Introduction

Welcome to a sign up game - with a twist! Cliched start, I know, but here’s the deal - the basic idea of a lot of sign ups is that you create a footballing starlet who is entered into the database with a really high PA, and follow his career as he develops into a world-renowned superstar. But what would happen if we introduced a bit of chance into the proceedings? A kind of footballing genetics lottery, if you will?

The basic premise of this sign up is that your player will not necessarily end up as a footballing god. All players will be assigned the same CA - but a randomly generated PA. Your player may be the best player in the history of Real Madrid - or he might be a footnote in the history of Rochdale.

So, all you have to do is create a striker using the form below. Then follow your players unpredictable career trajectory and find out if you get to score goals in the World Cup Final... or the 1st Round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. And remember - it could be you... who’s crap!

this is the interesting part for me. if we ALL have the same CA and i'm guessing by the spread os the leagues that this will be around 80-100 (?) then you are going to see very different careers from the guys who opted to start out the climb to stardom with a headstart in a good league at a big club - MLS (12) or the guy who decided to start down in the lowest of the low leagues - BSS, BSN (3) or scottish third! (2)

im guessing the training at the big clubs will be way better but with limited game time, whereas the guys at teh bottom of the pyramid will get a full season, but will be training down the local park! (i actually live in bromley, the team i chose to join in this, and thats not too far away from the description of their facilities!) icon_biggrin.gif If i get a good PA, will the lack of facilities hinder my development?

we'll see!

bring it on, this looks very interesting

GazTheDoood - I think you wanted your starting club to be Zenit St. Petersburg. Unfortunately (or fortunately if you are a Zenit fan), they are too good to be your starting club on this sign up. The reason I didn't want anyone starting at top division clubs is in case they are assigned a low PA - I didn't want to risk anyone being at a top side but having a low PA, having their contract terminated because they weren't good enough to play for that club, and then not being signed once they were unattached - and ending up retiring at 18. That doesn't make for a fun game for anyone! So, you can choose a club from the Russian First Division rather than the Russian Premier League, or any other club/league you want from the list in one of my opening posts, or I can randomly assign one to you if you like. As Zenit will be listed as your favourite club, you might well still end up there scoring goals in the Champions League later in your career if you are good enough! Sorry about that.

Thats fair enough, just assign me a random Russian club then.

Ta for letting me know icon14.gif

Hey folks. I was slightly delayed with completing the database because of a job application I had to sort out - but it's finally finished! That means that the sign-up is now closed - we can't take on any more players.

I'm just going to start a game to check everything out and make sure there aren't any obvious mistakes, and we'll be good to go for tomorrow.

valencia - I think I'm going to keep both the standard CA and the range of PA that I used under wraps for the time being - just so there's just that little bit more surprise as to what your player is going to turn out like.

foost - I absolutely think the quality of the club's facilities is going to have some effect on the speed with which a player reaches their potential.

I guess that's the gamble with going for a higher league over a lower league - you may well play more in a lower league, but the service you get won't be great and the facilities will be poor. On the other hand, at a higher league side you may play less initially, but the facilities will be better and the other players may well provide better service. It's all swings and roundabouts I suppose.

phnompenhandy - I agree, I think that the "faithful servant" type players will probably move if a big club comes in for them, but they won't be demanding it as much as a "bad boy" might. I actually think one of the best characters in terms of fulfilling career potential is the "lone wolf" - they won't necessarily be causing trouble all the time - but they won't be afraid to make it clear that they want a move if they see it as in their own best interests.

Looking forward to getting it all going tomorrow! icon14.gif

Okay, well, everything seems to be in order. I'll be putting up screenshots of everybody's profile a little bit later on (got to go out for some lunch first) - but here's a little bit of news and some preliminary statistics for you:

News

Jim Alex was released on a free transfer by MLS side Colorado Rapids. However, the Scot shouldn't take too long to find a new club, with Arbroath, Berwick, Dumbarton, Forfar and Stirling all apparently interested in offering a contract.

Players in the Russian league have got a headstart on their rivals as the Russian season is already in full swing. Eduardo Van Hatetaylor leads the way with 7 goals from 20 appearances with his club side Baltika, while David Rosing-Schow is close behind with 6 from 14 starts for Avangard Kursk. Another striker in the Russian leagues, Vladimir Gazchenko of Nosta, has only made one substitute appearance so far.

Speaking of players in Russia - both Van Hatetaylor and Rosing-Schow have slight concerns about the clubs they are currently at - both are content at the club currently, but may be eager to move given a chance. Rosing-Schow is locked in to a contract until December 2010, but as Van Hatetaylor is on a rolling month-to-month contract, he could easily make a move should the opportunity present itself.

Thanks for all the positive comments everyone, I appreciate it - and I'm glad that everyone's enjoying it!

valencia - I'm actually running this on a Mac - for what it's worth it's a 1.42GHz PowerPC G4 iBook with 768MB of RAM. It's a lot of leagues and it does take quite a long time to process - but mainly I'm going to be leaving it running on holiday overnight or while I'm doing other stuff so it doesn't matter too much how long it takes. icon14.gif

Update for July 2007

News

Alex signs for Stirling - Stirling have snapped up young Scottish striker Jim Alex on a free transfer. The youngster had been available on a free since his contract with MLS side Colorado was not renewed during the summer. Alex made a good impression on his new employers as he scored Stirling's only goal in a 2-1 defeat by Irish side Longford Town. Barring injury problems, he is now expected to slot straight into the side for the start of their Scottish First Division campaign. Alex rejected offers from Queen's Park, Arbroath, Berwick, and Forfar.

Updated Profile - Jim Alex, Stirling

Youngsters sign professional deals - Exeter's Buster Bloodhound, Plymouth's Andy Ahmed, Aldershot's Adam C and Swansea's Ky Smitkinov have all put pen to paper on their first professional deals, securing their future at their current clubs. All four have signed full-time contracts, meaning they can now devote all of their time to football.

Speculation about future increases as players turn down new contracts - Two young strikers have recently seen a flurry of speculation about their future as they turned down new deals from their current clubs. Welsh striker Andrew Billen, currently on a youth contract with Italian side Sassuolo, and English forward James Mathews, who is contracted to Australian club Adelaide United, have both rejected their clubs' advances to sign a first professional deal. Many people are now wondering if this indicates a desire to move on from their current sides.

Rosing-Schow suffers minor injury - Avangard Kursk striker David Rosing-Schow suffered a twisted knee in training, and missed his sides' Russian First Division games against Shinnik and Terek. Club doctors expect the youngster to be out for a further week with the injury.

Van Hatetaylor and Ahmed offered out on loan - Eduardo Van Hatetaylor, of Russian club Baltika, and Plymouth striker Andy Ahmed have both been offered out on loan to their respective clubs' feeder teams - Baltika-Tarko and Tiverton. It remains to be seen whether the players accept these proposed loan moves.

Update for July 2007

Comment, Opinion and Analysis

Unfortunately, the loan deals for Eduardo Van Hatetaylor and Andy Ahmed, if they go ahead, will take them outside of the leagues I am running for this sign-up - meaning that any goals they score while on loan won't count towards their career totals. On the other hand, hopefully that first team experience will help them improve faster. In Van Hatetaylor's case, it doesn't make a great deal of sense on his club's part, since he's playing regularly in their first team and has scored 9 goals in 20 appearances - not spectacular, but not bad in a bottom half of the table team. But who are we to question the almighty FM?

Generally, the players who are actually worth some money on the value list are the players who have either already signed professional contracts or who have agreed to sign on a specified date. Therefore, we can expect everyone to join as soon as they get round to signing their first contracts - if you're not on it yet, don't worry.

Why have Billen and Mathews turned down contract offers from their clubs? There might be a few explanations for this - a) it could be that they are high PA players and are angling for a move to a bigger club, b) it could be that they are high PA players or lower PA players who think a lot of themselves and therefore the contract offer doesn't match up to what they expect to receive, or c) as both players are British but are playing abroad, maybe they just don't fit in there? The last explanation is least likely, since they are both "Globetrotters" so should be perfectly happy playing abroad. Anyone got any other ideas?

With a lot of leagues kicking off in the next month, there should be more goalscorers on the goalscorers table in the next update, which should be interesting. icon14.gif

just a point - how did you implement the personality types? the 'bad boy' one i can guess - high controversy ratings etc but how did you do 'globetrotter' etc? or are you not at liberty to disclose yet? icon_wink.gif

i agree that the loans dont make much sense. hopefully for those concerned they will fall through. the start of the english season in particular will be interesting!

maybe there should be some sort of 'achiever of the year' or 'underachiever of the year' award you could hand out. either on a calender year basis like the world player of the year or at the end of the season. might add a bit of spice.
