The Champion of Champions(league) - Game Thread

Recommended Posts

Game Four

Jack Browne - Five games for the central midfielder but his worst performances yet, a red card saw him miss one of Porto's matches and they crashed out in the Group stages.

Mikael Scholer - Ten goals conceded in his five matches but he did manage a clean sheet, it could've been worse for Standard but not much as they went out bottom of the Group.

Charles Beams - Was very strong for Rangers contributing 1 goal and 1 assist in his 6 games. One of their top performers throughout the competition but couldn't do enough to get them past the first stage.

Des Tiny - No games for Slavia Prague and even with his help I doubt they'd have made it through.

Ihsaan Ahmed - Was absoloutely brilliant for Besiktas scoring 5 times in his 6 games, including 1 in each of the games against Barcelona. Two MoM's and an assist as well confirm him as the Turkish sides best player but his good form doesn't earn him the place he deserves in the next round.

Allan Juel Hansen - Another player who put on a good show, he played six times and came up with three goals, his quality was recognised with 2 MoM awards but they will do litttle to soften the blow as Fiorentina go out early.

Ivan Matkovic - Debrecen only scored 4 times this year and Matkovic was responsible for 3 of them. One in each of the games against Man Utd and 1 against Real Madrid showed he can do it against the big sides but unsurprisingly his side still go out.

Mr T - Only played 3 times for Olympiakos but played very well in those 3 games. He even came up with an assist but the Greek side are still going home.

William Hall - Was very good as ever for Salzburg but even his quality wasn't enough to see them through.

Richard Lipscombe - Didn't get a single game which is a shame because he's been on fire domestically.

Mario-Luigi vdB - Was nothing but average for Unirea, obviously it's dificult in a lowly team but even so he was quite bad.

Jan Klaas - Last years winner was in fine form for AZ, played 6 times and even scored against Bordeaux but his sparkling form couldn't see them through.

Tyler Burrows - Hardly played at all for Rubin even in the League, didn't play in Europe and they're out.

Fergy - Bayern gave him a go in 5 of their matches and he failed to impress in every single one of them, certainly contributed to the Germans early exit.

Santi Marquez - Was injured for 6 weeks and that may be why he only played a single game for Levski and was poor in that one outing.

Larence Lazewski Jr. - The American played all 8 games for Man Utd and scored twice, his 2nd goal came in the 2nd leg of thir thrilling 4-3 encounter with Atletico Madrid, it was the Spainish side that came out victorious.

AJ Kerr - Played 6 times in the Group Stages and conceded 6 goals but still kept two clean sheets, missed the knockout round with a broken ankle and myabe that's why Twente go out.

Super Lampard - Played very well in the Group Stages, scoring 3 times in his 6 games, all coming against Bayern. Things were looking good but a £22.5m move to Chelsea ended his hopes of Champions League glory.

Bruton Gaster - Didn't play for CSKA but got a move to Juventus in January, only played twice before they were knocked out but grabbed a goal in the 2nd leg against Barcelona.

Sam Fisher - Scored twice on matchday one and continued in good form from then on, he didn't add any goals to his tally but grabbed 2 assists and a MoM. Unfortunately Marseille only make it to the first knockout round.

Joeri Scheerlink - Only played twice in the Group Stages but scored a £17m move to AC Milan and blew his chances in the process.

Mattie Short - Missed the Group Stages with a broken ankle but returned for the first knockout round, he did well in both legs, even scoring in the 2nd but Lyon couldn't find a way past AC Milan.

V.W. Delight - Played 5 times and became much more of a creative force this season, only the one goals but 3 assists for Bordeaux. Real Madrid proved one step too far for the French side.

Patty Hitman - Was solid but unspectacular in his 6 games, he managed a goal in a 5-0 rout over Rubin in the Group stage but couldn't manage much else.

Kenco - Wolfsburg reached the 1/4 finals without him, after playing reasonably well in all 6 Group Games he left for Porto for a measly £1.8m, no matter though as he wouldn't have won anyway.

Lewis Davies - Was a permanent fixture in the Liverpool backline and played very well gaining himself an avg rating of 7.34 Even his talents couldn't prevent Liverpool going out to Real Madrid

Craig Hopper - Played 9 times this season and was solid at best, a highly entertaining two legs against Inter saw the Spainish side crash out.

Gunter Hess - Only played the solitary game but did fairly well in that one, coming up with an assist against Salzburg.

Fatboy - Was doing well at AC Milan, scoring once in his 3 games and performing to a high standard. Threw away a decent chance though when he made the move to Man City in January for £16m.

Whoopy Dee'e - Had his best season to date scoring twice and coming up with an assist in his 8 games. Unfortunate to miss out on another final appearance crashing out in the semi's.

Final - Barcelona v Inter

Joe Tompkins - Had a very good season in Spain, he played 10 times although 5 times were off the bench. He scored only once and that came in the Group Stages but was generally lively and came up with 3 assists over the season. Came very close to winning and even played in the final but came up just short.

Maz - So that can only mean we have a winner. And a very deserving one at that, 8 goals in 13 games including 3 in the 1/4 finals and some crucial goals in the Group Stages. Maz was absoloutely brilliant from start to finish and his place in this Champions League winning side is thoroughly deserved. He may have been surrounded by quality but there's no doubt Maz was one of the stars in a fantastic season for Inter.

Game Four Winner - Maz

Semi Finals

AC Milan v Man Utd

1st Leg

Kenco starts for the home side while Des Tiny is on the bench in what should be a fantastic game, the two clubs have met fairly often in this competition in recent years with varying results. It's a lively start to the game and Man Utd take an early lead, Giggs floats a free kick from deep into the box and Vidic wins the header, he powers it into the bottom corner to put the English side ahead. AC Milan fight back though and 35 minutes in Pato races away on the counter, he runs from all the way inside his half to the edge of the Utd box, skinning Park Ji Sung on his way. The Brazillian squares the ball to Huntelaar who can't miss and brings AC Milan level. They go in level at half time and when the second half begins it's Man Utd who're on top, pushing for that 2nd away goal but 72 minutes in John O'Shea gets caught sleeping and Pirlo's pass in behind finds Kenco who scores to put AC Milan in the lead. Just when it looks like Man Utd will have to go to Old Trafford behind Fletcher and Carrick combine to put Berbatov in and the Bulgarian slots it away in the 88th minute, Man Utd surely llook favourites now with 2 away goals heading into the 2nd leg.

Man Utd v AC Milan

2nd Leg

AC Milan know they need a big performance and once again Kenco is in the starting 11, Man utd are content with Des Tiny resuming his spot on the bench. Milan start well and but for the post would have an equaliser early on. Twenty four minutes in things go from bad to worse for the Italians as again Giggs and Vidic combine for the centre back to strike again, this time from a corner. Milan push on and create a string of chances but at the break it's 1-0. The second period begins in much the same way but with different results, 54 minute played and Gattuso puts a hopeful ball into the box, Pato gets between Evra and Vidic and is first to the ball before he calmly slots past van der Sar to equalise. One more goal in enough now for AC and they push hard for it, Man Utd bring on Des Tiny with 10 minutes to go to try and help cling onto their lead and they manage it, Man Utd progress to the final on away goals.

Barcelona v Bayern

1st Leg

Lawrence Lazewski and Sam Fisher both start this massive clash, the Barcelona man has been an ever present in the side but is yet to really impress while Fisher has been in fine form scoring and assisting twice already this season. It doesn't take long for their fortunes to switch though as 15 minutes in Sam Fisher is outjumped by Pique and the centre back nods in a goal from the corner to put Barcelona ahead. Fisher has a chance to redeem himself before half time, he gets a header at goal but he can't keep it down and Bayern go in trailing. They day gets even worse for Fisher in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half, first he picks up a knock and although he decides he can run it off within 5 minutes Barcelona double their advantage, Messi dribbles infield and slides a ball through to Ibrahimovic and the big Swede scores with ease. Bayern need to step it up but Barcelona are too strong, Lazewski brings it forward and plays it down the line for Ibrahimovic again, he crosses for Keita who is fouled and Ibrahimovic is left with the simple task of slotting away a penalty for 3-0.

Bayern v Barcelona

2nd Leg

Bayern have it all to do as once again both Lazewski Jr and Fisher start the game, it seems unlikely that Barcelona will give up 3 goals though. Sam Fisher has the chance to score just before the 20 minute mark, his shot on the angle is a tough one though and it's wide. The Germans still trail at half time and their task is only made harder when Martin Demichelis is sent off early in the second period, Lawrence Lazewski Jr sends in a cross for Ibrahimovic but the post denies him. Barcelona just keep the ball for the rest of the game, Bayern do their best but it was going to be tough with 11 men and with 10 it's almost impossible.

Final

Barcelona v Man Utd

Lazewski Jr and Des Tiny are both in the starting line ups for their respective sides as these two recent winners face off once again. It's a bright start from Utd, Mame Biram Diouf has two chances inside the opening 5 minutes and it's the English side who continue to press. Barcelon begin to find a foothold as the half wears on and Lazewski becomes more and more involved and even has a chance to score after half an hour but the offside flag denies him. Into stoppage time and Tiny fires a pass into the feet of Rooney, he squares it to Diouf who hits a perfect curler into the top corner to give Man Utd the lead. Barcelona look dumstruck by that goal but come out determined in the 2nd half, ten minutes in Messi comes down the left and drives in a low cross towards Lazewski, it looks like his moment has come at last but Michael Carrick slides in and diverts the ball into his own net to level things up and the American is robbed of his chance to become a hero. Des Tiny looks to help Man Utd back onto the front foot immediately with a pass into Park but the Korean wastes the chance. The 2nd half drags on without either side pushing too hard for fear of conceding and at 90 minutes it's 1-1. Des Tiny is replaced a short while into Extra Time and what a stroke of genius it turns out to be, in the very last minute of the game Vidic knocks a header down the Hargreaves who feeds it to Rooney and he once again picks out Diouf who hammers in his 2nd goal to become the most unlikely of heroes for Manchester Utd to win them and Des Tiny the Champions League.

Again fairly simple update but I've been real busy with work this week (damn the school holidays) Update on how the knockout stages played out coming soon.

EDIT: I thought we were long overdue some screenies so there you go.

Game Six

Players Eliminated in the First Knockout Round

Mattie Short - Transferred to Man Utd in January having already played for Porto and although the English club go through his chances of winning are zero.

Jack Browne - Had a fantastic season for Juventus but they crash out despite his efforts.

Kenco - Not his best season ever but still respectable enough from the winger.

Maz - Had a brilliant Group Stage for Sporting and was convinced to join AC Milan but his cup ties rule him out for his new club.

Fergy - Played only twice and played horribly in losses to Real Madrid.

Mikael Scholer - Left for Palermo and completely ruined any slim chance he had.

Lewis Davies - Had a very good season by all accounts but AC Milan couldn't match his individual efforts.

William Hall - Was good for Bayern and went out in a blaze of glory as his sides tie against Sevilla produced a 6-6 aggregate score.

Eliminated in Quarter Finals

Joe Tompkins - Played well enough for Liverpool but nothing spectacular despite their appearance in the 1/4 finals.

Ivan Matkovic - Another English side crash out with Matkovic in very good form, five goals for the Croatian in a very good season.

Joeri Scheerlinck - Did well to get Sevilla this far and played solidly throughout the campaign.

Mr T - Real Madrid crash out to their great rivals in Barcelona, Mr T was good when he played but unfortunately his side go home.

Eliminated in Semi Finals

Craig Hopper - Played plenty in the League but not in Europe which is a shame, Lyon might've reached the final with his help.

Tyler Burrows - Had trouble forcing his way into the first team but did ok when he got his chances, unfortunate to miss out on a final spot.

Final

Chelsea v Barcelona

So will we see DeS Tiny become the first player to win back to back games? Or will the man with the incredibly long name score his first victory?

Mario Luigi vdB - His chances were limited at Chelsea but he did very well when called upon and was rewarded with a final appearance, once again though Chelsea fall short at the very last minute and fail to win that elusive Champions League.

Which of course means -

Game Six Winner -

Des Tiny

The Romanian becomes the first player to score back to back wins of the competition and in doing so takes the lead with 2 wins to all the other winners 1 win. He wasn't always first choice at Barcelona but he played plenty and made the most of the opportunity.

Game Seven

Patty Hitman - Started the campaign really well with Marseille scoring twice on the opening day but from then on was less impressive and the French side go home at the first hurdle.

Des Tiny - Couldn't make it three in a row and his five games for Standard were pretty terrible, the Belgians not even managing a point.

Joe Tompkins - Scored Wolfsburgs first goal in the competition this season and went on to bag a total of three in his six games, an impressive but short campaign for the striker as they go home.

Gunter Hess - Probably didn't expect much from his SLavia Prague side and they duly delivered, Hess played 4 times but failed to make much of an impression.

Charles Beams - Always going to be dificult with Besiktas but Beams didn't do too badly, an assist and even a MoM over his six games but his form wasn't good enough to see them past the Group Stage.

Mr T - The centre back only played two games but he did come up with a goal in the final match to make what little contribution he made memorable.

Richard Lipscombe - Scored half of Debrecen's goals in the CL this year however they only scored 2 so nothing to write home about, he was one of their better performers but that's not saying much.

Kenco - Played only the one game for Olympiakos thanks to a broken leg and although he managed a 7.5 rating he won't get another chance as they go home early.

Jack Browne - A couple of niggling injuries meant he only played 4 times and was unable to inspire Salzburg beyond the first stage although they only miss out on goal difference.

Fergy - Played fairly well in his five games and his single goal earned Unirea a point against Dinamo, none of this was enough to see them finish anything other than bottom of the group.

Mattie Short - Played four times before injuring his hamstring and it was a shame because he was in great form, an assist and a MoM just go to show that with him 100% of the time Sevilla might have gone through.

Allan Juel Hansen - Has scored 7 times in 5 games domestically and is currently averaging an 8.7 rating. Unfortunately that means nothing to us and even less now Rubin are out.

Ihsaan Ahmed - Was uninspiring to say the least in his five games, he missed the final game with broken ribs which was probably a blessing in disguise for Atletico.

William Hall - Did very well considering his side finished last in the Group, played in all six games and was amongst Levski's top performers.

Sam Fisher - As always seems to be the case CSKA didn't register their star man for this first stage and once again they suffered, however he made the move to Man Utd in January and played well in his two games for them but they still go out in the first knockout round.

Jan Klaas - Played very well throughout the Group Stages for Man Utd but couldn't inspire them to victory over Inter over the two legs.

Whoopy Dee'e - Strong performances from the midfielder to see FC Twente this far, played all 8 games and even grabbed a goal but they can do no better than the first knock out round.

Tyler Burrows - Played plenty of league games but Lyon seem to prefer to Lloris in Europe, turns out it might not have been the best decision as they're now out.

Mario-Luigi vdB - Had been solid for AZ scoring just once in his six Group Stage matches, moved to Celtic in January which ended his chances of winning although they were never high with AZ anyway.

Super Lampard - Played very well in his five games and grabbed a goal along the way, Bayern might've made it through but for three red cards in their 2nd leg against Sporting.

Mikael Scholer - Quickly became first choice at AC Milan and managed 3 clean sheets in his 8 games only conceding 9 along the way, 4 of those coming in the knockout round against Real Madrid.

Maz - Six games, two goals, 4 asssists, 3 MoM's and an avg rating of 7.97 for the Group Stages are impressive stats to say the least. Man Utd certainly thought so and snatched him away from Porto at the first chance.

Fatboy - Was strong for Rangers in his eight games, the fact they got past the Group Stage is quite an achievement in itself and his 4 assists no doubt helped them in their relative success, Chelsea send them home in the end.

Craig Hopper - Has done well to guide Sporting to the quarter finals, just the one goal in his 9 appearances but by all accounts a very good season for the centre midfielder.

Joeri Scheerlinck - Was hardly used by Juventus although he did play all six Group Stage games, Barcelona saw something though and paid £22m for his services.

Ivan Matkovic - Scored 3 goals in his 9 games for Barcelona and was having a very good season in Europe. He even won MoM in their 2nd leg with Inter which ended in a defeat on penalties.

Lewis Davies - Was in sparkling form all season for Bordeaux and inspired them to the 1/4 finals, no goals but plenty of good performnaces across his 10 games.

V.W. Delight - Played 4 times for Real Madrid and scored a single goal, a poor season by his standards.

Santi Marquez - Had been a real star for Dinamo domestically and Real Madrid noticed his talent, after his move in January he played 6 times in the CL performing very well out on the left wing and helping his new side to the semi finals.

Lawrence Lazewski Jr - Has been nothing short of sensational for Liverpool. In his 12 games he has scored 9 goals, racking up 2 MoM's and an avg rating of 7.57. Slavia Prague must've been sick of him after their two group stage encounters where the American scored 5 goals against them. He also grabbed 3 goals across two legs against Juventus and is the competitions joint top scorer.

Final - Chelsea v Inter

AJ Kerr - Missed the final through injury but it's probably safe to say he wouldn't have played. Only 2 appearances in Europe all season but still came very close to winning.

Game Seven Winner - Bruton Gaster

Had a very good season with Chelsea scoring 3 times, his most recent came in the semi final 2nd leg when they destroyed Liverpool 4-0. He was a ever present in the Chelsea side and his performances throughout the season more than merit a Champions League medal and he's got just that.
