New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

Been playing fm since fm13 on my currrent laptop(didnt buy it myself). Its only until today that i found out my laptop doesnt meet the minimum system requirements. Recently tried out the FM16 demo and on my laptop the 3D ME is similar to the ME of FM14. The engine on my laptop doesnt run like the official fm videos posted on youtube, eg fewer amount of animations, players wearing same coloured boots, etc.

I have a:

HP Pavilion dv6-3108ea Entertainment Notebook PC

2.53 GHz Intel Core i5-460M Processor

6GB RAM

500 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive 7200 rpm

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 64-bit

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 Graphics (which I deleted accidentally and now doesnt appear in my device manager after trying to update drivers:()

IntelĀ® HD Graphics (in device manager under display drivers this is the only one that appears:()

Got more than 80GB free disk space

The only problem with this laptop is its 3D graphics capability, which was 2.5* (average rating) on FM15 but now its 1.5* (poor rating) on FM16 Demo. Performance wise its very good. Processes the game reasonably well. Usually have 4 or 5* for computer performance and game speed if I remember well (cba to post a screenshot:lol:)

Also have this :(

FMSCR_zpscbwplq8l.jpg

Will I have to buy a new laptop to play 3D matches well or how exactly can I update drivers? I noticed that I don't have the Nvidia one.

Well your graphics card is a RAdeon, made by AMD not Nvidia. Which explains that one.

I'd get myself on pcspecialist and build my own on there encore, i've noticed prices have dropped and the cosmosIV-15 sounds right up your alley. Just add in a better cpu than the default one ( the i5 i'd choose for budget sake) and some more ram and you're good to go.

thanks for the advice, just ordered this one with the i5, 8gb ram, 1tb hard drive. payed extra to fast track

When I open device manager under the 'Action' tab I only have the help option.

EDIT: I found the 'Scan for Hardware Changes'. So how do I update drivers if possible?

Again - contact Radeon to get the most up to date driver. http://www.amd.com/en-us/who-we-are/contact

There's a detect and find software here http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Alright lads, I'm looking for a laptop to play FM16 I have played every fm since cm2 but my old laptop conked out in January and I couldn't afford to replace it but now 16 is out I have got the appetite back for fm plus a lot more spare time! Was looking at this http://www.very.co.uk/toshiba-p70-b-11p-intel-core-i7-16gb-ram-2tb-hdd-173-inch-full-hd-laptop-with-4gb-dedicated-gfx-graphics-silver-metal/1600020126.prd?_requestid=117095top

As I want to load up a lot of leagues at once to do a journeyman save do you think this laptop will handle that? Not really up on what handles what but was wanting min 8gb ram and i7 processor and am sure 4gb dedicated graphics can only be a good thing! Plus 2tb hdd is massive!

It's not bad - but Ā£900 I think you can do better.

The specification below has been formatted so you can easily copy and paste this to our forums when discussing your specification. Once you've copied the specification, pleaseclick here to continue.

Chassis & Display

Cosmos Series: 17.3" Matte Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)

IntelĀ® Coreā„¢ i7 Quad Core Processor 6700HQ (2.6GHz, 3.5GHz Turbo)

16GB Kingston SODIMM DDR3 1600MHz (2 x 8GB)

NVIDIAĀ® GeForceĀ® GT 940M - 2.0GB DDR3 Video RAM - DirectXĀ® 12

250GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 540MB/sR | 520MB/sW)

8x SATA DVDĀ±R/RW/Dual Layer (+ 24x CD-RW)

Thermal Paste

ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND (Ā£9)

Price: Ā£815.00 including VAT and delivery.

Unique URL to re-configure: http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/quotes/cosmosIV-17/qjmIabEwz6/

So it's a large screen like originally quoted.

This has the latest processor - so it's more modern giving it longevity. Now - the processor you posted the 4720HQ - this model is a faster processor in turbo speed (it's a 2.6ghz but under certain conditions it can go maximum of 3.6ghz), that being said the newer processor can get close to this at 3.5ghz - which is nothing to compare really - to me they're identical. The graphics processing on the older model processor is faster, by 50mhz - which for me is nothing.

However, the newer processor is built under new architecture which it allows to stay cool for longer periods of time - and this is where it will outperform the other processor - the longer the game goes on, especially journeyman saves - the more data it produces, the more data means that there's more processing - and more processing means your CPU (computer processor unit) will get hotter. The hotter it gets the more it throttles to a lower gear. The cooler it can remain means that it will perform faster under extreme processing challenges - which is perfect for FM.

The atctic thermal paste will help with the above too.

I chose the 940m Graphics card because it's more than enough for FM - you are welcome to change this the 950m - but there won't be much difference for FM.

There's 250gb EVO SSD - fantastic for loading and saving your Journey man saves - again up this to 500gb if you want - but if I were you buy an external flash drive. I got a 128gb USB 3.0 for very little - something like this http://www.mymemory.ie/USB-Flash-Drives/MyMemory/MyMemory-128GB-USB-3.0-Flash-Drive---Red

There no option to remove the CD RW - but you can upgrade this to blu ray - or just leave it if you don't use dvds/cds then it's probably not something you want to add extra costs on.

Nice one cheers Smurf that looks a decent machine that! I am looking at the pay monthly option which is why I was looking at the laptop for Ā£900 from very as I can get 12 month interest free and basically pay it off in that time, will deffo look into the one you have showed me though as it looks a very decent laptop for a nice price thank you mate ?

Hi All

Well after 6 years my iMac has decided to pack in, which means I'm now left with nothing to play FM on! Luckily, fallout 4 has saved me from having withdrawals.

Looking for a direct replacement if possible, Apple preferably & a machine that can run FM at full capacity (highest graphics settings possible for 3D, was like watching subbeuto on my Mac in the end)

Budget anywhere up to Ā£1500 would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction as I'm hopeless with computers!

Would FM run ok on a 14.1" screen laptop? Seen a decent i7 laptop 2nd hand but wanting to know if the 3d engine would run ok with small screen while I save for a laptop I have seen on pc specialist.

Limmy check pc specialist like people on here have directed me to they have some good deals and you can build your own system by changing things about.

Hi Guys,

My laptop is fairly old and starting to get quite laggy in general let alone when running FM, and even worse has started turning off from overheating nearly every time I play (I used to be able to counter this by propping the corner up but even that doesn't seem to work anymore).

I do probably push it to its limit as I run about 40 leagues from 12 countries.

My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5742Z, Windows 7 Home Premium, 6GB RAM, IntelĀ® PentiumĀ® CPU P6200 2.13 GHz, 64-bit operating system.

What's most important for running FM, processor and RAM? Bearing in mind that I never use 3D match highlights, only 2D.

Can I actually get a lot better than my current laptop, for a reasonable price, I wouldn't like to spend much more than Ā£400, less if possible. I'd hate to spend around Ā£400 on a laptop and it only be slightly better than what I already have. I'm not sure if my laptop isn't that good or if it's just it's age.

Sorry for rambling on, any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I have looked for a new laptop as my current one has issues. I have used all the really good advice on this thread regarding processors and graphics cards. After a long search I have found this one which will obviously run FM15 & 16 really well with a big screen. I use my laptop for FM (no other games except occasional Sim City type games), my ITunes library and web browsing. It never leaves my house so weight and battery life are not relevant

to my circumstances.

My question is, has anyone had an MSI and is there any problems I should be aware of as I have never had one

Thanks

Mac Book or Mac Book Air or Mac Book Pro or Imac??

Screen size.

Amount of leagues you play?

I've been looking through the Mac site - their stuff is a complete rip off.

If you only play FM - then I think you could spend your 1500 a lot more wisely on a PC - if you insist on a Mac I completely understand.

If you're looking to play matches in 3D - the first Mac I can see that comes with a graphics card is Ā£1999.99

Honestly - for Ā£1500 you'd get a brilliant PC for FM.

Yeh it will be fine on a 14.1 inch screen. Keep saving and good luck!

What's more important is the Processor.

You would require a minimum of 4gb RAM on a 32 bit operating system, on a 64 bit system I'd recommend a minimum of 8gb RAM - as the OS will access more RAM.

Ideally - you'd be looking for processor first - then RAM. RAM helps with multi-tasking, like running antivirus, dropbox, music, videos, etc. while you do other tasks, like browse the internet etc. while playing FM.

Absolutely - you need a very good processor for what you're doing. More leagues = more processing - so you need more processing power.

Unfortunately, your budget doesn't leave a lot of room for getting something fantastic.

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/N0Z48ESABU-HP-ProBook-450-G2_1868143.html

This one I've looked up would suit you - it has a SSD drive which means your computer will boot up faster, and it load and save your game faster - and you are working with a huge database with so many leagues, your file size will be large.

The processor is good and better than what you already have by about twice as good.

You don't need a graphics card - so that's out.

Hope that helps.

MSI are a good make of computers.

However, I think this might be good for you - given that your processor is slightly better than what I'm about to post.

But this one has an SSD which will help with boot times and load and save times. Slightly more RAM too.

Not saying you have to go with this one but I'd be interested in what others think too.

Thanks Smurf, the SSD is appealing but I currently have an ASUS and its the one that has let me down (won't bore you with the details!!) that is why I was interested in whether the MSI was ok and it looked good value with the processor

Anybody have any idea what sort of battery life I should be getting on a new laptop?

I seem to be down to 1 - 1 1/2 hours while playing FM but about 3 1/2 hours on just internet browsing so wondering if this sounds right as its my first laptop due to always having PC in the past.

I've found this one from Currys http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/acer-aspire-f5-571-15-6-laptop-black-10137492-pdt.html how does it compare to the one recommended. I can't seem to find whether it's a 32-bit or 64-bit OS. Also, my current laptop is an Acer Aspire, are they prone to overheating or can that happen with any laptop that's being pushed to its limit? And lastly, this one I've found is Windows 10, is that likely to be an issue?

Thanks again

That sounds about right. FM puts a lot more load to the processor (and to the videocard while watching games in 3d) than web browsing does.

The hard drive is a 5400rpm (that's revolutions per minute). That's the slowest hard drive on the market.

They go in 5400rpm, 7,200 rpm, 10,000 RPM - slowest to fastest.

The model I posted has SSD - it doesn't have mechanical parts (that is it has no revolutions per minute) - it's a flash based drive which is faster than the mechanical drives.

The hard drive is important for starting up the computer, and also for loading and save times for the FM saved game, for example the longer you play a game on FM the larger your file size - so the longer it takes to save.

Having a slow hard drive would mean it takes longer to save - having a fast hard drive means it takes less time to load and save your saved games.

The SSD is a huge advantage over what you've posted.

If I were you I'd go for the MSI - they are really good computer manufacturers.

I think the Asus I posted would be better - but you don't want to go for that.

My choice would be the MSI.

Thanks mate really appreciated, the ASUS one was also further into the "beyond what I wanted to pay"!!! I started at 680 -720 then moved to 700 -750!!!

I'm currently using a Macbook Air 13" mid 2012 base spec (CPU is a Core i5-3427U) for my FM16 playing and, while it does work, I have to play with 3D visuals at their lowest settings and just about all the surrounding graphics switched off. And even then during matches the fan kicks in, it sounds like a 747 taking off and the base gets unbelievably hot - like, almost can't touch it hot.

So the question is, will upgrading to the latest MBA with the Core i5-5250U CPU both allow a bit of extra graphical detail and stop my PC from not-so-gently toasting my lap or is it not going to make much difference?

No Amazing Steve - it won't.

To be honest, unless you purchase the top end Mac Book Pro - very top end - then you may play your graphics on a the lowest setting available.

The graphics in that processor is a little worse than an entry level graphics card. If you want to play 3d matches then some sort of graphics card would be required. Unfortunately, all the Macs - bar the top end Mac Book Pro - don't have graphic cards.

I'm not speaking for all Mac Owners, and I'm sure some play very well with FM. But if you're only playing FM - then consider using your money for a custom built PC.

If you really need a Mac - then I understand that you don't want to go away from this.

If this is the case - what is your budget on a computer - Mac or PC - let us know.

Ah well, I could almost justify a new MBA to myself - it would cost about Ā£450 to switch - if it would significantly improve my FM experience but it doesn't sound worth it and I don't really want to spend that Ā£450 on a new PC which is specifically and only for FM.

I'll maybe invest Ā£15 in a laptop cooling pad instead and settle for the dodgy looking bare-bones 3D experience. To be fair, apart from that, it runs the game OK.

Well - I don't play on a Mac - maybe hold-fast until someone that does comes along. That's just my opinion based on the specs I see - it may perform better than it looks on paper.

Here's some info on Mac overheating https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353

I've seen this recommended - but can't vouch for it http://www.amazon.com/ThermaPAK-HS15A-HeatShift-Laptop-Laptops/dp/B001CBFTFM/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=N97NI7Y539NB&coliid=I2D2FK06AIE2CU

If you have a Surface Pro you can download the demo and try it out.

Other than that - perhaps a new thread for FM 16 on Tablets would be in order?

I have not a Surface, so I can't download the demo. I am just thinking about buying it

OK but Surface is a pc, is not a Tablet. I think this is the correct thread to ask it.

Thanks.

I understand that it's a fully functioning PC - but it is marketed as a tablet that can replace your PC.

To me it's a hybrid - it would be interesting for a thread on tablets that support FM well though and I just thought it might get lost in here with all the laptop talk.

Whatever you want to do - I'm not the keeper of the forums...

Just think it would be of benefit to the community.

No problem Smurf! thank you for the help. Just thought that this was the correct thread.

I agree that a new thread about FM16 on "2 in 1" or "hybrids" will be useful.

Anyway, if anybody with Surface pro read this thread please tell us about the experience.

Thanks mate - Was an old iMac early 2009 version. Looking online and can get around Ā£300 for it so definitely gonna go down that route to fund the new machine

Had a 24" monitor so similar to that would be ideal.

Usually play 7 leagues max, really only want to play on the highest graphics available so willing to switch to a PC & only play FM so anything that can handle the highest graphics settings would be perfect.

Really am clueless when it comes to custom built PC's though so it would need to be a ready made machine.

Any ideas where to look mate? Ā£1500 is my budget but if there's a PC that is going for cheaper then that would obviously be the preferred option!

Thank fook for this thread btw, no doubt I would be robbed blind if I headed into a store, they'd see me coming a mile away!!

I bought a Cube (this one http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/CB-CZ5840-745MP-Cube-Chameleon-CZ-5840_1858924.html) and it really runs FM quickly.. I've got 11 nations loaded with a database of 80k and various custom graphics, but it barely takes more than a few seconds to get through a full day's fixtures. Highly recommended.

However, when I first starting using it last week it made next to no noise at all, but in the last few days the fans seem to kick in more than they did last week. It can be quite noisy. I'm not doing anything differently. Does anyone have any ideas/advice? Thanks..

Make sure the fans are clear of any dust. Turn off your computer - buy a can of compressed air - and blow it into all the holes in the laptop, especially the fans.

I wouldn't recommend opening your pc - but clearing the fans would be an idea. If it remains noisy consider getting in touch with repairs

You have a warranty on your laptop that states

Please note, any products returned must be unused, If your product develops a fault within the 30 Days of purchase, we will collect the faulty unit, test it to confirm the reported fault, and then refund or replace (at customerā€™s request)
I was thinking about this Desktop Pc, will it run it smoothly?

MD A6 7400K Dual Core 3.90GHz Kaveri Black Edition (FM2+) - The video integrated with this processor will it be strong enough?

8GB DDR3 1600MHz G.Skill (1x8GB) Value Series

Yeh it would be fine - can you post a link to it?

It would be better with a graphics card - I wouldn't put the graphics on high detail at all - leave them set to low - or at least find a low setting that you're happy with.

My brand new laptop: Clevo P651RE (15.6", 1920x1080 IPS screen with G-sync)

Intel Core i7 6700HQ (2.6 to 3.5 GHz)

8 GB DDR4 RAM

Intel SSD

Nvidia GTX 970M 6GB VRAM

Win 10 64bit

Plays FM like a dream. I play with absolutely each and every league (as "playable"), and the game speed is quite allright. The gfx card is of course a massive overkill for FM, but I do play other games (that are more about 3D graphics performance) as well.

It's slim, it's light, and it is very quiet unless you go heavy duty; then you can clearly hear the fans. Internal temperatures are kept in check by a properly engineered cooling system. The screen quality is gorgeous. Hereby recommended. In the UK you can find laptops that are buildt on the same barebone chassis from Clevo @ PCSpecialist, MySN and a couple of others.

No worries mate think I am getting a Dell one i7 processor 8gb RAM 180gb ssd for Ā£200, not a bad price it will be my first proper fm game since January! Only played 105 hours on FM15! Going to try and get into a long term career save this year rather than doing 2/3 seasons max then starting a new game.

Thanks Smurf. I'd be really worried if its full of dust already, I've not even had it a week!

They only seem to kick in when I load FM and start playing a match

Hi Smurf

I'd like to buy a new laptop to play FM16 after being out of the game for a few years! Having read through the last few pages of this thread you seem to be the man in the know - I wonder if you could advise me. I'm not very tech savvy at all.

My situation seems to be similar to the poster above to whom you recommended the HP Probook:

I also would prefer not to exceed Ā£400 if possible. I just want a laptop that can run FM16 quickly and smoothly without over exerting the computer. I like the 2D dots rather than the 3D matches when playing, and I don't play any other games. I would only use the laptop for very basic web browsing, MS office etc. otherwise.

So, good at running FM16 easily and not much else is my requirement! Would the HP Probook be your recommendation for this also?

I was also looking at this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00YRY44AC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

PS - something that won't overheat and cause a really irritating noisy fan would be great as this has happened to me in the past!

Thanks in advance
