Wednesday September 30th, 2009

An exciting evening of action as our teams make their second appearances in European competition looking to build on their opening results from a couple of weeks ago. There is also a full programme of T2B Championship action as well as we reach the 10 games point where many experts suggest as the indicator for the season you’re facing.

We’ll start in the Champions League!

ChampionsLeague.jpg

On Matchday 1, defending champions Discworld got off to a solid start with a 2-0 win over Wisla Krakow at home in Group C. However, the news for New Bloc – T2B Premiership runners-up last season – was not so good as they crashed 3-0 in Belgrade to a Partizan side who were expected to make the numbers up in Group D. T2B Premiership champions, Coedpoeth United, got off to a good start with a hard-fought 4-3 win away to Rubin in Group H. What would Matchday 2 bring?

Magnus Vestergaard’s Discworld were facing a tricky trip to Portugal to face Sporting in their second game and this was emphasised in the first half as CELSINHO put the hosts ahead. However, the defending champions hit back and a goal from ZOLTAN GERA with 19 minutes remaining secured a valuable point for the Disks.

GROUP C

Sporting 1-1 Discworld

Wisla Krokow 0-1 Dynamo Kiev

Discworld and Dynamo Kiev lead the way on 4 points but both teams dropped points against Sporting who sit third with 2 points and face Wisla in their next two games. With the Disks and Kiev meeting over the coming weeks, Magnus Vestergaard’s men need to continue their solid start to ensure progress to the next round.

In Group D, New Bloc needed to bounce back from their 3-0 humiliation in Belgrade with a big performance at the Stadion Uljarevic against Olympique Marseille. Things got off to a devastating start when ANTON FERDINAND was sent off on 6 minutes to give the French side the advantage. However, as poor as the Bloc were in their first game, they were excellent in their second and went in at half time 2-0 up thanks to goals from PATO and THIAGO MOTTA. A late strike from NICKLAS BENDTNER made sure of the victory which brings them back into contention after a shaky start.

GROUP D

AC Milan 4-0 Partizan

New Bloc 3-0 Olympique Marseille

A great result for New Bloc who put themselves back into the mix with a solid home win. However, they face a double header against the might of AC Milan in the coming weeks, the Italians with a 100% record topping the group, whilst Partizan and Marseille meet. A shock win over the Italians could do the Bloc a power of good as they seek to jump Partizan into the top two.

Finally, Group H saw T2B Premiership champions and leaders Coedpoeth United looking to extend their winning start and take control of the group as they faced Panathanaikos at the Penygelli Arena. An early WAYNE ROONEY goal looked to have done that but a DIMITRIS SALPINGIDIS goal in first half stoppage time gave the Greeks a half time score of 1-1. Three goals in eleven minutes put Coedy in charge though as BOJAN, ROONEY with his second and PATRICK VIEIRA made it 4-1 before SALPINGIDIS pulled one back. ROONEY completed his hat-trick before a late goal from KAKA made the result convincing as Coedy ran out 6-2 winners.

GROUP H

Coedpoeth United 6-2 Panathanaikos

Inter Milan 1-1 Rubin

With a 100% record, Coedy lead the group and have an advantage over their next opponents, Inter, after they surprisingly could only draw at home to Rubin. Rubin sit third with the Greeks bottom with two defeats and it looks like being comfortable for Inter and Coedy – unless one of them seriously slips up in the coming weeks.

In Group B, Steel Panthers were looking to build on a solid 1-1 draw against Spanish side Athletic Bilbao in their first match as they entertained Italian giants, Roma, at Catnip Park. Former Roma legend FRANCESCO TOTTI put the Panthers in front early but it took a long time for the clinching goal with HARIS VUCKIC adding the second with 6 minutes left. And it was needed as DAVIDE CHIMENTI pulled one back for the Romans but Stix Zadinia’s side held on for the win.

GROUP B

Dinamo Moscow 1-3 Athletic Bilbao

Steel Panthers 2-1 Roma

Panthers and Athletic Bilbao lead the way on 4 points each after their unbeaten starts and will be hoping to build on these in their next game. Roma and Dinamo Moscow have 1 point each but need to pick up a win soon if they are to challenge for a place in the next round.

In Group D, Capite Ad Calcem were looking for a win at home to Rapid Vienna after their opening 2-0 defeat against Fenerbahce left them struggling in the group. In a dull game, the Romans made the breakthrough with quarter of an hour remaining as SERCAN YILDIRIM put them in front and looking good for a first European win. However, STEFFEN HOFMANN equalised late on for the Austrian side to leave Capite Ad Calcem looking in danger of an early Europa League exit.

GROUP D

Capite Ad Calcem 1-1 Rapid Vienna

Lazio 3-3 Fenerbahce

Rapid Vienna and Fenerbahce lead the way with four points apiece after two games and look favourites for a place in the next round. Lazio and Capite Ad Calcems meet in a ‘Roman’ derby over the coming weeks and both sides can ill-afford to lose the games if they have intentions of making the next stage of the competition.

A 1-1 home draw with Genoa meant that the London Titans needed to pull out a good result as they travelled to Belgium to meet Club Brugge on Matchday 2 in Group E. Unfortunately, they were unable to breakthrough and left with a 0-0 draw that means that they are under pressure in their third game when they meet PSV Eindhoven.

GROUP E

Club Brugge 0-0 London Titans

Genoa 2-0 PSV

Genoa’s win over PSV means they move above the Dutch side to lead the group after two games. Their point in Belgium keeps the Thames Warriors in contention in third place but they can ill afford a slip up against PSV in their third game and need to find a win soon if they are to progress.

A win in Romania over CFR Cluj meant that Kodaly McMaster’s Northern Extreme were off to a flying start in their quest to qualify from Group F after they failed to make the Champions League this season. A home tie with French side Lille gave them chance to make it six points and FERNANDO TORRES’ early goal gave them a good chance of doing that. However, PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG levelled for the French to show that this wouldn’t be so easy for Extreme and EZEQUIEL LAVEZZI was needed to make it 2-1 to Extreme ahead of half time. A second LAVEZZI goal followed late on to secure the win and a 100% start for Extreme.

GROUP F

Northern Extreme 3-1 LOSC Lille

Werder Bremen 0-2 CFR Cluj

Their 100% start, coupled with Bremen’s surprise loss to CFR Cluj at home, means that Extreme sit top of the group and looking good for the next round. They need to be careful in their upcoming games with the German side but another four points should see them home and dry.

BC Lions vs. Hallendren Awakeners

After a slow start, Ben Craig’s BC Lions have crept back into contention with a five game winning run that has seen them move into 7th in the table. Hallendren Awakeners, under the management of V. Asher, have struggled so far and sat in the bottom half of the table as they travelled to the in-form Lions. The early exchanges seemed to indicate a continuation of the form book as the Lions forced an early penalty but ADRIANO was unable to convert and give the Lions the lead. CARLOS TEVEZ made him pay 2 minutes later as he fired the Awakeners into the lead and they surprised everyone with two more goals – both from LUIS SUAREZ – to lead 3-0 at the break. The stunned Lions couldn’t change the game after half time and SUAREZ completed his hat trick before a late NENAD MILIJAS penalty gave the Awakeners a stunning 5-0 win.

CSKA Oddworld vs. Plymouth Argyle

Still unbeaten after 9 games and now top of the Championship, CSKA Oddworld were looking to make it nine wins from ten and cement their place on top of the league. Abe Mudoken’s men had no problems against a poor Argyle side as JOHN TERRY scored twice, one either side of half time, to give the league leaders a deserved 2-0 win to keep them top of the tree.

Helsinki Hurricanes vs. Hangover FC

The two sides sat in the final two Play Off positions at the start of play met at the Hurricane Alley Stadium looking to move onwards and upwards with a win over their rivals. Scoring goals has been an issue so far for Dylan Moran’s side with just 8 goals scored but there superb defensive record – just four conceded – means that they are getting results. However, this record was blown to pieces in an amazing ten minute spell from Helsinki just before half time. First, MICHAEL BALLACK converted a penalty before ROBIN VAN PERSIE and YOANN GOURCUFF added two more to make it 3-0 at half time. A ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC penalty gave the Fuzzy Heads hope and when he made it 3-2 on 69 minutes, the comeback was on for them. But it was BALLACK who had the last word in stoppage time as he scored his second to make it 4-2 and move Hurricanes into a secure Play Off place.

Horden All Stars vs. Swansea City

After an inconsistent start, Stew Ferguson’s Horden All Stars have moved into Play Off contention and were looking to make further progress in their home game with Swansea City at the Horden Community Stadium. The Swans are struggling in 19th but they hit the first goal when LEE TRUNDLE put them in front after 10 minutes and they proceeded to hang on looking to get a badly needed win. In the end, the All Stars were thankful for a late equaliser from XABI ALONSO which gave them a point.

Melbourne vs. Nordic Thunder

After their blistering start to the season was recently halted by the Rampant Ravishers, the Nordic Thunder were looking to put that blip behind them and continue their pursuit of CSKA Oddworld as they travelled to last season’s beaten Play Off Finalists, Melbourne, who were sitting just behind them in fourth place at the start of the day. One goal settled the game and it came in the first half as Zac Smith saw his midfielder, MAROUANE FELLAINI, score to give the Demon’s a valuable three points and hand the Icemen their second successive away defeat.

Oldham North Stars vs. Doncaster Rovers

After sitting top of the Championship in the early season, Arnold J. Rimmer’s North Stars have slipped recently to 12th and were looking for a much needed win over Doncaster to put them back on track. A goalless first half increased the anxiety around the North Stars Ball Park with 20000 fans expecting more from their side. Eventually, they got what they desired when MAURO CAMORANESI put them in front just after the hour mark and this was quickly followed with a second from GIAMPAOLO PAZZINI to settle the nerves. A late SEGUNDO CASTILLO goal put the gloss on the result and moved the North Stars up the table.

Phoenix FC vs. Barnsley

With just one defeat so far, you’d expect Phoenix to be sitting much higher than 10th – a disappointing tally of just three wins and five draws tells the story of their season so far. However, Phoenix showed that today was not to be a night where they were in danger of a draw as they ripped the Tykes to pieces early on and went in 4-0 up at half time thanks to goals from DIMITAR BERBATOV from the spot, two from AMAURI and a JOSEPH YOBO strike. A second half without much action was lit up by JACOB BUTTERFIELD’s consolation goal for Barnsley but Phoenix are quietly moving into contention as they manage to turn draws into wins.

Preston North End vs. Sporting Stronburg

Sporting Stronburg manager Marcus von Stronburg can have no complaints about his sides ability to score goals but they haven’t managed to turn these into wins as yet – when they win, they win big – and they sat in 11th heading to Deepdale tonight. A first half goal from KLAAS JAN HUNTELAAR was cancelled out by NEIL MELLOR to leave it 1-1 at half time and it looked like another one of those games for Stronburg until they hit top form in the second half. A second HUNTELAAR goal and goals from DEMBA BA and JULIEN FAUBERT made it a convincing 4-1 win. More scrappy wins needed though if they are to challenge for promotion this season!

Rampant Ravishers vs. FC Libourne Saint-Seurin

Les Pingouins needed an away win at Pablo Hernandez’ Ravishers to put pressure on those above them as they were looking to move into the Play Off positions. However, the Ravishers could move top of the league if they won and were determined to get the three points they needed in front of their own fans in the Ann Summers Arena. One goal was all it took and it went the way of NWANKWO KANU to ensure that the Ravishers got the win they needed to move into the automatic promotion places.

It’s now incredibly tight at the top with four teams separated by just one point after Coedpoeth United’s slip up at Alcester Angels. Coedpoeth United retain top spot but Fafeful United, Tibbolini and Hunters FC are all in the hunt for the title at this stage of the season. European champions Discworld scored late winners in their last two games away at London Titans and Northern Extreme and look to be coming good for a charge towards the top spots whilst Bananas FC have continued their solid start to their first T2B season. Queensland Origin and Steel Panthers have a game in hand on the rest and the winner of their match would be handily placed in the top six. The pressure remains on New Bloc manager Hryhorii Zahorchak whose fling with SPORTS.tv presenter Hazel Harrison has done nothing to help his reputation with the fans who believe that their mid table placing is well below expectations after last season although they are improving now. Northern Extreme also find themselves well below expectations in 15th and need to improve their form to move upwards in the coming weeks or Kodaly McMaster may also have some tough questions to face.

At the foot of the table, Alcester Angels and Fanghunters are just out of the relegation zone but they are expected to be down towards the bottom this season anyway. The pairing of Essex Eagles and Capite Ad Calcem are surprise names in the bottom three with expectations of European finishes not being met. With Eagles out of the European competition already and Capite Ad Calcem struggling in the Europa League, the pressure will also be beginning to mount on Jack Browne and Cygnis Insignis if form does not improve in the coming weeks. Gnome’ania United remain winless and Joselyn Blanc will be desperate for a win as soon as possible with the Gnomes already six points from safety even at this early stage.

All of the top three sides slip up allowing the likes of Melbourne, Helsinki Hurricanes and Horden All Stars to make in-roads into their lead at the top of the table. CSKA Oddworld win just once in their three games and suffer their first defeat of the season whilst Rampant Ravishers take charge at the top of the league. A third straight away defeat for the Nordic Thunder leaves them outside the top two and in the first of the Play Off positions whilst Melbourne and Helsinki Hurricanes have definitely come into contention for the chase for automatic promotion. The thirteen T2B sides are now in the top 13 places with FC Libourne Saint-Seurin the lowest placed after a bad run of form. Bristol City are the highest placed non-T2B side but trail Les Pingouins by 4 points already. The last Play Off spot looks tight right now with Horden All Stars one game away from twelfth place but sitting in the last Play Off spot right now.

The manager who is likely to be most under pressure in the Championship is Hallendren Awakeners boss, V. Asher. With an automatic promotion challenge expected, their ninth place is not what the fans want to see. Could he become the first casualty of the season in the Championship?

More European action to come next!

Falcons returning with the old duo of Liedson & Pandev getting on the scoresheet & securing a 3rd win out of 9, albeit losing to Coedy afterwards, but that's to be expected! :) Nice to see us being the equal leading goalscorers in the Premier League, but also concerning that we're also equal 2nd for goals conceeded, we need to sort out that back 4!

Wednesday October 21st, 2009

Welcome to SPORTS.tv where we have all the news of another action-packed night in Europe where the Champions League and the Europa League took centre stage as our T2B sides looked to try and secure their chances of a place in the latter stages of the competitions.

We’ll start in the Champions League where our three sides have had mixed fortunes so far:

ChampionsLeague.jpg

After an unbeaten start to the defence of their Champions League trophy, Magnus Vestergaard’s Discworld were looking to put Dynamo Kiev to the sword at the Flying Turtle and take a stronghold over Group C. Things got off to a bright start when ABOU DIABY put them in front on 16 minutes but ROMAN EREMENKO and OLEG GUSEV gave the visitors a 2-1 half time lead to leave the defending champions in a little trouble. The equalising goal did come eventually – in the 81st minute – and it was scored by JACKSON MARTINEZ, the Colombian striker’s first goal for the club at just the right time.

GROUP C

Discworld 2-2 Dynamo Kiev

Wisla Krakow 0-5 Sporting

The draw between the top two and Sporting’s excellent away win in Poland mean that it looks set to be a three way struggle for supremacy over the final three games in Group C. All three sides have five points and Dynamo Kiev lead the way with Sporting’s goal difference giving them second spot. It would take a brave man to predict the outcome but the Disks extra away game in the final three could prove to be their downfall.

A difficult test for Hryhorii Zahorchak’s New Bloc as they travelled to the San Siro in Italy desperate to sneak an unlikely result against AC Milan to bolster their qualification hopes. However, their resistance was broken just before half time as FILIPPO INZAGHI put Milan in front and when GAETANO D’AGOSTINO doubled the lead on 56 minutes, all seemed lost for the Bloc. Former Milan striker PATO reduced the arrears ten minutes from time and New Bloc pushed for the leveller but couldn’t find it – salt was rubbed into their wounds when THIAGO MOTTA was sent off in stoppage time.

GROUP D

AC Milan 2-1 New Bloc

Olympique Marseille 1-2 Partizan

The worst possible result for New Bloc in the other game as Partizan won in France and it means that New Bloc really need to find a positive result when they face Milan in their next home game. Milan lead the group with a 100% record with Partizan second, three points ahead of New Bloc. Marseille remain pointless at the bottom of the group.

A 100% record meant that Coedpoeth United’s trip to San Siro the night after New Bloc would see them start in top spot over Inter Milan who had slipped up at home to Rubin last time out. However, things went dreadfully wrong from the start for Coedy as they found themselves 3-0 down by half time. MARCO MATERAZZI’s penalty started the scoring, DAVID LUIZ’s own goal doubled the Italians lead and ROBERTO SOLDADO made it 3-0 at half time. SALVADOR CABANAS added a fourth in the second half to leave Coedy stunned and looking nervously over the shoulder.

GROUP H

Inter Milan 4-0 Coedpoeth United

Panathanaikos 2-3 Rubin

The victory for Rubin in Greece means that Coedy are just two points ahead of them in second place, a point behind Inter Milan who lead the group. Panathanaikos are bottom with no points and the team that slips up to the Greeks – if there is one – could be the team to miss out on the next round.

EuropaLeague.jpg

In Group B, Steel Panthers’ solid start was put to the test as they travelled to Dinamo Moscow. ANDRIY VORONIN put the Russian’s ahead on the hour but TIM DE CLER preserved Stix Zadinia’s unbeaten start to the group with an equaliser and the Panthers qualification hopes are boosted with another unbeaten game.

GROUP B

Dinamo Moscow 0-0 Steel Panthers

Roma 0-3 Athletic Bilbao

A surprisingly comfortable win for the Spanish side, Bilbao, means that they sit top of the group with Panthers second, two points behind on 5 points. Dinamo Moscow have 2 points and Roma the solitary 1 point and one more win should seal the Panthers place in the next round.

With one point so far, Capite Ad Calcem travelled to Rome for the ‘Roman’ derby with Lazio knowing that they could not afford to lose in the Olympic Stadium. For 78 minutes, the game remained goalless and it looked as if Capite Ad Calcem would get a point until TOMASSO ROCCHI struck to put Lazio in front. A second goal followed from ANDREA TESTA and it looks very difficult now for Capite Ad Calcem to progress unless they win their final three games.

GROUP D

Lazio 2-0 Capite Ad Calcem

Lazio’s win moves them back into contention on 4 points but Rapid Vienna and Fenerbahce lead the way on 5 points – 4 better than Capite Ad Calcem’s single point which leaves them bottom of the group. It looks an extremely difficult ask for the Romans to progress and victory over Lazio at The Coliseum next time out is a must.

After two draws so far, London Titans knew that they needed to find a win soon if they were to stay in with a chance of qualifying for the next round in Group E. PSV travelled to the Nike Arena and, despite a poor start, would be a difficult opponent considering their previous Champions League experiences. In a tense game, GONZALO HIGUAIN gave the Thames Warriors an early lead which they then looked to hold onto for the night. They weren’t helped by the sending off of PETAR ZANEV with half hour left but they managed to sneak home and give themselves a real chance of making the next stage.

GROUP E

Genoa 0-1 Club Brugge

London Titans 1-0 PSV

The Titans’ win moves them top of the group but 2 points covers all four sides and the top two places remain up for grabs. The Titans’ trip to Holland for the return with PSV next time could be crucial as could the meeting of Genoa and Brugge in Belgium with the two sides locked together with 4 points.

A 100% start for Northern Extreme meant that they were in pole position for qualification in Group F but they faced a tricky trip to Germany to face Werder Bremen despite the poor start made by the German side. And it proved tough as CLAUDIO PIZARRO fired Bremen into the lead on half an hour. Extreme pushed for an equaliser but succumbed to defeat with 20 minutes left as HUGO ALMEIDA made it 2-0 to send the Germans top of the group.

GROUP F

Lille 1-1 CFR Cluj

Werder Bremen 2-0 Northern Extreme

Werder Bremen and Northern Extreme top the group with 6 points and the Romanian side CFR Cluj look to have the best chance of denying them a place in the next round just 2 points behind in third. The return game between Bremen and Extreme next time out could be crucial in determining who goes through top and who fights it out with Cluj for the final place.

Saturday 17th October

We’ve got two T2B Premiership and three T2B Championship programmes to look back at and work out how it has affected the league standings and the early places of the 33 T2B teams looking to have a great first season. Let’s start with the T2B Premiership where we have had two complete sets of fixtures as well as New Bloc and Capite Ad Calcem’s re-arranged game.

PremierLeague.gif

ROUND 10 – October 24

Capite Ad Calcem 4-0 Bananas FC

(Pirlo 8, pen 33, McFadden 23, Papastathopoulos 44)

Coedpoeth United 0-0 Hunters FC

Discworld 0-1 Fafeful United

(Cavani 51)

Maynor Figueroa sent off for Discworld 90+1

Fanghunters 3-2 Tibbolini

(Adebayor 12, 72, Trezeguet 61 / Milito 65, Bilayetdinov 69)

Gnome’ania United 1-1 Essendon

(Zaki 24 / Alex 51)

New Bloc 0-1 Flackwell Falcons

(Liedson 42)

Northern Extreme 0-0 London Titans

Queensland Origin 2-0 Alcester Angels

(Caldwell 33, Babel 48)

Gary Caldwell sent off for Queensland Origin 79

Steel Panthers 1-2 Boreham Badgers

(Nelsen 39 / Niang 24, Dempsey 46)

Welsh Wizards 1-2 Essex Eagles

(Zarate pen 10 / Gilardino 63, Carrick 90+3)

Mauro Zarate missed penalty for Welsh Wizards 51

Fafeful United go two points clear at the top after their win over Discworld whilst their nearest rivals – Coedpoeth United, Hunters FC and Tibbolini – all fail to win their games.

Capite Ad Calcem hit Bananas for a 4-0 win – is this their turning point?

Essex Eagles snatch a late winner at the Welsh Wizards who could have gone 2-0 when they missed a penalty. Is that a turning point for Jack Browne’s Eagles?

More woe for Gnome’ania United as they throw away a 1-0 lead at home to Essendon and remain winless after 10 games of the season.

CocaColaChampionship.jpg

ROUND 14 – October 24

Coventry City 2-0 Plymouth Argyle

Nottingham Forest 2-0 Barnsley

Preston North End 0-0 Doncaster Rovers

BC Lions 1-2 Nordic Thunder

In their fourteenth game of the season, Rampant Ravishers finally lose as they are hammered 3-0 by Arnold Rimmer’s North Stars and lose their top spot in the Championship.

CSKA Oddworld and Nordic Thunder win to move above the Ravishers into the automatic promotion spots.

Helsinki Hurricanes and Melbourne remain secure in the Play Off positions after their results.

Oldham North Star’s win over the Ravishers means that they move into the final Play Off spot although the remaining T2B sides are all within three points of them.

Poorest result of the weekend goes to Sporting Stronburg who needed a last minute goal to salvage a point away at Peterborough United.

With FM11 on the scene I've come back on here, and surprised to see this is still going, given I thought it had died long ago.

As far as my Essendon bombers, good to see the vetrans in Ronaldo and Raul getting it done in a 5-0 victory, but sadly we still sit mid table as we did all of last season... come on boys!

Romans mash Bananas!

Capite Ad Calcem picked up a much needed 3 points with a 4-0 thumping of fierce rivals Bananas FC. Manager Cygnis Insignis was clearly delighted with the result. "I'm delighted. We always knew it would be an easy game as the Bananas team is far inferior to ours, but they have the potential to be a banana skin for us, so I am happy we avoided slipping today. Pirlo was influential with 2 goals from midfield, and it's nice to see youngsters like McFadden and Papatath....Papastopo......the Greek lad to get on the scoresheet and make names for themselves."

  • 2 weeks later...

Have run into problems with Steam and have had to uninstall the damn thing. With FM10 installed via Steam, this has caused some issues. I could re-install FM10 - if I knew where I'd put the disk!

Obviously, that causes problems with T2B. I'm in two minds about it. With my temporary disappearance, there are only half the people still around the sign up and I'm not sure whether I have the desire to find the disk and reinstall etc ...

I have also bought FM11 - that's where my issues with STEAM arose - and am eager to use it. I'm thinking of something similar to T2B but not with the big set-up process.

Unfortunately, I think that means T2B is dead. Apologies to all. Please watch out for my FM11 sign up when I get it sorted - maybe this weekend.

I'll ask a mod to close this thread. Sorry folks.
