That's great... getting thermal pasting wrong can cause ridiculous issues down the line... it's my pet hate  when i'm building or fixing pc's. Congrats on your new toy... will be beasty.

Cheers buddy! Glad the system flagged it up! Silly mistake but so far all is running well. Cant wait to start :)

hi all,

Welshace, am I understanding correctly that you use this Laptop yourself?

http://www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-15-5567-laptop/pd?oc=cn55712&model_id=inspiron-15-5567-laptop

I'm very, very close to ordering. Of the choices on here it seems a good deal (especially with the £50 off)

I only really want it for football manager. If I could play around 20 leagues smoothly for a decade, or so (in game). Will the 3d match engine run smoothly?

Sorry if i'm repeating questions. It's just my first time buying a Laptop new, and i'd be gutted if I got it wrong.

If anybody knows of something cheaper, that would run it as well that would be great! I wont be holding my breath on that though.

Many thanks.

Not using it anymore, but did for a few weeks and loved it, fm16 ran like a dream on it actually and it should handle a decent amount of leagues for sure.

I'm not sure what else better you could get for £450 really..

Hi all.

I am after some help looking for a decent laptop for my 11 year old sons Xmas present to play FM 17 on.

Something that would cope with:

2-3 leagues loaded

Medium database and 3D match highlights.

My budget is around £300-500

Thanks in advance

There are several lap[tops posted on this page even that would fall into your category.. It's just a matter of choice really, will your son want to play anything else? will anyone else be using it for anything? etc

The laptop would mainly be for Football Manager with maybe a bit of Web browsing for school work etc.

With him only being 11 the cheaper the option the better really but I don't mind paying the full amount of my budget for better performance though.

You could certainly go cheaper than the top end of your budget.. but you could always pay a little extra now and have it last a while for him/you ..

The dell posted a few posts above is brand spanking new and will see him through secondary school and beyond i'm sure.

Pretty much any laptop that has been posted on this thread will meet your requirements though tbh

Thanks for your help. This thread has been a life saver. I will have a good look through everything again but I am definitely swayed towards the Dell as of now.

Gaming in general on macs is a much murkier proposition... it's improved in recent times, but it's not quite there yet... certainly so with fm in recent times too.

Thanks for your reply Welshace :)

I was only really thinking of getting a Mac (Either iMac or MacBook Pro) as I currently have an iPhone and iPad, so would fit in well with my other devices. I will only be playing Football Manager on the PC/Laptop and just doing normal browsing the rest of the time. My previous desktop was 5 years old and having moved into a smaller place about 6 months ago, I could do with saving some space, so that's why I am considering a laptop. I guess you do get more value for money with desktops though.

If you were in my position what would you go with out of a Windows PC or Mac?

Thanks again :)

Thanks Welshace :)

What do you think of Dell? I have been looking at the Dell XPS laptop but seems quite expensive for what you get.

Would I be best looking at someone like PC Specialist?

If you look back even a page you will find i'm a fan of Dell for sure...

Pcspecialist is also great...

The fantastic thing about pc's over macs is the choice...

So the question you have to ask yourself is what do you want out your laptop?

You  start with a budget and then decide what you want..whether it's performance first, build quality etc second or vice versa  etc

Hi,

I'm looking to update my laptop (currently on a 7 year old Macbook Pro), and want to be able to run 10+ leagues, with a good sized database. The graphics on the 3D match engine are very important to me (particularly with no lag, as this was a big problem I had on FM16, I'm guessing down to my aging laptop).  I'd be using the laptop mainly for FM.

I've seen these two laptops, but wondering if this is overkill or about right.  I ideally don't want to spend over 600 pounds, but happy to go over if it's a laptop that will last a good amount of time.

http://www.johnlewis.com/lenovo-ideapad-700-laptop-intel-core-i5-12gb-ram-1tb-hdd-128gb-ssd-15-6-full-hd-black/p2905282

http://www.dell.com/uk/business/p/inspiron-15-7566-laptop/pd?oc=bn56601&model_id=inspiron-15-7566-laptop

Which would be the better of the two?

Any advice would be much appreciated as I'm not very clued up on laptops.

Thanks

Thanks Welshace, I would predominantly be looking for performance first, followed by build quality a very close second.

Do Dell's still come with loads of bloatware installed or have they cut down on this?

My maximum budget would be around £1200, so any advice on where would be best to spend this (i was initially looking at PC Specialist) that would be great. I was looking at below laptop on their site:

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/defianceII-15/

The only upgrade I was thinking of doing would be to select a 500GB or 1TB SSD.

I was also looking at the 17" screens as well, as my laptop would be used as desktop replacement , so would not be leaving the house.

What do you think?

I wouldn't buy a laptop with the GTX 9xx series of GPU's now, unless they were seriously cut down in price. The reason being that the new GTX 10xx series of GPU's are so much more powerful. The lowest spec'd GTX 1060 has got a performance that surpasses the previous most powerful laptop GPU, the GTX 980M. Furthermore there's now very little performance differences between the laptop and the desktop versions of these cards - exemplified by Nvidia ditching the M suffix for their laptop versions of the cards now. They do still come in versions for laptop or desktop - for example the GTX 1060 Laptop vs. GTX 1060 Desktop - but the difference in performance between them is now so small that it's no longer much of an issue .... typically less than 5%.

By all means - a laptop from PC Specialist is still a perfectly valid option - but choose one with the latest generation GPU in it. Since you're looking at a laptop with that sort of powerful GPU in it (the GTX 970M/980M), I presume that you want that GPU power for other games than FM. If not, it's a bit of an overkill. If it is the case that you want more GPU power for other games (more advanced graphics) than FM, you should really look at a laptop with a GTX 1060 instead - it will outperform the 980M, and most certainly the GTX 970M. And it will play virtually any game at max or very near max graphics settings at the "normal" resolution of 1920x1080.  For higher resolutions, choose the GTX 1070 or the GTX 1080.

If on the other hand you don't need this GPU power, I think you would be better off looking at a laptop with the GTX 950M or 960M instead (since the new GTX 1050/1050Ti are not yet on the market). These cards will be plenty for FM, and they will be far less costly, but still be usable for playing most other games - but then often at moderated settings and/or even lower resolution.

Just got to say that this thread has to be one of the best going on these forums. Clearly has helped so many people, including myself, and not just for FM reasons. And most of this is down to Welshace so thanks for that mate, you have far more patience than I do in answering all of the questions on here!!

Thanks for your reply thomit really helpful and has possibly saved me a lot of money :)

The only game I will be playing on the laptop is FM, other than that all I will be doing is the usual browsing, checking emails etc. From reading the forum its the processor that is the most important I believe? I do want to watch 3D as well, so looking for something which can handle 3D on high settings.

Ideally I would like something with a 17" screen, so if there is anything you recommend that would be greatly appreciated :)

Finally just to echo what moyesout and flogside have said, this thread is great and do know what I will do with out it!. Big thanks to Welshace as well and all forum members who contribute here :)

Thanks all

Yes, processor is key. Get a laptop with a Core i7 6700HQ processor, 8GB RAM, a GTX 950 or 960 graphics card ... and if possible a SSD "hard disk". Then you have pretty much an optimal laptop for FM, you can't really - in practical terms - do any better. Well ... you can, but at a hefty price.

Btw: Apart from the GPU - mine is a GTX 970M that I use for other games than FM - that is the laptop specs I have myself. I play with all  available leagues playable, and some 180k players/staff loaded in my save. It's not the speediest setup ever for playing FM, but for me -  perfectly fine.

Or Dell have the 7th Generation I7's on there website, but not sure what performance is like? Are they Kaby Lake processors?

I think it's near optimal for FM, but you pay for 8GB of RAM more than you would ever need (But as RAM isn't very expensive these days, it's not a biggie). Apart from that it's very good - I can't speak for value though - as I'm not in the UK, I don't really know  if that is a good price for what you get or not, and/or if you can get similar for a better price elsewhere.

As for those Dell's: Yes, they are Kaby Lake's, but they are also the "u" versions - ultra low voltage - of the Core i5/i7 processors, and they won't be anywhere near as powerful as the "proper" i5's or i7's .... The "proper" Kaby Lake's hasn't arrived yet - and from what I'm reading, the performance gain from the Skylake's will be really minimal. But they will most probably be needing a tiny bit less electrical power to operate at a similar performance as the Skylake's.

I ammended my post above. The "proper" Kaby Lake i5/i7's are coming,  but are they worth holding out for? In my opinion; no. Just get a Skylake Core i7 6700HQ now if you need a laptop now. The Kaby Lake Core i7 7700HQ (if that is what it will be called) will probably have a tiny bit more performance than a 6700HQ, and use a tiny bit less electrical power while doing it. But most probably not enough that you will feel that you've been "cheated" because you didn't wait for it.

I have a powerful PC at home (xeon) but I need to get a new laptop for work, and I would like to be able to play a bit of FM on it.

My main requirements are something small and portable as I will often be carrying it around. I am considering something like:

Dell XPS 13 ( i7-7500U (4MB Cache, up to 3.5 GHz) intel graphics

Macbook Pro 13"  (2.7ghz dual core i5, intel graphics ) prob soon to be updated

Surface Pro

Does anyone have any experience playing FM on one of these? It is not a dealbreaker for me, I just want to know what to expect.

Okay, looking for some potential upgrade suggestions.

Back in 2011, I built a gaming rig. Solid but not outstanding for the time - i5 2500K, Radeon HD 6950 card, 8 GB RAM. It has served me well. I mostly play FM on it, as well as games like Farming Simulator and Euro/American Truck Simulator. I've done some MMORPGs but generally not my thing. Anyway, its being having some booting issues and refused to start last week - its in the shop right now and I'm pretty sure its a power supply issue. I have every intent of just getting a replacement power supply but I've started to consider some upgrades.  It still runs FM16 fine, with about 25 leagues loaded on the full version but it does start to slow after a couple years in game.

I had to replace a cheap laptop last year and talked myself into an MSI GE72 Apache Pro. Specs are i7-5700HQ (2.7), 12 GB RAM, GTX 960M. It runs FM full fat pretty well but definitely feels slower if I load up as many leagues. Plus I find I don't like playing FM quite as much on the laptop. so I have a pretty killer laptop for surfing the web, playing NetFlix, and playing TEW lol

In regard to upgrading the desktop, I realize I will need to upgrade the mobo and RAM (DDR3 to DDR4), and it would only make sense to upgrade the video card too. Just probably can't afford to do everything at once. So going with a processor like a i5-6600K with a decent (not too fancy) mobo and 16 GB of RAM will set me back around $500 Canadian. If did that around Christmas and waited a few months to do a video card upgrade. So I'd stick with the old HD6950 for a few months and then get something like a GTX 1060 or 1070...

So I'm just curious how much of a performance upgrade I would actually see over the existing built (with i5-2500K) and the laptop...?

Link to post

Honestly..  in real world performance... not that much of an upgrade from a 2500k to a 6600k without overclocking the 6600k... in fact, weirdly, in some cases, the 2500k will be better..

Of course once you factor in the rest of the upgrades you will of course see a decent push...but it would still be fairly the same for FM for instance imo.

My laptop isn't going to last much longer so I'm looking for a new one. All I will be doing on it is watching videos (youtube / netflix) , playing FM and maybe play some older games like Skyrim. Ideally I'd like to pay around £500-£650.  For FM I'd like to have lots of leagues (more than 20) loaded with a large DB. I usually play 2D but I'd like to move over to 3D.

Would these do the trick? Or is there anything out there better in my price range.

Right, need a new PC. Could somebody please advise on the following HP Desktop

I play with around 7 or 8 countries loaded, ideally. Although sometimes more. I have opted for a PC with no dedicated Graphics Card (although I think the processor has one built in, will need a PC Guru to advise though) purely on the basis that I do not need one. I play absolute 2D and Graphics on low. It is not worth the extra money for me.

Here is the SPEC.

Type HP Desktop

Operating system Windows 10 (64-bit)

SPECIFICATION

Processor - AMD A10-7800 Processor

- Quad-core

- 3.5 GHz / 3.9 GHz with TurboBoost

- 4 MB cache

Memory (RAM) 16 GB DDR3

Storage 256 GB SSD & 1 TB HDD

Hmmm.... thanks Welshace. I'll have to think on whether I want to drop what it will end up costing in total - around $800 C. I don't know that a new video card will make a massive difference for FM either.

Can the specs for the follwoing notebook play FM 17? Does the graphics card matter ? If so how many leagues could it run reasonably well. thanks

Your first step, if you don't recognise the cpu off hand is to google and research...

The one you posted is normally associated with very small form notebook laptops that don't have the space for coolers.

It's also designed to not need a cooler as it's incredibly low powered.. so while it's boost function will take it into the realms of possibility to play fm on, it's not recommended at all imo.

Thanks. How about this one

Processor Intel ® Core ™ i5
Highest frequency 2.7GHz
Graphics card NVIDIA GeForce 940MX
discrete graphic
RAM 8GB RAM
SSD 256GB PCIe × 4 NVMe SSD + 1GB GDDR5

Should be better I guess. Thanks for your advice.

Very decent cpu that will easily play fm at your requirements and more.. decent 8gb ram, decent amount of HDD space too..

Or :

Slightly less great cpu (actually better in some cases)  but you get a nice SSD partition and a graphics card to go with it

OR:

http://www.medion.com/gb/shop/multimedia-laptops-medion-akoya-e6421-multitasking-laptop-30020298a1.html

Same cpu as the first one, with an SSD .. probably the middle ground between them both really.. and probably one I'd go for.

Hi,

haven't played much in recent years, but am looking to start again. Narrowed my search down to two laptops - could anyone recommend which would be better for FM?

ASUS F556uq, I7-6500U, 8 gb ddr 4 ram, geforce 940mx with 2 gb ddr 3, 512 gb ssd

or

Acer E5-575G-54ZH, i5-6200U, 16gb ram ddr 4 ram, geforce GTX950M with 2 gb ddr 5, 96 gb ssd + 2 tb 5400 rpm hdd

Both come in roughly at the same price and will be used for allround use + playing FM.

Any advice greatly appreciated - thanks!
