Race 1 of 18, End of race update (24/6/09), Part 1

After the top 3 seemed nailed on for a podium at the midpoint of the race, it was nearly all change up the top. Wok Ho Lai of Vietnam fell away all the way into 7th, having spent 9 weeks on the sidelines with 2 separate injuries. At the same time, Italian Carlos Ferrari couldn't hold on to 3rd place due to picking up too many yellow cards and a red in the season, missing out on 3rd by just 1 point, and having scored 4 more goals than Belgian Sjefke Vandervlugge, who moved up 3 places to take a podium.

All this meant that James May looked to be on course for the win, but he could only hold onto a comfortable 2nd. So where did the winner come from? Singapore. Buay Tahan, 35 points off the leader in December, had an amazing finish to the season, scoring 15 times to end as top scorer with 24, and in the end taking the win by 18 points.

Outside of the fight at the top, the battle for the lesser points was even closer. Everyone in the top 12 stayed there, Lawrence Lazewski Jr. and Alex Barkley being notable losers as they each slipped 5. For positions 13-15, those who were there all fell at least 8 places, allowing Jonathan, Brettney Joven and Slartibartfast Irjala to sneak into the points. Jonathan moved up 12 places, but Irjala's feat was even greater - he moved up a massive 20 places to secure a single point.

One person who has the right to feel agrieved is Spain's Pee Wee, who was 39th at the mid-race update. He ended up 23 places higher in 16th, agonisingly close to scoring a point. His finish to the season will provide encouragement for next season if nothing else.

The biggest faller was Darren Gilmartin of Croatia, who moved down 18. He did however manage to score more than Marcoos Lamont of Ivory Coast, who managed only 4 goals all season, the lowest of anyone.

This season showed proof, if any was needed, that yellow and red cards don't help if you want to be among the point finishers. Only 4 of the top 15 have been shown a red card this season, while further down the rankings, Ricky Nakano and Joe Tompkins each saw red twice, but even they were outdone by Mikael Senna, the Brazilian receiving his marching orders on 3 occasions.

Despite this, Senna has become the first player to secure a move away from their starting club, and will return to his homeland.

So the players who have won their teams promotion to the BSP are Brettney Joven (Chelmsford), Brian Moore (St. Albans), Oskar Schindler (Gateshead) and Zappy Zap (Hinckley). At the other end of the table, these players will need to be looking for a new club after suffering relegation: Sam Fisher (Vauxhall), Liami Hurstovic (Hucknall), Nee Thaweechoksubsin (Fisher), Wok Ho Lai (Dorchester) and Az Toscani (Hayes & Yeading).

Injury news:

- Alex Barkley is out for 6 days to 3 weeks with a hip injury.

- Nick Jnr. is out with a calf strain for 1-4 days.

Transfer news:

- Mikael Senna has become the first player who has agreed to leave their starting club. On August 1st he will leave Fleetwood to join Corinthians in his native Brazil, for £0 + clauses.

- Kenichi Morishita is wanted by Oxford.

- Daemon is wanted by En Avant de Guingamp.

- Carlos Ferrari is wanted by Modena and Taranto.

- Pee Wee is wanted by Bilbao Ath.

- Ben Taylor is wanted by Barnsley, Blackpool, Bradford, Gillingham, Northampton, Nottm Forest, Swansea and Accrington.

- Az Toscani is transfer listed by request, and is wanted by Blackpool, Gillingham, Northampton, Swansea, Motherwell, Woking and Accrington.

- Jonathan is wanted by Oxford.

- Brian Moore is also wanted by Oxford.

- Buay Tahan is wanted by Oxford and Raith.

- Gervase Smith is another player wanted by Oxford.

- Nick Jnr. is wanted by Bournemouth, Cardiff, Darlington, Morecambe, Northampton, Torquay and Yeovil.

Other news:

- All but 2 of the players are still on £5p/w. Ben Taylor earns £50p/w, while Wok Ho Lai earns £2000p/w at relegated Dorchester, and is the only player on a full time contract.

- On the international front, 9 players have made their full debuts. Joe Tompkins is the most-capped player, with 8 (but no goals). Brettney Joven and Brian Moore each have 3 goals.

- Brettney Joven of Latvia has the highest value, at £16k.

Overall Standings:

Table1.jpg

So Singapore take an early lead in the Championship race, although with 17 races to go it's difficult to draw any conclusions from this. All 4 of the players who won promotion to the BSP finished in the top 15, and will fancy their chances of more points next season in a higher reputation league. It will be interesting to see how many games Mikael Senna will play for Corinthians next season (bearing in mind that it's not a playable league), but with the higher reputation (12) of the Brazilian Second Division, he might not need to play as often for a good point-scoring finish.

The next update will come at the end of the summer transfer window, and by then there could be a few more players moving on to bigger and better things.

Fred Stavros had a better scoring rate than most of the top 15, Farsley just didn't play him enough

Did he get injured or is the Farsley manager just an arse :D

Looking forward to next season, KUTGW

I am pleased with Sjefke, an excellent 3rd place with destinctly below average player abilities, in a team that missed relegation by only 6 points. Hopefully it's just a matter of time before this hidden gem is dicovered by a bigger team :)

Just looked now, and Stavros actually suffered from 7 separate, different injuries in the season, leaving him out of action for a total of 19-20 weeks. The worst was a twisted ankle at the start of the season, leaving him sidelined for 5 weeks.

Buay Tahan is first!

Buay Tahan ah!

Woot! Told you I will be the top scorer with my elite skill of finishing 10 and composure 9. :D Only Mark Copper has a better striker rate than Buay Tahan. Too bad, he only get 17 games, else he could have been a threat.

I have won the a Striker sign-up before, I hope it is a start leading to another win, even though I am counting the eggs early. We also have a saying in Singapore, "don't praise a Singaporean because he will get "big-headed" and screw it up the next one".

"Singaporean buay sia o lo". :D

KUTGW. It was an interesting first race. Feels like Brawn GP now. :p

Missed out on 15th place by 3 points :( An average goals/games ratio of just under 1 in 2 isn't too bad though. I'm hoping Ping Pong can build on a decent 1st season for next year.

Race 2 of 18, Transfer window update (1/9/09)

Injury news:

- JJ Blaze has a pulled hamstring, and is out for 4-5 weeks.

- Alex Yong has a broken toe, and will be out of action for 2-3 months.

- James May has concussion, and will be back in 9-12 days time.

- Jamie Mitchell is another player with a broken toe, but he should be back in 3-5 weeks from now.

- Sam Fisher will be back from a groin strain in 1 day.

- Danny McKay has a thigh strain, and should be out for 2-3 weeks.

- Gervase Smith has a sprained ankle, and is out for 4-8 days.

Transfer news:

- Mikael Senna has completed his free transfer from Fleetwood to Corinthians.

- Magnus Vestergaard has unexpectedly left Bognor Regis on a free, and is currently without a club. Brighton, Leyton Orient and Millwall are after the Sweden U21 vice-captain.

- Kenichi Morishita is wanted by Port Vale.

- Pee Wee is wanted by Sant Andreu.

- Carlos Ferrari is wanted by Cesena.

- Az Toscani is no longer on the transfer list by request, despite Hayes & Yeading suffering relegation. He is wanted by Blackpool, Huddersfield, York and Dundee Utd.

Other news:

- Wok Ho Lai is now only earning £1800p/w after relegation. Ben Taylor gets £50p/w at AFC Wimbledon, Mikael Senna rakes in £30p/w on a full time contract at Corinthians, and Zappy Zap at Hinckley gets £10p/w. All other players are still on £5p/w.

- Mikael Senna now has the highest value, at £450k. The next highest is for Brettney Joven, at £22k.

There hasn't been the flurry of transfer activity that may have been expected, but this will mean that the strikers should score even more goals this season.

'Home Races'

At the start you all chose a race between 2 and 17 which would be designated as your players 'home race'. This will give your player a small points boost - 10% of your players total. This may not turn out to be much, and it may not even change your finishing position for a season, but it could be enough to win an extra 1 or 2 Championship points at the end of the season, which ultimately could affect who wins in the end.

Race 2 is the Home Race for Sam Fisher of England and Alex Yong of Malaysia. Yong finished in 5th in the opening race, and will be looking for his bonus to help him achieve something similar. Fisher finished in a disappointing 26th, but will be confident of better this season.

Race 2 of 18, Mid-race update (31/12/09), Part 1

With Buay Tahan winning the first race of the season, and in fairly convincing fashion, the 1st half of this race would show if he is going to be a serious challenger for the title. All signs point to yes, as he sits in 6th place, with the joint highest tally of goals. However, that 6th place will surely come under pressure, with 14 rivals only 20 or less points behind.

The top 4 are, unsurprisingly, the 4 players that are playing in the Blue Square Premier after winning promotion last season. The BSP gives them more points, and they are all putting this to good use, all in double figures for goals. Brettney Joven leads the way for Latvia, with Turkey's Zappy Zap in hot pursuit.

In 5th place at the moment is the highest player still playing in the BSN or BSS - Jody Flint. In a huge change from this time last year (where Flint was yet to score), he's scored 16 times in just 21 games, and looks on course for a solid points finish.

In another difference from the first race, only 2 from last year's top 7 are currently in the top 15. Malaysian Alex Yong is the lowest of them, down in 34th, even with his home race bonus. Sam Fisher is also low in the standings despite his bonus, as he currently lies in 29th.

Sjefke Vandervlugge, on the podium last race, has taken on the role of bad boy, receiving 9 yellows and 3 reds in only 19 games. He actually has a decent scoring record, and without this indiscipline would be close to the top 15. Ricky Nakano of Canada once again has 2 red cards.

One to watch in the 2nd half is Mikael Senna. He's only made 2 starts and scored once for Corinthians, but thanks to the higher reputation of his league, he's up in 7th. All he has to do is score a bit more often, and he'll have a great chance of at least a podium finish.

Looking at the foot of the standings we find Magnus Vestergaard, who hasn't been at a club for 6 months now. He's keeping the 2 juniors, Lawrence Lazewski Jr. of Poland and Nick Jnr. of Holland off the bottom, who only have 5 goals each.

Jamie Mitchell, Liam Ferguson and Mark Cooper are among those who are making a big improvement from last race, sitting from 8th to 10th, and are all on course for decent points.
