Welcome to the A.S. Roma thread, THE place to be for FM15!

Why play as A.S. Roma?

-An excellent squad with quality and depth throughout the pitch with numerous tactical possibilities available!

-Exciting young players to develop into the superstars of the future!

-A chance to manage old legends you would never have imagined playing together!

-The dual challenges of breaking through Juventus' stranglehold on the Scudetto in Italy and asserting Roma's presence in the CL for the first time in four seasons!

-NO co-ownership troubles to deal with anymore, as co-ownership is due to be scrapped by the end of the 2014/15 season!

-Unlike many leagues in Europe, Italy has adopted the 12-man substitute bench, allowing you to bring your hottest prospects to the game and have a plethora of options waiting in the wings!

-Roma has a history of bringing through local players, several of whom play for the club at the moment, and with the excellent facilities this number will only increase!

History

20th Century (1927-2000)

Associazione Sportiva Roma was founded on the 22nd of July 1927, in a merger of three Rome-based sports clubs (Fortitudo-Proroma, Roma Football Club and Alba-Audace). The club took the name of the city of Rome as well as the colours traditionally associated with the Eternal City: imperial purple and golden yellow.

After winning a trophy (the now-defunct Coppa Coni) the club soon moved into Campo Testaccio, where they trained and played from 1929 to 1940. However, the first Rome Derby was not played in this legendary stadium as the 1-0 victory for Roma took place at Stadio della Rondinella. Nevertheless, many other important matches took place at Testaccio, including a famous 5-0 victory over Juventus in 1931.

In the decade that followed Roma found little success. It took until the 1941-42 season for Roma to bring silverware home again, this time in the form of the rather more prestigious Scudetto, the trophy awarded to winners of the Italian national league: the Serie A. Led by goalscorer Amedeo Amadei, and with the Second World War in full swing, the club won its first Serie A title to the joy of the locals.

Amadei-600x333.png

Amedeo Amadei scoring for Roma

What followed was again a period of sustained mediocrity as the club was even relegated for the first, and only, time in its history in the 1950-51 season. Having bounced straight back up, Roma enjoyed some moderate success (including a second place finish in the 1954-55 season). The decade that followed brought far more success to Rome as silverware won included the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (at the time of writing the only European trophy won by Roma) and two Coppa Italia trophies in '64 and '69 respectively.

The '70s were fairly unspectacular, as barring an Anglo-Italian Cup, little silverware was won. Towards the end of the decade, however, the groundwork was being laid for the success which was to follow in the early '80s as Dino Viola took over the presidency of the club.

The Viola era, which lasted from 1979 to 1991, marked the start of one periods of greatest success Roma as the team featured global and Italian superstars such as Paulo Roberto Falcão, Bruno Conti, Carlo Ancelotti, Toninho Cerezo and Agostino Di Bartolomei. The success in this period included winning another Scudetto in 1983 with Nils Liedholm as the manager, adding four Coppe Italia to the trophy room ('80, '81, '84 and '86), and reaching the final of the European Cup in 1984, when Rome was the city hosting the final. The final itself ended in dramatic fashion, with Liverpool winning on penalties as the city of Rome wept.

rosa-1982-83-campioni-italia.jpg

The Scudetto-winning team of '83

The next major figure to emerge at boardroom level in Rome was Franco Sensi, who laid the foundations for another period of great success in the first decade of the new millenium, although results were slow in coming at the start of his tenure. When Sensi took over the club the greatest player in Roma's history was about to emerge on the footballing scene as a global superstar and a Roman legend. This was none other than Francesco Totti, who made his debut in 1993 and to this day still leads Roma on the pitch as its captain and topscorer. Totti's ascent as a Roma legend began in the late 20th century, but it was in the new millenium that he truly cemented his place in the hearts of the Romanisti.

21st Century (2000-2011)

The new millenium started with a bang for Roma, as in 2001 they won a third scudetto with a squad managed by Fabio Capello and built around getting the best out of Totti, featuring such players as Cafu, Gabriel Batistuta, Aldair, Emerson and Walter Samuel to support the genius of the Roman-born playmaker. This Scudetto was also notable as it came just after city rivals Lazio had won one of their own, the common expression in Rome at that time being that Roma "ripped the Scudetto off their shirts".

Title celebrations in Circo Massimo

After the 2001 Scudetto, the club struggled to repeat the feat of winning the title, as they finished second in the league no less than 6(!) times between 2002 and 2010. However, they did win two more Coppa Italia titles under the management of Luciano Spalletti, while Franco Sensi's daughter Rosella Sensi took over the role of chairwoman. After Spalletti left the club, Claudio Ranieri was appointed, who was in turn succeeded by Vincenzo Montella.

American Ownership - Act I

With the Sensi family facing financial difficulties, they looked to sell the club and, in 2011 they found a willing buyer in the American consortium headed by Thomas Di Benedetto. The new ownership instantly began making significant changes to the way the club was run, creating a team of footballing men led by Walter Sabatini and Franco Baldini off the pitch and Luis Enrique as the new manager. A particular focus was also given to making the team and brand more marketable, while also investing in numerous initiatives for the fans. Unfortunately, the first season proved unsuccessful as Roma didn't manage to qualify for European football, which ultimately cost Luis Enrique his job.

In the next season, James Pallotta took over from Di Benedetto, while Zdenek Zeman made a return to the club (having already managed Roma in the '90s). Zeman's tenure was short-lived as he was sacked in February 2013. He was followed by Aurelio Andreazzoli, who managed to lead the team to a Coppa Italia final against Lazio. The loss in that final was devastating for the fans and signalled to the owners that a change in direction was needed. That change in direction was to come in the next season, as a new face showed up at the gates of Roma's training complex at Trigoria.

American Ownership - Act II

The aforementioned Coppa Italia set various changes into motion in terms of how the club was run; Franco Baldini left his role as sporting director, leaving Walter Sabatini to work by himself. Sabatini soon identified Frenchman Rudi Garcia as the man to take the club forward. Despite not being the first choice for the job, Garcia impressed in interviews and was appointed as Roma manager in June 2013. After a summer which saw several star players leave and many new faces coming in, Garcia's first season in charge started in an amazing fashion. Roma set a record of 10 wins in a row at the start of a season and conceded just one goal in the same period. While Juventus ultimately ran away with the league title despite Roma breaking their own record tally of points with 85, Garcia had succeeded in restoring the shattered confidence of the team and the fans and had done so in spectacular fashion.

[video=youtube;6fFfHBn2lTU]youtube.com/6fFfHBn2lTU

For the new season Sabatini has looked to expand the squad to allow it to compete both in the league and in Europe. The last transfer window saw the following players join the club: Seydou Keita, Ashley Cole, Davide Astori, Juan Iturbe, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Kostas Manolas, Urby Emanuelson and José Holebas.

With the club in great shape it is now YOUR turn to lead Roma to glory and create a new footballing empire!

Rivalries Explained

Lazio - The city rivals, with whom you compete in the Derby. These are must-win matches for any real-life coach and the fans will be expecting you to beat them.

Juventus - A long-standing rivalry, which has recently been restored to its full fierceness due to both teams competing for the league title in Italy.

Napoli - While Roma fans and Napoli fans were originally friendly, the relationship between the sets of supporters deteriorated and never recovered.

A.C. Milan - A club that is disliked, but not truly hated by many Roma fans.

Inter - As with the other Milan club, the rivalry with Inter mainly stems from competitive roots, as the past decade saw Roma and Inter fighting for the title and the cups numerous times with the latter coming out on top for the most part.

Catania - A rivalry that originated in a 7-0 victory in Sicily, but it is mostly Catania fans who hate Roma rather than the opposite.

Atalanta - Not really considered a major rivalry as such.

Fiorentina - Rome and Florence, Florence and Rome. That is all you need to know about this one.

Liverpool - This rivalry comes from the lost CL final, which broke the hearts of many a Roma fan.

Livorno - Small club which caused a lot of annoyance by consistently being a bogey team for Roma for several years.

Bologna - Expect this one to go away over the coming years, as one of Roma's former directors has taken over Bologna and will look to implement a similar project there. (I'm also doing my Erasmus year in Bologna right now!)

Brescia - See Livorno.

Goalkeepers

26. Morgan De Sanctis

400x488-de-sanctis.jpeg

De Sanctis Profile

De Sanctis Report

Nationality: Italian

Age: 37

Footedness: Right Only

Undisputed first choice and best goalkeeper at the club. Morgan De Sanctis is a good keeper with tons of experience, however he is 37 and you may want to look for a younger replacement sooner rather than later.

28. Łukasz Skorupski

400x488-skorupski.jpeg

Skorupski Profile

Skorupski Report

Nationality: Polish

Age: 23

Footedness: Right

A decent backup, but might lack the quality required to take over the first team mantle from De Sanctis. He has some room for growth though, and with his wages not being prohibitive you might want to keep him around as a reserve.

1. Bogdan Lobonţ

400x488-lobont.jpeg

Lobonţ Profile

Lobonţ Report

Nationality: Romanian

Age: 36

Footedness: Right

Another experienced keeper who is getting towards an age where even goalkeepers start to think about retirement. If you want to free up wage space to bring your own players in, you should be looking to move him on.

12. Gianluca Curci

_-400x488-Curci.jpg

Curci Profile

Curci Report

Nationality: Italian

Age: 29

Footedness: Right Only

Curci was brought back from a half-decade of loan spells for one reason: to make up Homegrown numbers for the CL squad. He is very useful in this role and is probably second choice to De Sanctis in terms of ability as well as having a high sentimental value, having come through the Roma youth setup.

Overall Assessment: 6/10

Probably the weakest area of the squad. For the first year you should be fine with De Sanctis, but after that you really need to start looking at younger options as the backups don't appear to have the potential to make a serious claim for the starting spot.

Defenders

Rightbacks

13. Maicon

400x488-maicon.jpeg

Maicon Profile

Maicon Report

Nationality: Brazilian

Age: 32

Footedness: Right

Formerly one of the best rightbacks in the world, at age 32 Maicon still has that bit of quality that would make him first choice in the rightback slot. His main strengths are his movement and his quality on the ball, and he can be a thorn in the side of any team if given the freedom to attack.

35. Vasilis Torosidis

400x488-torosidis.jpeg

Torosidis Profile

Torosidis Report

Nationality: Greek

Age: 29

Footedness: Right

Torosidis is an excellent backup for Maicon. The only thing holding him back from being first choice over the Brazilian is his slightly lesser ability on the ball, however he can ensure that you have quality on the right flank even if Maicon is out.

Centrebacks

44. Kostas Manolas

_-400x488-Manolas.jpg

Manolas Profile

Manolas Report

Nationality: Greek

Age: 23

Footedness: Right Only

The next in a long line of Greek defenders, Manolas is still quite raw in terms of mental attributes. What he lacks in experience though, he makes up in physicality and pure defensive ability. If partnered with a centreback who has covering tendencies, Manolas' best attributes will shine through despite potential lapses in concentration. Due to his footedness he is best played on the right side of the centreback pairing.

2. Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

400x488-yanga-mbiwa.jpg

Yanga-Mbiwa Profile

Yanga-Mbiwa Report

Nationality: French, Central African

Age: 25

Footedness: Right

Yanga-Mbiwa, who is on loan from Newcastle with most of his wages being paid by the English club, is another right-sided central defender. He is a much more well-rounded player than Manolas and the choice between them depends on your preferences in terms of centreback attributes. He can be bought permanently for £5m.

5. Leandro Castán

400x488-castan.jpeg

Castán Profile

Castán Report

Nationality: Brazilian, Italian

Age: 27

Footedness: Left

Castán is your best central defender and should be first choice in the left-sided centreback slot. He is excellent defensively and should be able to effectively partner any of your other three centrebacks.

23. Davide Astori

488x400-astori.jpg

Astori Profile

Astori Report

Nationality: Italian

Age: 27

Footedness: Left

Astori is on loan from Cagliari (with a £5m future fee) and can offer a different option to his direct competitor Castán. He is slightly better on the ball than his Brazilian counterpart and has a couple of inches on him, at the cost of being somewhat weaker defensively.

Leftbacks

2. Ashley Cole

400x488-cole.jpeg

Cole Profile

Cole Report

Nationality: English, Barbadian

Age: 33

Footedness: Left

Arguably the best defensive fullback of the last decade, Cole has won it all and adds valuable experience on the left. While his pace is likely to drop fairly quickly due to his age, he still has a lot to offer to the team for at least a couple of years.

25. José Holebas

_-400x488-Holebas.jpg

Holebas Profile

Holebas Report

Nationality: Greek, German, Uruguayan

Age: 30

Footedness: Left

Holebas offers an a more attacking alternative to Cole, while also allowing you to have a bit more of a physical presence in the back line should you decide to play him. However, Cole's quality is such that you will want to have the Englishman starting in most games.

42. Federico Balzaretti

400x488-balzaretti.jpeg

Balzaretti Profile

Balzaretti Report

Nationality: Italian

Age: 32

Footedness: Left Only

Balzaretti is a good player, but start the game injured for 7-8 months. If he were younger this would be a smaller problem, but being 32 you may not see him step on the pitch again. You may want to offer him a coaching role should you wish to reduce the wage bill.

82. Urby Emanuelson

400x488-emanuelson.jpeg

Emanuelson Profile

Emanuelson Report

Nationality: Dutch, Surinamese

Age: 28

Footedness: Left

Emanuelson has good attacking attributes for a leftback, but is a bit of a liability defensively. As such, you could be better off experimenting with him in a more advanced role so that he is less likely to get caught out in defence.

Overall Assessment: 7/10

You have a wealth of experience on the flanks, and verious different options in the centre. However, the wide players are ageing and two of four central defenders are loanees. While you can definitely get by in the first season, you'll have to start exploring younger options for the right- and leftback positions, while you also need to decided whether or not to buy Astori and Yanga-Mbiwa permanently.

Midfielders

16. Daniele De Rossi

400x488-de-rossi.jpeg

De Rossi Profile

De Rossi Report

Nationality: Italian

Age: 30

Footedness: Right

De Rossi is one of the stars of the team and homegrown to boot. He can be a brilliant shield in front of the defence, while also having very good ability on the ball as an added bonus. In aggressive roles he may end up spending a lot of time on the sidelines, however, so you do need to handle him with care.

20. Seydou Keita

400x488-keita.jpeg

Keita Profile

Keita Report

Nationality: Malian, French

Age: 34

Footedness: Left

The Malian midfielder has enough quality on the ball and defensively to adequately deputise for any of your starting midfielders. Additionally, he has a ton of experience at Champions League level and could be a vital in providing a calming presence for your younger midfielders when they are first faced with the much tougher competition.

15. Miralem Pjanić

400x488-pjanic.jpeg

Pjanić Profile

Pjanić Report

Nationality: Bosnian, French, Luxembourger

Age: 24

Footedness: Right

Having joined in 2011, the brilliant Bosnian is one of the players that has been at Roma since the start of the American ownership. He can unlock defences from a deeper midfield position or as an attacking midfielder and has the ability to become one of your most important contributors to chance creation. He is perhaps best in a playmaking role, where he'll see a lot of the ball and have the opportunity to let his genius to its thing.

32. Leandro Paredes

400x488-paredes.jpeg

Paredes Profile

Paredes Report

Nationality: Argentinian

Age: 20

Footedness: Right

Paredes looks a lot like a younger Pjanić; he has great technical ability while being slightly weaker in the physical department. If developed correctly and given plenty of gametime he can certainly become a very good player.

48. Salih Uçan

400x488-ucan.jpeg

Uçan Profile

Uçan Report

Nationality: Turkish

Age: 20

Footedness: Right

Uçan is great technically and mentally for his age, but his physical attributes are lagging way behind. Should you manage to get those up to scratch, he can become an important player. Should you decide to buy him during his loan spell from Fenerbahçe he will cost you a fairly steep £9.29m.

6. Kevin Strootman

400x488-strootman.jpeg

Strootman Profile

Strootman Report

Nationality: Dutch

Age: 24

Footedness: Left

One of the very best players on the players on the team, Strootman starts the game with a ligament injury keeping him out for 3-4 months. Nonetheless, he should be in your first team plans as soon as he gets back to fitness, he is just that good.

4. Radja Nainggolan

400x488-nainggolan.jpeg

Nainggolan Profile

Nainggolan Report

Nationality: Belgian, Indonesian

Age: 26

Footedness: Right

In the absence of Strootman, it has been up to Nainggolan to step up and he has done so in style. In the game he offers you a very good option in both the DM and CM positions where his tenacity will be extremely useful in the big games.

24. Alessandro Florenzi

400x488-florenzi.jpeg

Florenzi Profile

Florenzi Report

Nationality: Italian

Age: 23

Footedness: Right

Florenzi could just as easily have gone into the section dedicated to attacking players. The Roman-born midfielder/winger's versatility makes him a key cog in any midfield and he will always run his socks off for the team that he loves. Should be one of your most important players going forward, and you would be wise to reject even the largest offers for him.

Overall Assessment: 8/10

The only thing stopping this from being higher is Strootman's injury. You have excellent depth throughout midfield and a variety of tactical options available to you. The squad possesses both youth and experience and few to none additions are needed to complete it.

Attackers

Wide Attackers

27. Gervinho

400x488-gervinho.jpeg

Gervinho Profile

Gervinho Report

Nationality: Ivorian

Age: 27

Footedness: Right

The rapid Ivorian had a marvelous season last year, bouncing back from a disappointing stint in England in style. His main strengths are his speed, movement and dribbling and he can cause havoc in defences when gets the ball. An interesting experiment could be to have him play the new Raumdeuter role, where he would be able to use his great movement to the fullest.

7. Juan Iturbe

400x488-iturbe.jpeg

Iturbe Profile

Iturbe Report

Nationality: Argentinian, Paraguayan

Age: 21

Footedness: Left

Another pacy winger, who unlike Gervinho is left-footed. Iturbe shares many of his characteristics with the Ivorian sprinter and can be similarly destructive if allowed to run at defences. He is quite raw, but with some work could become a magnificent winger and a genuine star of your team.

8. Adem Ljajić

400x488-ljajic.jpeg

Ljajić Profile

Ljajić Report

Nationality: Serbian

Age: 22

Footedness: Right

While nominally more of a central playmaker, Ljajic has spent most of his time at Roma on the wings. From wide positions he offers a different option to the aforementioned pacy wingers, as he is more creatively oriented. Again, he is a player that you will need to develop to truly get the best out of, but once you've worked on him a bit he'll start to shine like few others can.

Central Attackers

10. Francesco Totti

400x488-totti.jpeg

Totti Profile

Totti Report

Nationality: Italian

Age: 37

Footedness: Either

The eternal Captain and legend of Roma is still bringing the goods at the tender age of 38. In the past few seasons he has rolled back the years and produced dazzling displays of football, creating chances few others would even see. In FM he is your best playmaker by far, and you'll want him to get as much of the ball as possible to feed the runners around him. However, due to his age his attributes will inevitably decline rather quickly, so you should make the most of this wonderful player while you have him.

22. Mattia Destro

400x488-destro.jpeg

Destro Profile

Destro Report

Nationality: Italian

Age: 23

Footedness: Right

Destro is your classic goalpoacher with incredible movement off the ball and great finishing ability, which allow him to make the most of the few chances he gets. However, he lacks the ability to fashion something out of nothing, so the supply you give him becomes all the more important.

9. Marco Borriello

400x488-borriello.jpeg

Borriello Profile

Borriello Report

Nationality: Italian

Age: 32

Footedness: Left

A traditional targetman type, Borriello can hold the ball up and score some goals. However, his wages of £100,000 per week are excessive and you should try to move him on in favour of a cheaper alternative.

96. Antonio Sanabria

400x488-sanabria.jpeg

Sanabria Profile

Sanabria Report

Nationality: Paraguayan

Age: 18

Footedness: Right

Sanabria is very talented but very raw. If you find the opportunity to give him a chance to play he will develop very well. Since he is so young there are many ways in which he could go; you could turn him into a more complete central striker, or focus purely on his attacking prowess to turn him into a goalscoring machine, or even work on his playmaking abilities to turn him into more of a Totti replacement. He should become very good whatever you decide to do.

Overall Assessment: 8/10

The attacking depth of the squad is quite good (especially if you see Florenzi as a winger), and you have a number of options available to you. However, Totti's age stops the rating here from being higher. You don't particularly need to delve into the transfer market, but it can be useful to try to offload Borriello and bring in a cheaper replacement or promote Sanabria.

U20s Team Players

The squad here is very bloated and I'll look to give an overview with screenshots only of the best talents. Note that some of the players may have random attributes (and potential) and may thus be different in your saves. Additionally, I moved the players who were 16 and under to the U18s team, so that there is more to talk about in that section.

Goalkeepers

There doesn't appear to be too much talent in this position at the start. Marchegiani and Pop could both forge themselves a career at a lower level, but are unlikely to ever hold down a first team spot for Roma, while Proietti Gaffi is older, starts out on loan and has similar potential to the other two.

Defenders

Tin Jedvaj

★★★★★★★★★★

One of the hottest defensive prospects in world football. The young Croatian starts off on loan at Bayer Leverkusen, though you have a buyback clause for £6M, so you should be able to get him back cheaply should they decide to buy him. If you do manage to keep him he could develop into an absolute star centreback or rightback

Alessio Romagnoli

★★★★★★★★★

Another player who could go on to become a definite Roma starter. He'll spend the first season on loan at Sampdoria, and if he develops well there he could go straight into your first team on his return. However, you do need to renew his contract as it expires at the end of the first season.

Luca Antei

★★★★★★

Co-owned by Sassuolo, and has all the makings of a good central defender. He has the potential to be a star Serie A defender and great physical attributes and as such could play a role in the future.

Elio Capradossi

★★★★★★

A young centreback with well-rounded attributes and the potential to become a good or even a leading Serie A player.

There are numerous other defenders in the U20s who might become decent players, but these are probably the top prospects. However, you should keep an eye out for Petar Golubovic, Michele Somma, Mihai Bălaşa and Arturo Calabresi.

Midfielders

Lorenzo Pellegrini

★★★★★★★★

Although primarily a defensive midfielder, he can be moulded into any role in central midfield and should be a future star.

Matteo Adamo

★★★★★★★

A young midfielder with good playmaking abilties, could strike up a good partnership with Pellegrini as their skills complement each other nicely.

Luca Mazzitelli

★★★★★★★

Defensively skilled and tall, he could take up a deeper role in a midfield trio with Adamo and Pellegrini, even though he starts on loan at Alto Adige.

Federico Viviani

★★★★★

Very well-rounded, with the potential to be a leading Serie A player. He could be a useful backup for your first team from the second season onwards, since he starts off at Latina on a one-year loan.

While the above are the standout talents in midfield there are many that could also make it. Andrea Bertolacci, who is co-owned by Genoa, might well be the best of these even though he starts off injured. Meanwhile Lorenzo Di Livio, Matteo Ricci and Francesco Di Mariano are all attack-minded midfielders who might just have what it takes to make a mark on the first team. Marquinho, in the meanwhile is playing for Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia in the first season.

Attackers

Federico Ricci, Valerio Trani, Marco Frediani, Valmir Berisha, Stefano Pettinari all have potential to be future Serie A players. Carlos Carbonero is already rated as a good Serie A player with potential to be a star, but at 23 may not reach his full potential.

U18s Team Players

Note that some of the players may have random attributes (and potential) and may thus be different in your saves. Additionally, I moved the youngest players who were in the U20s team to the U18s team to have more to talk about here.

Eros De Santis - Potential to be a good Serie A rightback.

Riccardo Marchizza - Potential to be a good Serie A centreback.

Silvio Anocic - Potential to be a leading Serie A leftback.

Emanuele Spinozzi - Potential to be a good Serie A defensive midfielder.

Antonio D'Alena - Potential to be a good Serie A central midfielder.

Alessandro Bordin - Potential to be a leading Serie A attacking midfielder.

No really spectacular prospects in this section really, but some of these players might be able to have an impact with some luck and a lot of work. Anocic probably the best of the lot, as he looks like he could become a pretty solid defensive fullback.

Staff

Key Staff

Walter Sabatini

Sabatini Profile

Staff Role: Director of Football

Nationality: Italian

Age: 59

Personality: Driven

Sabatini is the mastermind behind the current Roma team. He has been working his magic ever since he was given free rein to handle transfers in the Summer of 2013. He built a Roma team that can compete at the very top in Italy, and if your preference is to work with an active director of football he will prove to be an absolutely vital member of your staff.

Bruno Conti

Conti Profile

Staff Role: Head of Youth Development

Nationality: Italian

Age: 59

Personality: Model Professional

Conti was an absolute legend on the pitch for Roma, and in FM he is likely to be the same at backroom level. Conti's attributes are absolutely outstanding this year and they are matched by his personality. Since he plays the vital role of choosing the young players to bring through, he is another staff member that you must absolutely look to keep.

Alberto De Rossi

De Rossi Profile

Staff Role: U20s Manager

Nationality: Italian

Age: 56

Personality: Fairly Determined

A former Roma player and father of current Roma player Daniele De Rossi, Alberto is an excellent manager for your youth team.

Other Staff

Most of the other members of staff are quite good, however the staff list is quite bloated and you may want to offer mutual termination to several employees to reduce the wage bill.

Tactical Recommendations

The starting Roma squad in FM15 allows you to build numerous different tactical systems, and you can fit the players into pretty much any system you like. Here are some of the more common tactics to give you some ideas:

4-3-3

Transfer Recommendations

Goalkeepers

Salvatore Sirigu

Sirigu Report

★★★★★★

£4M seems like a bargain for an Italian international 'keeper, although I don't know if that is affected by me not loading up the French leagues in my Beta save.

Simone Scuffet

Scuffet Report

★★★★★★★★★★

Unlikely to join you at the very start of the game, but he should become more interested after about a season. Possibly the best young Italian goalkeeper since Buffon.

Mattia Perin

Perin Report

★★★★★★★★

Another good young Italian goalie, might be a cheaper alternative to Scuffet going forward.

Defenders

Éder Álvarez Balanta

Balanta Report

★★★★★★★★★★

Usually became an absolute superstar on FM14 and seems to have similarly high ceiling on this year's version.

Matteo Darmian

Darmian Report

★★★★★★★

Due to the age of the current rightbacks you'll be looking for a younger replacement sooner rather than later should you lose Jedvaj to Leverkusen, and Darmian is Italian and fairly young.

Nicola Murru

Murru Report

★★★★★★★

Murru could become the starting leftback for the national team in the future, and is able to play throughout the backline.

Midfielders

The midfield is strong in depth and doesn't really need further bodies. If you are looking to add numbers a good, cheap option would be to buy back Genoa's 50% of Andrea Bertolacci as you should be able to do so for around £2.4M

Attackers

Pretty similar to the situation in midfield really, as you have both numbers and different options both upfront and on the wings.

Sounds like you're doing well SirToby, what kind of formation are you playing? Gervinho looks like a beast this year.

On another note, it is possible to get both the Youth Recruitment and Junior Coaching upgraded in the first few days.

I'm playing a 4-2-3-1 with a left winger and to central attacking midfielders. My complete wing back offers width on my right side.

Gervinho is now on nine goals in 10 games, but the team's form has been down going. Have lost to Benfica, Torino, Dortmund and Empoli inside my last five games. I'm third in Serie A with 16 point after eight rounds.

Thanks for the tip!

Alright Romanista1994, nice thread.

I started my first save with Roma and I'm now in December. I set some young fullbacks, a young keeper, and another leftfooted centreback as targets for the transfer window. I'm trying to play a similar tactic to Rudi irl, a 4-5-1 more or less with two inside forwards on the wings and a trequartista upfront. I couldn't really find a good, cheap, young fullback but I did decide to bring in Matt Lowton from Villa for 2.5 mil - he's not a brilliant signing in any way but he's quite versatile and his stats are well rounded, as well as being only 25, so since the price was so low I decided to get him. He's 3rd choice atm and I think he will be my 2nd choice rightback in a few years when I've hopefully got a younger one to replace Maicon and Vasilis who will be too old by them. Plus his wages are low and he gives Ashley a mate. I've also signed Éder Balanta who my scouts were raving about for 3.5 mil +750k after 50 league appearences to be my other leftfooted centreback and he can be backup for leftback I suppose. However I had to let River Plate have him on loan for this year to get him. As for keepers, my scouts recommended Timo Horn to me and when I saw that he had a 3.8 mil release clause I went straight for him and he's done alright when he's played so far. Finally, I bought Pedro Obiang from Sampdoria for £4.5 million as I got an injury to Nainggolan early on and so had to get a new centre-mid, especially since Uçan looks pretty crap and Paredes is meh. He's really rounded and he can also play DM which is nice. I also sold Borriello for 100k to Atalanta just to get rid of his mad wages. Unfortunately I did have to pay him some of them until next year for him to leave (I think 68k a week?).

Here's my tactic. As you can see, I'm 13th in the league and performances have been pretty poor for the most part. We drew 1-1 away to Napoli in the first match, which was decent but disappointing as they equalised in the 85th minute. We then drew 1-1 at home to Verona which was annoying; they scored a freekick. We got a pretty hard draw in the CL, although it could have been worse: Chelsea, Schalke (called Gelsenkirchen!) and Galatasaray, and in the first match we lost 1-0 at home to Schalke. Everything suddenly clicked though against Udinese at home, and we won 3-1 but it could have been a lot more. However, we then went on to lose 5 games in a row: 4-3 away to Sampdoria, 2-0 at home to Torino, 3-1 away to Chelsea, 3-0 away to A.C. (which the fans were'nt happy about) and then 3-1 at home to Palermo! We then managed to beat Galatasaray 2-1 away which was good, but we then lost 1-0 away to Cesena from a freekick in the last minute. Everything suddenly clicked again and we smashed Cagliari 4-1 at home next, but we followed it with a 2-1 defeat away to Parma. We got it right again though and smashed Galatasaray 5-1 at home before beating Chievo 4-0 at home. We then drew to Lazio 1-1 'away', which was annoying as a victory would have been great for the morale as well as easing the growing pressure on my job. It could have been worse though, as Gervinho equalised in the 86th minute despite the fact that we only had ten men on the pitch since Florenzi got a second yellow (for jack ****!). A key CL night then followed away at Schalke; if we didn't get a result we'd be out for sure. We stormed into a 2-0 lead with Iturbe and Gervinho scoring by the 27th minute, but in the second half we fell apart and Tranquillo Barnetta scored twice to level it. Destro however then showed his worth and scored in the 72nd minute, and squeaked it out to get a crucial away win. We're now second in the group, although we're only ahead of Schalke by 2 points and we have Chelsea as our last game whilst they have Galatasaray. Since form seemed to be turning around I hoped for an easy win against Genoa at home and so rested players for the coming match away to Rubentus, but we drew 0-0 in a boring game.

And that's where I am now. We're 13th in the league with 13 points and we're behind the Champions League spots by 15 points. My job security is 'very insecure' and I think it's pretty clear that we're just doing crap. Honestly, I feel that we've simply been unlucky as we've definitely had the chances in our games but we haven't taken them and the other teams have scored a lot of set pieces against us. We've also had bad luck with injuries, as in addition to Strootman's injury we've had Cole, Pjanic, Gervinho, Nainggolan, Pedro Obiang and Holebas out for decent spells. Our form might be changing though. The next three games could mess this up though as we've got Juve away, then Chelsea at home and then Inter at home. The few bright spots in the team have been that Destro has been playing really well, and has even forced me to drop Totti who was at the start of the season my definite first choice, and Iturbe has also been playing really well as an Inside Forward on the right; he's joint top goalscorer with Destro. Florenzi has also ben playing well, as have Astori and Manolas. I'm just hoping we can pick up form maybe helped by some good signings in January; the contracts of both Umtiti and Andre Ayew are up in the summer and I've made them unhappy at their current clubs, so we might be able to either get them on bosmans or bring them in in January. I honestly don't think the current squad is bad though, we've just been unlucky.

p.s. have you guys noticed that Tin Jedvaj has an agreed fee with Bayer Leverkusen of only £4.22 million? I really hope they don't exercise it, especially since it's a two year loan...

SirToby - Sounds like an interesting tactical system and not too far from what happens irl with Maicon's overlapping runs. Hope you manage to turn your form around.

shnen - Thanks! But ouch, seems like stuff isn't going to well for you atm. I guess if you can't make it into the CL by virtue of your league position you'll just have to win the thing to get back in. (You can also win the EL, right?)

Also, Leverkusen do indeed have a low buyout clause for Jedvaj, but you should have a buy back clause set at £6M, so if he gets good and they decide to sign him you can always buy him back cheaply.

Top OP :applause:

Thanks!

I've been playing very slowly (as I usually do) and just been looking at potential transfers to add to post 13. Some interesting players available pretty cheaply on the demo, including Balanta, Darmian and Sirigu. I'll be looking to complete the recommended transfers post over the next few days.

I still can't tear myself away from FM14 Roma save :(

I'd wait until that one lost its appeal if I were you, game seems really good, but it definitely makes a big change from FM14. And I'm not a big fan of starting serious saves on the beta either.

Superb posting. Always mean to get going with a long-term Giallorossi save, but my last one in FM13 didn't work out so well...

Should give it another try when the full game comes out. There's been massive changes to the squad and it looks much more balanced than it did two years ago (was that when Piris was the only senior rightback at the club?).

yeah for a while we had just Piris (who was awful on the game and not much better irl), the kind of stuff that makes one think it would have been good to keep Cassetti for an other year

Started a Roma save today, decided to go with a 4-2-3-1 formation to get as many of the star players on as possible.

I've turned transfers off so I can give the current players a chance, looking at our goalkeeper options though I feel I'm going to regret that. Not one of them seems of the required quality to push for a title challenge.

Lining up as follows:

Skorupski - Sweeper Keeper Defend

Maicon - CWB Attack

M'Biwa - CB Defend

Castan - CB Defend

Cole - WB Support

De Rossi - DLP Defend

Nainggolan - Roaming Playmaker (likely to be Strootman when fit)

Florenzi - Winger Support

Pjanic - Shadow Striker

Gervinho/Ljajic - Raumdeuter

Totti - False Nine.

I reckon I'll be retraining Iturbe to be a striker to take over from Totti as the False Nine, I'm also thinking of training Destro to compete on the left hand side as the Raumdeuter as I know Gervinho wants out and he'll most likely be gone in January. The reason I see Iturbe as a striker is he reminds me a bit of Messi, and I think/hope with the right training he can be nearly as good.

Link to post

james_wilko - Seems like a decent setup, only role I'm not too sure about is the Shadow Striker for Pjanic as he's much more of a playmaker than a goalscorer. How are you finding the new roles though? The Raumdeuter and Roaming Playmaker both seem like really interesting concepts, but I'm yet to try them in game.

Also, I agree that Iturbe could do very well in a Messi-like role with a bit of training, he really reminds me of Lamela a couple of years ago who could be similarly retrained to play upfront and use his pace, dribbling and flamboyant tendencies to wreak havoc in the final third.

Link to post

Two goals in two games for Pjanic, but I wanted him as a shadow striker to push him further on to create chances for the Raumdeuter. He's not assisted yet but that's probably down to a lack of cohesion in the team since it's still early days.

Gervinho has 1 goal in his two games as a Raumdeuter and Nainngolan has an assist as the roaming playmaker and is generally performing well. I imagine when it's Strootman who is much more creative it will work a lot better.

I've adjusted the team slightly, the roaming playmaker is now in CM and Florenzi has been pulled back to RM to play as a wide playmaker on support. We're not looking fantastic yet, although we were quite dominant in our pre-season games. Hopefully once we hit 100% fluidity we'll be better, but I'm considering some role changes to potentially improve performances. I'll give it 10 games and then see what happens.

I've never really given much thought to Roma but this thread has changed my mind, it really is fantastically well presented.

Thank you for the kind words, sparkycufc. Hope you do give Roma a try!

Tip: Sell Gervinho for 35mil and buy Yarmolenko. He is fantastic and cheap since his contract expires at the end of the season.

That is some price for Gervinho! You can pretty much strengthen the whole squad with that kind of money. Did you bring in anyone else along with Yarmolenko?

Link to post

It happened in January after he'd had a pretty good start to the season so it may not be as high at the start. But I sold him for 35mil and Destro for 15mil after he started whining and I brought in:

Otamendi -12.75mil

Davide Santon - 8.5mil

Gael Clichy - 7mil

Yarmolenko - 1.8mil

Trapp - 3.4mil

Sammir - 2.7mil.

It's really improved the squad and Yarmolenko has been a big upgrade on Gervinho. He's managed 12 goals and 8 assists in 16 games, compared to Gervinho's 8 goals and 5 assists in 17 games.

So my first season ended and I'm part way through pre-season for season two and here's my update.

Serie A

The season went very well, we won the league with several games to spare. We ended up with 103 points, 34 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss. Annoyingly the loss came to Fiorentina, I had hoped that when my unbeaten run was to end I'd at least lose it to a bigger team...

In the season, we scored 97 goals and conceded 28. This meant we scored the most and conceded the least, it was inevitable we'd win the league managing to do that. Some of our star results from the league include; Beating AC Milan at home 7-2, Genoa away 5-0, Inter at home 5-0 (the Milan teams clearly don't get on well with Rome) and Juve at home 3-1.

Despite the awesome number of goals we scored, we didn't have the top goalscorer, in fact we weren't even close individually. Instead we had a lot of goals spread throughout the team.

Pjanic - 28 games and 14 goals

Totti - 34 games and 15 goals

Yarmolenko - 23 games and 13 goals

Florenzi - 38 games and 16 goals

Ljajic - 32 games and 12 goals (half of those games were as a sub)

As well as goals chipped in by De Rossi, Strootman, Iturbe etc etc.

Champions League

In the Champions League, we made it to the Quarter Finals, eventually losing on away goals to Man City after a 6-6 aggregate score. We lost away 3-2, and won at home 4-3 after conceding in the 115th minute. Absolutely gutting.

We did have some more great games in the Champions League, in our group we had Arsenal, Shakhtar and CSKA Moscow. We won 5 of our 6 games, losing our last game to Shakhtar after playing a massively weakened team. Our best result in the group was away to Arsenal, who we beat 5-1. Best thing about that game was we were 1-0 down at half time, before completing turning it around and destroying them. In the first knockout round we got Chelsea, who we beat 7-4 on aggregate. We had an epic 3-3 match at Stamford Bridge, before turning them over 4-1 at home.

Italian Cup

In the cup that nobody at Roma cared about, we ended up winning it beating Empoli, Inter and Genoe before facing Juventus in the final which we won 2-1.

New Season

So on to the new season, and the first thing I'll go through is transfers. During the season, Nainggolan got upset he was second choice to Strootman, Ashley Cole was homesick, Manolas was whining he couldn't get a game and Maicon had signed a pre-contract agreement with Inter after I refused to pay the money he wanted.

Nainggolan was signed at the end of the co-ownership by Cagliari for 5.5mil which annoyed me. He was worth 16 mil but I didn't want to put in too high a bid and thought 5mil would do it. P*ssed as that was a potential 20mil transfer lost.

Cole, missing England so much, has signed for Monaco for 1mil...

Manolas joined Cagliari for 5mil

And of course Maicon jumped ship to Inter for more cash.

and finally, the transfer that damn near broke my heart...

Juan Iturbe, the new Messi, the guy I was planning on building my team around has signed for PSG for 51mil. Turns out he had a release clause and they activated it. I am gutted.

But we move on, in came:

For free I signed the following - Hatem Ben Arfa, Clement Chantome, Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik and Leandro Paredes.

Benedikt Hoewedes signed from Gelsenkirchen for 14.75mil

Marcell Jansen from Hamburg for 3mil

Joel Campbell of Arsenal signed for 6mil

Simone Scuffet has signed from and been loaned back to Udinese for 10mil. Future goalkeeper right there.

I've also signed a newgen called Fabio Innocenzi for 1mil from Bologna.

So the team now lines up as follows:

Sweeper Keeper Defend: Kevin Trapp

Complete WB Attack®: Davide Santon/Vasillis Torosidis

Wing Back Support(L): Gael Clichy/Marcell Jansen

Centre Back Defend: Benedikt Hoewedes & Nicolas Otamendi/Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik & Leandro Castan

Half Back Defend: Daniele De Rossi/Seydou Keita - I am considering retraining Elio Capradossi to replace De Rossi.

Wide Playmaker Attack®: Alessandro Florenzi/Hatem Ben Arfa

Roaming Playmaker Support: Kevin Strootman/Clement Chantome

Raumdeuter Attack(L): Andriy Yarmolenko/Joel Campbell

Shadow Striker: Miralem Pjanic/Sammir

False Nine: Francesco Totti/Adem Ljajic.

Not bad in my opinion, could do with some better cover for De Rossi but I don't want to potentially stunt Capradossi. I'm also considering signing a new Shadow Striker, as Pjanic is a bit injury prone and I'm wary Sammir isn't good enough. But I've retrained Tony Sanabria to play there and, like with Capradossi, I'm wary of stunting his growth.

Great opening posts.

Will be starting a Milan save @ the weekend & will be checking out your transfer recommendations.

Thanks, hope you find them useful.

james_wilko - What a season! Seems like you got everyone playing out of their skins and a domestic double is a great result in the first season. I saw you mention Capradossi, is he or anyone else in the youth team looking like they might cement a first team place in the future?

f0rmat - Sorry to hear about the injury and disciplinary problems in your save, how are you doing with all those players out?

edgar555 - Strange that Pjanic is out so much, as his coach report doesn't hint towards him being particularly injury prone. Although saying that, I just had him go off in the first half of the first friendly (along with Iturbe and Maicon) so maybe the coaches are just not picking up on his injury proneness.

By the way well done on this thread, it's the best team thread this year and the reason I went with Roma

I'll do a full update at seasons end.

Capradossi and Alessio Romagnoli are the two I have hopes for. Romagnoli is probably going to be retrained to be a permanent left back as I have Hoewedes and Otamendi in their prime. Jedvaj may be a permanent fixture, just praying Leverkusen don't take up their option to buy at the end of this season.

Lorenzo Pellegrini is another potential first teamer, but he doesn't seem to have the potential of the other three. He's naturally a DM and I've got him out on loan this season, I'll be making a decision to keep him or not based on his performances this season.

great thread mate, never realised that was the clubs insignia haha

Thanks. It was changed fairly recently, so I felt like emphasizing it a bit!

Good luck to anyone who just got the game today! I hope all of you, including those who started on the Beta, have great saves with Roma.
