Even though we started poorly, we managed to pick some points here and there throughout the season and we were never really in danger of relegation. Our main problem this season was our defense, and our lack defensive control. We let in way to many easy goals, and that led to many lost points. The squad is way too big at the moment, but that's due to many of the players I inherited were to poor to play much, but most of them will be gone as soon as their contract expire. Financially we are losing money, and losing a lot. A couple of the players have already complained about the financial state of the club, at the same time the club have stopped paying out bonuses to players. We lost more than £400k this season, and I can't really see this changing a lot next season, so I'm not sure how this will progress, but we'll see... Both the cups was failures. In the FA Cup we lost in the 2nd qualifying round to Poole. The FA Trophy wasn't much better as we lost to Dartford in the 3rd qualifying round. The best players this season was striker, captain and top scorer Ben Pattie, left back and free kick specialist Sam Beale and attacking midfielder and creative force Wilfred Gnahore. Finishing 4th instead of 6th may seem like a small step, but I finally found some consistency with a simple 4-4-2 and the 14 extra points compared to last season ain't nothing to sneeze at. We aren't always pretty, but wrestling control over games feels a lot better! As for the playoff? Well, we certainly tried! It wasn't exactly the cleanest or quietest lead-up in the first place, but gee: 17 goals, 16 yellows, 1 sending-off, a stoppage time equalizer, extra time, and a player scoring 4 goals in one match later... We're out. Bath is, coincidentally, also the team that ended our FA Trophy run last year, and considering they went and lost to Dulwich Hamlet in the final I don't think we've seen the last of each other yet! Finances | Transfers | Stadium Expansion Time to comply with league regulations. We are, of course, still hemorrhaging money without this extra expense, so I'm wary of what it will mean long-term. I've already let the highest-earning players go so it's sort of out of my hands now. Aim for next season: Kick and punch ourselves into the playoffs again. Kaiserwatman Posted October 24, 2016 Share Posted October 24, 2016 Stafford Rangers Half Season Report 17-18 Not Fantastic but OK - Books are not so bad which is the main thing in my save - yes I am losing some money but I can make that back and turn it green before the year is out. Overall I have stuck to obtaining Midlands based players to add to the squad. My new keeper was ex Baggies , striker ex Villa . centre half ex Crewe who are a parent though holder I will ignore them for players - One signing was from Peterborough which is a bit of a trek in my midlands based operation but he has proved useful . I won't be going up but I don't think I will be going down either on the takings of the first half of the season. Currently the books are like this which I am working on and the table is like this which I'll accept for now - Might sound like Wenger but Books will come before football performances in this quest. Counting the days until this somehow falls apart, but enjoying the ride for now! Pleased with the board as well who've kept injecting funds, bringing us closer to black than we've been in years. I think defenders are bad at tracking back and goalkeepers move very slowly side-to-side. It may just be this low tier of football, but the long ball over the top seems lethal even with just 1-2 players participating in the attack/counter. The receiver is often not closed down well and a simple squared low pass/cross to a teammate rushing the opposite post eludes most keepers. Even if it turns into a one-on-one, the conversion rate seems high. Without getting too much into the nitty-gritty, I try to keep things tight with an all-defensive back four and two tenacious CMs, then transition fast and direct after playing hard/dirty. Profile | Squad | Tactic | Table | Finances Season Review I have to say that this was a season of surprises, we won matches that we shouldn't have won and lost matches that we shouldn't have lost. First off there were 2 particular players that deserve my recognition as they were the ones that made the most impact in all the games. Best of the season: Avoiding relegation. Most completed passes Best avg possession Malakai with 43 key passes and our top goal scorer with 15 goals. Malakai (ST): I first asked for his loan as I had planned to make him a right winger. I wanted someone who could run past the defenders and cross. Thinking that I had now three right midfielders so I was thinking to send my third option Wilson Carvalho to the reserves. What was it that made him special? He was a beast in counter attacks, with his flairs and in the DPLForward he could get the ball from the midfield to the goal really fast and dribbling defenders even scoring it himself. Or when he didnt have the ball he arrived later in the area to put it in. 15 goals and 7 assists. As I said in the start of the season Quote This guy came from Chelsea. Hes not a very good player but hes fast, he has avg flair and work rate so I want him in order run all the way to the end From zero to heroe. Wilson Carvahlo(Winger): So I was just about to send him to the reserves when I noticed he had a good Long shots attribute. I decided to make him a BBM. Which if you check his stats made him get 10 goals. He would always arrive late and shoot from sight. Lots of screamers. Dissapointments of the season: Ian Simpemba: He made too many mistakes with simple passing that cost us matches or points. I don't think he will be staying for the next season. Matches against the bottom three: Somehow we ended up losing points against them or losing. While playing against the top three we ended up tieing or winning. Cups Since this was my first season and my squad wasnt the best one I throwed the cups away. I was concentrated on getting to mid table. Which I kinda feel we did but If I am honest were the lowest of the mid table. League: The only moment we felt that we were fighting relegation was in the first three matches. I tried a possession tactic but failed miserably and lost games through defenders errors. I had to change to a counter mentality which did wonders for us. MadCatPT Posted October 24, 2016 Share Posted October 24, 2016 Blyth Spartans - 2017/2018 - Vanarama National League North League Table | Finances | Transfers | End of Season Awards | Season Review | Youth Candidates | Injuries Summary: After sizing up the squad, normal period of contract renewals and tactic planning. No remarkable youth, only one two star of potential. The squad was good, no holes, just some cover issues. The tactics I prepared was a 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 4-2-3-1. The 4-5-1 with a flat 5, in a counter mentality was my main tactic for the season, I was able to achieve a 11th place. The beginning of the season was very good, top defence of the league but a half-table attack. Soon the results started getting more inconsistent and we started getting down the table, we made a nice run on the FA Cup, getting to the 3rd round, then we met QPR and we're trashed, it stated a big period of losses that made me get just 6 point above relegation, after it we slowly started recovering, and ended the season on a high note even with injuries mounting forcing one of the young players to start some games. Future by position: GK: Ross Dalton is the undisputed owner of the goal, after him not much to speak about, still has room to improve. FB R: 2 good players with some room to improve, Alex Nicholson was the starter because Andrew Cartwright started the season with a long term injury, after he returned he was the starter. FB L: Michael Liddle was the undisputed starter all season, there are other players that can cover, but must are best used in other positions. D C: Nathan Buddle is very good, Emmanuel Kanteh is good and still has a lot of room to grow. Have to keep them as long as I can, the two backups are a sharp drop from these two. M R: Daniel Emmerton was the starter, Reuben Dass covered for him on injuries. M L: Sean Whelan was the starter until a long term injury, Reuben Dass covered and will start next year until Sean Whelan returns. M C: Starters where Jarret Rivers and Matty Pattinson, they have tendency to pick some injuries, so lots of time for the backups, Michael Richardson was the main next man up. DLP : Stephen Turnbull is the starter, Jarret Rivers had to replace him many times due to injury and yellow cards, the youngster Michael Montgomery 17b had to start the last six games of the season, he was just decent, but he still needs development. DLF: Dan Maguire started and was able to score some goals, but his small stature (1,73m) made him limited, and soon the adversaries started mark him out of the game, so even with a contract dispute Louis Robles started playing, first without success but then he exploded, and ended the top goalscorer with 15 goals. Youth: Michael Montgomery 17b has proven he can be a backup that is not a liability, so he will get some games as my midfielders are prone to inuries, hope he can keep improving and play better next season. Chris Roberts 17a has a lot of promise, he has gotten some games from the bench, and when Louis Robles was injured, he played the final two games and was able to get his first goal. Blew all my budget on a striker from the trialist pre-season games who's turned out to be a goal machine, propelling me to the top4 of the table for most of the season, alongside a young AMC i signed on loan from League2. Currently sitting 2nd place with one game to go, with the chance to win the league if i win by a few goals, but i doubt i'll manage it in the end. Been really lucky with injuries being completely non-existent while a few other teams were totally decimated by them, and had seven easy games where i was playing against ten or fewer men for large spells, so i think i've rode my luck a fair bit this season. Sadly, my form has slipped a lot in the back end of the season so i'm not confident of gaining promotion if i only finish in the play-off spots. Kaiserwatman Posted October 24, 2016 Share Posted October 24, 2016 Stafford Rangers Season Report 17-18 Finances League Overall a successful season where i was never really ever in danger of the drop though the season was a true model of inconsistancy as Stafford regulary upset the big boys before getting hammered by the sides down at the foot of the table. The defence is certainly the problem with the concession of 79 goals which was joint worst within the division so this will need to be strengthened during the summer break . Cup runs were pretty short and sweet going out to Vanarama Premier sides Barrow and Forest Green in the early rounds. Finances i thought were in check round Christmas but they slowly got worse to the point where it gets sort of worrying and will need to be monitored as the squad is rebuilt due to player departures and retirements. Whilst i dont think i will go up next season either the main focus will be rebuilding the side with the defense been the main focus and moving towards the top 10 Player of the season was easily on by Daniel Jarvis - The ex Peterborough youth held the midfield together nicely and popped up with a couple of crucial goals in tight games. I had my best success ever in this challenge with that team (back in FM2015). Got to the EPL (as of now have 5 matches left in the...31/32 season??? sitting 3rd, made Quarter finals of Champions league as well before getting knocked out. No surprise that my best success also came with my best ever Newgen (Robyn Watson came through my youth setup in my first year in charge --- managed 500 senior goals for the club --- and somehow I managed to keep my hands on him for the whole time). Welsh Wizard Posted October 25, 2016 Share Posted October 25, 2016 Manager Profile - Club Info - Facilities Really wanted Merthyr Town but after countless reloads I had to get started so went with Kettering Town. They have decent facilities for the level and are not in a bad financial state(give us a few months). The squad needs more depth and quality to achieve anything more than a bottom half finish so I have appointed Chris Brindley and Lee Hendrie as Assistant Manager and Chief Scout respectively to mainly help with that. The plan was to build a team around Rene Howe but he wants to leave for a better team and is unhappy at the moment so more than likely there will be the usual major turnover of players as I start from scratch. Auger in particular was terrible for me, Gnahore was alright. Heh, well, Gnahore was great and are still great. Though he was with the club before I took over. Auger was, well, the best right back I could get, and he did ok. I have gotten a better one this season, so Auger is only a decent backup on a non-contract. Toby Stevenson another new signing, played a key part in us doing so well this season. Rossi Jarvis our most experienced player, doesn't look the best but he was key this season. Harvey Hodd same as Jarvis, a key player but with his contraxt running out he will be released. Jake Reed nothing needs to be said tbf. Luckily, I did it just before the board decided to cut our wage budget in half. This means I'm well above the new budget and it stayed that way for the most of the season. We are in a right financial mess, but we are at least not losing as much as we did last season. On the pitch it went better though. We managed to win the first 4 matches, and kept at the top part of the table for the most of the season. Most matches we did well, but we have some, to me, quite unexplainable dips in form along the way. Going into the last few matches we were just inside the playoff spots, with a shot at winning it. We fought our best, and in the end we finished in 4th place and getting a playoff spot. In the playoff semi final we got drawn against Maidstone United. A 1-0 win at home was followed up by a 2-2 draw away to show us to the final. Our final hurdle was Dulwich Hamlet. With one win and one loss to them in the season everything was possible. It turned out to be a hard fought match, and even though we had the majority of the ball Dulwich Hamlet had the biggest chances to win it. When none of us managed to find the net, it all came down to penalties. We kept our cool as we slotted in ours, while they failed to score, leaving us promoted! We won it on pens, and got promoted to the Vanarama National. In the FA Cup we got past Wingate & Finchley, Enfield Town, and Bognor Regis before losing to League 1 outfit Shrewsbury Town in the 1st round. The FA Trophy went even better as we beat Bowers, Hemel Hempstead Town, Salford, Dartford and Darlington 1883 before losing to Forest Green Rovers in the semi final. The best players this season was attacking right back and crosser extraordiaire Josh Siafa, left winger and point provider Mitchell Pinnock and attacking midfielder and creative driving force Wilfred Gnahore. The first 5 games of the season were a see-saw of emotions. Opening day victory built up the confidence of this skeptical manager. Many different results followed, mainly losses and draws, but come the last 8 games of 2017, and with some tactical modifications, things are looking on the up. Been playing Anti-Football tactics with my 4-3DM-3. Essentially a 7 man back line, playing Route One, Counter Attacking football. It has worked out great, we are 3rd in the League stats wise, for completed crosses, with my 2 Inside Forwards supplying Joey 'Hitman' Johnson up-front. With the second half of the season to follow, we are 17th in the National South, I am hoping to keep the boys of the New Windmill Ground in the National South and build on the young squad I have assembled for next season. Ledleyking Posted October 25, 2016 Share Posted October 25, 2016 Highlights of first season - Wingate & Finchley - 2017/2018 Final Table Squad Transfers Finances A very exiting 1st season with a few downs and many ups. Started relatively good winning the first few matches before going into a slump in mid table. Changed tactics around half way through the season from 4-4-2 to an uncoventional 2-3-2-1-2 formation. Got a few free transfers and loans in to support the new formation and went much more stable for the remainder of the season winning most matches and only loosing a few. Before the last game of the season we were in 2nd position needing a win and for Boreham wood NOT to win. Won 2-1 at home to Gosport and had a few nervy moments as Boreham equalised 3 minutes before time and pressed for a winner. It all ended good and we will be playing in the Vanarama National next season. Off to some deserved holiday now for the players and for the manager to set a team for next season. I expect to get rid of most of the deadwood and try to grap some good freebees. Will continue with the winning tactic and see where it takes me next season. The insane early-season form obviously couldn't last, but damn; I would never have guessed we'd finish with a mere 3 losses. I'll take my share of credit for the new tactic - be it not the most refined one - but much of this success came thanks to one Max Ryan. I wanted a big man up front and found him at 17th-placed Whitehawk. Scoring 15 and being the only player in their squad with an average rating over 7.0 certainly seemed promising, but he's truly outdone himself for us. Had to make him top earner with a few promises attached, but I like to think promotion was worth it! Tom Phipp no doubt deserves a mention as well, banging in 19 from midfield. The cup runs were forgettable bar a £70K FA Cup payout for hosting Yeovil. Nothing too impressive, but along with repeated cash injections it's finally put our finances in decent order. The projections are still dour, but one thing at a time... Aim for next season: Stay up. At any cost. Going of the rules mainly the following bits I think it is fine. However we lost both and Maidenhead won the division. We however first overcame Dartford then beat St Albans on penalties in the final to clinch promotion. FA Cup: A decent run to the 1st round ended by League One Yeovil. FA Trophy: A reasonable run ended by National League side Eastleigh the eventual winners. Key players: Yiannis Constantinou: 30 goals in the season including 24 in the league - couldn't have got promoted without him Tom Derry: was the support for Yiannis until picking up an injury near the end Jack Edwards: strong presence in midfield Conor Hubble: another midfield leader David Fitzpatrick: great winger Surprisingly we're getting a new stadium already, assuming because the current one isn't the greatest. oohlala111 Posted October 26, 2016 Share Posted October 26, 2016 And so it begins! I am appointed as manager of Dulwich Hamlet as I begin my journey to the very top. The media have predicted us to come 5th which is not bad for a newly promoted side; hopefully we can live up to expectations. The board expect me to (at least) reach the play-offs in the league, get to the FA Cup 1st round and advance to the FA Trophy 2nd round. I think they're being a little bit harsh but we'll take it one step at a time. I am personally looking to finish mid-table with a couple of half-decent cup runs and anything more than that would be great. I will post some screenshots below of my manager profile, key players and anything else I see fitting. I will try and post updates every couple of days with the updated league table on each new post. oohlala111 Posted October 26, 2016 Share Posted October 26, 2016 I've just suffered my heaviest ever defeat in FM. In the most shocking way. The screenshot wouldn't upload so let me explain. We had no GKs (although I've signed one on loan now) so we had to put an outfield player in goal. Also, our CAM (who wasn't really a CAM either) was recovering from injury and had 31% energy by FT. Because of this, I expected to have a tough time vs Dulwich Hamlet U23s. What I wasn't expecting is to concede in the 2nd minute, before conceding another before HT. I was angry with my team and it got worse. 3-0. 4-0. 5-0. I was raging by now- wanting to smash my computer in. I almost did soon after as the 6th goal crossed the line into the back of the net. 4 goals conceded in the 2nd half. I signed far too many donkeys on part time deals at the beginning of the season that were hogging the wage bill once vastly better players joined the club. Ended up focusing on transfers rather than the tactics and I was only just hovering above relegation zone by Christmas. Hopefully my new attempt will get off to a better start. It's the first time I try to play so deep into the Lower Leagues and things are going better than expected. I've played most games with a 4-4-2 Counter, but after some discussions in a thread I opened about LLM tactics, I decided to build a tactic closer to my favourite style of play. We are doing good in the league, having a +8 from the relegation zone and a -3 from the playoff spots. We caused many upsets so far but we are leaking points against weak sides. (the side effect of counter tactics) Overall Competitions (December 2016) Here you can see my new tactic. Played 2 matches with it so far against weaker teams and I won both of them, playing decent football, with nice movements and pretty good positioning for the level of the League at least. Assymetric 4-1-3-2 (Inspired by noikee, Ozil to Arsenal, Cleon, dafuge, herne79 and Jambo98) For the past month I was reading their approaches, their views on mentalities, team shape, roles, etc. They changed the way I see FM tactics and I thank them for that. Next update will be in the end of the season. Our player of the year so far is someone who was just a backup option, but he delivered day in-day out, so he won his place in the starting lineup.
