Really good idea tbh. SI could fine tune these types of models on real press conference transcripts to make the press conferencesmuch better. No idea if SI have a data science team though. If you do or youre looking to have one then hire me please as I would very much enjoy brining better AI (non-match) to the game and Im an experienced data scientist lol.

So I was playing with the chat AI and we had a nice discussion about computer football simulation games.  It’s not a program you run, you just type or talk into phone or computer.  
 

Honestly, this is fantastic advice and recommendation.

The option to add free text is already in game; it's possible SI have knowledge of how many people choose to use it.

you typically don't need a powerful computer to run a production model. Training yes, output requires much less power. Its much like learning something yourself for the first time and then mastering the skill. It takes much less effort.

To me these just seem like, at best, they remove the need for SI to personally write the articles that appear.  That could lead to not seeing the same phrases and sentences over and over again, but it's not exactly going to lead to particularly interesting ones.  They seem no more human than the stilted FM ones, and variety doesn't really affect that.  Models can improve to change that, but I don't think it necessarily adds much as things stand.

So I was playing around trying to test ChatGPT’s wits.  

I looked at my striker and told it some of his best and worst attributes, then read all the pros and cons on the scouting report.  Finally, I told it to analyze all the information, create a scouting report, and advise me on his best role as a striker:

Using it in Football Manager would be harmless fun, but I can see the potential vulnerability to misinformation being input. My initial thought is that it seems to be a talking Wikipedia, and that's held up as a reasonably reliable medium.

ChatGPT3's ability to provide generic paragraphs which have nothing to do with actually playing the game is impressive but not at all useful for understanding the game, as opposed to generic football concepts that have been written about a lot.

I would actually like a descriptive scout report like this in game with also the pros and cons as we have now. If I had this there will be no need to even look at attributes because it's detailed enough to give you an overall picture of the player in question

Correct, it doesn’t have game data.  What I’m considering is what if it DID.  
 

For example, a couple of posts up I read to it the name of a playe (Bryan Rochez), his relevant attributes, and his scouting report, then asked what his best role would be based on that information.  It gave a correct and excellent answer.

 

 

So, playing around, I followed up with a few more questions after having provided ChatGPT the relevant information.

furthermore, to make it a bit more fun, after providing the relevant information about removal of the striker, tell it to interview me during a press conference about why I substituted him.  It will asking questions, follow up questions,

I can argue back and forth with it about Bryan Rochez in my save.  If it can’t respond to one of my arguments without certain info, ask it what info it needs. It tells me, I provide it and then continue the argument about why I substituted him.  I can tell it to have a negative view of my decision, and the questions will be harsher.  Tell it to ask questions the way Shakespeare would and it does.  

give it the info about another player and ask who would make a better advanced forward and why and it tells you.  Give it other variables or more info and sometimes it changes its mind.

Way way beyond something like Siri with Wikipedia.  Revolutionary.

Sure, if you already know the answer and write it down, it will rewrite it with more words. But I don't see that as a learning aid :D   Or it saying "I am sorry, but I do not have information about specific soccer games".

Same with the scout report. It can summarise the stuff that's already there (less sophisticated AI has been summarising texts for years), unless you don't provide it with all the information in which case it apologises for not being able to help. Which is a pity, because I kind of hoped to get a Shakespearean description of my striker who is a fairly consistent performer with a fair amount of pace and a balanced and normal personality, but this wasn't enough information for ChatGPT to try it.

Same with basically any non-generic tactical question like ones asked on these forums...

Yeah, I'm really struggling to see what is so revolutionary or even useful about this when purely relating to FM.  It's cool tech.  Obviously.  And it's probably the tip of what's possible but at this stage it doesn't seem particularly interesting in an FM sense.  The company I work for is taking Google Street View data and uses AI models to take those photos and determine all kinds of property data about what it sees.  That's a clear business case that's going to add a huge amount of value.  This?  I'm yet to see anything that would.  

I'd far rather they went after the glaring AI problems the game has rather than chase cool shiny tech before it had time to find a clear case.

It can be used to replace repetitive text strings, however whether this is something thats actually useful is another question. I personally don't think it would be.

With significantly more development time it could be used to have conversations with the media and your players with free text input from the user. However I don't think this would be fun.

It would likely become just as tedious as the multiple choice interactions we have now. Difference would be instead of always clicking the same answer, you'd be making sure to always include the right keywords to get the in-game effect you want.

so another test to see what it can do with data from the game.

I told ChatGPT I am a football manager and he is my assistant manager.  I have an upcoming match against the first place team. I have two strikers and I need to name one as starter and one to sit on the bench. I need to make two decisions. First I need to decide which player I should name the starter and why.  Second, I need to decide which specific role I should use him in and why.  Please write a report answering these two questions for me. Good luck.

Then I told it, the first player is named blah blah blah, his tactical attributes, on a scale of 1 to 20 with 1 being worse and 20 being best, are (just reading off the screen) 5 for crossing 12 for dribbling 14 for finishing 12 for first touch 14 for heading 8 for long shots etc., then read all the mental and physical attributes the same way, and finally read in the pros and cons from the scouting report.  The Second player is blah blah blah. His mental attributes on a scale of 1 to 20 are blah blah balance and pros and cons are blah blah blah.

So let’s see what kind of report ChatGPT gives me.  Does it just regurgitate Wikipedia or give actual, useful, and correct advice.

OK I understand your reasoning, but I’m not quite sure I agree with it. It’s true that Yago’s heading rating is 15, but Rochez’s rating is 14 which is not much worse. And Rochez is the better shooter, his acceleration is 15 compared to Yago’s 11, he has better anticipation and is far more brave. Considering those facts, why do you maintain that Yago would make a better starter than Rochez. Am I focusing on the wrong attributes? Please reconsider all the information I have provided you and prepare a new and better report. It’s ok if your conclusions are the same, but you need to do a better and more thorough job of analyzing and reporting on my players if you want to keep your job as assistant manager. Well, not sure SI is too keen on such an investment because, surely, an AI which a dev team can feed the millions of readily available football news articles online to develop a knack for football lingo and writing style and also learn on its own on top of that won't come too cheap exactly, I imagine..

Not that I suffer with it, but adding such a feature could be limiting for a number of the player base. 

I welcome press conferences having multiple options available for saying similar stuff, rather than the AI just using the same question time and time again.

The free-text would be potentially more interesting, although all depends on the implementation.  It is also limiting, like Cobblers said.  I don't think you should necessarily have to have a spotless grasp of the English (or any other language if supported) to be able to get the most out of a game.  

But having said that, there's probably no way you can really stop a lot of these implementations from becoming repetitive.  More combinations just means it'll take longer to get repetitive.  Offering some kind of free-text option might boost those options massively, but you still need to translate that into something that actually means something to the game, and if there's (number completely imagined) a million different ways you can say something, but only 10 datapoints coming out of that, then you don't have a million different ways to say it.

Sure, it's megalolz when you add "and journalists are cockroaches and scum, and I'm sleeping with the chairperson's daughter" and you get an AI write an article about it, and the article is quite coherent and believable even though it does also accuse you of being a racist. Then you still have your job and journalists still like you, and it's not exactly adding to the realism.

Similarly, the assistant's advice is unreliable enough already, a glorified text continuation engine that's absorbed lots of sentences about FM and football but has no idea how to actually play the game and needs careful prompt engineering to generate any advice at all isn't an improvement (seriously, if you type out which striker is better in every relevant attribute, it's not a surprise a text continuation engine could give you something that looks like a reasoned answer based on which attributes one striker is better than the other. Yago Cariello is a crap Complete Forward and Rochez probably better suited for a pressing and counter attacking game though, so I'm not sure it's a good answer except from the point of view of being coherent text...). 

Every time it gives you a good answer like suggesting that although Messi is a world class footballer he is not typically considered a good target man [because he is not known for his strength or aerial ability), it'll give you a bad one like suggesting he's an excellent pressing forward. The game already has functionality that's a bit like that sometimes, but at least it can be debugged...

Another experiment, kinda long.  It uses NO information from the game other than the fact that my tactic is a cautious fluid counter attacking 4-2-3-1 DM AM.  

I simply went through the settings in the tactical creator settings and asked ChatGPT which settings I should use.

So let’s see, can I really have a normal back and forth conversation with my assistant manager about creating my tactic?  (obviously some of the questions are intentionally “dumb,” but it’s an experiment.)

I was just playing with the tool asking it various things and I decided to ask it to create a wage structure for my team. The parameters I gave are a budget of £111000 and I have 1 star player, 2 important players and 12 regular starters. I also told it that there are 25 players and some of those 25 are subs and young players and subs but I didn't specify the exact number and it gave me this: 

Here is a revised sample wage structure that takes into account your team's specific composition, with 1 star player, 2 important players, and 12 regular starters:

Star player: 45000 (40% of budget)

Important players: 30000 each (27% of budget)

Regular starters: 10000 each (9% of budget)

Subs: 6000 each (5% of budget)

As far as I can tell, OpenAI has no plans to license the technology; it looks as though they'll monetize it by charging per query. So SI would have to buy millions of credits to allow FM players to make use of the technology. How much are FM players prepared to pay for slightly better scout reports and ass man advice?

It's a cool technology, but its relevance to FM for the near future is pretty much zero.

Well the words are good. Shame about the maths :D 

(Same with the advice about set pieces tbh. Coherent sentences with all the right words in that sort of looks like football advice, but then you start to read it and it worries that marking the opposition goalkeeper at an attacking corner might give away a set piece close to your goal :lol:`)

The problem with this is that it simply bloats the game quite a bit if every interaction you have a back and forth typing conversation. While something like this might be nice for articles and scout reports and maybe assistant advice, there are still crutches that chatGPT uses.

I've asked it multiple "which is better" questions, and each time and it does a 3 paragraph essay: One paragraph for the option 1, one paragraph option 2, "ultimately it depends" paragraph 3. I gave it a must answer question "are you liberal, conservative, or centrist" and the bot ended up crashing.

lol they designed it to be as safe as possible without offending anyone so it doesn't end up like Microsoft's chatbot that became racist. I've found that the best way to use it is to set defined parameters or ask it to answer "yes" or "no".

The main issue I have with it is that it doesn't have the capability to search the internet and its knowledge ends in 2021
