This season we needed to do better. League Table - we were comfortable winners, allowing us to field the youngsters for the last few games. Community Shield - our first appearance in this was an impressive one. League Cup - third time lucky! FA Cup - after a long wait for a domestic cup, we picked up our second. UEFA Champions League - we did our best to throw this away, but we edged out United on penalties in another final. Squad - an insanely talented group of players. Transfers - I was busy as I continued our hunt for a goalscorer. Finances - a big loss, but we won't need to spend big next season. Key Player Profiles: Craig Austin - the backup striker I bought last season turned out to be quite good. Kacper Zalewski - good wingers make such a difference to my tactics. Mats Vandamme - our most valuable player. Here was the table going in: We had a very winnable game against Bournemouth, but it wouldn't matter if Forest could beat Leicester. At the same time, Brighton had a pretty easy game against a terrible Crystal Palace side. All three of us would be safe at different points in the game. Forest extended their advantage in the 9th minute of their game and Brighton scored in the 10th, briefly moving us to 19th. We would score in the 13th to move back into 18th temporarily, but conceded in the 20th. Forest would concede two minutes later, meaning that after 22 minutes it was Brighton in safety. This lasted only two minutes as we took our first step out of the drop zone with a 24th minute goal. Just before halftime, Forest re-took the lead over Leicester, so our locker room was a concerned and sad place to be. Our lead would be extended very early in the second half, and we quickly got good news from Nottingham as Leicester equalized in the 52nd minute. As long as Forest didn't retake the lead (and we didn't concede two) we'd be fine. We had to act cautiously late as Bournemouth grabbed one back in the 73rd minute, but there had been no news from Nottingham. Our game ended with no more goals and no more updates, but I found out when addressing the team that we actually would've been fine conceding one more. A late Leicester goal meant Forest finished on 34. Brighton had also collapsed earlier on, allowing two second half goals to finish 19th. Despite 24 losses,. we would be safe in the Premier League. We are in a bit of a strange spot now; we were groundsharing with Brighton this season while our new stadium was being built. Next year we will actually lose capacity, but money isn't really a problem since we are spending less on our entire team than many of the top teams are spending on single players. Our biggest issue will be players. We raided the loan and transfer lists looking for cheap players that would be willing to come here. What this means is that most of the guys we got aren't good enough if we want to be safer next year. We spent £12.5m to solve our GK issue, and it was well worth the money. Giancarlo Imparato had been Everton's backup GK and ended the year as our second highest rated player. He should be fine next year, so I won't be looking for goalkeepers. Our backup will be one of two academy players (haven't decided which one yet). We are also ok with one CM spot (Gert Seppik) and LM (Salvador); Antonio Lopes struggled a bit at LB will probably be given another season since he is young and can still improve. The three of them were all in our Championship squad, though. The only other transfer that should be in our team again next year was made on deadline day in January. We met the release clause of an 18 year old Danish CB who Liverpool and Inter were sniffing around. Brian Kure may not be good enough to play for those teams yet, but should be fine for us. This means we will need to improve: CB, RB, CM, RM, and possibly two ST (Isaac Beck was fine as a second striker, but his contract is up next summer and he's been whining). We are going to be given £40m again, but there is plenty of room in the wage budget to move around as well. This will be our chance to get some young, quality players as opposed to the older players we got just to keep us up this year. A last shoutout to Andrew Spence, who we loaned in from Arsenal and who finished 3rd in the league in goals. I doubt we'll be able to loan him again next year. G_D_K Posted January 19, 2021 Share Posted January 19, 2021 Season Review (Season Four, 2024-25) Table / Position Graph / Squad / Finances / Transfers / Manager Attributes / Manager Character / Facilities / Annual Injuries / Competitions / Reputation / Club Vision SUMMARY Season 4 was another solid, but unspectacular season for us in our first go at the Vanarma National League. A slow start ( 3 losses to open the season, followed by a draw and two wins, then 1 more point in the next 6 matches) left us in the relegation zone with 8 points in 12 matches. Then we hit a good run of form, seeing us run of a spell of 12 matches without a loss and and repositioning the team solidly mid-table. After a single loss against Fylde on boxing day, we ran off another 8 matches without a loss, pushing us to within 4 or 5 points off the playoff spots, but come mid-Februrary we once again ran against some of the top-tier teams and we dropped back to mid-table --- a spot we would pretty much occupy for the rest of the season. Callum Crook was still the player of the team, and while he dropped significantly in production in the move up to the VNL, his 15 league goals (17 total) was still god enough for joint 9th in the league (albeit 1/2 of the league leader -- Eastleigh's Ben House, who had 31 goals). He also accounted for nearly 1/3 of the team's league goals. His new left-side strike partner, Jaylan Wildbore contributed 7 goals, but most of those came in the last third of the season as he finally acclimated to the team and tactics---I have high hopes for him to improve in the coming season. 5 additional players each contributed 4 goals each, and a total of 18 players scored at least one goal. Defensively, we were okay, but need to improve (we finished 14th in goals conceded and clean sheets -- solid but unspectacular). Newcomer Zak Bradshaw (DC) was the top player, with an AvR of 6.87 (84% Headers Won, 76% tackles, and 73% passes) in his 16 appearances and was pretty much the lone standout Promotion / Playoffs No playoffs, though for a bit we seemed to be in contention, the drop in form in February kept us from making a real run in that direction. Cup Competitions The cup runs were very good this season, as we managed to steal a victory vs L1 Coventry (1-0 on one shot) in the FAC2R, which set us up for a very decent round 2 away vs Derby. We acquitted ourselves well, managing not to get totally annihilated in a 3-1 loss which cleared nearly 1/2 of our cash debt. Five different players got on the scoresheet (with Crook bagging 2 goals in the competitioni). The FAT likewise saw us exceed (low) expectations, as we made the 4th round after a 2-0 victory over Halesowen (with a further 2 players scoring in this competition), but we were undone in the 4th round by a Torquay United team who would go on to be relegated from the VNLS this season. Historical Best XI Fans Player of the Season Although he only had 17 goals, Callum Crook was still managed to win fan's choice for Player of the Year. Signing of the Season DC Matthew Moloney gave a solid effort with 32 appearances (1G, 1A, 2xPoM, and 6.65AvR) Young Player of the Season And, the Young player of the Year goes to....Crook again. Goal of the Season -- My Portuguese ALR Danilo Pereira finally showed some glimpses of the player I'd hoped for when I signed him last season grabbing a stunning goal. Preview Season 2 Maxwell Gard, (not my pick as top youth!) is a multi-role potential player that looks good enough to fill in immediately in a pinch. Whether he develops or not will be the deciding factor. Preview Season 3 John Evans -- a Center-back with potential. Need to get my Model-Citizen to mentor him a bit...and need coaches and facilities to actually improve players. Preview Season 4 Tyrone Cooper -- The best of the batch likely won't ever make the first team. Interestingly, I had a large amount of "outspoken, volatile, confrontational" players in this crop (and the HYoD is more media-friendly). I've got nearly a full squad returning, been given a £2K/wk wage boost (up to £8100/wk), and have a fairly solid squad. Will be looking at improving a little in defense and playmaking areas, and might start thinking about another striker in the event Crook can't compete as well at this level as at the previous (he's never been listed as the best striker in the squad --- he has just performed the best in my tactic -- he's only listed as CA "Good VNS N/S" and PA of "Leading N/S" -- so I need to look at the future. My previous chairman retired at the beginning of May, the new chairman took a £425K loan and wiped out all previous debts -- including the roughly £250K cash debt, leaving me a small positive bank balance --- but at the same time denied my request for my 2nd coaching badge, so it's already a rocky start with him! Hopefully a small attendance boost and another decent cup run will give us a positive balance at the end of the year, and maybe we can start looking toward upgrades. goonergez Posted January 20, 2021 Share Posted January 20, 2021 I've made the difficult decision to steer clear of this challenge for a bit now and try a few different things. I'll definitely be returning though at some point. I don't think I can ever feel as invested in a save as I do when taking on this challenge. I ended up growing frustrated of mediocrity and also that I couldn't get Cray Wanderers to pop up! At some point they will be my attempt. For the time being I will be keeping a keen eye on things though. There is some really good work going on in here, even if the thread is a little quiet. @CMU Chips must feel almost like completing the challenge to get a safety like that! @dafugesensational effort with the Met. Looking forward to when you complete a clean sweep. You've given a schooling in how to complete this challenge. @G_D_K a pretty damn good season there in my eyes! DazRTaylor Posted January 23, 2021 Share Posted January 23, 2021 End of Season Review Season 2021/22 Kings Langley League Table - A decent enough season, though we underperformed in patches and never really threatened automatic promotion. We finished the regular season with four straight wins to snatch third place on the last day, our highest position of the season. Play Offs - A comfortable two nil win at home to Havant & Waterlooville in the semi final set up a winner take all final, away to Gloucester City, for a place in the Vanarama National. Despite being the better side, it wasn't to be and we lost, one nil. League Fixtures 1 & 2 - Some weird losses, like the 5-0 home defeat to Maidstone United, meant we were never really in with a chance of winning the title. F. A. Cup - A fantastic competition for us as we reached the third round. Unfortunately, we didn't get a glamour tie, being paired at home to Championship outfit Luton Town, who beat us convincingly. F. A. Trophy - Another great cup run, reaching the semi final, before losing to Sutton United, who play in the league above, very narrowly, over two legs. Pre Season Friendlies - A tough pre season, with only three victories. Squad - We are very young and getting better. Squad Dynamics - As good I could hope for really. Transfers In 1 & 2 - I signed lots of new players, nearly all of them youngsters, as I revolutionised the squad. Transfers Out - Not enough left though. Some of the old guard are still here, sat in the reserves, drawing their wage. Youth Candidates - A very poor intake, with Callum Hayward supposedly being the pick of the players. Finances - Despite the cup run, we lost money over the course of the season and as a result, we are only just in the black. Key Players Euan Pollock - Our Player of the Year. The striker scored an impressive 36 goals in 54 appearances. Shaun Hobson - Our best defender. I expect more from him next season. Levi Laing - Hobson's partner at centre half. Suffered a serious injury halfway through the season. Arthur Read - Central midfielder who really should do better. Taye Ashby-Hammond - Signed just before the transfer window closed, the goalkeeper is too good for this level. Next Season Automatic promotion by winning the title. Anything else is failure. League Table - we took the lead in game 12 and never looked back. Community Shield - a win to kick off the season. UEFA Super Cup - our hopes of a clean sweep were dashed early on. FIFA Club World Cup - this came as a surprise at the end of last season. League Cup - we made hard work of the early rounds. FA Cup - we met tough opposition early on. UEFA Champions League - we looked unbeatable, until the final. Squad - I'm not really sure if I can improve on this. Transfers - I changed a striker for a huge profit. Finances - minted. Key Player Profiles: Craig Austin - it's been a while since I had a striker like this. Xabier Martínez - he was expected to be the main striker, but provided good backup instead. Kacper Zalewski - our most valuable player. Faramir Posted January 23, 2021 Share Posted January 23, 2021 Needham Market- Season 10 (2030-31) 4th Season Premier Our only mid-season add was a loan of 18 year old Borussia Dortmund Midfielder Michael Heinz. Eugene Rooney is a brilliant winger and has been playing so again this season- when he isn't hurt. He is hurt again and missing extended time, so we needed a depth Leftwinger that we didn't have to register for League play and Heinz was the best we could find. He isn't bad, just not up to the level of loanee Emmanuel Arthur, who will get the brunt of the time. We did finally call up our 18 year old Portugese SC prodigy Balarmino, as he had clearly outgrown the Under-23s with his rampant scoring. We had signed him off of SLB youth side for 1.1 Million and he is about ready to take his place in our forward rotation. We will try to spot him starts as needed down the stretch. Our Cup run wasn't great after winning the Euro Super Cup. We were upset by Norwich 1-0 on a penalty in Carabao Cup. Liverpool knocked us out of the FA Cup with a 4-2 loss at Anfield in the Quarter-Finals. Our Champions Cup bid to repeat ended when Manchester United broomed us out in the Quarter-Finals. We got our revenge on ManU when we ravaged them 5-2 at our new stadium with Luca Francavilla going off and scoring all five goals against them to clinch the Premier title. We missed out on our Invincibles season when we lost to Arsenal 2-1 at Emirates in March- the only loss in League play for us. Leading us was our 1-2 punch up front as Wonderkid Luca Francavilla scored 32 goals (29 League) and had two 5-goal matches in the second half of the season. Transfers In - More young players, together with some experienced heads, came in and this players proved their worth. Transfers Out - I sold a few players with sell on clauses to try and balance the books. Youth Candidates - Another woeful intake, with Daniel Fearn supposedly being the pick of the bunch. Finances - We are in the red and losing money. I need one of my sell on clauses to bear fruit. Key Players Taye Ashby-Hammond - Another fine season from the goalkeeper. Alfie Gilchrist - Teenage central defender who plays with maturity beyond his years. Martell Taylor-Crossdale - Signed on a free transfer, the striker was brilliant scoring 32 goals in 44 appearances. Marcel Lavinier - Playing at right back, the Portuguese 22 year old had a fine campaign. Khalon Haysman - Defensive midfielder who dictated many games this year. Next Season A play off spot should be achievable I think. CMU Chips Posted January 24, 2021 Share Posted January 24, 2021 Season 16 - Premier League - 13th Never a real threat of relegation, but also never more than mid-table (we were between 9th and 15th for the entirety of the season). If I had to describe this season in one word, it would be: forgettable. Our defending is still miserable; our GK led our team in average rating despite 2 clean sheets all year. Our summer CB signing Álvaro played well, with a 6.92 average rating. We paid £21m to activate his release clause from Crystal Palace. The other big money signings did well too; Fábian Rodríguez contributed 11 goals and 7 assists after we spent £13.25m, and our best signing of the year, Igor Pimenov, gave us 27 goals and 7 assists for £12m. Other transfers were frees or loans until January when I brought in three full backs to try to fix our defending problems (it didn't help). The best of these is Jhonatan Ratti, who some big clubs were sniffing around. Maybe he can develop into a starter by next year. We nearly sold academy prospect Luca Godden for huge cash (27.5m+50% profit) but he has huge potential and is English so I decided against it. He broke his leg the next day. He's not Premier League quality yet, but he's also just 18 years old. The most notable thing this season is the end of an era. After 14 years, 519 league appearances and 296 league goals, Scott Wilson has decided to take on a new challenge and will be heading to South Korea. He was able to get a brace during his farewell tour in the Prem, and yet somehow isn't listed with me in club legends (a player I had for just 297 appearances is though). Going into next season we need: LB, RB, RM. We are also due for a tactical re-assessment to see if there is anything we can do to relieve some of the pressure on our GK. We're right up against the foreign limit from Brexit, but we'll be gaining 1 spot there after our current loans expire. It's tough though, with the restrictions other clubs are very wary of selling English players. We're starting to get the facilities to develop our own players, so I'm hoping to see some start coming into the first team. This seasons Dafuges Challenge has brought my unprecedented success. I assume now that my small club stature will catch up to me as a attempt to progress as a championship club, already i have had a few really good players that would improve my team decline due to the fact i cannot offer high enough wages to entice them to join. Non the less i hope to at least stay in the championship this year Wish me luck Top goal scorer this year was a free transfer signing by the name of Jamie Soule who scored 19 league goals this season Had a decent run in the Papa Johns trophy and the Fa cup but just couldn't handle it against the big teams. We were always around fifth or sixth until the last month, when we went on an unbeaten six game run in April to secure the title on goal difference. League Fixtures 1 & 2 - Beating Yeovil Town home and away proved to be vital as we won the league title and secured promotion, on the last day of the season. F. A. Cup - There was no cup run this year, as we lost away to League One side Cambridge United in the second round. F. A. Trophy - We did enjoy a productive run in this competition, however, reaching the final before beating Leyton Orient on penalties to secure the league and cup double. Pre Season Friendlies - An excellent pre season campaign, with only two defeats. Squad - We are getting stronger, though the lack of depth in each wing position is a cause for concern. Squad Dynamics - Very good, as usual. Transfers In - The only incomings were either free transfers or loan deals. I always prioritise younger players, so these players will only get better. Transfers Out 1 & 2 - I raised over £400,000 in player sales to try and balance the books. Youth Candidates - Another dreadful intake, with Ben Hart apparently showing the most promise. Finances - We are in the black, though only just. This is despite the player sales listed above and regular cash injections from the board. Key Players Alfie Gilchrist - My key centre back. He was superb all year. Mazeed Ogungbo - This defender can play anywhere across the back four though I mainly used him at left back. Aled Brereton - Teenage Welsh defender who, like Ogungbo, can play across the back four. I primarily used him as Gilchrist's partner at centre back. Jamie Bowden - Probably the most vital player in the squad. Playing in the anchor role in midfield, if he plays well, we usually win. Romaine Mundle - Playing in central midfield, the twenty year old formed a terrific partnership with Bowden. Next Season Can we push for promotion again? League Fixtures 1, 2 & 3 - We were consistent throughout the season and never really had any long winless runs. F. A. Cup - We made it back to the third round and took Championship side Nottingham Forest to a replay before losing to them at home after extra time. Carabao Cup - A decent run, as we made it to the third round before losing at home to second tier outfit Barnsley. E. F. L. Trophy - We won our group with ease and made it to the quarter final, before losing on penalties to the Manchester United Under 23's. Pre Season Friendlies - A longer programme than normal though I was satisfied with our performaces, despite losing four matches. Squad - We have a young, dynamic squad that, if we can hold on to the players, are going places. Squad Dynamics - As good as it always is. Transfers In - I actually signed more players then this, though before the season ticked over. Here is the list of the rest of the players I signed in June 2024. Transfers Out - I raised £500,000 in fees to continue to balance the books. Youth Candidates - Another disappointing intake, though Stephen Byrne YP25A has signed a professional contract. Finances - A healthy balance, largely due to player sales, though it is dwindling. Key Players Mazeed Ogungbo - Another great season from the defender. Charlie Wiggett - The signing of the season. The central defender arrived on a free transfer from Chelsea and was exceptional. Dilan Markanday - Winger who plays on either the left or right hand side. Dion Rankine - Versatile player who I use at both right back and at right wing. His form was mixed, though I guess not having a settled position won't help him. Seco Camará - Signed at the start of the season when he was only 16 years old for a club record transfer fee of £60,000 from Barnet, he has a great future. Next Season My goal is a playoff place. That There Phil Posted January 29, 2021 Share Posted January 29, 2021 Save Introduction The Club Formed in 1874, Grantham Town - nicknamed, rather wonderfully, The Gingerbreads - have been a perennial fixture in the lower leagues ever since. Having spent the last 20 years bouncing between the 7th and 8th tiers of English football, their promotion to tier 6 and the National League North presents a new challenge for the club. The squad is seriously lacking in quality for this level, and will require major surgery if the club is to avoid an immediate relegation back to more familiar surroundings, presenting a significant challenge to any manager. To this end the Gingerbreads board have turned to former Sunday league journeyman Harry Wilder, looking past his lack of managerial experience and tasking him with guiding the team to safety and beyond. The Manager Named in honour of my two favourite football managers (Dave 'Harry' Bassett and Chris Wilder), Harry Wilder will look to add some Sheffield steel to a lightweight and rudderless Grantham squad, focussing on the determination, work ethic and teamwork demanded by both his namesakes. He will also be looking to replicate their preference for players from Britain and Ireland, making sure that any foreign players are standout stars rather than journeyman squad fillers - this should also help dealing with the new restrictions imposed as a consequence of Brexit as Wilder (hopefully) guides the team through the leagues. 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

League Fixtures 1, 2 & 3 - We were once again fairly consistent throughout the season. Five league wins from five in February set us up nicely for the home straight and we were unbeaten in our final fifteen league games. F. A. Cup - Our best cup run to date, as we made it through to the fourth round, before losing away to Tottenham Hotspur. We did make a lot of money from the tie, however. Carabao Cup - We only made it as far as the second round this year, before losing at home to second tier outfit Queens Park Rangers. E. F. L. Trophy - We once again topped our group and this year, we made it all the way to the final, where we played Fulham Under 23's. We dominated the final and were deserved winners as we lifted the trophy with a two nil victory. Pre Season Friendlies - An excellent pre season campaign, with only two losses. Squad - We are very young with a lot of potential. The players are getting better too. Squad Dynamics - Exceptional, which it always is. Transfers In & 2 - I signed a lot of youngsters, as usual though I smash the club transfer record, paying £1.5m for Jacob Shepherd. Transfers Out 1 & 2 - Quite a few departed including five players for seven figure fees. Youth Candidates - Our best intake to date, though that is not saying a lot. Jim McParland YP26A2 looks like the best of the bunch. Finances - Very good, largely down to player sales. Key Players Charlie Wiggett - Another cracking season from the central defender. Seco Camará - The teenage midfielder is now ready for a regular starting place. Omari Forsen - Signed on a free transfer from Manchester United, he can play on either wing. Sidnei Tavares - Signed as a backup, the midfielders form was so good he earned a regular starting spot. Luis Gerardo Padilla - Twenty year old Mexican left back signed on a free transfer who had an excellent first campaign. Next Season A safe mid table finish would be lovely. tremor Posted January 29, 2021 Share Posted January 29, 2021 Scarborough Athletic 2026-27 Season Review First season in the Premier League and it was a good season, a lot better than i feared it would be. We started with a pretty tough sequence of games, and looked like we were going to get overwhelmed every week, somehow we managed to pick up some early points, more through luck than judgement though. We shifted to a more direct 3 at the back system which seemed to stabilise us and we looked a bit more assured through the autumn. This also seemed to galvanise our team ethic and as our new signings bedded in we were gradually able to move back towards our more dynamic offensive play. We ended up finishing 7th, mostly through a lot of luck on the last day when we managed a win against Chelsea who had already qualified for the Champions league and Wolves who were ahead of us and everyone else around us lost. Cups were decent, but actually a real worry at times, the extra games put a huge pressure on my tiny squad and i ended up filling the benches with u18s. 7th in the Prem Semi-final FA Cup (gutted to get knocked out by Brentford who are a division lower... but we were missing about 8 key players) 3rd round of the Carabao Cup knocked out by Sheff United, unlucky to meet prem opposition so early Things going well at the club though, we're building a new ground, they have also accepted every suggestion of upgrade so far and I'm just about to complete my Pro License Season 2027-28 aims: Make a challenge for some silverware, solid mid-table finish, not be embarrassing in the Euro cup. Definitely need to sign a few new players though, our squad is way too thin. Priority is a new RB, at least 2 or 3 centre mids and a decent striker... I imagine i will have the same issue recruiting though, it seems our status is still too low to attract decent players so it's back to scrapping the cast-offs barrel... and waiting til the end of pre-seaon to make signings of desperate players... tbh that hasn't worked out too badly so far though £45mill and 222k spare wage budget will definitely help! League Table - we looked good for an unbeaten season until Liverpool ended it all. Community Shield - a narrow win over unlikely opposition. League Cup - an outstanding comeback won us the cup. FA Cup - we needed penalties to beat the side just above the relegation zone in the Championship. UEFA Champions League - it happened again. Squad - we have some outstanding players. Transfers - I signed the wrong striker last season as I blew all the profit I had previously made. Finances - a huge loss. Key Player Profiles: Craig Austin - top scorer again. Patrick Wembangomo - the £97m man. Kacper Zalewski - our most valuable player. Unfortunately, a home loss to Norwich City in our penultimate game ensured we narrowly missed out on a play off place. League Fixtures 1 & 2 - I am happy overall as this was our first season at this level. Some annoying losses here, though. F. A. Cup - Disappointing. We made it through to the fourth round, before losing to League One side Rotherham United on penalties, after a replay. Carabao Cup - Manchester United eliminated us at the third round stage, beating us 2-0 at home. Pre Season Friendlies - We started pre season poorly, losing three of our first four games but we found our form and went unbeaten for the remaining pre season games. Squad - We over achieved this season and I need to add more depth if I want to go up. Squad Dynamics - Same as always. Transfers In - I spent over £3m on reinforcements as we needed to strengthen. Transfers Out 1 & 2 - £7.5m was raised in player sales as I lost a few of my best youngsters. Youth Candidates - A good intake with Joel Gilder YP27A7 looking like quite a prospect. Finances - Very healthy, largely due to player sales. Key Players Jarrad Branthwaite - A free transfer signing, the centre back slotted into our defence easily. Marcus McMenamin - Teenage Northern Irish international goalkeeper who had a terrific campaign. Cost a bargain £225,000 from Glentoran. Oliver Tuckey - One of our most versatile players, he can play in five different positions. Jeffrey Mpisane - South African teenager who plays on the left wing. Joined in January from Mamalodi Sundowns for a transfer fee of £700,000. Kris Laws - After two seasons on loan at the club, we signed the defender permanently from Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer. Next Season We should be aiming for at least a play off place. That There Phil Posted February 1, 2021 Share Posted February 1, 2021 Grantham Town Season 2021/22 League Table - An unbelievable season, from being predicted to drop straight back down to the 7th tier, to beating odds-on favourites Gateshead to promotion at the first time of asking. The season quickly became a two horse race, and we swapped positions numerous times throughout the season, including 5 times in the last 12 matches. We went into the final day level on points, but with a 4 point better goal difference. We took the lead early in our game, but conceded an equaliser midway through the 2nd half, around the same time that Gateshead took the lead in their match. We couldn't find a winner, and it looked like we'd missed out on the championship, only for Gateshead to concede a late equaliser and hand us the title on goal difference! FA Cup - A disappointing performance, being knocked out by lower league opposition in the third qualifying round. The less said about this, the better! FA Trophy - If anything this was even worse, knocked out after a replay in the second round. At least this time it was by a team at the same level as us.Tactic - A 3-5-2 vertical tiki-taka based loosely around the current real life Sheffield united tactic. There are some pretty demanding roles for this level in there, leading to a few costly mistakes over the season, but I'm happy with how my players performed overall. Squad - It was all change here, I took just over 600 players on trial over the course of the season, working as hard as I could to upgrade on the terrible group of players that I inherited. Only 6 of the original squad remain, and of those only Nathan Dyer and Liam Hardy are regular starters. I'm still not happy with the options at GK and MC (DLP), and I never found a truly consistent goalscorer, but considering where we started, I'm very happy with where the squad is right now. Transfers - 16 signings in total, all improvements on the players they replaced. They're also all under the age of 24 and have room to grow, so I'm hoping that one or two of them can make the journey up the leagues with us. Finances - Despite spending nothing on transfers, and being well below the wage budget set by the board, we were steadily losing money throughout the whole season. With no cup run to refill the coffers we end the season slightly in the red. Manager Profile - I was pleased to complete my national C licence, and start work on my national B licence in the first season. The board seem eager to help with my development at the moment, so long may it continue!Key Players Nathan Dyer - The best player that I inherited kept his place at right wingback through the whole season. Despite some negatives in his coach report he was one of our most consistent players, rarely getting below a 7 and finishing the season with 3 goals, 10 assists and and average rating of 7.48 from 38 appearances. Loïc Hernandez - My first signing on a free after being released by Barnet, he was an absolute revelation at left wingback. He made 36 appearances, grabbing 5 goals and a whopping 16 assists, leaving him with the highest average rating in the squad at 7.56. De'marlio Brown-Sterling - Signed after being released by Bolton and being without a club for the whole of the previous season, he fitted right into the DLF(s) role. A slow start to the season made me question the wisdom of his signing, but he grew into the role as the season progressed, finishing as our top goalscorer with 13 and n average rating of 7.14 Season League Position Achievements Coaching badges ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2021/22 National League North 1st Promoted as champions National C Next Season Thinking that I wasn't going to be promoted this year, I foolishly gave lots of my new signings 2 year contracts, meaning that I'm going to be stuck with quite a few of them in the league above. Unfortunately, two defeats ended our chances and we finished in the play offs. Play Offs - Playing Watford in the semi final, we secured a narrow away win setting us up nicely for the return leg. An awful performance at home, resulted in a home defeat and penalties. We blew it. We lost 5-4 on spot kicks and stay in the Championship. League Fixtures 1 & 2 - We started like a train before settling down. We finished the season very strongly, though a home defeat to promotion rivals Bristol City proved key as we dropped from second to fourth and missed out on automatic promotion. F. A. Cup - We were very poor, as we lost at Brentford in a replay in the third round. Carabao Cup - A disappointing exit as we lost at home to Oxford United, from the league below, in the second round. Pre Season Friendlies - An excellent pre season campaign with the 7-2 hammering of Liverpool being the obvious highlight. Squad - We are very strong now and more than good enough for an automatic promotion place. Squad Dynamics - The same as usual. Transfers In - I broke my transfer record twice though still spent less than half of what I raised in player sales. Transfers Out 1 & 2 - Two big sales as offers were received that I just couldn't turn down. Youth Candidates - Wow. Just wow. A fantastic intake with an absolute beast. Owain McGivern YP28A15 is going to be a superstar. Finances - Very healthy indeed as I didn't spend all of the funds raised by the sales of Christian & Camará. Key Players Jarrad Branthwaite - Another stellar year from our centre back. Mohamed Abdel Galil - Signing a new goalkeeper was not on my priority list, but when this Egyptian international became available for just £1.5m, I had to sign him. He had a great season. Joseph Baadjies - South African international signed on a free transfer from Kaizer Chiefs, he can play anywhere across the back four. Marc Jurado - Spanish right back who played very well all season. Signed from Burnley for a bargain £2.5m. Aitor - Spanish striker signed on a free transfer from Barcelona. He had a decent first year in English football, scoring 19 goals in 44 appearances. Next Season Promotion. Anything less than the top two is failure. League Fixtures 1 & 2 - We started really slowly and were in thirteenth place after twelve games. We found our form somewhat F. A. Cup - A fabulous cup run saw the club reach their first ever cup final where we played Manchester City. We led at half time though an equaliser guaranteed extra time. No further goals ensured it went to penalties where we held our nerve and won. Carabao Cup - Another fantastic cup run, as we made it through to the semi final, before losing heavily to Liverpool, 6-1 on aggregate. Pre Season Friendlies - An almost perfect pre season, spoiled by Newcastle in our penultimate game. Squad - We are more than good enough to stay up. Some of our young players are outstanding. Squad Dynamics - As good as it always is. Transfers In 1 & 2 - I spent £70m as I made a real push for promotion. The transfer record was broken several times. Transfers Out 1 & 2 - Despite spending big, I still raised more in player sales than I spent as I trimmed the squad by selling a lot of fringe players. The offer of £30m, plus a 50% sell on clause, for Jeffrey Mpisane was just too good for me to refuse. Youth Candidates - Not as good a group as last season though it was still a reasonable intake. Mahdi Kassab YP29A22 is the best prospect this year. Finances - We are in the black, though largely due to cashing in over £24m worth of sell on clauses. With the Premier League finances coming next season, this will only get better. Key Players Mohamed Abdel Galil - The Egyptian international goalkeeper continues to go from strength to strength. Isak Hansen-Aarøen - Signed on a free transfer, the Norwegian international midfielder is not only versatile, but is always one of our better players. Cleiton Pinheiro - The former loanee signed for a club record £17.25m from Liverpool. Playing at left back, he is rated as the best player at the club by some distance. Owain McGivern YP28A15 - The youth academy graduate has progressed beautifully and at aged sixteen, is already guaranteed at least a place on the bench every game. Josh Ratcliffe - Another free transfer acquisition, the defender had a superb season. Next Season We are good enough to avoid a relegation battle. Sorry again @dafuge but the inherited squad with them just feels to me to play to my strengths tactically. I played for about four hours being far more methodical with everything I was doing in pre season with signings tactics etc. Did pick up a very nice 3-2 win over Hemel in my first league game though which was pleasing. League Table - one loss, to Southampton. Makes me want to vomit. Community Shield - no problem here as we scored early and late on. League Cup - we saved our best for the final. FA Cup - we weren't in great form going into the final, but losing like this hurts. UEFA Champions League - we suffered some really bad injuries at the time of the semis, but this was still a horrible way to go out. Squad - there's a few players that might need replacing after lengthy injuries. Transfers - we switched left backs and DMs. Finances - a small loss. Key Player Profiles: Craig Austin - another amazing season. Patrick Wembangomo - it has taken years to find someone who can play this role well. Kacper Zalewski - an amazing player. G_D_K Posted February 6, 2021 Share Posted February 6, 2021 (edited) Season Review (Season Five, 2025-26) Table / Position Graph / Squad / Finances / Transfers / Manager Attributes / Manager Character / Facilities / Annual Injuries / Competitions / Reputation / Club Vision SUMMARY Season 5 started out very rough --- and my early hopes of making a good run in the league were disconcertingly dashed. There was good news --- in our 6 matches in August, we were only outscored by a total of 3 goals (1-0 loss to Eastleight, 3-1 loss to eventual winners Yeovil Town), and 4 draws. Better news was I seemed to have found a replacement for Crook (still on the team -- and for another 2 years, as he would not sign a 1-yr deal), who only scored 15 last season and seems to be playing at the limit of his ability. Jack Jenkins came in and scored a pair of goals in the 2-2 opener vs Woking (including a 92d minute equalizer), and a hat-trick in the 2nd match vs Dagenham & Redbridge (a 3-3 draw). Those were his only goals on the month, but it showed a glimpse of the player he would become (he would end the campaign with 25 goals, leading the team and losing out on League Top goalscorer on the final day). September started no better, with a scoreless draw vs Barrow, giving us 5 points in 7 matches. Then, something kicked in. Tactical familiarity? Team cohesion? Team talk? Not sure...but we reeled off a series of 12 matches without a loss, finally succumbing to Aldershot town in late November. We picked up 5 points in our next 3, then lost to Stockport county, won a pair, lost a pair....but by the end of December we were solidly in the top half -- the 2-0 loss to Gateshead on the final day of 2025 would put us out the lowest point on the table that we would occupy for the rest of the season (9th). Included in (and possibly contributing to some of the losses due to squad rotation) the run of matches included the start of our cup matches --- and I was determined to make a good run to try to earn some much needed cash, as despite the small rise in attendance, we were not making nearly as much as I'd hoped (the stadium expansion in mid-December might have represented a small upturn in attendance though, which would help....if only a little). Come January, we were virtually unstoppable. Well....in the league, we were unstoppable....you'll have to read below for the details of our non-league matches. We did not lose a single league match in 2025. In fact, we only dropped 12 points (6 draws) from January thru the end in April---and continued the run into May. With 5 to play, the title was actually mathematically within reach --- but a 1-1 draw vs Maidenhead, with 4 to play, after leaders Yeovil had a bad loss vs a 23rd ranked Brackley, meant we could not capitalize and left us fighting off Barrow for 2nd (they had 2 matches in hand and superior goal differential). In the end, we just went the easy route and won our final 5 matches to see off the challenge and put us in the best spot to enter the playoffs. Overall, the season was.....strange. All of the success...yet our overall stats were (mostly)....not good. We did end up joint 2nd in goals scored (74 xG of 53.37), and 6th in goals conceded (49 xGA of 58.61) -- but we were 19th in possession, 23rd in crossing, only 14th in pass completion, 22 in shots per game, 23rd in shots against. We managed only 2 goals from corners (joint last), 1 from direct free kicks (only 5 teams had none), and 1 goal from indirect free kicks (only Havant & W had 0). Interestingly, we did create a fair number of goals off of throw-ins (a stat apparently not tracked in the league stats). All in all, the stats were pretty unconvincing. Until you look at one area -- the clinical nature of our strikers: We were 5th in clear cut chances created, 1st in Shots on Target ratio (at 50%), and an astounding 18.23% of chances converted --- Far far above the 2nd place team! Jenkins, of course, led the team with 25 goals/2 assists (led team with an AvR of 7.08 as well), but his fellow strikers did their share. Jaylan Wildbore, signed last season to be the strike partner of Crook (and Jenkins this year), finally came into his own on the left side of the pairing, netting 19 times and providing 2 assists. Callum Crook did his part, and was particularly apt at coming off the bench and scoring in critical games, and he added 14 goals to his tally (and another 5 assists as well). With his final year looming, he certainly deserves his ICON status (perhaps even more than me!!). He is now the 2nd most prolific striker I have ever had in any edition of Football Manager (and I've been playing every year since the early/mid 90s!) His tally is now at 144 league goals --- add another 13 cup goals and he stands at 157 goals for the team. Sadly, he is really playing at the limits of his ability, and with another step up to League Two, I just don't think he'll be able to continue. If he can get another 8-10 I'll be pleasantly surprised --- but, he has done very well, both in key games (see below) and late in matchups --- so maybe he can do it again. On the other side of the pitch, new signing Craig King did a very good (very great at times) job in the net, ending with an AvR of 7.06. Given the number of shots faced (an astonishing 626 in league play -- nearly twice Yeovil's 329, and only better than Blyth Spartans' 665 in total), he was absolutely incredible. His AvR of 7.03 (2nd on team) might have even been underrated -- he was THAT good! He ended 4th in goals conceded (39 in 36 appearnces), was only 11th in clean sheets (11), but was top in save ratio (83%!!!). He really kept us in the hunt all through the season (and.... in the cups, see below!) In between the strikers and the goalkeeper -- we had a pretty mixed bag. No one was really very poor, but very few were extremely excellent either. We had a solid rotation of midfielders/wingers which I was able to rotate to keep everyone fresh, and keep everyone (mostly) satisfied with playing time. In fact, it wasn't until about the final month (6-8 matches) that I had a pair of players (whom I'd ruled out for next season anyway) complain at all. Sadly, one of them was team leader/model citizen Daniel Magill (clearly not cut out for this level). I really had to tread carefully and get him the playing time he wanted, usually resorting to subbing him out in the 2nd half at the earliest feasible time! As a team leader (and model citizen), he did his job, however. I had a really large number of players gain the determination and/or professional personalities thanks to his mentoring :).Other players of note include Kyran Henderson --- now on his 5th season with the team, and moved over to right wing for my 2 formations utilizing that role. HE manged an impressive 2 goals/10 assists despite being converted to the right...using him as an inside forward masked his weak right foot and allowed him to be effective in that role. Sadly, I still hadn't found a suitable right winger willing to play for me....but I have a plethora of the left winger variety! Newcomer (and Singapore international) Harry Birtwhistle had a solid, if unspectacular debut season at right back, alternating with old-timer Ashaiah Fearon. Finlay Barnes, the only player (I believe) that I inherited which is still on the team, also had a solid year, contributing another 10 goals in his dual role as AMC/MC(AP) (depending on formation). Sadly, he only managed 3 assists (despite having 60 key passes), which has me still looking for that creative playmaker in the midfield --- a key are to address in the offseason. Overall it was a very unexpected season -- especially given the start, but very welcome one. With a few additions, I hope to have another successful season next year.... Spoiler in LEAGUE TWO!!!!!!!!! (See below!) Promotion / Playoffs An exciting journey toward the top left us just short of the title, and put us in a position to have to win the play-offs in order to achieve promotion. Our position as #2 at least gave us a couple days breather, and gave us an edge in the coming match(es). First up would be Daggenham & Redbridge, a team we've yet to beat in 4 attempts (2D2L). And, this time, despite our enormous xG advantage (1.43 - 0.37), it appeared we would have problems closing the deal, and it took an extra-time mistake by the opposition to grab a lead in the 101st minute. Fullback Fearon launched a long throw into the box, and Dag&Red keeper Jaros, solid thru this point in the match, went up to grab it, and only managed to deflect it slightly to the back post, where MC Barnes was waiting to shuttle it into the net. That solo goal would be enough to see us thru to the final. If nothing else, we have a payday coming, with more than 37K tickets sold at Wembley for the showdown against Barrow. Barrow is another team that we've had problems with -- and visa-versa. Two meetings with them (both this year, obviously) let to a grand total of... zero goals. Yep, two 0-0 draws in our early meetings against them meant that this match would, if form followed, be a fairly boring affair likely settled by penalty kicks. Taking a close look at my squad, I managed a couple replacements, moving to the bench a couple players that hate big matches, but still had to choose between Jenkins and Crook up front (neither of whom like the big match). In the end, for better or worse, I went with Crook, who, although he hasn't been as prolific in the VNL (12 goals in 20(20) appearances -- 15 additional goals in the prior year's VNL campaign), I know can score in big matches. Unfortunately, Barrow managed to actually score (and score early, about the 21st minute), leaving us chase the game. Come mid-game, I had some hard choices to make, and in the end I left Crook on (while he hadn't scored, he had made a few decent chances, and I hoped that he would actually bury one) and made my subs in other areas. The choice to stick with Crook proved the right choice, as he popped up in the 83rd minute to score a simple tap-in off of a low cross from converted AMR Henderson (the same Henderson that has played as AML for the past several seasons). A late equalizer! Now for extra time and, probably, penalties. Or, not. As, 2 minutes later.....newcomer MCL Reece Whylie, on in the 63rd minute, fed Crook a thru ball up the center, Crook beat the DCL, took a single step to draw the keeper to the near post, and buried the ball into the net at the far post for a 2-1 lead!! About 8 minutes later, there were wild celebrations as the ref blew the whistle -- we had done it! Playoff win in front of 38817 fans, and our predicted 23rd in the league showed the world just how bad the odds makers could be when they were off! League Two, here we come! (And the first message in the box aside from the normal game-day messages was the board wishing a meeting to discuss going pro --- and I didn't even have to beg for it!!!) Cup Competitions If the progress in the league to this point was any indication (at the time of our first FAC match in the 4th qualifying round, we were on a run of 8 matches unbeaten, picking up 18 points from those matches), then we were bound to have a pretty good cup run. And, we didn't disappoint. The FAC kicked off with a revenge match vs VNLN Chester (who beat us 3-0 in the FAT4R the previous season), and while we didn't exactly pour out our wrath on them, we did at least manage a 1-0 home win, the goal coming from Jack Jenkins in the 5th minute. Not a terribly auspicious start to the campaign, but we were still in it at the least (and, to be fair, this was our first victory over Chester in 6 attempts--so that's something!) Next up was same-division Chorley, with whom we've had quite a lengthy relationship with, as this would be our 8th meeting -- and though we'd only picked up 7 points in our previous 7 meetings against them, we had beaten them 2-1 at home just over a month prior. This tie would also be a home match, and Strikers Wildbore and Crook would see us through this match with another 2-1 home victory. Better, but we still need to improve if we're going to face off against larger teams deeper into the competition. At least, by this point, we're getting a decent number of quality shots against a similar level team---something we've not managed a lot (and would continue to struggle with throughout the season). But, a win is a win, and set us up for the Second Round, this time a home match vs VNL Barnet. This is another team with at least a little history, as we'd faced them 3 times, going 3-2, 3-5, and most recently, 0-0. A tough match, but we did have the home advantage, and after conceding a late 1st half goal, duly turned up the pressure, finally equalizing via a Barnes PK in the 74th minute. Crook/Jenkin's Striker partner, the left-footed Wildbore, then put us thru to the 3rd round with a well placed shot in the 78th minute, giving us our 2nd consecutive 3rd round appearance in the FA Cup. Crossing our fingers for a good draw, we had to wait until the last two teams came out, and found ourselves pitted against Championship Cardiff at the Cardiff City Stadium! ££££ flashed thru my eyes with that draw!!!! And, of course, we were utterly outmatched. Cardiff enjoyed 57% of the possession, managed 30 shots (10 on target, or the scoreline could have been worse), while we managed only 5 shots (4 on target). xG was 3.6 to 0.88 in Cardiff's favor, but it took a penalty in the 35th minute for them to take the lead (to this point I don't think I had registered a single shot). A second goal in the 59th minute pretty much sealed the deal as we'd still not registered more than one shot (off target). Oh well.... there were....ugh, only 12,260 fans in attendance??? They're getting 23-25K fans at home in their league matches....where's the crowd? My hopes of a payday pretty much shattered, I could only watch as Cardiff mounted attack after attack, with keeper King being tested on multiple occasions. Then, a miracle (of sorts)....King smothered a loose ball in the box, sent a searching ball forward to newcomer Frailing, who fed a 1-time pass to Jenkins -- Jenkins shoots.......Jenkins scores!!!!!!! 2-1 in the 71st minute! And at least we're going to demonstrate we're not pushovers!!!! By this point we've been outshot something like 21-2, but we've scored! And, we soak up more pressure, then, in a fit of inspiration (or desperation?), I put Crook in....he's done...not much to this point, as Jenkins, his erstwhile replacement, is being groomed to take over top striker job. But, miracle of miracles, he comes thru --- on the pitch just over 2 minutes, he takes a ball lofted by goalkeeper King just past midfield, splits both defenders, and chips the advancing keeper--- the ball doesn't have much momentum, but it does, barely, find the net with 2 defenders trying desperately to reach it to keep it out. 2-2!!!!!! Can we possibly.......... .....Yes.... we can hold on for a 2-2 draw and a home replay!!! Outclassed, but the two strikers would immortalize this day with their late efforts!! And, the big £££ that I dreamed of would actually come to pass in a roundabout way, as we pack our stadium for the replay. This was a very low-key affair after the last, with Cardiff only registering 10(5) shots --- but two of those were goals. Our only shot of the match, a penalty by Barnes, went in, but it was not enough to overtake the giant that is Cardiff, and we bow out in the 3rd round. Still....it was quite the journey!!! The FAT wasn't nearly as fun to be in with us needing a home replay after a 1-1 draw against Hereford (which we won 2-0) to get to the Fourth Round. And, the fourth round was sandwiched by the FAC replay, so I didn't put any effort in, putting a bunch of U23s/U18s in the squad and only keeping the senior members that I knew would not feature in the FAC replay. The youngsters acquitted themselves well, with youngster Oli Bate (whom I had signed the season prior to try to develop into a Crook replacement) bagging 2 goals late to send us into extra time -- but the inexperience showed and a mistake by the defense allowed a (eventual league title winning) Yeovil team thru to the next round, ending our FAT ambitions. Overall, a very good run in the cups --- and hopefully, the team would hold their heads high and not be dispirited by the losses. (And, having read the first sections, you can surmise they did just that!!!) Additional Details Team of the Season Best XI Inductees It's fitting that Crook's replacement, Jack Jenkins, leads the class of four. First up, we've gone PRO! That'll help a lot, giving more training opportunity...maybe get some of these players closer to their potential. I already have lined up 4 transfers (3 that should start -- and AMR, AMC, and DM/DC. Still need a bit of cover at fullback I think, but my midfield is fairly fleshed out, as are my striker core of Jenkins, Crook, and Wildbore (the three combined for 58 goals). I'll probably keep King as my starting keeper, but if he has problems, I'll be on looking for more. As for the cash influx...well, the FAC+Wembley funds have been spent. Mandatory stadium upgrade for L2 adding 1500 seats (and another £850K or so loan) is coming in, and I spent most of my ready cash convincing the board to improve youth facilities (which they agreed to after denying me upgrade to senior training facilities). Also managed to squeeze in a personal coaching course (Nat B I think), A couple extra scouts, an extra coach, and increased junior coaching budget (hopefully a good class out of the academy this year! As usual, they were completely unable to find a team at a higher level --- we're obviously at the top --- to establish an affiliate with. I might try another junior partner, but the teams they found last year were all something like T8 --- I still managed to snag Norwich Utd and send some of my youngsters out on loan --- but really can't expect much. Maybe they'll actually find a VNN/S team to link with. As for plans.....hopefully we can stay up. That's the goal....the 4 signings should be a big help --- if my strikers can keep their clinical finishing up, we have a chance. I think. If not....well, I don't think I'll get the sack if we go back down. At least, I hope not! It was quite a difficult season since my squad was pretty horrible. We started off pretty badly, but defensively improved when I exchanged a CM for a DM in October. We looked set for a comfortable mid-table finish, but a tremendous 14 game unbeaten run in the league put us in 7th place and so we even made it to the play-offs! After an incredible lucky extra time win against Dulwich Hamlet in the play off quarter finals, Bromley was far too strong in the semi-finals and we lost 2-0. Nevertheless, I'm quite proud of the team. However, if I want to challenge for promotion next year, I definitely need a much better squad, so I will be making rigorous changes. League table - Concord Rangers and Bromley were in a class of their own. We actually lost only 10 times (same as Bromley), but drew too many games to challenge for the title. FA Trophy - We were lucky in the draw for the first few rounds, but in the quarter finals we were no match for VNL team Yeovil FA Cup - I was very happy with this cup run as it brought in quite some money. Of course, when we drew Grimbsy I knew it was over, but we actually gave a good account and only lost 1-0. Squad - needs an overhaul if we want to challenge for the title. Some of the older players have a much higher wage than their ability warrants, though signing cheaper might also mean signing younger. There are a couple of ones with decent potential, but I simply do not have the time to wait. I believe 2,5-3 stars in this squad still counts as a leading Regional Premier Division player. Transfers - Brought in a large amount of players. Not all of them were good, but I had almost no knowledge of the available players, so not all the signees were great. The squad didn't have a left winger and only one left back, but I didn't manage to really strengthen that side to my liking. Julius Ndene came on a loan in the second half of the season and ensured that I could rotate the center backs a bit. There is definitely a lot of work to do here for next season! Finances - Not good. We lost 30K even with though we earned some money in the FA Cup. We need to proceed at least this far again next year and hope that more fans turn up at our home games. Key players: Henry Newcombe - My best player is the GK. He saved us countless times Julius Ndene - Apparently can't head a ball to save his life, but nonetheless helped us achieve a 14 game unbeaten run at the end of the season. David Smith - Our top goalscorer by far. Tremendously contributed to the good season and ended in 3rd place in the top goal scorer award of the league. I'm in doubt if I should reward him with a contract extension even though his stats are not great. Any thoughts from you guys? tremor Posted February 13, 2021 Share Posted February 13, 2021 (edited) Scarborough Athletic 2027-28 Season Overview Great season overall, made some decent acquisitions in the summer, took a chance on a couple of youngsters as well as bringing in some on reputation to help add quality to the squad. For some reason we seem to be doing amazingly well as far as hiring goes, lots of unproven youngsters who are turning out to be better than they initially sounded alongside hiring a few more well known players and selling them on for profit. The depth of squad this year made a noticeable difference and we were able to rotate properly despite being in more competitions and rather than have that dec-jan slump we actually began a proper run in the new year. This might also be tied to having a more settled way of playing and giving it time to bed in, for the first time we also changed our style of play, trying to be more solid at the back and still being a high energy counter attacking side... the main change was more enforced than by choice and that was dropping our strikers much deeper, often playing them as attacking mid Shadow strikers or having 2 inside forwards leading the line with midfield player bursting through the middle, it seemed to fox lots of teams. We still struggled with possession though, we were the 3rd or 4th lowest in the league by the end, i couldn't work out why though, we were trying to play a patient possession game and using the counter press to make openings... i guess it ended up being just a really solid defensive block that occasionally broke forward. Hopefully next season we can find some proper out and out strikers of a suitable quality to again look at leading the line in a more traditional sense... or given this seasons success on our extremely modest budget where we can still only really attract championship players and the occasional foreign merc it might be worth persevering Anyway here we have it: Next season... well we're in the Champions cup... pretty sure we'll be lucky to make it out of the groups... hopefully we can pick up some more silverware in another cup competition and stay in the top 4... we definitely need another big summer to bring more quality in to support the few gems we already have. I'm fully loaded on badges now which is great but I still need to round out my coaching team and support staff so that will be another focus. We're moving into our new stadium hopefully over the summer which is great news and the board is constantly supporting my requests for training and youth upgrades however we're still only really bringing in league 2 level talent in the U18s so i'm hoping to start work on building some sort of internal development over the next few years which i guess starts with getting a solid coaching team and a top HOYD. Nantwich Town- Vanarama National League North-2021-2022 Our media prediction was to finish 23rd. So I knew this was going to be a tough Season. League Table Past Positions Graph- As you can see we started poorly but picked some decent form around matchday 4 the highest we were placed was in 6th position on matchday 6 but we had hit and miss season. The Emirates FA Cup- Royston Town beat us in the qualifying rounds 2-1. The Buildbase FA Trophy - Hereford were so stronger than us beat us 3-2 Squad- Was not the best of teams I have managed but still room for improvement. Transfers 1/ Transfers 2- Mostly loans and free transfers here. Finances -Spending a bit over my wage budget but not by much. KEY PLAYER PROFILES: Ethan Johnston- on loan from Hungerford Town was our top scorer. Crispypaul Posted February 19, 2021 Share Posted February 19, 2021 Crispypaul Bamber BridgeVanarama National League 2023/24 League - Season Review 1 | Season Review 2 - an excellent if crazy season - we finished north of 100 points as did Solihull Moors - the title decider being the last game away at their place where we somehow won 3-2 to lift the tile and obtain promotion into the League Two. FA Cup - Fixtures - straightforward home draws until we got the cash cow of West Ham away in the 3rd round, a 4-1 defeat not too bad considering. FA Trophy - Fixtures - got into the final where we beat York on penalties after a 1-1 draw to lift the trophy Finances - we got £1.5m from playing at the Olympic Stadium which has gone on facilities upgrades and a stadium expansion Transfers - sold some players for a little of cash, spent none myself Squad Top 5 players George Ray - experienced centre half signed for the season Tom Cannon - didn't play as much but still very prolific Ethan Kachosa - good on the right wing again Joe Smyth-Ferguson - ex Burnley youngster signed on a free, scored a hatful of goals Brandon Lonsdale - signed permanently after his loan spell and very prolific again Future - we of course went professional so I'll be doing what I can with the squad next season Season Division Position FA Cup League Cup Europe Notes 2021/22 VNN 1st 3rd round - - League winners, promoted 2022/23 VNL 4th 3rd round - - Lost in play off semi 2023/24 VNL 1st 3rd round - - League winners, promoted, FA Trophy winners Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

League Table - another unbeaten season, but a lot more draws this time. Community Shield - it took two late goals to recover from the early red card. UEFA Super Cup - a comfortable win. League Cup - just one goal conceded, although the final was tight. FA Cup - we made up for that penalty loss last season. UEFA Champions League - unbeaten, but we had a few tough draws. Squad - a new left back is all we really need. Transfers - I sold a star striker after a nightclub incident, I also picked up a brilliant DM for £85m. Finances - we were in debt for most of the season, so I'm going to have to keep an eye on the spending. Key Player Profiles: Craig Austin - top scorer, just. Mauro - making a decent case to be the main man. Kacper Zalewski - not seen a player worth this much before. Largely due to one player and his 49 (!) goals. FA Cup - Fixtures - a couple of safe draws then a lucky win away at Millwall in the 3rd. A good draw at home to Morecambe was followed by Leeds in the fifth round whom knocked us out. EFL Cup - Fixtures - out at the first hurdle EFL Trophy - Fixtures - who cares Finances - doing well although our youth setup is costing more cash Transfers - free transfers in, some sales out including a biggie Squad Top 5 players Kyle Edwards - Pt 2 - just wow! This former Arsenal trainer was signed on a free and had an astonishing first half of the season. Unfortunately he had a £500k min fee and Sheffield Wednesday started asking around in January, so I got £475k + Friendly + 50% add on + loan back which was great, he ended up hitting a record number of goals. Will be hard to replace in League One. G_D_K Posted February 24, 2021 Share Posted February 24, 2021 (edited) Season Review (Season Six, 2026-27) Table / Position Graph / Squad / Finances / Transfers / Manager Attributes / Manager Character / Facilities / Annual Injuries / Competitions / Reputation / Club Vision SUMMARY Season 6 was....strange. Our 10th place finish was probably undeserved, but resulted in a few decent stretches of good form which wasn't entirely ruined by the bad stretches. We quietly (surprisingly, when I checked the end of season stats) finished 9th in goals scored. This despite the fact that our leading goalscorer (once again, back to Callum Crook only had 11 goals (9 league goals). Last year's top scorer, Jack Jenkins, was largely disappointing, finding the net only 6 times in total. The #2 striker on the team was again Josh Wildbore partnering Jenkings/Crook on the left, finding the net 9 times (all league goals). The rest of our goals came from the midfield (Barnes--7 goals, Martin--6 goals, Henderson--5 goals, Gallimore--4 goals), with another handful of goals coming from defenders and sub/rotation players. The assists seem to have come mostly from the right, with DR Lyndon Kane getting 8, while AMR Euan Williams provided another 7 assists. Left Wingers Forrester and Martin each provided 5 assists each, while further assists came from the center, with Barnes adding 5 assists to his goal tally, and newcomer MC Gallimore adding 3. It seems I still have a bit of a problem finding the key playmaker in the squad, although it does shape up to be leaning toward that right side. I do need to improve my attack if I'm going to succeed going forward. 9th in goals scored is okay (esp. as we were 14th in xG at 46.48 vs our actual scored of 64) -- but we were 23rd in shots taken, 24th in CCC, meaning we are not creating enough chances. Our saving grace was that we were 2nd in Shots on Target and 1st in Conversion rate. Defensively, we were...pretty much as mediocre Our 63 goals conceded left us just barely positive in goal differential (and was good enough for 14th overall). Our xGa was 2nd at 70.28, so we definitely leaned toward the impenetrable edge of the scale -- good as we were also on the very BUSY end, ending up 3rd in shots faced. Craig King had his hands full most matches, and the fact he kept 14 clean sheets didn't go unnoticed by the fans who named him the player of the year (might need to hand him an iron-man trophy, as I don't think he missed a minute of any match all season). One area I was both pleased with and displeased with were set pieces. We still need work on DFKs (only scored 1, but that put us joint 10th, so no big deal, no one was scoring many); but we also grabbed 4 goals from IFKs (10th), and another 8 from corners (4th in league). While it's not a tracked stat, we also managed to grab a goal on several occasions from play off of throw-ins. On the other hand, we didn't do very well defending set pieces. (I spent much more time setting up attacking routines -- this season I need to spend more time setting up defensive routines). We ended up conceding 4 from corners (6th) 1 from DFKs, and 7 from IFKs (21st) ourselves. Overall, it was a solid first year as a professional club. I'm hoping that getting everyone on full-time contracts/training will help a lot more in the coming season. I've got a little rotation, but will be counting on a large number of the base team to keep us in contention for the coming year. My main focus will be adding one or two play-makers, and maybe a defender or two as I don't have a lot of rotation there (and am losing the loanee that I had that was a very solid option). Here's hoping to (at least) as good a season in the coming year! Promotion / Playoffs We made a strong push for a playoff spot, but it was just a bit too far a reach. We'll give it a try next season. Cup Competitions Nothing much went on here --- one and done for both the league and FA cup (2-0 loss to Plymouth in the FA Cup, 2-0 loss to QPR in the league cup). A bit of a better run in the PJT, as we pulled out a 1-0 win over Bournemouth, and two 1-1 PK shootouts (loss vs Wycombe, win vs Bristol Rovers) at least gave us a chance for another round, where we were completely overpowered (4-1) by L1 Oxford United. A good strong cup run would really have helped, it just wasn't to be. Additional Details Team of the Season Best XI Inductees No new inductees this season. Expect a couple to crack into it next season though....most notably Boateng and Gallmore. Historical Best XI Fans Player of the Season Goalkeepers finally earn some respect from the fans, as Craig King (52 app, 7.06 AvR, 63 conceded, 14 clean sheets) played the hero on multiple occasions this season Signing of the Season Strangely, Dino Leddie earns this distinction -- with only 10(1) appearances to his credit, albeit at a 7.01 AvR with a goal and an assist playing as DC Young Player of the Season Jordan Forrester (ML) earns the title this year Goal of the Season -- Daniel Gallimore with a fierce effort from about 28 yards thru a crowded box finds the net --- I believe this was his first for the team too! Top Goalscorer -- Crook back on top, albeit with only 11 goals (9 league) Most Assists -- Euan Williams (7) Most PoM awards -- Finley Barnes --- with only TWO!!!??? Highest AvR -- Jack Jenkins Additional awards: Jenkins was the VNL signing of the season, runner up for top goalscorer. Yours truly won Manager of the Year. Leiston were both the FA Cup and the VNL league overachievers. Youth Intake Preview/Intake/ Top Graduate Spoiler Preview Season 1 Ken Ward, A left back that with just a little development might crack the first team next season. (incidentally...coincidentally? 2nd edition of FM in a row that my "top graduate" was named Ward! FM20 was Karl Ward! Preview Season 2 Maxwell Gard, (not my pick as top youth!) is a multi-role potential player that looks good enough to fill in immediately in a pinch. Whether he develops or not will be the deciding factor. Preview Season 3 John Evans -- a Center-back with potential. Need to get my Model-Citizen to mentor him a bit...and need coaches and facilities to actually improve players. Preview Season 4 Tyrone Cooper -- The best of the batch likely won't ever make the first team. Interestingly, I had a large amount of "outspoken, volatile, confrontational" players in this crop (and the HYoD is more media-friendly). Preview Season 5 Chesley Jacob -- Someone who I can actually feel a bit excited for --- 1* Senior CA with a pretty decent array of attributes (not overwhelming, but not lacking in any major area either). Might see some part-time work in coming season. 2.5-3.5* potential too. Preview Season 6 At 3-4* potential, Nelson Eames is easily the best prospect to come thru the system. Time will tell if the defender can crack into the team in the future. Getting the rest of the team on full-time contracts will be beneficial. The change in wage cap (cap removed) might be interesting....fortunately, I finished this season before the update, so I do have the full £28K at my disposal (despite the fact that I was only spending about £12-£13K in this first L2 season -- the extra was useful for getting some transfers in on my limited (or non-existent) transfer budget. Hopefully, with a couple of additions (playmakers!!!) I can challenge for the playoffs this season again. DazRTaylor Posted February 25, 2021 Share Posted February 25, 2021 (edited) End of Season Review Season 2021/22 Kingstonian Season Summary An exciting finish to the season as we won the title and were promoted to the Vanarama National. We also had two good cup runs. Season Details League Table - At one stage, we were ten points behind the top spot, but we finished the season very strongly and secured the title and promotion on the last day of the season. League Fixtures 1 & 2 - I feared the worst after a winless January, but ten straight wins to finish the season enabled us to win the league title and secure promotion. F. A. Cup - A good cup run where we made it though to the second round, before losing away to League One side Crawley Town. F. A. Trophy - A fantastic run that was ended by Dagenham & Redbridge, who play in the league above, in the semi finals. They narrowly beat us 4-3 on aggregate. Pre Season Friendlies - Nine games were played against other clubs and we won all four away games, though we lost all five home games. Squad - A decent squad that is more than good enough to challenge for a place in the Football League. Squad Dynamics - After a good promotion, this is ok, though the club atmosphere could be better. Transfers In 1 & 2 - I completely transformed the squad and therefore signed a large number of young players. Transfers Out - Four departures, including three for small transfer fees. The last sale was above my head, agreed by the Chairman, though at least there was a sell on clause inserted for this hot prospect. Youth Candidates - A dreadful intake with no one receiving a tag. Michael Morgan is supposed to be the best player this year but I doubt he will make a first team appearance for us. Finances - We have slipped into the red so I am worried my chairman will accept low bids for my players in the summer. Key Players Sean Adarkwa - Striker signed on a free transfer and had a solid enough season, scoring 29 goals in 50 appearances. David Agbontohoma - Signed as a squad player, the central defender was so good, he was one of the first names on the teamsheet. Mungo Bridge - Versatile defender who I use at both left back and as a centre half. Jack Spong - Another versatile player, he plays in either central midfield or on the left wing. Injuries hampered his season somewhat. Thimothee Lo-Tutala - Teenage French goalkeeper who is too inconsistent. Next Season I believe we are good enough to challenge for a play off place.
