Brazil's squad will be announced on Wednesday, it will be interesting to see if there will be any surprises like Miranda, Filipe or Diego Alves.

Miranda looks like the most likely of those while Diego Alves the least likely one as the other goalies (bar Júlio César) are good too.

Brazil's Final 23 or preliminary? Exciting times, love it when the squads start getting announced!

The final 23-player squad.

The full 30-player list won't be announced by Scolari although either FIFA or Brazil's FA site will probably announce it too at some point.

Nigeria doesn't look quite as scary as they have in past World Cups.
Africa's best hope of progressing far imo. Will be between them and Bosnia to get that 2nd place in the group and in all fairness, they've actually got quite a decent squad (or at the very least a good starting XI)
Link to post

Lack of Ideye is a bit odd but otherwise it's a good squad. Actually think all of the African sides have a chance to get out of their groups

Cameroon are probably the weakest in their group, but Croatia and Mexico haven't had particularly good recent fortunes

Ivory Coast are arguably the strongest in their group along with Colombia, don't particlarly rate Greece and think Japan will come up just short, also think that the Ivory Coast match up particularly well against Japan

As fm_94 says it'll be between Nigeria and Bosnia for second in Group F, but I'd favour Nigeria, also think that they could get something from Argentina, though that's more to do with the potential unpredictability of Argentina than anything else

Ghana seem to have the number of USA in World Cups, will probably get beaten by Germany and then it depends on which Portugal turns up, certainly think Ghana could beat them though

Algeria are probably the weakest in their group and have the least chance of getting through on paper, but at the same time none of their group are exactly powerhouses, and I think Belgium have a decent chance of bombing out of the group

Fully expect all 5 to go out straight away now...

worst Brazil squad I have ever seen, that is ****ing awful, my word. Jo, Julio Cesar? :D That's just two of many I could laugh at.

The 2010 one was worse than this one, although more experienced.

It's a squad that's going to go deep, though. Solid group of players, they've played together (mostly) for the past two years or so, home advantage, good draw. They'll take some beating.

Fred, Maxwell and possibly Ramires aside, I'd have gone for something similar.

Who would you have called up instead of Fred?

Lucas Moura. But the more I think about it, I'd have taken Diego Alves as well. I don't rate Hulk either but it's not as if Brazil is blessed with top quality wingers ATM.

Fred is a typical striker, very different from Lucas Moura.

Lucas Moura, despite all hype, has often looked pretty clueless at the national team.

wasn't Fred not the top scorer in last year's Confederations Cup?

not seen much of Brazilian football recently but surely that's enough to get a place in the team

Would have Miranda and Filipe Luís in the squad instead of Maxwell and Henrique/Dante, and I'm not just saying that to annoy Astafjevs. Coutinho in for Bernand too, and Ramires out even if it means only picking 22 players (can't think of another midfielder, I'm sure there are a lot of options).

Edit: Oh and maybe Maicon out too.

wonder what kind of 2nd string squad Brazil could put together

Diego Alves

Rafinha, Alex?, Miranda, F Luis

Lucas, Fernando

Lucas M, Ronaldinho, Coutinho

uh, Pato? Jonas?

Dedé instead of Alex in my opinion.

Sandro and Lucas Leiva as the defensive midfielders.

Ronaldinho not good enough for a second string either nowadays, better have Everton Ribeiro there.

Forwards is more complicated, Alan Kardec is a better striker at the moment than Pato though.

Don't think Lucas Leiva is up to it to be honest. At the minute at least, he looks a long way away from his pre-injury form.

Not like Brazil have too many options though.

Unless you choose very different, less defensive-like players. Lucas Leiva at least can play in different roles (more defensive, more attack-minded).

I know, I guess I'd have Neymar and Jo as central strikers...tbh I don't know, not enough options as I'd like!

I would 100% have taken Coutinho though

Brazil are at a bit of a disadvantage strikers wise because I'm sure Diego Costa would have been the No1 striker

well if he didn't decide he wanted to play for Spain, could have been a huge threat in Brazil for the hosts

yeah I should clarify, when I say awful I mean compared to Brazil sides I grew up watching. It's still pretty good and definitely better than England's squad.

Diego Costa didn't do well when he did play for Brazil (vs Italy and Russia) though. I think he also feels far more comfortable playing for Spain, in Brazil he is relatively unknown and thus would get more criticism.

Brazil not get the Champions League or La Liga on TV?

would have thought Costa was a bit well known now considering his exploits for Atletico and the potential of a move to Chelsea

You have to understand that in Brazil we don't see 'Spain', 'England', we just see 'Europe'.

And so players that play for big European clubs are favored over those who don't, such as Miranda, Filipe and Diego Alves.

By the time those were finally noticed, it was too late.

Given how youth development works in Brazil nowadays (we produce very few good fullbacks, attacking midfielders and strikers), I'll be surprised if Brazil has any time soon a team as good as some Brazil had in the past.

Henrique makes no sense.

But he won't play at all so I guess it doesn't really matter.

He makes all sense as:

1) He is versatile

2) Scolari knows him well as they worked together at Palmeiras.
