If there's no blood, are you really having fun

"Running with scissors in a mosh pit" is the perfect description.

This is easily the most fun I've had with a tactic in ages.  I can't wait until the team is truly built for it...

Sevilla relegated while Sabadell stay up...2048 is a mad, mad world.  Suffice to say, we're a long way from 2017(ish) when Sevilla nearly became eligible (which would have made me oh so happy).

A long overdue glance around Europe...

Chelsea draw on the final matchday to win the title on goal difference, Valencia are the first non-Virus/Barcelona side to win La Liga since 2030/31 (Villarreal), Frankfurt ran away with the title in Germany, PSG's slow demise continues, while Milan continue their resurgence.

2047/48 Season Review

No one, not even my most ardent supporters, saw this coming.  Even Toothless Bob -- who moved to Bruges to partake in what he was sure would be a glorious run -- has had every expectation smashed to glorious bits, at such an early stage.  Now that his legal troubles are behind him (for the moment, at least)  Toothelss/Belgian Bob can join in the revelry.

Part of it certainly has to do with the quality of the opposition.  But, the upper echelons of the Belgian domestic leagues are no pushover.  Once this squad is built to match my desires, it's going to be immense.  We've got Champions League football next year, and something to build from.

That being said, the side is bloated and way too old.  We need some youth, and I'm looking to promote several players from within.

There's something happening here, in the Venice of the North.  Our European coefficient is in great shape thanks to several recent Champions League knockout round appearances under my predecessors, so I hope to hit the ground running.  We may have an "off" year though, as I blood young prospects for our 2nd XI.  Given the sheer number of domestic matches, we need a full squad to compete on two fronts.

Goals for 2048/49: Challenge for the Jupiler Pro League title.  Qualify for the Champions League knockout rounds.

Champions League Review

Another fantastic Champions League year.  Only this time, no one became eligible.  Instead, Roma won the lot -- the first time since 2025 that the AI has won it with an eligible side (after Arsenal in 2020, Man City in 2023, PSG in 2025).  They've come on strong in Italy with Milan, with the slow reversion to form at Fiorentina.  Bottom line, another great year.  I feel like Leipzig is going to become eligible at some point, which I'm not necessarily pleased with.  Much rather see West Brom get there!

He's just not good enough, and that 12 for reflexes is readily apparent on the pitch.

I'm very excited about the prospect of replacing him this summer.  Or, at the very least, finding the player who will take over after next year.

I'm going to do a squad review at the end of the summer, once I've had a chance to bring in my players (including some who will be promoted from within) and get rid of some of the dead weight.

Agility and Command of Area are pretty poor too. But who needs a good defense when you create as many chances as you do on Overload?

$850k from Viitorul.  Could be a massive steal.  He's no Berezin, though :(

All that dead wood cleared out for a reaon, and it has paid off in spades.  I tapped him up, he threw a fit and everything.  I couldn't be happier.  This is completely against what I'd normally do, but (as a former keeper) I couldn't help myself...he's a beast!!!

Thanks, man!  Portugal is not currently active, so it probably has remained quite stagnant...and, yeah, it has:

Sporting has threatened to become eligible, which would mean I'd activate the league (it'd be great if they did).

Managed to forget to post this earlier...the 2048 Euros in France were notable given that the Czech generation I started bringing through at Stade de Reims took the hosts all the way to extra time in the final.

I can't tell whether overloading on overload is a pretty damn cool strategy, or an evil game-breaking satanic voodoo spell that cannot be accepted. I'm writing on behalf of the Association of Boring Sensible Realistic Managers.

Not sure Berezin is worth 35 million dollars... now. With the potential, yeah, he probably is. Still a mental transfer though. :D

Honestly, when watching matches you don't notice anything odd/off, it simply feels like you'd expect -- the off the ball movement inherent in a strikerless system, plus the width of the fullbacks, forcing the defense to make choices.  The opposition have tended to respond exactly as you'd expect -- dropping deep, defensive midfielders shielding the back line, and attempting to hit us on the counter. Better teams attack our flanks.

It's extremely aggressive, no doubt, but not in an unrealistic way (as I'm watching the marchers actually play out). Just like playing a full-blown defensive tactic doesn't mean you're just parking a bus.

Berezin was such a bonkers transfer, mainly because it goes against what I would typically do! But, it is going to pay off in spades. He won't stay forever, but we'll make the money back when he leaves and in the interim we have a brilliant keeper while Micu develops.

August 2048 Mini-Update

One thing is for sure -- the neutrals will love us.  Never a dull moment, this.

Our Champions League campaign began in the 3rd round of the Best Placed bracket, against RB Salzburg...we annihilated them in the first leg, allowing my 1st XI to focus on a league match while my 2nd XI played the away leg.  We were never in danger of letting the Austrians back into the tie, but...suffice to say some work needs to be done.

The signs that we had traded age/experience for youth/possibility were evident, and have continued.  We'll come good, but we may not romp to championships in the way some were hoping after my early returns last year.

A return to my old rivals, Djurgardens, was next on the cards...and **** me sideways with a chainsaw if they didn't catch us unprepared.  A truly humbling match in Stockholm.  We went after them in Bruges on the return leg, though, and managed to get through to the Group Stage...where the Football Gods decided to be funny.  As a 3rd seed, we drew Frankfurt, Stade de Reims and Zenit.  I think we can get through in 3rd, but that wasn't a pleasant draw by any stretch of the imagination.

Domestically, 3 wins and a draw (away to Anderlecht) have us atop the table.  But it's early days and the depth of our squad will be tested.  Let's do this, lads.

Looking at your screen of the group draws, are Standard really ahead of both Barcelona and Monaco in euro coefficient? :O

Also massive to get Bereshin. He will be so vital for your overloading strategy I recon!

Standard won the league. In the Champions League now the first seeds are the national champions of the top 8 ranked nations, regardless of their coefficient.

Reims and Frankfurt in the groups. :D I'd say that's quite the coincidence, but then again you've gone through so many different jobs, by now it's probably harder to avoid any of your former clubs than to get drawn in a group with 2 of them.

It's a brutal draw, and two sides that I really loved. At least I won't begrudge them knocking us out...if they do!

October 2048 Mini-Update

I had no idea what to expect from this, my first trip back to the Commerzbank.  Nor any idea how the home support would react to me.  Would Attila behave, or harry Berezin during warm-ups for having begged to depart?  Would he **** on Ludwig's head?

I shouldn't have feared anything beyond the might of the Frankfurt XI (although Ludwig definitely should have been more careful...his jacket was utterly ruined.  I mean, what the **** have they been feeding Attila?  Peanuts and corn?).

A joyous, raucous crowd delighted to see some top class football, and an important clash for the purposes of the Champions League.  We came into the match having trounced an unprepared Stade de Reims, and battled hard against Zenit in St. Petersburg....shockingly finding ourselves at the top of the Group.  A big night, indeed.  And one on which we acquitted ourselves handsomely.  Ludwig is frustrated that we didn't nick it late...we could have, but at the end of the day this is another notch on our belt.  We've been asked questions in Europe, repeatedly, and have stood on our own two feet.  Steadfast.

Domestically, we continue to look strong, with our 2nd XI seeing action with some frequency.  We have a long way to go yet, but we're very much ahead of schedule.

Glad to see the madness hasn't subsided! If anything the goalposts of sanity have slowly morphed -- now hazy, whirling neon windmills wearing strange hats and always twirling twirling twirling towards freedom.

Bill Clinton has an opinion on Club Brugge's tactics, I'm sure...

giphy.gif

Speaking of the madness, I've adjusted my fullbacks to have a support duty instead of an attack duty, to try and improve their positioning a tad, and neutralize the wide play that's the primary source of goals against us.

Absolutely -- he's a player I always wanted to purchase while at Frankfurt, but wasn't willing to splurge on (he'd have cost $20M+).  For whatever reason, the tactics really suit him.

Keep in mind, Belgium is a strong league after 3 decades, and Brugge has been outstanding with a few recent runs into the knockout rounds:

Haha true. But, he plays as my central attacking midfielder, the "withdrawn targetman." His role is to create, not score!

I'm shocked that sides aren't coming in for him right and left.
