield is very vulnerable. Neither Schweinsteiger nor Khedira are good defensively and if I were Löw I'd worry about that a lot... maybe even to such an extent that I'd be thinking about fielding an extra holding midfielder (maybe Boateng) to stop Messi.

Germany won't play against a clueless side like England anymore... now the real challenge starts.

JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Guys, can we please leave the politics, wwII stuff etc out of this thread, this is football and only football. The english got stuffed cos they wernt good enough, goal disallowed or not, Germany scored 4, which would have still been 2 more than England, deserved it.

Argentina will be a tough cookie, but these lads go in with an attitude into games that they will not be frightened of them, its a team effort, they dont have to "stop" messi, Argentina are going to be worried enough on their own by Özil, Müller etc. Should be a corker!

fantastic performance by germany. probably the best match i have seen a the world cup so far.

argentina will be a tough nut to crack though. they have loads of attacking talent and it will be the toughest test so far for the german defenders i believe. they also have an excellent dmc in mascherano, and their fullbacks dont seem to venture forward too much, which suggests they wont be counterattacked to death like england was today. on the other hand their defenders havent been really put to the test yet, something i hope ozil and company will do :)

Müller's been one of Germany's best players so far. I wonder though, is he the ideal replacement for Klose once he hangs up his boots? Can't think of anyone better for the job at this moment in time, to be honest.

They are completely and i mean completely different players. Mueller needs to be used in a fluid attacking system, as his greatest quality is the ability to sniff spaces and making the opponent pay for leaving them open. The lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 has a completely different function. He needs to occupy the central defenders, put pressure on them and if possible pull them out of position. Klose did a magnificent job at that vs. England.

Mueller lacks the physical presence and the tenacity for that role. Remember how the German offense wasn't able to penetrate Ghana's box with Cacau up front ? That's exactly what would happen with Mueller as well. For counter attacking it just might work but against organized teams with a decent defense it's never gonna produce results.

Unless Gomez or one of the young guns step up their game a change to a two or three man attack is in the cards after Klose retires. Currently there just isn't any striker of the quality to play alone up front for Germany. ( If anyone mentions Kiessling I'll have to slap you silly ! )

Have you even seen Schweinsteiger this year. He upped his defensive game a lot this year. I dont think he is a destryoer, but he defiantely plays the defensive part a lot better than Kedhira. And i dont think only caring about Messi would help a lot. Lets just play our game as long ad we have the ball and score Messi wont be a facor. :D

Sami Khedira is a good choice on defensive midfielders, even Schweinsteiger is on the opponent's half he can shield the German defense.

Besides, Germany is good at short passing, especially Ozil and Muller. With Ozil behind Klose, the two cms don't have to push that forward.

Don't bother. :D

I'll continue to keep my expectations as low-profile as Löw is doing things, at least he does in public*. It's a game per game kind of thing, even doing well, this is the knockout stages of the World Cup. One mistake and you could be out. I still think this is a better squad than in 2008, the on the ball qualities of this midfield are hard to argue against, and Germany entered the EUROs as favourites for many pundits and betting outlets back then. The opposition in these World Cup quarters is all strong throughout. The key in German defense so far for me was making Friedrich look like a centre back deserving of international accolade rather than the relegation-battled trainwreck he had been during the first half of the season with Hertha, let's see how he can cope with Tevez and Higuain though.

Apparently Özil is becoming a target at Barcelona now too. Will get really difficult for Bremen to keep him for much longer.

* the international news speaking about how Löw had plans to "embarass" his opponents is a semi-popular example of a translation gone wrong, and a news spreading everywhere without further checking. Lazy journalism.

With the exception of two or three matches he did fine actually. Playing in a back four alongside Piszczek, Pejcinovic and von Bergen and behind a midfield doing absolutely nothing for either offense nor defense will make even the best of defenders look bad though.

It's a real shame that Germany v Argentina had to happen so early on the finals; it would've made a great final. That said, I think a GERvARG quarter may well be a better spectacle than a GERvARG final would've been, so maybe football is the winner :)

If it's anything like 2006, it should be a great game.

Yes, fantastic game, great night out, unbelievable result, even better than the England result, beating the argies by 4 goals to nil is absolutely effing amazing to be quite fair!

I agree. It's just ashame that the world would rather see it as Argentina were awful rather than Germany were good. It was the same story when we thrashed England. :thdn: Also, it makes me laugh to re-read this thread now and see all the people who thought Kurayni should've been played instead of Klose. :D

Same with Poldi though, how many didnt want him going to the WC, now he´s done well again at the big stage, just wish he would pass it more now and again instead of shoot!

But yes, its always the others playing "bad" apparently, guess Spain will probably end up playing "badly" too!

Even the Dutch like the German national team now! Stopped watching the game 5 minutes before time yesterday because I had to get some groceries before the shops closed, and as I was walking down the street I heard loud cheering and the noise of many vuvuzela's coming from various houses, but I really wasn't sure whether that meant 4-0 or 3-1. As it turned out, all those voices were in favour of Germany. Rightfully so, of course, but I thought it significant.

Amazing game yesterday. Yeah, I am hoping for a Holland - Germany final.

Khedira has a minor injury. I am quite sure that he will play.

Possible candidates for the right wing (as Müller is banned) are Cacau, Kroos and Trochowski. I would like to see Cacau there but it will be Trochowski especially as Cacau was injured for a couple of days and is still not totally fit.
