Insipidus
He would have been regardless. I just dont like to see money pissed up the wall.
Rafalution
I dont like the idea of him on a long term contract. Why didnt we just give him two years? He'll be 33 then and hes not going to move on. We've cost ourselves a few million long term here I think. how long is it for now?
Insipidus
That is what I'm not sure about, but to my grossly tuned ears "long term future" sounds like 4 to 5 years. There may be certain clauses about games played before the next year activiated, for example, but if im along the right lines I find it hard to justify that approach over a 2 year contract now with the possibility for an extension when it runs out. I am incredibly fearful of either Gerrard becoming badly injured or losing all his athletic abilities in the next few years and us having a big contract on our hands for no real reason. morology
He's our talisman. Having him in training with the kids, or on the bench once he's no longer able to start every week, will be worth whatever they're paying him.
dudester
I thought the long term future was alluding to continuing past his playing days in a role at the club.

Select_screen_name:
He's dragged us out the **** so many times, a nice little golden handshake IF he does lose his abilities near the end of career is no biggy. United done it wil Neville, Scholes and what looks like to be Giggs now.
Divinity
Ha, to think people were indignant about ******* money away on certain players, now they're happy to **** money away on someone who's been suitably rewarded his whole career.

Jongi
that piece is hardly conclusive as to how much longer his playing contract has been extended by making it really difficult to say whether money is being wasted or not.

bell
He could go for another 5 years if used properly. He perhaps wont play week in week out in a couple of years, but I presume he has looked after himself well enough and may go to his late 30s. The really top players often do. He certainly has enough intelligence to his game to adapt as his athleticism starts to go down.

I definitely expect that as time goes on he will play deeper and be the one to ping the ball around for us keep it moving and the early telling ball. Rafalution
Any news on Spearing's injury? nope there has been nothing. edit: according to rawk there was a press conference today and Kenny said doubtful for stoke but back in a week. Honestly would be quite happy to see Coady given a go, we don't have anyone else who can do the holding role, unless we decide to go three at the back (or stick Aurelio in there). Alternatively, Coady is 10 years younger than me and makes me feel old so on that basis he should be taken out back and shot. Would actually be quite happy with 3 at the back and give Coates a chance, I feel we really need to see more of him so we know if we need to be looking for anyone in the summer. Insipidus
If we're going three at the back it should really be Kelly as the third im my opinion.
Rafalution
I think given how much we spent on Coates we really need to see how good he is. Otherwise we end the season with him as our potential third choice CB and no idea how much he has adapted. We may well be in a position where we don't need a single defender in the summer, but that would be with Kelly as 3rd FB and Coates 3rd CB.

Kopite
I'd play him tomorrow. Looked good when we beat them at their place in the carling cup apart from one error. He's a young lad and we need to accept he will make mistakes but hopefully learn from them.

dudester
Reina, Enrique, Coates, Carragher, Skrtel, Johnson, Adam, Henderson, Downing, Gerrard, Kuyt. Subs: Aurelio, Carroll, Doni, Shelvey, Kelly, Flanagan, Bellamy. Hoofball If Gerrard doesn't do anything today I fail to see where a goal would come from? Dirk who hasn't scored since april or may?
Insipidus
Quite disappointed with that starting XI. No Agger or Maxi whatsoever, and leaving out Carroll when this should one of his earmarked games is odd. That is even more the case when we are likely to have Carragher putting his boot through the ball every time possible.
Rafalution
Agger injured or rested?
why?
Hope that's 3 at the back rather than Carra in midfield.
Insipidus
Cripes. Hadnt even thought of that. Its possibly more viable given the inclusion of Downing too.

why?
I can't work that team out at all. Could be anything from 4-1-4-1 to 3-5-2, 5-2-3 or heaven knows what. Just hope it isn't one of those frustrating games.
foofighter23
that really is a poor starting 11 there. actually hope it is carra in mid cos 5 at the back at home to stoke just doesnt make sense to me. tho either position doesnt instill confidence in carra lately.
DeafParrot
I can't work that team out. I actually do think it'll be Carragher in front of the back 4.
DeafParrot
One things for sure though, if anyone is really on about us not buying anyone in this window, just look at the side. So, so desperate for a striker and defensive midfielder. And I'd still like a winger. Mon Hoilett.
