The FM21 Youth Academy Challenge

Recommended Posts

So I've been taking a break from my South Shields game as we're in a bit of a rut in the Championship, our players are good enough not be relegated but, aside from an amazing run of form, we're not good enough to be in a real promotion battle so each season is just feeling a bit meh. I went and tried some other saves but I keep being drawn back, having a real tactical think though as if I'm going to be stuck at this level for a few more seasons I at least want to enjoy the football we play :D

Also I'm thinking I'm expecting too much from my players right now, our best players are 22 and under so should be a couple years away from really being at their potential. But yeah, I'm back

If you've read my seasonal updates, you might have noticed that I don't like Larne, and that they are my nemisis team of this save. Well, this is the reason:

I've lost 18(!) matches against them!

Got a question for those of you who have done saves all over the world, what is the best location to do a save for The club’s finances? I know that Germany is good for the prize money, but is there any other countries in the lower leagues that the finances are not going to ruin me?

Well, Turkey has a lot of money, but perhaps it's just the top tier. I think you get £300k per win there or something. Here in Northern Ireland I haven't had any issues with finances. I'm slowly gaining some, but I won't be anywhere near rich before I get into CL or further in the others.

Yes that's just the top leagues in Turkey, the finances are tough before you get to the Super League

End of Season Review

Season 2029/30

Friar Lane & Epworth

Season Summary

A decent run in the F. A. Cup was the dessert for what was an excellent season as we won the title and secured promotion to the seventh tier.

Season Details

League Table - We won the league quite comfortably and it was clinched with two games to spare.

League Fixtures 1 & 2 - We churned out so many wins, we were unstoppable at times.

F. A. Cup - A good cup run as we made it to the fourth qualifying round before narrowly losing away to fifth tier side Darlington.

F. A. Trophy - Despite dominating Bury AFC in the second qualifying round, we somehow lost at home.

Southern League Cup - We made it as far as the fourth round before losing away to Rushall Olympic, who play in the same division as we do.

Pre Season Friendlies - After just three losses in our fourteen games, I was delighted with the pre season campaign.

Squad - The departures have hurt the overall quality, though we are still good enough for a top five finish at the higher level next season I think.

Squad Dynamics - Everyone loves everyone else.

Transfers In - None.

Transfers Out - Four key first team players departed, though all have sell on clauses.  The chairman though £1,200 was just too good to turn down.

Youth Candidates - Not as good as recent seasons, though a few have a chance of first team football in the future, Rasharn Bird YP30A129 for example.

Finances - Despite the sales, we are still in the red.  I hope to be able to cash in on the sell on clauses soon.

Key Players

Tom Taylor YP25E53 - The striker is now playing way above his level but he is still so prolific.  He still averages over a goal per game for the club.

Peter Sokol YP26A65 - The best defender at the club, the Slovakian was immense all season.

Jack Deer YP26C67 - Playing on the left wing, the teenager is an assist machine.

Michael Buron YP24C35 - The midfielder had an ok season, though he is capable of so much more.

Scott Shelley YP25A49 - Now the number one at the club, he often makes silly errors that cost points.

Next Season

I think we can challenge for the play offs.  I doubt we are good enough for automatic promotion, though you never know.

Got a question for those of you who have done saves all over the world, what is the best location to do a save for The club’s finances? I know that Germany is good for the prize money, but is there any other countries in the lower leagues that the finances are not going to ruin me?

In Austria's second div, you get 400k every 10 games you start with 7 Austrian's/youths in the squad or something like that

I'm selling my best player after this season. Why, I hear you ask? His contract is up at the end and he were not willing to talk about a new one. So when I managed to get this deal landed, I took it. I'm sad to see him leave, but at least I got in 50% of next sale, so I hope he goes for a pretty penny!

He's wanted by Atalanta now, I think that my ability to keep hold of Fedele Landi is coming to an end sadly. Makes me wonder how much I'll get for my first ever wonderkid to come through my youth intakes in the Youth Academy Challenge.

I'm hoping for close to £20M or having a deal that will see me getting 50% of the next deal, which I could see being over £50M.

Given it's at Southampton, hopefully he won't just be released.

Yeah, that's the worry. But I'm not losing him later than I would anyway. So it's not a loss at any rate.

For the first time in a long time, a player has been poached from our youth system and it's by Cagliari. I'm terrified that this guy is actually pretty good. I guess I'll find out soon.

We had three players poached from this year's intake so I'm not surprised.  But damn, this group is awful.

If we were still in non-league football, this might be a good class but for League Two...most of these guys will never see the senior team and if they do it will be in reserve role.

We did it!

I had the feeling that a good outcome could be expected this year, as we now have talent in all positions and everyone continues to develop. The play-off seemed realistic, but instead we got a promotion on the penultimate matchday.

Is it possible at all to stay up in the Eredivisie? I doubt it - and many of our players may want to leave if we move down again. On the other hand, there is a lot of income to be gained, both through prize money and possible player sales. Our intake continues to provide good players and the talents are equipped with long contracts with one-year options, so the future is reasonably bright.

Our attacking duo Mulder and Mestdagh have scored 43 goals in total and hit 19 assists. Superb! 16-year-old Bas Koenders was promoted in January and has taken the squad by storm; 5 goals and 3 assists in six games. He looks like a natural replacement for the profile Bederka, which has a contract expiration in 2031 and does not appear to extend.

Season 2021 Review

Coaching Profile Squad Transfers

So finished my 1st year in Sweden and it was quite an experience. Every highlight seemed to have a random result, strikers that have a 1v1 with the GK always seemed 50-50, just like my thrown ins going to my player vs an opponent. That being said outside of the 1st 2 months we weren't really threatened to be relegated, which is surprising because our defense and midfield were BAD. We finished 9th and was mathematically saved from relegation with 4 games left.  We played a mainly route one style with most of our goals coming from deep balls find Target Man Marcus Ekenberg who would head it forward to whoever was his striker partner, or long balls that the strikers could just run under for a 1v1. We did also score a decent number of goals from set pieces. The board most have been ok with that because they gave me a 2 year contract. I did manage to grab a coaching course in the preseason so I'm know coaching at a National C level. Our season ends in September and our Youth Intake is in October so I'm still looking forward to see what who comes through.

I'm also deciding to explore the idea of doing a YAC save in either Finland or Austria, because I've got affiliates in those countries with Siena and they're both unplayable at the beginning of the save. Would also be a nice link between my Siena save and the next one I could end up doing if I can't takeover any new clubs either. I've already created saves with Anadia, Ascoli, N.E.C. and Tabor Sezana just to get a feel of the clubs in question, but I'm getting the idea of creating other YAC saves based on who I get as my affiliates is a concept that I would love to try and use for what countries I manage my YAC saves in the future.

I'm realising that the possibility of losing Landi to the Premier League is a very real deal now. I've finished my 17th season at the club and this is the offer I get given. What a time to be alive. Makes me wonder if Man City will keep an eye on my club for more players like Landi in the future...

Farnborough 2033-34 Season Review

340?cb=20140811140034

Fixtures 1, 2, 3 - A difficult middle of the season due to a lot of matches and squad rotation.  In the beginning and the end of the season, when we were playing one match per week, allowed me to play my strongest XI and we started to play some good football and solidify our position in the table.

League Table - As a season wound down, Tranmere, Swindon and Farnborough solidified themselves as the top three teams in the league and earned the automatic promotion berths to League One. Accrington improved on the poor first half of the season to could not avoid the drop.  Plymouth will be joining them in non-league football next season.

Playoff Tree - They didn't finalized their spot in the playoffs until the last day of the season.  York City caught fire in the playoffs and will make the leap into League One along with Tranmere, Swindon and Farnborough.

FA Cup - An easy run to the third round where a road trip to Liverpool awaited us.  This was our best performance in the third round as Liverpool needed an stoppage time goal to beat us 1-0.

League Cup - Battled hard against Bristol Rovers before losing 2-1 in the first round.

Papa John's Trophy - A trophy that I didn't have a lot of time for this season.  We put up a good fight but exited the competition with three losses.

xG General Performance - As a former goalkeeper, this is the type of football that I enjoy playing.  Solid defense paired with an offense that does enough to win games.  We will continue the brand of highly disciplined football to League One next season.

xG Expected vs Actual     xG Attacking Efficiency      xG Defensive Efficiency

Stats 1     Stats 2

Transfers - One big sale as we shipped attacking right-back Cameron Robertson 30G to Huddersfield for a club record 3.1 million pounds.

Newcomer and Player of the Year Reece Dukic 33A : A rock in the back line who started to get terrible low-ball offers from MLS clubs which he has a slight interest in but doesn't complain when I refuse to talk to the MLS clubs.  Already a mainstay on the USA U20 team and should be getting a senior side callup soon.

A good showing by our U18 team.  They slipped to 5th place after last year's runner-up finish.

Soufaine Dghoughi 25A given the lack of midfield options now has the inside track to become the first academy player with 400+ appearances.  Baitup 23D just didn't play this season now that better options have come into the club.  Gavin Allen 27I will join Dghoughi 25A and Baitup 23D in the 300+ appearance club next season.  Armando 27F will threaten Loft 26F's 70 goals by an academy player but makes most of his appearances now as a "super sub" to Austin Power 31G who is started to march up the goal scoring chart.

30107973_June12034SeniorInternationalAppearances-Goals.png.5fb270cc0ccfec1a1cb20632366c0f3f.png

Mutasa 31A has made a couple more appearances with the Zimbabwe National Team but we still have very few senior internationals at the club.

Now, we have a full list of 10 players who have made an U20 or U21 appearance for their nation but still only have three goalscorers.

Vikeologist's 23rd Folkestone Intake Report (and 19th Intake Review)

See the source image

I was worried from the preview that this would be a bad intake (possibly with a fantastic goalie that I’d never utilise), but actually this isn’t too bad.

20210401121054_1.thumb.jpg.bb5ed2fd0641580346af6aa2cd86409c.jpg

However it doesn’t have the one position I need which is a new left winger. I turned down a huge offer for my starter in that position this season because I don’t have a plan (or player) B.

Alan Bradley 23a – It was a toss up who to make my ‘a’, but Bradley appears on top when I sort by potential (according to my HoYD who has no potential spotting ability). He’s a bit short.

20210401121337_1.thumb.jpg.78fefcdc3ddf5a9e81a940a856092165.jpg

Graham Cattell 23b – A right winger, but alternatively I could use him as a right back. Unlikely to feature in the first team in either role soon, but who knows? Unflappable media handling, which maybe suggests a high pressure attribute.

YP19 Review

Shaun Clarke 19a – Talking of right wingers, Shaun is currently my 3rd choice in that role. He does get some sub appearances, and I probably should start regarding it as a 3 way battle and give him more starts. My coach with the highest JPP rates him more highly than consensus. These reviews can really focus the mind.

Andy Blackwell 19b – I’d assumed Blackwell was the ‘a’. He is a really good central defender who I sold because his contract was running out this summer and he didn’t want to re-up. It’s quite rare for me to lose players this way. I generally have my top players locked up for many seasons in advance, but Andy got up himself too early.

Russell Dalling 19c – Took over as starting goalie last season. By far our best goalie, and still improving, but I haven’t forgotten how horrible his first couple of appearances were, and when I watch matches I’m not always entirely convinced by him. No chance of my dropping him though.

Victor Suleiman 19d - Left back currently on loan. It could go either way, but apart from a couple of sub appearances, I’ve hardly noticed him.

Louis Heathcote 19e – I consider him my starter right winger, though I rotate a lot, but perhaps I should be giving Shaun Clarke 19a above more chances.

Adrian Brockway 19h – A striker who’s still with us, but probably should sell him if I can get anything for him, because I can’t see him becoming a starter for us.

Jason Bevan YP – remarkable because at the age of 20, he’s already stopped playing and become an unemployed Assistant Manager. Was never offered a playing contract by us anyway. Poor coaching stats, but he is a Model Citizen. Having only just spotted him as staff for this review, I’ve offered him a job as Assistant U18 Manager to replace a Perfectionist who is also fairly useless at coaching (albeit a lot better than Bevan).

(Interesting that he became a Model Citizen. He was my second lowest ranked player for potential at intake with 'Unambitious' personality and a determination of 16. It goes to show how misleading these initial labels can be. He did play football for a couple of years at Hereford, whose manager is an ex-coach of ours - with Model Citizen personality!)

New Farnborough Head of Youth Development

Danny Rose was a good HOYD but wanted to bring in someone who better fit my team personality and tactics.  Jake Court takes the job with a determined personality while wanting to play a passing game in either a 4-3-3 DM wide or 4-2-3-1 wide....my two preferred formations.

Belfast Celtic - Season 2033/34 Review

Table | Squad | Transfers | Finances

Much as last season, we finished 3rd and qualified for Europe again. We did not have to fight for it against Glentoran this time tough, as we were closer to the top 2 than them. So we are improving a lot, but we still need to save money for going to professional.

In the Irish Cup we beat Cliftonville, Glentoran, Institute and Crusaders before losing to Linfield in the final.

In the NIFL Cup we beat Bangor before losing to Annagh United in the 3rd round.

In the County Antrim Shield we beat Bangor and Ards before losing to Linfield in the semi final.

In Europe we played in the Europa Conference League and started in the 2nd qualifying round. We beat Sutjeska Nikšić of Montenegro and Gorica of Croatia before losing to Scots Dundee United in the 4th qualifying round.

Youth

I've started to question how real this preview is...

A bit better now, but seeing as my HoYD is a Perfectionist, I've started to question if he manages to transfer his personality to the youngsters.

Philip Lowry 34d is a really promising goalkeeper and will take over as first choice soon enough.
