Rob1981
So we all know Klose needs 1 goal to equal Ronaldo's all-time World Cup tally of 15, needs 2 to hold the record outright. Buffon becoms the third man named in squads at 5 World Cups, after Matthaus (1982-98) and Mexican keeper Antonio Carbajal (1950-66). Although he didn't play in France 98 so won't have the chance to actually play in 5 tournaments like those two did. Must be loads of others?
RubenJ
Messi needs 15 goals to break Ronaldo's record. Reckon he'll need all 7 matches to do it though.
JD nawrat
If Messi scores 15 goals at this World Cup not only will he break Ronaldo's record, he'll break Just Fontaine's record of 13 scored at one tournament
Bliss Seeker
Rooney needs 10 goals to equal Charlton's England record. Reckon he'll do it.
georginho_juventusygr
Buffon still will be the first choice in Russia.
Rob1981
He'll be 40 ffs. Surely there is someone else coming through.
ShyBaldBuddhist
Top African scorer in the finals is Roger Milla with 5 goals. Gyan only needs 2 goals to beat it which I think is possible.
Astafjevs
He'll be 40 ffs. Surely there is someone else coming through. Buffon is the GOAT But yeah, there's a load of young goalkeepers. One of which is in the squad this year.
Ty
Marchetti and Sirigu will be annoyed to be behind a 40 year old Buffon ffs
cms186
He'll be 40 ffs. Surely there is someone else coming through. Peter Shilton played ( and played extremely well ) for England in Italia 90 at the age of 41, wouldnt be unfeasible for gigi to do the same
georginho_juventusygr
Dino Zoff was 40 in 1982. There is nothing impossible.
PMLF
Brazil can equal Mexico's record of losing two World Cups at home. Mexico in 1970 and 1986, Brazil in 1950 and 2014.
Rob1981
Posted this somewhere else, but Colombia's surviving GK from USA 94 / France 98 Farid Mondragón has become the first player to be named in World Cup squads 20 years apart. That would be 6 WCs to Matthaus/Buffon/Carbajal's 5, except Colombia haven't qualified every time.
georginho_juventusygr
http://football-italia.net/50216/buffon-anything-can-happen-brazil “Is this my last World Cup? I sincerely hope not,” he told O Globo. “I have always said that I want to play until 40. “So if my body is still holding up, I would also like to play in the next one as well. I’m not thinking about retirement at all.”
robbert_o154
Read yesterday that three records have been broken in the second round; most second-round games going into extra time (5), most goals scored by substitute players (28) and it's the first time all 8 group winners have made it to the quarters. Razzler
I think we're on 6 OGs for the tournament, equaling a record? That could be beaten then
TM
Kevin De Bruyne created 10 chances against the USA, the most for a player in a World Cup match since 1982 according to OptaJoe Tim Howard made the most saves in a World Cup game (well since records started in 66) 15 in the same game
JD nawrat
I think we're on 6 OGs for the tournament, equaling a record? That could be beaten then Clarified this myself The record is indeed 6, made at the 1998 WC. Currently, there has been 5 (Marcelo, Kolasinac, Valladares, Boye, Yobo). However, David Luiz was attributed a goal in the 1-1 with Chile which many, including myself, would attribute to Jara of Chile instead, meaning the record would be tied at 6. But apparently it is officially Luiz's goal so the record is yet to be equalled.
LilSaint
Tim Howard made the most saves in a World Cup game (well since records started in 66) 15 in the same game All credit to him, amazing performance. Not very good for my heart or blood pressure though.
