Even John Henry said clearly there was a clause but because he felt contracts were useless he decided not to sell? Should Arsenal have wasted 6 months going to court? Then Gerrard convinced Suarez to stay anyway. What a weird thing to bash the club on as Liverpool had no intention to sell him to us.

Sorry, we should have offered £1m more than the asking price why exactly?

Adding an extra £1 is insulting. If we had a release clause for bids over £30M for Cesc and Barcelona offered £30M+£1 we'd rightfully think they were smug *****.

If we'd offered enough money we'd have got Suarez. We had the money so there was no excuse not to go for it. As someone else said though we're not aggressive in the transfer market we just take advantage of situations that randomly pop up like Ozil, Alexis and Cech.

If its a proper release clause there is nothing a club should be able to do about it. Id happily pay just £1 over to talk to the player and then tell him and his agent the extra £10m saved will go on their wages/agents fee. That should be enough to turn the players head.

With Suarez I feel he would have ended up at Barca regardless of what we bid.

Not in 2013. Suarez didn't yet have his best season, and Barcelona hadn't put together the money to acquire him yet.

I think the main barrier to us getting Suarez was that we weren't a big enough lure for him. If it had been Barcelona calling he may have kicked up more of a fuss when his release clause was met and demanded that Liverpool let him go. If his intention was to join one of the mega clubs he may have felt that joining Arsenal would hinder that move and staying put at Liverpool was the best choice at that time.

It would have been great to have got him but that is also speaking from hindsight as none of us knew quite how devastating he would be in the season that followed.

True, it would have been difficult. We would have had to throw silly money at him, which would still be worth it.

While it is true that we had no idea he was going to have the season he did in 13/14, his past record was enough. He was already a 20+ league goal striker, that brought way more than just goals. Been Liverpool's top scorer and best player. Already part of the PFA team of the year in 12/13. I mean, I became his fan when I saw his Copa America 2011 performance. This guy was performing at a high level for years before he reached new heights in 13/14.

That tweet shown towards the end "Specialist in Arsenal" is brilliant :D

Also, did ajw just dismiss Higuian and say he'd be happy to go into next season with Danny Welbeck as plan A? Arsene Wenger in disguise?!

No, to be fair, he meant he'd like a better striker, but does believe there is any available (Higuain dismissed as a bad match) so Welbeck is the best we can have. He would rather us focus on acquiring players in positions where better players are available.

Lukaku 0-1 Welbeck

While I'm a fan of Welbeck too, hardly fair to compare when their teams are setup completely differently.

That said, Welbeck played great today, especially that first half! Goal was succulent!

I thought we played well, possibly best I've seen us since the United game at home. Bounced back from the Barca defeat better than I expected and the team looked promising, Welbeck and Iwobi especially looking good.

That being said take nothing away from how poor Everton were. That really is not the Everton we've come to expect in recent years especially at Goodison Park.

Looks like AJW and myself might have been right about Welbeck helping the team more than just finishing better...

Still remember when you guys were on the attack and Bellerin cut inside and lost the ball on the edge of the D. everton had quite a good break and I noticed who was challenging Barkley and it was Welbeck. He did not get the ball mind :D but he went past Iwobi, Bellerin, Ozil & Sanchez on the way back to his own defence to try and stop Barkley

I agree. He brings a lot of movement into our midfield. Not just his own movement, but the ability to move the ball around. If his partner could move like he can, we'd be very difficult to press, and our front 4 would not have to ever drop deep to pick up the ball.

He is a hero. Still amazed we have him.

Elneny is a very nice player he does all the things Coquelin doesn't (disciplined positioning, showing for the ball) and is safer than Cazorla deep (doesn't try to run it out and actually is a CM). Not sure if he is a long term starter for us though. If he is he has to be able to either play the DM role and then partner Ramsey or he needs to improve in the final third and we need to buy someone else who can pass from deep. Either way not Coquelin

Xhaka from Gladbach would have to be the number 1 priority as it seems he's a realistic option in that role. Probably see Elneny being converted to a DM, helps him and Ramsey have massive engines which would probably be a better option in the PL than in Europe.

Also linked with Jorginho from Napoli who is a no frills recycle possession kind of player.

Strong passer strong tackler with disciplinary problems, been sent off 3 times in 23 games in the bundesliga this season. Red cards aside he probably is the sort of player we are looking for!
