markyosullivan
I hope it isn't true we've made a bid for Modric
matt1389
Modric to Chelsea :saywhatnow: Probably just recycled rumours because he looks like joining Madrid. I'm going to take any 'fresh' rumours with a pinch of salt for now. More important things to think about, like the new season and who will start the first game Defence and Torres are pretty straight forward. I assume the midfield will line up with Mikel, Lampard; Mata, Hazard, Ramires. Saying that, I wouldn't be surprised to see Ramires play in Mikel's place and Marin start. Marin not available for first game cause of hamstring. Oscar will start i think.
jmr
Ramires is not a defensive midfielder. Mikel has almost a guaranteed place in the first 11 because we can't play someone like Ramires or Oscar in his place or the defence will be completely exposed, and Essien and Romeu aren't going to be good enough, not yet anyway. matt1389
Obviously Ramires isn't a defensive midfielder, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him covering for Mikel in games where his dynamism from the middle can be just as effective as Mikel playing defensively. Wigan is one of those games I feel falls into that category.
jmr
We will always be a better balanced side with Mikel in the team right now though, you can't really just change that vs teams you expect to beat and not come unstuck at some point. It's possible to play Ramires there but I think it makes the team worse and way more exposed defensively, which is why I expect Mikel to have some of the highest amount of game time come the end of the season. Müller1469564937
Chelsea playing with 10 men almost every game then. Should be an exciting handicap to watch.
shanyi
Obviously Ramires isn't a defensive midfielder, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him covering for Mikel in games where his dynamism from the middle can be just as effective as Mikel playing defensively. Wigan is one of those games I feel falls into that category. With Lampard generally playing deeper these days, I'd say a Ramires - Lampard CM pairing offers a reasonable degree of protection. Not perfect, obviously, but I'd rather have them both in the team and Ramires playing centrally, where he's at his best IMO.
el sid
Same team as Community Shield. Oscar to be subbed in at some stage
Müller1469564937
Hopefully Mikel doesn't play like he did in the Community Shield, eh? Such a waste of space.
football_master_94
Tbf, most of the side played pretty poorly (below par/what we've come to expect from them) but yeah Mikel had a shocker.

Robokid87
Like Didier with Arsenal hopefully Newcastle were decent against Spurs, not sure how many of their first 11 will play in Athens in the week but if they're a bit tired that will help us. Obviously we know first hand how good and unpredictable they can be upfront so we need to be wary of that. If we were playing them with last season's squad I'd be a tad concerned about breaking them down defensively but hopefully the additions made can stop that being a problem
bridgekings
Phil what do you know about Joao Caminata? U18s beat City 6-1 this morning, fantastic result: http://thechels.info/wiki/Chelsea_6-1_Manchester_City_(2012-13_FA_Premier_Academy_League)
Ackter
Going to watch your U21s/reserves on the 1st. Has been over a year since I was at Stamford Bridge, will be nice to go back there.
thegr8anand
Cech; Ivanovic, David Luiz, Terry ©, Cole; Lampard, Mikel; Hazard, Mata, Bertrand; Torres Subs: Turnbull, Cahill, Ferreira, Essien, Meireles, Oscar, Sturridge Funny how Bertrand starts ahead of Raul, Oscar and Daniel.. bridgekings
Whats funny about it?
ReggaeBwoy
Bertrand is a good player. I am sure people would have doubted him starting in the Champions League final. Put in a very decent performance
Robokid87
Brilliant to see Bertrand start, much better than the alternatives (maybe except Sturridge).
football_master_94
Bertrand starting What's wrong with Rambo? Did he get a knock recently? Oscar bound to feature at some stage.
jaybob
Hoping for better performances from quite a few players today, Mikel was atrocious against City and Luiz's positioning seemed pretty bad as well and Cole had one of the worst games I've ever seen from him (although, tbf, he is excellent 99% of the time). thegr8anand
Whats funny about it? Why start him over others in mid?
Robokid87
What's wrong with Rambo? Did he get a knock recently? Ill from what I've heard; and Bertrand's starting because he's better than Meireles and Malouda, Oscar hasn't had time to settle in and he adds more defensive cover than Sturridge.
bridgekings
Why start him over others in mid? Balance. Need at least 1 member of the front 4 to be remotely interested in defending. Plus: Oscar has had one training session. Meireles is not a winger and playing him means dragging Mata wide. Start Sturridge and our attacking options off the bench are weak. el sid
Why start him over others in mid? Oscar isn't ready to start I'd imagine. Better than the others. Delighted for him. Score one today too Berty
thegr8anand
The only reason I think is because Mikel is so poor..
el sid
That's a rubbish reason. Mikel making his 200th domestic appearance, mark it with a goal lad

jmr
If this game started in the 7th minute we'd be really struggling. Can't get a hold of the ball at all.
thegr8anand
Yup, back to old stuff after 7 mins
jmr
That was a pretty poor performance. I dunno if the two early goals meant people slacked off or not but if we play like that vs a good side we'll get beat. Also don't really know what Mikel does in this side, he doesn't protect the back 4 at all.
thegr8anand
Good result in the end. Can only get better as the season progresses. Hazard and Oscar look excellent players and along with Mata should definitely be looking to start. Playing Bertrand was actually a very good decision as Mikel was his usual and Bert provided good defensive cover to Ashley and Terry who look sucidal at times. Even Cech at times Luiz and Bane were excellent as well. Only thing that needs to improve is instead of our defense holding the ball, should be midfield as time and again their passing led to mistakes and they along with Cech had to play long ball and lose posession in the end. Cech needs to stop trying that as well.
Robokid87
Decent enough, tried to overplay it in defence a lot though.
football_master_94
After the two goals, we basically looked like it was game over and just sat back content with what had happened which was disappointing (although, the 2nd half indicated more impetous and chance creation). Routine win, in all.

Robokid87
Good move for him provided he gets played ofc, iirc Mowbray likes his teams to play passing football, which fits into Roman's master plan nicely.
Marvin
I've only seen bits of pieces of McEachran but each time I've seen him he has looked very good for such a young player. What is his actual position though, is he attacking, defensive, box to box?
Ackter
No chance of him coming back in time to play at the match I'm going to, then?
kpain16
Josh is good. Gotta love his composure on the ball and decision making. Should be a nice addition to Boro squad.
jmr
Yeah good move for McEachran and Middlesbrough. We've done well with our loan deals this Summer which makes a nice change.
deez0r
Also on the Lampard goal watch he is now just 15 behind Tambling. 2 seasons I think he needs to get that target I reckon.
