Teams News

Chile have two key players suspended - playmaker Matias Fernandez and combative midfielder Carlos Carmona. Jorge Valdivia is an obvious replacement for Fernandez, while Rodrigo Millar may come in for Carmona after recovering from a calf strain.

Spain forward David Villa has avoided a retrospective ban for slapping Honduran Emilio Izaguirre. He will again be partnered by Fernando Torres, while midfielder Andres Iniesta has recovered from the minor leg injury that prompted him to sit out the win over Honduras.

Preview

A Spanish imposition has dogged Chile since being conquered five centuries ago, but a first win against Spain would probably send the European champions home.

With Italy and France having already exited, Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque readily concedes that past triumphs have no bearing on future success - although Spain have never lost to Chile, they had not been beaten by Switzerland either before this World Cup.

Players to watch

David Villa v Claudio Bravo

The Spanish striker hit both his side’s goals against Los Catrachos, and could have had a hat-trick had he not hit the woodwork and also shot wide from the penalty spot. On top of his game against the central Americans, El Guaje will be looking to add to his tournament goal tally at the Loftus Versfeld, although to do that he will need to find a way past Claudio Bravo in the Chile goal.

The Real Sociedad custodian has yet to be beaten in South Africa and is in buoyant mood after his club colleagues regained their place in the Spanish top flight, where next season he will come up against Villa, who signed for Barcelona before the world finals began.

Teams News

Switzerland's chief creator, Tranquillo Barnetta, is expected to start in place of the suspended Valon Behrami, having been surprisingly left out against Chile. Philippe Senderos is still sidelined with the ankle injury he suffered in the opening match.

Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda could recall all-time leading scorer Carlos Pavon for a game Honduras need to win to have a chance of qualifying. Georgie Welcome is another alternative to partner Inter Milan striker David Suazo.

Preview

Switzerland and Honduras go into Friday’s final Group H fixture with the same objective: both need a win to stand a chance of progressing. The central Americans are bottom of the section with no points so far, but can still make the Round of 16 if they beat the Swiss, Spain lose to Chile, and the requisite number of goals are scored and conceded to nose the Hondurans in front of the Spanish on goal difference.

Switzerland know even more precisely what they need. A victory over the Hondurans by two clear goals would see them into the last sixteen, regardless of the outcome between the European champions and the South Americans. A draw might yet be enough for the Swiss, should Spain lose for the second time at the finals. However, relying on that outcome may be foolhardy.

Players to watch

Wilson Palacios v Gokhan Inler

The players fill the same midfield role for their respective teams, snuffing out dangerous moves in the holding position, and then launching attacks of their own with intelligent passing from deep. Both have made the breakthrough in leading European leagues, Palacios in England with Tottenham Hotspur, and Inler in Italy with Udinese. Both wear the number eight for their countries, each is the tireless provider for his team, and both are aged 25. With most pundits anticipating an open game and plenty of open space, the contribution made by the pair will be even more significant than normal, both in guarding the area in front of the back four and setting team-mates free for attacks down the flanks.

Chile v Spain has the potential to be a cracking game. Hope Chile don't abandon their attacking approach and go for a draw. Been my favourite team to watch so far and deserve to have scored more goals.

With them being up against a bigger side are they likely to continue with a 3313? Don't know how they played in qualifying when up against Brazil or the Argies.

Plenty can still happen today in terms of permutations of results to decide who goes through.

Group as it stands:

               W D L GF GA GD PTS
Chile 2 0 0 2 0 2 6
Spain 1 0 1 2 1 1 3
Switzerland 1 0 1 1 1 0 3
Honduras 0 0 2 0 3 -3 0

But, a victory by 2 or more goals for Switzerland will be enough to see them through. Then it depends on the result in the other game to decide whom they advance with and in which position.

I can see the Swiss beating Honduras by two goals, which means either Chile or Spain would be out. Nothing against the Swiss, but that would be a pity. Then again, Spain going out would be the biggest sensation of the tournament, even bigger than Italy going out, which appeals to my sensationalist side :D

Hoping for a Spain/Brazil 2nd round please

This, also hoping for extra time + penalties, the more tiring they are the better, just in case we make it to the QF and face them.

How will Chile line up?

FIFA.com has it as a 4-3-3, is that right?

Isla-----Medel-----Ponce-----Jara

----Vidal---Estrada---Gonzalez---

--Sanchez--Valdivia--Beausejour--

they won't change their formation. same as the last 2 games.

Be prepared for a Refereeing Masterclass in the distribution of cards for not much in the Chile game tonight - this Mexican fella is a loose cannon to say the least - highly unpredictable and deeply suspect.

His World Cup record of cards in a single game so far is 9 yellow and 2 red in the Ivory Coast vs. Serbia match in 2006.

Probably the worst appointment that could have been made for a game of this importance

I still remember him from England's opening 2006 match. Possibly the worst refereeing performance ever, gave fouls against Crouch every time he went up for a header. I usually can't remember who Man Utd's ref was the day after the game but his performance has stuck in my mind for four years.
