FM18 Performance Benchmarking Thread

Welcome all to this years FM18 Performance benchmarking thread! As per previous years, a save has been created with all 51 nations and 116 leagues using a large database. Total player count is 170,000.

Note: Per my own testing and other user reports, FM18 processes slower then previous editions due to new mechanics such as Squad Dynamics, Scouting revamp, Medical Centre etc.

Three saves have been provided this year to test and benchmark your computer under different conditions, these are as follows:

Benchmark A - Starts 20th August 2017, Detail Level: Default/Default

Benchmark B - Starts 20th August 2017, Detail Level: Default/Custom (Full detail set on EFL Championship, Premier League, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, Serie A, Primera Division)

Benchmark C - Starts 20th August 2019, Detail Level: Default/Default (Beginning of 3rd season)

To run the benchmarks, download benchmark save games from the following site:

Save files to \Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2018\games

Before running some tests, ensure your PC is configured for the best possible conditions for testing:

PC Settings:

  • Close all non-essential system tray icons (OneDrive, Sound\Motherboard\Peripheral apps etc)
  • Disable any non-essential services (Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology etc)
  • Turn on 'High Performance' power plan. (Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options)

FM Settings:

  • Ensure that auto save interval is disabled
  • Ensure that Enable Data Collection is disabled
  • Set processing to Fast (Less Responsive)
  • Ensure WindowMode is Full Screen

Make sure when running FM18, no other programs are running (i.e. Internet Explorer, Chrome, Task Manager, Office etc) and if running on a laptop make sure it is plugged into the power socket.

After you load the appropriate benchmark save game, just go on holiday for a week, and measure the time needed for processing using a stopwatch on your wristwatch or phone.

If you are unsure about your PC specs, you can download CPU-Z for free from https://www.cpuid.com/, this should give you all the precise information you need.

To find your true memory clock speed, in CPU-Z click on the MEMORY tab and check the value of the DRAM FREQUENCY field and then double it. (Example, my memory reports 1600 MHz which when doubled give 3200 MHz).
Alternatively, run the following command from a command line in windows: wmic memorychip get speed. This will report the speed for each RAM module in your PC (mine reports 3200 for each RAM stick).

The FM18 Computer Performance Rating can be found by loading FM18_Benchmark_A saved game and going to FM > Add/Remove Leagues. Score is at the bottom. The FM18 PC 3D Graphics Rating can be found in FM Preferences under the Match heading.

I have my i7 7700 what im going to do as well same set up as above but just got to change the cpu back around as i just wanted to see how much of a performance boost the i7 will be over the i5

Edit: In fm17 I got 3 min 20 sec with the same specs so fm18 seems either much slower or it needs more threads. I would also like to see someone with a 7700k or 8700k with really fast RAM, for example over 4000Mhz as i think ram speed really affect the loading time in fm.

Interestingly looking at the performance delta between my 6 Core / 12 Thread CPU @3.8Ghz and Powermongers I7 6700k with 4 Cores and 8 Threads, this game still looks dependant on a high IPC and raw clockspeed to be able to get the very best performance with my PC around 20% behind in total performance with these benchmarks

Evidently it's not taking advantage of the extra cores/threads.

This is made even more clear when comparing with jckc221's 4 Core/4 Thread machine with a turbo clock of 3.5Ghz, which offers extremely similar performance to my machine.

If I was a betting man, I would suspect that if the I7 7700 had SMT/Multi-threading turned off, it would return similar results as with a clock speed advantage of around 20% over jckc221s  I7 7400, you see around a 20% increase in performance.

I may run these benchmarks with SMT turned off on my rig, just to see what kind of speeds I get, but I suspect the difference will be negligible

if you compare results with FM17 performance thread - it seems Ryzen have better time now. Maybe FM18 have better multi-thread optimisation??  We will know this when 4-5 with ryzen make test...

This is what I wanted to see.  This setup almost matched my times (7700k @ 5GHz).  We have similar hardware so I'm guessing if you were to OC the RAM you would be able to top the leaderboard.  Other than the CPU, our hardware is pretty similar.  My RAM is OC'd to its rated speed of 4000MHz.  I tried the benchmarks with both my M.2 drive and my SATA SSD and saw no difference (+/- 2sec), so I have to think it's the RAM speed that's making the difference.

Not surprised to see that cpu do well, even more impressive to see it hang in there on test B against its bigger brother from the i7 range.

The top end of the i5 rand should always the obvious best bang for buck option for any PC build outside of extreme users like myself who always want to run every competition in full detail.

10 seconds seems to be within a plausible margin of error if hand timing & accounting for any variance in AI media/interaction/transfer decisions, still a solid performance & I suspect opting for the i5 over the i7 meant you had extra budget to allocate towards the 1070ti rather than maybe compromising with a 1060.

First try was a little off, comparing my results from B and C with other CPUs.

Actually I could have gone with i7, but performance is same as with i5, even with 1080ti. Maybe with 2080ti will show better, but by the time 8700K is better than 8600K in games, we will have an actual 8 core good CPU, on 10nm. I see these 6 cores, as a compromise, the future is at least 8 cores, sadly Ryzen lacked raw power.

 

Ontopic: during the holiday, I could see only in short periods of time when CPU was reaching 100% utilization on one core, most of the time stayed at around 40%. Any thoughts? Might be that that game is unoptimized...

Also, 6700K being same as 7700K, which is same as 8600K or 8700K all at 4.7Ghz, is just adding more prof that the game is not taking advantage of HW.

A good bench game for CPU is Ashes of Singularity, and there we could see 8700K on top with a high margin above 7700K, as it should be (+50% more cores).

Most other people here seem to have high end systems, so I figured I would do the tests so that people could get an idea of low end system benchmarks. It would be really really nice if SI could include a benchmarking mode in next years game. Lots of other big games have benchmarking modes, and with FM being a very processor-intensive game, it would be nice to get one for FM too.

I changed the processor in a week on Core i5-7600T 35W, which is why it now gives new results ;)

Would be interesting if people re-tested after applying the fix for the Meltdown  vulnerability to see what if any performance impact that has had on FM.

I'll be endevouring to the same at SI, but the more data the better.

Would be good to know if your PC has the PCID has the optimisation, I think (5th or 6th gen have that)

I re-did my tests for my i7-6700K build after confirming patch has been applied:

Original Test / Re-test

Benchmark A: 03:29 / 03:28

Benchmark B: 04:14 / 04:19

Benchmark C: 06:09 / 06:18

Can also confirm my PC reports PCID optimisation.

I think the variances in the results is just pure differences inside the save between the tests.

I'll be endevouring to the same at SI, but the more data the better.

Would be good to know if your PC has the PCID has the optimisation, I think (5th or 6th gen have that)

Hi EDL, was just looking for a thread on this.

Frequent frametime spikes while the game is processing, up into the 35ms range. Looks like you have some work to do.

The issue is not weak cores or poor IPC.

I have the 1600 OC'd to 3.8ghz, the I5 is running at a max boost of 3.5ghz and gets a very similar time

The difference of 300mhz would account for about a 10% difference in IPC in favour of intel over amd, benchmarks tend to agree with this point.

Therefore we can surmise that the game engine is only utilizing 4 cores...

4 cores with the highest possible IPC and clockspeed will net you the very best results

Yes, I meant IPC when writing my conclusions, but I did not write it specifically.

I have also noticed that the game uses maximum 4 cores. Or and up. I believe that this type of game should use as many cores as possible to maximize performance during power-ups.

I am not a pro about the specifics which are important for different kind of saves.  I have a i7 7700k, so the speed is quite fast when I do a save with all leagues playable with details level on minimum. Then I started a save where all leagues are playable and several competitions on max detail level (then FM uses the full simulation software I think. So there should be the big benefit of 6 core + over 4 cores) That's why amd is slower in this test. If there would be a test with a high detail level AMD with 6 or more cores should be much faster. Or am I wrong?
