Right cool.

Budget is 300-400.

Only looking to play a few nations really. Always played 2d

Will only be used for FM and general browsing

Best I can find under £400 is this. Its a refurb model and still isn't brilliant, but everything else I've been able to finder under £400 is ranging from terrible to bad.

I know very little about this site, but their trustpilot reviews suggest they're trustworthy.

I was thinking about something ...
Can the simplest monitor and its specifications (hertz) cause lags in the match engine? I am suffering with lags both at the very high and at the very low (graphic settings).

Because my monitor is a Dell SE2216H - Standard, I have a good computer: I5 9 generation 2.9 ghz, video card Geforce 1650 GTX, 16 GB RAM. My video card by Nvidia's panel configuration shows that the game runs at Very High and the processing (days pass, screen flow) between everything is very good. Would anyone know how to answer?

Thanks for your help. Yeah I haven't really considered refurbs

I've just been sent this would you recommend? https://www.argos.co.uk/product/1959318?clickSR=slp:term:laptop:35:36:1

I'm only looking for any kind of upgrade on the 8 year old cheap laptop I'm currently playing on haha.

Thanks again.

Yes, that would be quite an improvement.

Had a quick google, the CPU is very weak lower rated than a desktop CPU I have here from 2009 so I expect if it does even work the performance will not be good.

The demo is availble for free for you to try though, thats always the best thing to check

This is the best I can find at any of those stores: https://www.amazon.co.uk/HUAWEI-MateBook-Multi-Screen-Collaboration-Fingerprint/dp/B08HR3W84V/ref=sr_1_21?dchild=1&keywords=ryzen+5+4500u&qid=1606846090&s=computers&sr=1-21

The equivalent in Currys, which is out of stock and slightly more expensive: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-flex-5-14-2-in-1-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-256-gb-ssd-teal-10208569-pdt.html

Bear in mind, these aren't gaming laptops, but should manage the 3D match graphics at medium or higher.

Great, thanks very much mate!  I've just seen the below available on John Lewis which is just about within budget - would you mind letting me know your thoughts please?  I was unsure in the processor as the spec says it runs 1.6GHz to 4.2GHz but FM requires a minimum of 1.8GHz, so not sure if that's sufficient?

I wouldn't recommend it.  With the base clock speed being below the SI recommended specs, if it gets throttled under load you're likely to see less than ideal performance.  Plus, it will be rubbish for the 3D match engine due to the weak integrated graphics capability.

I'd personally still recommend the one at Amazon that I linked previously as this will be far better.  However, if that is outside your budget then let me know what your actual budget and I'll see what I can find.

Okay thanks very much - I'll take a look at the Amazon one again.  Had an issue where the voucher I'm using from work is no longer available to use at Amazon and Currys, so I can only use it at John Lewis (or a couple other department stores which have very limited stock) - I would struggle to stretch to a £650 whereas I have £500 voucher I can use at John Lewis and don't mind putting in another £100-£200 cash.  Is there anything on John Lewis you'd recommend at all in the £500-£700 range?

Appreciate your help again!

Hi guys, looking to spend £400-£500 on a new laptop as my 10+ year old Sony Vaio is struggling to keep up these days.

I play on 2d so graphics aren't too important, just need something that's relatively quick at processing and doesn't lag.

Spotted these two on this thread on the last couple of pages and both look decent, would anyone recommend one over the other? Or anything else out there that would be better? Thanks for the help!

They're both effectively the same spec, although looking at the Argos one I believe it comes in Windows 10 S mode (it doesn't mention this in the Argos listing, but I've seen the same one on another site and that suggests it's Windows 10 S.  So, if you buy that one you'll need to follow this guide to get it out of S mode to enable it to install apps from outside the Microsoft store):

I have Mac Mini (2018) and I'm interested in bying a separate graphics card to be able to run  the game at the highest graphics level.

I'm looking at a Radeon RX 570 Red Dragon 4GB, would that be a good choice and allow me to run the 3D match engine at the highest level?

That would be fine for FM's 3D graphics - just check that your Mac allows installation of a dedicated graphics card before committing to the purchase.

Just a quick one, do you this one could be worth it for the extra £150?

Thanks very much - you think that laptop is decent value for money and would be able to run at a decent speed with a medium database across a few countries with 3D matches?

One more question from me (and that'll be it!) is with the US banning business with Huawei, is there any risk of Microsoft updates etc being cut in Huawei devices?  Not sure if I'm just being worried about nothing!

The way I'd put it is that it's the best you'll get for the money at John Lewis, based on the stock I can see on their website.  It's certainly not quite as good as the Amazon one.

May be worth seeing if they still do their price promise, as it's £100 cheaper directly from Huawei: https://consumer.huawei.com/uk/laptops/matebook-d-15-amd/buy/?skucode=80440114010001001&gclid=CjwKCAiAwrf-BRA9EiwAUWwKXqHNojVV2f8RJpwsrcaezTd4GTzBya1zcxupzJ3sHBYJBtrE3x9BSRoCL8QQAvD_BwE

It certainly will be no slouch and should run the 3D at medium settings at least.

I don't know to be honest.  I think you'd need to look into that more closely.

Just seen this one I'd missed..... seems to be the same spec as the Huawei (but 14" display rather than 15.6") so perhaps go for this instead, especially as it's quite a bit cheaper.

Hello, after years of playing on an ancient laptop with one league in two dimensions, and after not getting on at all with the Xbox version, I've decided to buy a new laptop. Predominantly it will be for football manager, but I would like to be able to effectively play RTS games; Age of Empires and such. Plus anything else which really grabs my fancy.

Anyway, I know nothing about this kind of stuff, but have identified a Lenovo Legion 5P as my number one target. Only 8GB of Ram, which I'm led to understand isn't great, but apparently everything else is good. Maybe? These are the specs.

  • AMD Ryzen 7 4800H Processor
  • RAM: 8 GB / Storage: 256 GB SSD
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB
  • 208 FPS when playing Fortnite at 1080p
  • Full HD screen / 144 Hz

Please could anyone who knows about this kind of stuff tell me if this would be okay for my needs? I'm not expecting to be able to run all leagues, but I would like to run 3-5 fairly fast, and be able to play in 3d. Also the RTS games as was alluded to earlier. Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks.

I don't suppose you know enough to know if it would be worth the money/the best option do you? Like I say, I know nothing about this, and can only afford it paying in installments, so any help/advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I mean, this is worse, right?

  • Intel® Core™ i5-10300H Processor
  • RAM: 8 GB / Storage: 256 GB SSD
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti 4 GB
  • 152 FPS when playing Fortnite at 1080p
  • Full HD screen / 144 Hz

Or is it? It's 50 quid cheaper, anyway.

The only one of those to consider would be this one: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-14-cf2508sa-14-laptop-intel-core-i3-256-gb-ssd-silver-10215345-pdt.html

All the others have a base clock speed below the requirements for FM21 so you may find them throttling and impacting the performance.

That said, I'd still recommend the refurb on I posted more specs wise if you want to play in 3D, as the processor in that one has better integrated graphics.  If you don't play in 3D, there's not much between them.

I'm so indecisive but I promise I'm going to buy whatever is recommended haha

Right whatever one is the best performing laptop I'm getting haha promise, cheers for the help

Hi, my custom build pc of 5 years + mobo seems to have given out so I'm looking into a good laptop. I mainly game FM these days, but playing a bit of crusader kings 3 recently. I'd like something capable of playing decent games should I want to, but only needs to run FM 21 "well".

I think this looks a good deal but not an expert...https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/gaming/pc-gaming/gaming-laptops/acer-nitro-5-an515-54-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i5-gtx-1650-256-gb-ssd-10205925-pdt.html

Ideally I'd spend a little less and know I probably could just to run fm21 but ideally I'd like a proper 'gaming' laptop as I've not had one before.

Any thoughts on the above performance for the cost and any other suggestions welcome.

That meets the recommended requirements for Crusader Kings 3, which is overall the more demanding of the 2 games you've mentioned.  That's a pretty good deal in fairness, and I'd say snap it up.

Good on ya. I dont remember which one that was. But if you can find the Benchmark thread for FM21 and post your result it would be extremely helpfulz if you have the time.

If anyone is considering buying a Mac, then I can tell you the new MacBook Air (and Pro) with the M1 chip works amazingly good.

I was playing FM20 on a MacBook Pro from 2019, but recently bought the new Air with M1 - and its a huge improvement. Also the Air does not have a ventilator - so it is not blowing anymore like a hairdryer when you play FM. The Pro still has a ventilator, so not sure if that will start making noise.

The Air is therefore my recommendation, in case you want to play FM21 on MacBook :)

The top one in terms of CPU and graphics card.

Thanks, it is definitely a good deal for what you get. I'm just pondering if it's a good enough of a deal to warrant spending a bit more than I planned. It exceeds what I need to play FM comfortably and I would imagine that it would more than comfortably run CK3. I only really need it to run fm21 fast and the match engine well (21 3d engine is a godsend as compared to previous years!).

Could I get thoughts on these...

Obviously I appreciate CEX are refurbished and therefore bound to be cheaper and have a shorter lifespan, but value for money wise are any of these better than the one I'm looking at...https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/gaming/pc-gaming/gaming-laptops/acer-nitro-5-an515-54-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i5-gtx-1650-256-gb-ssd-10205925-pdt.html which is brand new and around £100 more expensive.

Thanks for your help

Thanks, it is definitely a good deal for what you get. I'm just pondering if it's a good enough of a deal to warrant spending a bit more than I planned. It exceeds what I need to play FM comfortably and I would imagine that it would more than comfortably run CK3. I only really need it to run fm21 fast and the match engine well (21 3d engine is a godsend as compared to previous years!).

This one basically has the previous gen versions of the CPU and graphics card from the brand new one at Currys.  The newer ones will obviously offer enhanced performance over the older models, but I'd say this one offers good value for money, and it does apparently have a 24 month warranty.  The graphics card is above the minimum requirements for Crusader Kings 3, but below the recommended so you'll likely need to turn down some of the graphics settings in that game to ensure smooth performance.

The middle one (MSI model) appears to be identical in terms of spec, so given the price difference compared to the Asus model. I'd disregard it.

The last one has an older processor still and ranks quite a lot lower on notebook check, so I personally would avoid that.

I would like to Play the FM21, there are two options to choose from: a notebook with AMD Ryzen 5 3500U 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD between 450-500 € or a PC with AMD Ryzen 3 3200G 16GB RAM 256 GB SSD for 300 €. I want to play with 10 leagues and use 3D mode. I only want to use it for the games FM21, EU4 and Office. Which of the above are faster?
