FM24 - PC/Laptop advice thread *** PLEASE READ OPENING POST BEFORE POSTING ***

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I would like to buy a new laptop but I need to make sure if it runs the game perfectly? If not, is it good enough to run the game?

This is the device: Asus VivoBook Flip 14 TP412FA 2-in-1 Laptop.

Please check the specifications of the device. I read the minimum requirements of the game but unfortunetly I can't determine whether this device good enough for the game or not.

Thanks  ❤️

Can you provide a link to the one you're looking at please?  That model number has several configurations, so until I know what the specs are I can't pass comment.

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if you could help me out. I'm looking for a laptop to use for University, as well as to play FM21 on the side. My budget is up to £1300.

Could somebody look at this one I have found, and let me know if it is any good, or if I can get better elsewhere. Also, is i7 significantly better than i5, and is it worth the upgrade?

I'd steer clear of that.

Base clock speed below the SI stated requirements for FM21, so although it may well run the game you will likely not get very good performance.  Plus, only 4GB RAM, which isn't ideal.

This is a pure laptop as opposed to a 2-in-1, but for a slightly lower price this is miles ahead in terms of spec: https://www.jarir.com/sa-en/computers-tablets/laptops/msi-modern-14-laptops-554660.html

Hi guys

Great thread, thanks for all the help you guys give. Looking for something between 700/900 euro in Ireland. Obviously a good few examples in here in that range. They are all linked to box.co.uk, and on trust pilot there is reports they don't deliver to Ireland despite saying they do. Would there be any equivalent Irish sites/stores, or any recommendations in that price range?

Looking at sort of lower end laptops to run fm21 will probably be solely for playing fm. Looking for someone who’s a bit more clued up in the laptop field to let me know if this laptops any good, any help is appreciated:)

That processor will do the job. It won't be amazingly quick, but it'll run the game and has decent integrated graphics. My biggest concern would be the meagre storage space.

I suggest this as an alternative: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/acer-aspire-3-a314-22-14-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-256-gb-ssd-black-10209211-pdt.html

I can't guarantee this is the best deal, as I don't know the Irish stores, but this is a good spec within the price range: https://euronics.ie/product/hp-15inch-ryzen-5-gaming-laptop-15-ec1008na/

No.

Thanks, I've just bought all the parts for a new gaming PC (and work) and it's the first time I've gone for 32GB of memory.

I'm quite excited so I'm going to give it the big one:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800x
  • CPU COOLER: NZXT Kraken X63 280mm AIO
  • MEMORY: Corsair Vengeance Pro 3600mhz 32GB (4*8GB)
  • MOTHERBOARD: Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming
  • STORAGE: Gigabyte AORUS 1TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD/Solid State Drive (two of these)
  • GPU: MSI GeForce RTX™ 3070 SUPRIM X 8G
  • PSU: Corsair AX860i Digital ATX 80 PLUS® PLATINUM
  • CASE: NZXT H710 White/Black

My PC has been broken since October so I've not bought FM2021 at launch which is the first time I've not bought FM/CM at launch in over 20 years, can't wait to see how well this performs over my old i7 4790k (and 980ti which is of course, completely irrelevant for FM).

Well that's enough willy waving, can't wait to take Torquay to the Prem!

Any thoughts on this one:

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/hp-m01-f0027na-desktop-pc-amd-ryzen-5-1-tb-hdd-256-gb-ssd-black-10207972-pdt.html

One of the reviews says "The graphics card assigns 2Gb of RAM just to itself, whether it needs it or not, which is a shame." Given FM21 requires 4gb to run, would that make it hard to do any browsing or play music while it's running?

Hello guys, i‘m looking for a new PC for playing fm. I dont know which CPU is the best for my Budget, Intel or AMD. I have two that fit my budget and should be just as good. the i7 9700k and the ryzen r7 3700x. ryzen has the larger cache and seems to be a bit faster than intel in many benchmarks. intel however has an integrated gpu, which in my opinion can be the decisive advantage. the fm probably only uses the gpu in 3D mode. since i don't use this mode, an iGPU should be sufficient.

what is your opinion about it? both cpu's cost about the same, amd is a bit faster, but has no iGPU, so i need a dedicated gpu with amd which costs additional money. or does a gpu bring a boost to the game and is not only used for 3d?

Thank you for your help in advance.

It shouldn't cause any issues, unless you have masses of Chrome tabs open at once.  I think the reviewer to be honest is not correct on how the processor works in this case - I believe the integrated GPU has 2GB of dedicated RAM, on top of the system RAM - but I could be mistaken.

The Ryzen 5 3400G is a very good choice for someone looking for a budget desktop build.  The processor itself is decent (not top of the range by any means, but definitely no slouch), whilst packing in very strong integrated graphics.  Again, not a match for a modern dedicated graphics card, but will play a number of modern titles if you turn the settings down a little, but should be strong enough to play FM at higher settings.

They do seem to score closely in benchmarks - the i7 seem to have the edge in terms of single core performance, but the Ryzen seems to beat it in multi-core scores.

As you say, the Intel does have an integrated GPU, but it is very weak and you will likely need to play 3D at lower settings.

A dedicated graphics card will not boost the performance in terms of processing speed, but will enable you to play 3D at higher settings.  As you've stated you only play in 2D, then this is likely not of a concern to you unless you're thinking of playing other games in which case you will likely need to include a dedicated graphics card.

Neither of these.

For the Acer - the CPU is terrible and will be slow for anything, never mind FM.

The Lenovo - the CPU is still pretty poor but a lot better than the other one.  However, this is a Windows 10 S laptop (Windows 10 S only allows you to download apps off of the Microsoft Store, which rules out Steam or Epic, and by extension FM).  You can take it out of S mode, but the storage of 128GB may be an issue.

If you don't mind going for a refurbished unit, this offers much better value: https://www.laptopstation.co.uk/product/laptops/s145-15iwl-5/

The CPU will be a bit stronger so will run FM quicker (and things in general).  Plus you get 8GB RAM.

However, if you want to go for a brand new one, the best I can find under £300 is this one: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-3-14-laptop-amd-athlon-gold-128-gb-ssd-grey-10207999-pdt.html

You'll need to contend with the smaller storage and it having 4GB RAM, plus you'll need to take it out of S mode as per here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/switching-out-of-s-mode-in-windows-10-4f56d9be-99ec-6983-119f-031bfb28a307

I can't give it a wholehearted recommendation, but it does meet the minimum requirements for FM.

What leagues Would you be able to run with ease?

As per the original post:

"There is no way to know for certain how many Leagues/Divisions/Database size or how fast the game will progress. One user may be happy with the game progressing a week in 20 minutes, for others that may be too slow, so It's all subjective."

However, the CPU in that scores very highly on benchmarking sites.  There's not much around which can top it (currently ranks 26th overall on Notebookcheck).  Plus, 16GB RAM which is very nice and a 1660Ti graphics card, which is more than adequate for FM.  Less than a grand too, so well priced.

It's Windows 10 S that has the restrictions, the Home and Pro editions don't.

They tend to put the S edition on lower priced computers, but as per the link above it can be taken out of S mode quite easily.

Yes.  The demo is the same as the full game, except with the restriction that you can only play 6 months.

So, if your laptop runs the demo, it will run the full retail release.

Should be fine. You can always reduce some settings if you need to - there's sometimes a balance you will have to find.

Windows OS isn't restrictive.

Windows 10 in S mode is a version of Windows 10 that's streamlined for security and performance, while providing a familiar Windows experience. To increase security, it allows only apps from the Microsoft Store, and requires Microsoft Edge for safe browsing.

Don't you only get to play 1 nation with the demo? If more leagues/divisions/larger database is added it might be slower.

I'm downloading the demo now to see what's involved :)

Must admit, I wasn't sure of that restriction.  I don't think I've downloaded the demo since FM08.  I've either bought the game or not!

I'll need to check as not really clued up on it.  Graphics card isn't what the min spec is and processor is 1.6ghz I believe.

Not expecting to run the game perfect but even at all as its for my son and not 100% sure he will play it all the time so don't want to go but a laptop just for this

Hit the Window key on the keyboard. And then type in DXDIAG and run the programme. Once it's finished hit Save All Information.

It will save a text file. Then attach that to the forum.

Hey all,

Looking to get a new laptop as my PC Specialist is about 6 years old now and at 17.3 inches I also want something a bit more portable. The spec of that is:

Intel i7 4710MQ - 2.5ghz 4 core 8 logical

12 GB RAM

100GB SSD / 1TB Storage

Geforce FTX 860M

I've been looking around all morning and this seems like quite a good deal for the price? https://www.box.co.uk/NH.Q7PEK.002-Acer-Nitro-5-AN515-55-764B_2934864.html

I want to be able to comfortably play FM with quite a lot of leagues and full 3D and then possibly use the laptop to play a few more games but nothing demanding. Would love to get anyone's thoughts on the above, and suggestions to alternatives if you think it's not so good...

Cheers

That's excellent, but this is a bit better (slightly stronger CPU) and as a bonus is a bit cheaper: https://www.box.co.uk/ASUS-TUF-Gaming-A15-FA506IU-HN255T_2940904.html

Thanks, I hadn't seen that one! A final curveball is I've just designed one to this spec at PC Specialist... Would be £925. An even better CPU, more storage, double the RAM. I think the GFX are slightly worse but might not be a major issue... what do you think?

Thanks, I hadn't seen that one! A final curveball is I've just designed one to this spec at PC Specialist... Would be £925. An even better CPU, more storage, double the RAM. I think the GFX are slightly worse but might not be a major issue... what do you think?

There's not much in it CPU-wuse between that and the Ryzen in the one at Box, so I think it depends on what games you're wanting to play as there is a bit of a gap between the 1650 and the 1660Ti.

Hi, first and foremost apologies if someone has already asked about this laptop.

After over a 5 year sabbatical from FM I bought the Touch version for Xbox and I'm back!

I did a benchmark test and it said this laptop would be fine apart from the graphics card not being the strongest, yet acceptable. Keen to hear what you guys think.

For clarity, I have, and will only play one country in a save so I dont need a huge database. Perhaps more than one division but I wouldn't be looking for tonnes of leagues. Buying a laptop purely for FM so don't wish to spend beyond £400. Something that runs smoothly, can handle a slightly reduced 3D quality ME is fine by me. 20 minutes for a week to pass? No problem. I'd be scribbling in my notebook whilst playing because I'm an all in pro like that Haha

Thanks

The base clock speed is below what SI suggests, which does mean you'd be taking a risk.  Doesn't mean it won't work though.  But for that reason, I can't recommend it.

It's also Windows 10 S, so you'll need to follow the instructions to switch it out of S mode to be able to install Steam or Epic to enable you to install FM.

I currently can't find anything at under £400 to recommend to be honest, so whatever you go for is taking a bit of a punt.

Fair enough! Cheers for getting back to me. I am such a novice in this area as I haven't used a laptop for years. Tbf I'm more than happy with the xbox version for now given where my current save is based and my next one will be. I can't justify spending more than that currently to have the extra interactions with players and media and faces for some leagues etc. Different if it was for more than one game but yeah.

👍

Apologies for jumping straight back in but what should I be looking out for when searching. I know it's the CPU speed that seems low often on the budget laptops but where do I find it on the spec on this one for instance...

I have no idea where it says, guessing it's not the processor speed?

Hopefully does the job.

Yep, that'll be absolutely fine.
