New Laptop/PC Advice -Please Read the Opening Post

Hi, 

I’m looking to buy a new laptop which will run FM 20 on comfortably without slow reactions or any lag. I’m not fussed about the 3D match engine and will happily play with 2D classic and toned down settings? 
 

This is the spec of the laptop I am looking to buy, will this be enough. 
 

Intel® Core™ i5-1035G1 Processor
RAM: 8 GB / 
Would Intel UHD integrated graphics be enough to support the game?

Football manager would be the only type of game I would play. 

Or if there any recommendations for a laptop which would good at a £550 budget?

You just copy the saves over with a USB, that works fine.

Macs are fine - but most don't come with a dedicated graphics card - so you'll be playing 3d matches on low-mid settings.

Just checked the technical specs, and the answer is "not a chance". Not only is the processor poor for anything beyond Microsoft Word and some Netflix (it's below minimum specs), but it only has 64GB of storage and, importantly, the version of Windows it uses also doesn't allow Steam to be installed, and so the game couldn't be installed on it even if you wanted to try it.

If you had to buy a MacBook, I'd go for the first one, but neither is going to run the game "effortlessly", as the processor in the first one isn't particularly good and is 5 generations behind the newest processors, and whilst the processor in the one in the 2nd link is from the newest generation of processors, it's basically the least powerful one, and so whilst the turbo speed for the processor is a decent amount over the minimum requirements, that presupposes that the speed won't be throttled by heat, which laptops (especially thin ones like the MacBook Air) will suffer from. For the same price as the one from Walmart, you could likely get a much better Windows laptop that would also do Photoshop rendering, etc, faster than the MacBooks would do too.

I echo @JordanMillward_1 here - I am a graphic designer - so a Mac Book isn't powerful enough for photoshop, sorry. But you would need at least 16gb RAM and a decent processor and a good graphics card - plus you need more storage for the Scratch Disks.

Macs don't come with graphics cards any more - and without a graphics card - there's plenty of Photoshop features that don't work without a dedicated graphics card.

I'd save the trouble of a Mac and go for a really really good laptop for that price and money.

IT's not bad - no dedicated graphics card - which isn't a bad thing, and AMD built in graphics card is good enough to play 3D detail at low-medium settings.

What's your actual budget. This would be good for example - Better processor (key for FM) and a low-mid range graphics card dedicated which is nice.

That's right. So it doesn't phase me when I see it.

How to Turn Off Windows 10 S Mode

1. Go to Settings.
2. Then select Update & Security.
3. In the left sidebar, click Activation.
4. Then click “Go to the Store.” ...
5. Press the “Get” button under the “Switch out of S Mode” section and wait for the process to complete.

It's a one way street, no going back once you change.

As per opening post, it's ambigious to guess how many leagues etc.

But all most computers can rull all leagues with maximum database - just depends how fast it runs and if you're happy with the speed. 

It's a great processor - but certainly not "the best" you can get.

 

 

Building one is much better option than buying one off the shelf - with the budget you have.

Looking to get a new laptop specifically for FM.  Usually play UK based dafuge challenges with a large database. I would like the game to run at a decent speed and to be able to watch in 3D.

Hard drive is storage. How many coats do you have, do you need a bigger wardrobe? 

It won't impact on the game speed at all, size is nothing to do with speed.

But, Windows 10 takes up 20gb of space - so you're down to 236gb
- a few more apps added into the mix that come preinstalled, maybe another 20gb.

Steam takes (I think) 20gb.
FM takes 7gb - and saved game files are needed to be saved too - which vary in sizes. 

At the moment with a basic install and Windows, Steam and FM - you're using about 70gb of space.

Your storage now is about 186gb.

Which is a lot in fairness. 

If you include downloads (netflix for example) or things like that it could fill up very fast. 

If you have images - video content backed up from your phone etc. 

 

How long would it take to build up - well how how much space do you need - and do you plan on needing more space, for example, if you were to buy new coats, would you throw out the old ones or try to cram everything into the one wardrobe.

Apologies if the not the best thread but i'm mulling over buying a new 16" Macbook Pro, they finally have a pretty decent looking spec, I use Macbooks for work hence needing to stick to a Macbook, I have a 2015 Macbook Pro and playing FM, it doesn't last long as sounds like it's going to take of (fans go mental) and gets hotter than the sun! Not a good experience, is anyone here playing FM currently on a 16" Macbook? ?

Is it pretty smooth? Stay quiet most of the time? Stays cool? Does the game run fast? How are the graphic capabilities? 

I'm not a heavy user, so mostly only a single country and 4/5 leagues running at once

Are there any other features that you need? Do you want to store a lot of media? Plug in an SD card? Use a webcam? Play some more demanding games? Or is FM the only consideration? Gaming laptops (especially the cheaper ones) often compromise in some or all of these areas.

This particular model is apparently difficult to service too, so you might be stuck with that amount. Hi everyone

I've read this whole thread over the last few days to try and get a better understanding before I actually posted for advice - thank you all!

My current laptop is over 10 years old and I'm still playing FM12 as that's the last version that still runs ok on it. I'm looking for a laptop with a budget of £500. Don't really want to go over that but I might be able to siphon a bit more away from the monthly housekeeping I send my missus if I really need to.

I do enjoy watching the highlights in 3D but I know that laptops around my budget might struggle to do this, even in low detail - so it would be good if I could play the matches in 3D in medium but not a deal-breaker. The main thing I'm worried about is the noise. As someone has previously said, they don't want their laptop to sound like a plane taking off, so does that mean I need to look at the type of processor first and foremost? Would that rule out processors that have a U at the end?

Not that bothered about looks/weight/portability, 99% of the time I'll be playing on the sofa, connected to power and plastic casings are fine as I always make sure I look after things! I'd only be using the laptop for FM, playing poker online and general internet browsing.

I'm probably not that best placed to answer as it is a work machine and I'm not playing FM on it in the traditional sense, I'm using it alongside Apples development tools which places additional strain on the machine.

I can say from my experience it is a very fast machine, but it also gets very hot and the battery life is poor - fingers crsssed Apple sort it out with updates but tbh I find the quality of MacOS has decreased with every version for the last few years so I don't feel hopeful.

It is also _really_ expensive and if it was my own money I wouldn't buy it, I'd favour a Windows laptop where you could get something of similar spec for far cheaper.

If you can get it for £460 that would be great value. Even at £550 it's pretty good. In any case I'd definitely recommend an AMD 3000 series processor in that price range as they tend to have much better integrated graphics than Intel counterparts so you may be able to play the 3D match engine on lower quality settings.

An update again. I'm finished with the Boreham Wood save now in 2031 after 3 consecutive PL titles and 2 UCL titles in 3 years.  Boreham Wood was the biggest team in Europe and the youth rating must have been very high as well. Never got the U23 team playing competitive matches.

I was wondering if I play every match in 3D and load about 20 leagues with a large database of the laptop will run this with ease? Laptop specs are listed below. Thats a £1000 + laptop

You could run nearly all leagues acceptably in my opinion

It's also worth noting that all saves get slower the more years that pass in game a good way to test it is to load your preferred setup (20 leagues with a large database) and leave the game on holiday over night and start playing a good few years into the game to see if it's fast enough for your taste

Cheers. Do you think there will be any problem with overheating with this machine? It does have the new cryo-tech cooling with 39% more copper in the thermal module. Also has the vapor chamber cooling technology which helps to evaporate heat from the CPU and the GPU. This new model also has 25% more fan blades so I’m thinking I should be fine. Also only weighs about 6.1 lbs.

Thanks Gangor. Managed to get it for £475 in the end and I pick it up tomorrow. I wonder how much difference I’ll notice between FM12 and FM20..... 🙃

It's a beast of a machine mate, you will have no problems at all.  Make sure you put it on High Performance under power plans.

If the computer does over heat then it will throttle down to base speeds which is not ideal but I do not see this happening on your machine at all

If you want to keep an eye on thermals a great program that I use is HWMonitor

This is how it looks.

The bit you want to keep an eye on is the value column for clocks and Temperature Package whilst you are playing a match.  In a match I would imagine that processor will go up to its full 5GHz but the value will throttle down under load if the cooling solution is weak which would probably coincide with the Temperature package hitting the high 90's

This may help someone but like I say in your case I can't see it being an issue
