New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Hi folks,

Its time to upgrade my laptop for FM17.

I have £500 tops to play with, I only use my laptop for FM and for going on the internet, no other games and I'm not on the net much. No downloading movies, streaming anything like that.

 

 

I like to play with a couple of countries going, never more than 3. maybe 10 leagues going tops.

I never use the 3D stuff and just watch the highlights with text comms.

I add in the odd kit & badge add ins but nothing too fancy. Hope this is all the info you need, can anyone recommend something I should go for?

Just a quick one. Got myself all the parts to build my desktop. How do you think the i5-6600K will perform, with an SSD and 16GB of ram. Im guessing well of course but do you think that is a decent processor for the likes of FM?

Just to butt in, I have an i5-6400 with an SSD and 16GB of ram and it runs very well.  I can imagine the 6600k (especially overclocked) would beat that comfortably.

Oh obvious;y very well.. the 6600k is fantastic, it's the best i5 you can buy at the moment for my money.. and with the K unlocker on it too.. always room for extra tweaking.

 

Will run like a beast.

 

All i'll say without wanting to come across as patronising, as frankly, you may be a total pro at building pc's for all I know... but just be careful about which motherboard you choose, it's more important than ever these days and can easily bottleneck performance if not suited for your needs.

 

Let me know how you get on with it :)

Probably the best spec around for your budget on a 17"  AFAIK...

 

You could go down the pcspecialist route and configure your own but you pay a premium for that.. the msi linked above is good quality and ready to go

I've used that exact laptop for two weeks previous to this week and it's superb.. the cpu is brand spanking new and is fantastic .. 8gb ram is more than enough (you can cheaply add more later if needed) and 256gb SSD is more than enough for fm etc.

 

I say go for it.. it's a beautiful machine, I enjoyed using it.

Yeah I'm thinking I'll pay the extra £48 too get the ram too 16gb but it's on sale ATM so can get another 12% off so seems like a great deal too me.

No that's great mate, thanks for the advice! Can't remember off the top of my head what it is but will post when I get home from work. All from overclockers and was all recommended so hopefully all kosher. Not a n00b with computers but no pro either, first computer build. 

Yes naturally I know it's a good processor and didn't want to ask just to show off my specs like some, genuinely wanted to know, or make sure, it will run fm really well :) so thanks Welshace for confirming that!!

My trusty PC died this past weekend. 6 years together. :(

 

anyway so I'm in the market for a laptop and I've seen some decent ones linked but I'm just unsure as it's been 9 years since I owned a laptop.

 

Budget is around 500 max, and I'll be using it for FM, work (office etc) and browsing. I do have other steam games like civ 5 but I doubt I'll be able to play those on a budget laptop. Good battery life is a must, any recommendations? I've been looking at HP and a couple of asus on save on laptops and I've not seen anything that pulls me in.

 

ideally an SSD would be good as I have a portable hdd already.

Difficult one to judge..  The Msi's cpu is inherently more powerful in terms of grunt force, but the dell's is brand new and hasn't really been benchmarked properly to judge it by... personally, as much as I like the dell, the msi is probably the more powerful of the two. It doesn't come with an SSD, but the msi has a decent graphics card .. so It's a toss up for me really.

 

You mention the screen.. if you're happy with a 15" you should consider this as a middle ground of both choices...

Your budget and requirements don't leave you a whole lot of room for performance but these two are very decent for the price:

Thanks Welshace - doesn't seem to have an SSD either?

As an amateur, would I run into any difficulty configuring my own? What's the benefit of ready made?

Many thanks, appreciated.

Ill check again around Christmas, see if the sales chuck up any tempting offers. I do like the idea though of having absolutely nothing unnecessary (in terms of software) added to the system, which is why I'm favouring PCS.

Hi All,

Just after some advice really. 

I am looking to get a new laptop mainly for use with FM and normal browsing. I currently have an iPhone and iPad and was possibly looking at getting a Macbook Pro which I think they are meant to be releasing a new version at the end of this month so may hold out for that. I am aware they are more expensive and can get a good Windows machine for less. I was mainly thinking of getting a Mac as I already have some Apple products, so would be continuity i guess.

Any advantages/disadvantages buying a Mac to play FM on over a PC?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi All. It's that time of year again...

A lot of advice/purchases seem to be going down the laptop route, however I'm looking for desktop advice. My current computer is really on its last legs - the last version of FM I played on it was FM14.

Anyway. The advice I'm looking for are the elements of the computer that means I can run FM17 (and beyond) to in a sense future-proof it as far as possible.

While I am interested in the graphics, I tend to revert to text only and running a high number of leagues/big database etc. Beyond FM, iTunes & browsing, a bit of excel. Thats it really.

Budget in the 500-800 region. Any advice on what I should not scrimp on, and areas I can be more frugal, would be appreciated.

No real benefit of ready made in this case as pcspecialist are top notch and their builds are excellent

What about this one for $50 more? (sorry no pound sign on my keyboard :D ) It has SSD and SATA, plus 16GB.

For PC, look for either the i5-6600K or the i7-6700K, get some DDR4-3000MHz RAM (2 * 8GB SIMMS), a PCIe M.2 SSD 256GB, maybe a mATX MB like the Asus Z170M-PLUS. Just need to add a PSU, a case and a graphics card. I think that should be doable for your budget and should give plenty of grunt. I am basing this on Aussie prices after conversion.

Anyone bought any PC/Laptops from PC Specialist? 

As I would have to buy keyboard, mouse and a monitor I am actually thinking a laptop may be the best option. I have up to £1000 to spend, could I get something that will last me 4-5 years from PC Specialist do you think?

After posting on a pc forum they have basically said i dont need to upgrade because the performance difference wouldnt be noticeable and they have just suggested putting more memory in and getting a new Graphics Card and a SSD.Would you agree with this advice?

Finally. Built. Wont be doing that again lol. First Motherboard was not compatible with DDR4 Ram so that went back, but it did mean i upgraded my choice and went with an Asus Z170-E Intel Z170. Everything seems to be running smoothly after a few hiccups (applying arctic thermal paste and not noticing the stock paste already on CPU cooler........cpu temp of 89 degrees followed.....) and looking forward to pitting it against FM17, especially with 64bit Fm now announced :D

That's great... getting thermal pasting wrong can cause ridiculous issues down the line... it's my pet hate  when i'm building or fixing pc's. Congrats on your new toy... will be beasty.

I'm half tempted to stream via Steam from my living room PC to my Macbook Pro, these are the specs:

PC: i7 3770 3.4Ghz (Turbo mode on my MSI mobo puts it at 3.9Ghz on all cores), 16GB RAM, Nitro RX480 8GB

Macbook Pro: i7 2.3Ghz, 16GB RAM, Nvidia 750M 2GB

The Mac has handled the previous few versions of FM well though it seems to take while to crunch through results. Is the 64bit version going to give me a performance boost?

Out of curiosity, what kind of performance do you get from your GTX 750Ti? I'm guessing you can play on high detail graphic settings, at 1080p resolution and a fairly high frame rate? That's a GDDR5 card if I'm not mistake and it should give you high to very high settings as far as the 3D match display is concerned. I've got an older GT 730 DDR3 card which I'm planning on testing for a friend and it should handle FM 16 without any major issues so I thought I'd ask about your card since it caught my eye. If you don't mind, of course. ;)

Especially since the direction FM has taken in the previous installments with the higher emphasis on graphics. There are a number of factors involved such as but not limited to, resolution at which the game is played and the resolution which the graphics component (dedicated or shared) can comfortably push out to (not to mention the type of memory, ie. DDR2, DDR3, DDR5. Try running FM 16 on a 512MB DDR2 card), the level of details (including anti-aliasing which is a huge memory bandwidth killer by itself), texture details, etc. In fact, the ability to adjust the frame rate speaks volumes about how far FM has progressed and how graphic-heavy it has become.

My definition of ancient is 8+ years and when I tell you that my DDR2 card is ancient and cannot handle FM16 on 3D (at any resolution) without lagging and stuttering constantly (settings: everything is on Low, no anti-aliasing, etc), I really mean ancient and cannot handle FM 16. 

People that are purchasing systems (laptop or desktop) need to be aware of the difference in card memory type and the type of graphics card in general they are getting, more than ever before since SI is pushing forward with their 3D graphics emphasis and user interface animations which require a more capable card so the user can experience the changes (and even play the game smoothly, to be frank). Even the skin/user interface has become more graphic heavy if you compare it to previous years installments (and I mean within a a couple of years only).

I'm certain no one wants to shell out 500+ dollars/pounds/whatever of their money only to find out they cannot play the game on very high graphic settings at 1080p resolution. Even worse, if they can't play the next few installments with the same, highest settings possible at a 1080p or the very least 720p resolution (which in my opinion is not acceptable).

I'm very, very close to ordering. Of the choices on here it seems a good deal (especially with the £50 off)

I only really want it for football manager. If I could play around 20 leagues smoothly for a decade, or so (in game). Will the 3d match engine run smoothly?

Sorry if i'm repeating questions. It's just my first time buying a Laptop new, and i'd be gutted if I got it wrong.

If anybody knows of something cheaper, that would run it as well that would be great! I wont be holding my breath on that though.
