Thanks Smurph, I'm also from Ireland :)

Sorry I was trying to say how I'd prefer a chromebook but that this might not be possible. I actually read that article so stop looking at chromebooks but had alright started writing my comment and forgot to edit!

Thanks again for your assistance. Fair play to you and the other lads for providing some much in depth info

You guys have a lot of patience!

Hi I enjoy playing football manager and I now have the funds to build a good computer, I am after some advice with the following:

How many cpu cores can football manager use?

*was thinking of an intel i7-6950X 10 core cpu, however the price puts me off purchasing does it offer any advantage over a quad core i7 to my football manager game?

maximum ram used?

*Does this make much difference should i get large amounts like 64gb? or will settling for 16gb be okay? Last I looked football manager was limited is this still the case?

Graphics Card?

*The new gtx1080 cards look amazing and was thinking about purchasing for future VR gaming however will this offer an advantage in football manager or should I settle for a different card and forget about VR altogether to keep cost down?

Motherboard?

*I was looking at the Asus ROG Rampage V Edition 10 Socket 2011-v3 8-Channel HD Audio Extended ATX Motherboard if i was to go expensive with the I7-6950x but if you lot recommend downgrading my potential rig what motherboard will be good?

All I want to do is be able to load all players and whizz through without the painfully slow loading times, ideally can I load all leagues and achieve this too?

I'd be tempted by the 6850K to be honest.

Get a M2 SSD and a larger backup drive in ssd.

RAM - anything 8gb above will be good. If you get 16gb it will be plenty. But if you have the budget to go higher then why not?

Graphics Card - the GTX1080 is a bit overkill for FM - but if not why not.

yeah know the graphics would be overkill but spending that much on a cpu I may as well install a 4k and vr ready card to justify the expense

Q1-2017 will be available Kaby Lake CPUs, which are quad core. It is not expected a huge boost of performance from Skylake CPUs though. 6850 is a different architecture and in the end it's gonna be much more expensive since you'll need a X99 mobo. I doubt that FM is actually using more than 4 cores, maybe a good Skylake even if cheaper would make process faster since on single core calculations it's faster.

My suggestion is to get Z-170 and 6700K, already available and cheaper than Xeon (and performing great). For the rest 16GB and a 960 GPU are more than enough to play FM at maximum details.

Okay, thanks to everyone for their advice earlier on in this thread. Ive been looking around and found this one on Amazon too, I get paid on Friday so thats when I will be ordering it, this one sounds good to me however I may be wrong as Im not a technical lad when it comes to laptops!

Newly Refurbished HP ProBook 6450b Internet Ready Laptop computer. Wireless enabled - Intel Core i5 2.4Ghz M520 processor - 4Gb memory - 320Gb hard disk - DVDRW - 14" Screen - Webcam - Windows 7 Pro installed

That processor is about 6 years old, and I'd imagine the computer itself is about that old.

I think it would run FM ok. However, if it doesn't run it ok you could always return it.

Is it ok that I bump this thread back up? It was lost when the forum changed over and it's an important thread given the amount of replies.

I reported the thread was broken when the forum changed and it seems to be fixed now. Thanks for fixing.

Bump.

Hey guys...

So my existing laptop died mid-FM yesterday - totally switched off. It's back on again now, but given it's age, the fact it burns to touch the bottom of it when the CPU is pushing 100% and sounds louder than a plane taking off, I'm not going to try FM again.

I've a budget of £500 and I'd like the best I can have - for 3D, half a dozen or so leagues, big database - I'll go just over it for value, and I don't mind a refurbished one.

Thanks!

(Edit: I've had another look through, and was wondering which of these would be recommended the most - or is there a better option?)

Good bump Smurf as i have a question to ask!

Currently play FM on my 2013 Macbook Pro (Intel Core i5 duo core, 2.6ghz, 8gb ram). Love the laptop, but every time i go to play FM it goes scorching hot within about 5 mins and the fans just overboard and are so unbearably loud.

So my question is this, Welshace posted this laptop a few pages back: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/N551VW-FW238T-ASUS-N551VW-FW238T_1829315.html. Would this be a lot better for playing FM on? FM, OOTP 17 and Rimworld to be precise, as those other two games i will be buying soon. My main two categories are how well they would play the games (like a nice big database on FM) and the amount of heat it would pour out while playing. Read a few reviews of people saying it doesn't get hot at all due to good vents, and some reviews saying the opposite, which is helpful!

I have my birthday coming up shortly and will have around £350-450 to spend, would much rather order online due to assistants in store tend to drift you away from the product you want onto a more expensive one, anyway Ye I have around £350-450 to spend and I'm looking for a laptop that will run football manager smoothly, 3D isn't a preference I'm madly considering but if available then I would like it. I'm also in sixth form so The laptop would be used for coursework also!

That's more than good enough.

However, why not just get a laptop cooler for your Mac? You can get a fan one or you get a mat.

Have a bit of research and think about it.

Thanks for the answer mate.

These are defo are option. I'm not literally just changing laptops because of the heat and noise, i want to play a few more games i've seen on steam but some need higher specs than i have at the moment, and are also windows only, so just debating changing for that reason.

Not sure i can be bothered to go through the hassle of selling my Mac though really!

EDIT: actually, a couple of though fans look really good and apparently run with almost no noise and have universally good reviews, might go for one of them. Thanks again Smurf.

It's going to be dependent on how many leagues you run. If you run 1 league and nation mostly with a small database then mostly any laptop would be smooth.

Either of these

Not sure i can be bothered to go through the hassle of selling my Mac though really! The second link you've sent looks good cooling wise, i like the idea of no more noise, just something that improves airflow going away from the Mac.

If you're going for gaming then I recommend PC Specialist and skip all that bloatware that comes loaded on laptops.

Afternoon guys, first post on here but an avid reader!

I'm looking for a laptop at max £650.

Preferably with i5 processor, 8gb RAM, SSD hard drive. Graphics wise I'm not too bothered as I prefer the old school 2d look during FM matches.

Would also like it to be compact (have seen a couple of 13" laptops).

Any help would be appreciated!

Cheers for that mate, haven't found a laptop that powerful within my budget, especially as it's running an i7.

Never used Lenovo before how do they compare to the better laptop manufacturers?

On that note, who would you say make the best laptops?

Out of these 2 laptops what would I get out of them? How many leagues can I run? could I have 3D? Would there be any lag?

Both are almost identical.

As for the queries - it's ambiguous, in theory you can run all leagues and all nations and maximum database on any computer, but the lower the specs the worse the speed and performance.

They both have an integrated graphics card - so they don't have a dedicated one - and with the integrated the performance for 3D would be best on low quality.

Decided to upgrade my PC to the following specs:

CPU: Intel i7-6700K
MB: Asus Z170M-PLUS or Gigabyte GA-Z170M-D3H
RAM: 16GB DDR4 memory
HDD1 (OS): 2 xSSD (RAID 1)
HDD2 (DATA): 2 x SSD Hybrid (RAID 1)

Still looking for a new case, will go for a mATX case this time. I have a full Lian-Li tower now but I no longer need something so large. Any suggestions?

I took my laptop apart today, followed an online tutorial as I wasn't familiar with the Dell models for disassembling. Was a bit tricky with the keyboard but mostly all good.

The amount of dust build up in the fan was shocking. I should never have let it get like that. But I did.

Anyway. the difference in the noise, performance, etc. of the laptop playing FM is HUGE!

Just thought I'd share the success story. As I was about to buy a new laptop for over 2K - but today the car broke down and there's no return, so I bought a new car instead... new computer may wait.

Afternoon guys,

I've narrowed it down to these two laptops, which would you guys recommend the most?

1. http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/80TK001BUK-Lenovo-IdeaPad-510s_1958411.html (thanks Smurf)

2. http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/UX301LA-DE176T-ASUS-Zenbook-UX301LA-DE176T_1842513.html

Obviously the Lenovo has better specs, but the I've read good reviews about the Asus which is also thinner.

Let me know what you think, cheers.

Got a feeling this is going to be the next step i need to do on my Mac, it's probably due a good service right about now.

Would let Apple do it but i imagine i'll need a small loan to cover it...

Hi,

I used to have a laptop Acer Aspire E5-571-304M which ran FM very well for me, 3D and fast processing (at least what I term fast). Unfortunately this broke so I went and bought and Acer Aspire ES1-531-P5SA thinking this was an upgrade. Unfortunately this laptop runs Football Manager exceptionally slow, taking me a very long time to run even a match, and I can walk away from the laptop going from one day to the next even if I really limit my leagues.

Can someone offer me advice if the laptop I have bought is worse for FM than the old one or if its something else wrong. Also can someone please recommend an Acer laptop which will run FM slightly better than the original (I say it needs to be Acer cause I have a lot of spare parts (cables and batteries etc) which I would like not to waste). Please keep the price as cheap as possible as I only have limited money and want to spend as small amount as possible

Depends on what the specs are - can you post both computers in the order of

CPU

RAM

Graphics Card

In terms of a new computer

What is your budget?

What are your expectations from FM: 3D, long career save, fast day to day, etc.?

Computer 1:  CPU - Core i3-4005U,   RAM: 4GB  Graphics Card: Intel HD Graphics, Share

Computer 2:  CPU  Intel® Pentium® Processor N3700,  RAM: 4GB  Graphics Card: Unsure

Should computer 1 really be so much faster than computer 2?

New Computer: Ideally Acer Laptop.  Like 3D, career save up to 10 years, as fast as possible day to day.

Budget: As low as possible seeing as I already bought a new laptop, max price approx £300

I'm surprised that it's that much slower - not really sure why it's all that slower.

My only guess would be that your original computer didn't get too hot when playing so it could play without being throttled. Whereas your new computer is probably getting hot and causing the processor to go slower to prevent overheating/damage.

Try a laptop cooler.

Might also be a good idea to see if the vents are blocked with dust.

£300 is a bit of an ask. Looking through some clearance items for you I can find this http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/acer-aspire-e5-573g-core-i5-4210u-4gb-1tb-geforce-920m-2gb-15.6-inch-window-nx.mvmek.011/version.asp

It's a bit over your price range.

All I can suggest is perhaps saving a bit more and getting something that has longevity rather than a short term solution that requires further investment sooner rather than later.

Thanks for your help, I too was surprised, the old one ran FM so well, but this one is unusably slow and has been since i bought it. Which is more important for the day to day speed, and match speed, ram or processor .  Just wondering so if i can save up a bit more I can see whteher i should be going for an i5 processor or  more ram

Also should say FM itself recognizes the new one as significantly worse. drops it to half a star performance with only one countries leagues loaded
