The All New FMCU Quiz! (And Scandinavian Music Thread)

I think I'll have to sign up for hosting another round, delta, so I can throw in a couple of more Norwegian questions.. (No, not about Abba. They're not Norwegian, and they're crap anyway, if you want really good Swedish music, Roxette, Europe, Gyllene Tider, Broder Daniel, Hoola Bandoola Band, Ebba Grön, that's more like it (stay away from Ace of Base!), but of course, Norwegian music beats Swedish any day - the ESC doesn't really count!)

As for music, and potentially another round... I happen to like Ace of Base, and I'm a massive Eurodance fan who also loves the ESC ;)

I was wondering about what to do when everyone had done a a round. In the past we did a set number of rounds and stopped but I've got another round in my head and was wondering about potentially repeating the cycle if other people wanted to set a round again, so it's interesting to hear that other people might be.

Finland's got Leningrad Cowboys, Hanoi Rocks, HIM and The Rasmus.

Oh, and Darude.. (not!)

and Children of Bodom...

btw, while reading all quizes I could rival being close to 0 as I'm non-brit (except for geographic and historical questions). Anyway in quiz 2 there's one half wrong answer... there're 2 Christmas Islands ... one is on Pacific Ocean. :)

I'm in for that. I have so many more parochial English based questions I can ask...

I've been to a Roxette gig but would really like to see Lene Marlin, love her music and have all her albums.:)

Rather frustratingly I've found out that one of my answers is wrong. I knew the final two chancellors before Hitler but not the order and a book on Germany I'm just finishing off happened to throw up the fact that I went for the wrong one. Ah well.

Just to derail the thread even further (I don't know if it's even possible with this particular thread): In the Nordic countries, we generally don't use the term Scandinavia anyway. The more common term here is Norden ("The North") which covers Finland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland as well as DEN-NOR-SWE.

But what do I know - Ireland is one of the Home Nations, right? ;)

Anyway, as for Danish music: For some reason only the worst crap tends to become successful outside Denmark (i.e. AQUA). I am glad to hear that D.A.D. are known in Norway as well, though. I thought you guys only listened to traditional folk music or death metal. Or both...

Aqua definitely have better songs than 'Barbie Girl'. Ditto with Eiffel 65 and 'Blue' though they're Italian and I genuinely love that song anyway. It's still pretty cheesy Europop/Eurodance but I do really enjoy silly, cheesy, fun things like that. I am a massive fan of Power Rangers and similar shows after all. Doctor Who and a lot of other sci-fi can qualify as well. I'm certainly learning quite a bit about the Nordic countries in this thread.

But I shall like to throw my hat in the ring for bringing a round of questions.

Or as I like to call it bringing the brain pain :)

Right back to quiz matters. I was wondering about inviting dllu in for a round anyway even if he hadn't put himself forward given his feedback on the rounds so far which takes it up to 10. I was going to duplicate it to take it up to 20 rounds (for the sake of having some sort of structure) but since I doubt everyone will want to do a second round you can do 11 and people can opt in to doing another round. I'm still set on stopping after 20 since people could well tire of it by that point but it looks like lots of you are enjoying too much to stop in the next few weeks.

And back off quiz matters... I've just remembered about Pellek. He's a Norwegian singer (though specifically an internet star I think) who does all sorts of covers, usually rock/metal versions, of tv theme tunes (I first heard of him when he did a medley all all the PR theme songs) and other songs (including quite a bit of disney). That includes a metal version of Barbie Girl by the way.

Turn back time :)

and I don't think A-ha have even been mentioned yet.

Probably because they're actually good, haha.

And i loved singing Barbie Girl in a Karaoke, you guys should do the same.

Cheers,

Bitner

10 hockey Q's? I'm in!

In fact, I can easily put together one round of hockey Q's, one of music Q's (if it ain't rock music, it ain't music :brock:), and then a couple of rounds of geography. Throw in a few football ones as well, and I'll host another 8-10 rounds.. Ok, I guess I could mash it up a bit..

I confirmed in post 80 that I can do round 10. I have already written my questions (though may change one yet)

Happy to go on the list for another round, but think we should avoid "theme" rounds, as they're frustrating for those who know nothing about the subject in question (in my case Ice Hockey, Europop etc)

Chuck in 1 or 2 "specialist subject" Questions if you like, but not all 10

Either that, or my next round'll be on the novels of Simon Kernick ;)

At the risk of being a pain in the rear, I would very much like to see a source on this...

Sorry to say, but I can't find any sources to this either.

The Stockton wikipedia page lists a number of films which where shot there, and Blade Runner is not on the list.

More so, the following links lists several locations for where Blade Runner were filmed, and Stockton isn't mentioned in any of them.

http://www.movie-locations.com/movies/b/bladerun.html#.VremSFjhChc

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083658/locations

https://moviemaps.org/movies/2h

However, Los Angeles are mentioned for most of the scenes, which at least is in the same state as Stockton (yes, LA is SoCal, while Stockton is in the Bay Area, but still).

If a source for the Stockton answer can be provided, I'm more than happy to live with that.

Being a REALLY anal BR fan, the opening sequence was filmed in a hangar. It's a model..

"The Hades landscape in the opening shot was filmed using forced perspective. The miniature itself was only 13 feet deep and 18 feet wide. Almost seven miles of fiber optics and over 2000 lights were needed to illuminate it."

Sorry :(

And where were this hangar located?

And "Teeside"/"Stockton", does that refer to Stockton, San Joaquin County, California, USA, or Stockton-on-Tees, Durham County (or North Yorkshire County), England, UK? I assumed the former, as I'm sorry to say, I haven't heard of Stockton, UK, but I knew of Stockton, US. But reading about Stockton, UK, I can see that Ridley Scott (and his younger brother Tony), director of Blade Runner, lived in Stockton, UK, as a child, and that - I quote - "After the Second World War, the Scott family moved back to their native North East, eventually settling on Greens Beck Road in Hartburn, County Durham, whose industrial landscape would later inspire similar scenes in Blade Runner." (link).

Then, when reading more, I followed the links, and found this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/tees/content/articles/2009/03/30/tees_tf_blade_runner_feature.shtml. Sorry to say, but this really negates the answer of "Stockton/Teesside", and makes Hollywood/Los Angeles, CA, USA the right answer.. :(

My answer to the question was 'in a hangar'

Yes, sorry. It was based on the Stockton skyline but was not filmed in Stockton. Turns out the one question I didn't research to check coz I believed what my Media teacher had told me fifteen years ago was a bad decision.

Have an extra point then Deisler. I will update the main table accordingly.

Since most of the film were filmed in LA (Hollywood is in LA), then it would be safe to assume this hangar is in LA as well, which would make "Los Angeles" a valid answer, right? Thus, those who answered "Los Angeles" should also get a point, right?

Sorry for b!***!n' 'bout this, but I believe the hanger in question were at the Van Nuys Airport, which is within the city limits of LA.. (I really want my point :p :p :p)

https://www.google.no/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=where+is+the+hangar+used+in+the+opening+sequence+of+Blade+Runner+located - The 5th link, Douglas Trumbull, as you can see on the google page, it says "(...) California, and inside an airplane hangar at the Van Nuys airport in the San Fernando Valley." - However, I cannot find this exact sentence when I click the link, so I cannot provide conclusive evidence, only "circumstantial" as they would say on "Columbo" or "CSI"..
