Welcome to the Khalifa International Stadium, where England and Japan have both won so far in this World Cup.

Netherlands

A win puts them through to the last 16 and in a great position to top the group. A draw and it's still all to play for with a game against Qatar to come. A loss and we have a fantastic final group day.

Ecuador

Pretty similar to Netherlands really although it's impossible for them to qualify today. Basically whatever happens they are to have a huge match against Senegal. Looked OK against Qatar but that was a bizarre match. We'll find out more today.

Koopmeiners a massive upgrade in midfield, Timber way better for RCB than De Ligt.

Still, the attack looks questionable and wouldn't surprise me if Ecuador gets a point.

Kudos on keeping starting every thread CJ.  Can't keep up :D

Maybe start all 4 at the beginning of the day, won't hurt anyone. :D

Not sure I'm expecting much here.  Cagey.  A point probably suits both teams.  The Dutch know they only have Qatar left to play after this.  And a draw is a great result for Ecuador... keeps them ahead of Senegal going into the final day so they only need to draw with Senegal and not beat them.

In fact, even a one-goal defeat for Ecuador is enough for them.  As long as they don't lose by two they would stay ahead of Senegal on GD.  So even if it's 1-0 to Netherlands with half an hour to go and Ecuador are actually losing... Ecuador probably still settle for it.  Rather than pushing to get back into the game and risk conceding another.

Can’t believe how much this stadium is being re-used. Grass is already cutting up badly on some of the pitches. This is the third game here already. Then it’s in use again on Sunday, and Tuesday, and next Thursday, and again a week tomorrow for the first R16 day. Seven games in thirteen days.

Letting them host with eight stadiums instead of the usual 10-12 is an absolute joke.

That's surely the biggest issue. :D

So it's pretty much Giuseppe Meazza. :brock:

This is probably the last single host World Cup and it's the most absurd :D I know it's complicated in that part of the world but should always have been spread between 2-3 countries, would have taken some of the heat off Qatar as well.

They surely wouldn't accept because it would make them look not rich enough.

And how would Saudi Arabia host in 2030, then?

Saudi Arabia at least would make a much better host than Qatar as at least they are not a small country. They would still have some of the same non-infrastructure issues as Qatar though.

why do players never (ok, rarely) get booked any more for stopping a quick free kick?  it's now totally standard practice to just stand right in front of the ball until your team is defensively regrouped, or (as then) to even tussle with the ball to stop them taking it (I realise on that occasion the ref wasn't actually ready either but still, the players intention was plain)

Yeah, it's one of the bigger time-wasters, should really be dealt with.

Same goes for players taking the ball after a throw in for the other team and delaying.

Any contact with the ball after the play is stopped or obstruction of the play being resumed should be an instant yellow.

People talk about Rooney being younger than Cristiano and looking like he's 50, but Sneijder is also younger than Cristiano.

Sorry to correct you (again ;)) but Sneijder is 38. Ronaldo is 37.
