So - here's your trivia fix for the first two days of games:

Group A

South Africa vs Mexico (3.00pm)

Referee - Ravshan IRMATOV (UZB)

With an international career dating back to 2003, Ravshan Irmatov is the only Uzbek referee to have officiated in the finals of a FIFA tournament to date.

He has appeared three times at the FIFA U-17 World Cup (2003,2007 and 2009), once at the FIFA U-20 World Cup and also at the FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2008, where he not only handled the quarter-final meeting of Al Ahly and Pachuca, but also took charge of the Liga de Quito-Manchester United final - sending off Nemanja Vidic.

Away from the international football scene Irmatov is a school football instructor. For fitness he usually trains at the Chigatay stadium in Tashkent and, aside from football, he also swims and plays tennis.

Irmatov’s hobbies include football and when he was playing and injured in 1996 it was his Father, then a national referee, who suggested that Irmatov try refereeing instead which he did in 1997.

Uruguay vs France (7.30pm)

Referee - Yuichi NISHIMURA (JPN)

In 2008 Nishamura was the only non-African selected to participate in the African Cup of Nations in Ghana.

Nishimura had to stop a match between Al Karama (Syria) and Al Qadisiya (Kuwait) in Syria for twenty minutes when spectators started to throw stuff on the field after a smoke bomb had been detonated near the Al Karama bench.

Nishimura’s experience in foreign leagues includes the Poland League Premier Division in 2008.

When Nishimura was the coach of a youth team a referee once inflicted bad judgement on a match destroying the dreams of his players. This inspired Nishimura to become a referee in order to better serve correct rulings and always think of the players first.

Saturday, 12th June 2010

Group B

Argentina vs Nigeria (12.30pm)

Referee - Wolfgang STARK (GER)

In 2001 Stark officiated matches in the Japanese J-League for four months.

With regards to foreign leagues Stark has been involved in the J-League in Japan, Qatar-League, Saudi Arabian-league as well as some matches in leagues from Libya, Iran and Tunisia.

Selected to officiate at the World Cup U-20 2007 in Canada, Stark made a bit of a mess of it. His control of the Chile - Argentina Semi-Final match was woefully substandard and resulted in a diplomatic row between Chile and Canada.

Stark’s father was also a referee in the second Bundesliga and assistant referee in the top flight and this provided the impetus for Stark to become a referee. He was also inspired as a player as he wanted to see what it was like to be involved in football but in a different role, one which he subsequently preferred.

Group B

South Korea vs Greece (3.00pm)

Referee - Michael HESTER (NZL)

Although born in Australia, Michael Hester is actually a New Zealander.

He recently participated at the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 and the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2009 where he directed five matches including the semi-final between Colombia and Switzerland.

Hester has also handled a number of foreign leagues including the Australian A-League and a small number of English Premier League Reserves matches and local leagues in California, USA.

Outside of football, Hester is a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal New Zealand Navy.

Group C

England vs USA (7.30pm)

Referee - Carlos SIMON (BRA)

He has over 800 matches at top level to his name by now, including World Cup (2 in 2002 and 3 in 2006) and Olympic matches. Carlos Simón likes to read a lot and did a spell as a television reporter for a channel called TV Guaiaba. Now (2010) he is a full time referee.

Simon once had to be rescued by the riot police when spectators attacked him after he awarded a penalty to Mineiro. in a national quarter-final match against Botafogo.

I assume we can use this thread to discuss the performances of the various referees?

Group A

South Africa vs Mexico (3.00pm)

Referee - Ravshan IRMATOV (UZB)

I didn't think he did too bad tbh. was a little quick on the whistle at some points, but no real glaring errors or poor decisions. + marks for the linesman correctly calling the offside despite so many people not understanding why it was called.

overall I'd say 7.5/10

Maybe it was me being biased but I felt that in the RSA/MEX game the ref gave loads of soft decisions to RSA, but was only blowing up for major fouls on RSA. And that yellow in the FRA/URU game (the first for the guy who got sent off) was completely pointless.

He made a couple of silly calls but then tbf there isn't a game where a ref has got every single decision right. Maybe Lodeiro's first yellow was harsh but tbf that's a way to stamp it out of the game. He did do well though and I thought he took control of the game very well.

Yep let's praise them while we can, both did very well yesterday.

I'm echoing Cilly's trepidation about the presence of Martin Hansson though. The guy's made at least three high profile errors, and yet is still in the World Cup. Could be explosive.

I know the 02 WC was disastrous in terms of refs but this WC has been no better imo. Ridiculous yellows and reds for players diving all over the place and the worst part of it all was FIFA not taking any action against it post-match. I have lost count of the number of red cards (and yellows) being handed because of ridiculous play-acting and overreactions in addition to other crazy decisions

Webb is doing ok, he's ref'd the big nations, will he get a 1/4 final? I am assuming yes but if he doesn't get a 1/4 and gets a semi I assume that means no chance of the final for him as unlikely to ref a semi and then a final is he?

I guess the four referees most likely to ref the final will get the four quarter final spots and three other impressing referees will get the semi-finals and the third place game.

Webb is definitely a big candidate for the final, so I expect him to referee a quarter-final.

I expect the following referees for the quarter finals: Webb, Nishimura, Irmatov, Stark

The two semi-finals: Kassai, Archundia

Third Place Playoff: de Bleeckere

And the final will go to the referee who has had the best performance in the quarter finals.

(I don't think Stark is a candidate for the final, but the quarter final could be his last chance to referee a game, if Germany advances, so I guess they could give him a quarter final. If they don't, then Kassai could take his place, because he's also a nice candidate for the final...)

Irmatov again in the Argentina v Germany match. :thdn:

That guy sucks.

What? He has been the best referee at this World Cup so far.

So the four referees for the quarter finals are Irmatov, Nishimura, Batres and Benquerenca.

That makes Irmatov a big candidate for the final.

I guess the candidates for the semi-finals are Webb, de Bleeckere, Kassai and Archundia.

Maybe they will even give every referee one game (Webb final, de Bleeckere and Kassai semi-final, Archundia third place playoff) and don't bring back the quarter-final referees. We'll see...
