FM08: A Race Odyssey

Ok so here it is, the day you never thought would come, today is the day FM meets F1. Yes you heard me correctly a sign up using FM with a twist of F1. Intrigued? I was too when I first thought of it but I’ve eventually come up with a format which I think will work.

Here’s how things will work, at the moment there are 11 constructors in F1 and 22 drivers. As far as I know there are no leagues in FM with 11 teams so I set out to find a league with 10 or 12 teams. I promptly stumbled upon the Scottish Premier league and decided that was the league to use. First of all we need 24 “drivers†they will in fact be strikers created by the people who sign up, they all start with the same CA and all have the same PA so the only difference in the “drivers†will be how quickly they improve. They will also all be 17 at the start of the game so they have the same amount of time to reach their peak.

So we’ll have the drivers and we’ll need some constructors, as you sign up you decide what team you want to be part of and eventually we’ll have 12 teams of two. Next the two of you decide a team name and the pair of you get shipped off to a SPL team, the remaining teams are shipped out to the rest of the SPL teams and we’re ready to go.

The season kicks off and so does our F1 style contest, the strikers score points by playing and scoring and lose points for yellow and red cards.

Appearance: 5 points

Goal: 10 points

Yellow Card: -2 points (two yellows equal one red so -5 points)

Red Card: -5 points

Each calendar month in the game will represent one race so at the end of the month the striker with the most points gets 1st place, points are then awarded based on position as in F1.

1st - 10 points

2nd - 8 points

3rd - 6 points

4th - 5 points

5th - 4 points

6th - 3 points

7th - 2 points

8th - 1 point

When the next month in FM starts so does the next race and we follow our drivers and constructors through until the end of the season when we’ll have our driver and constructor champions.

Inevitably the players will not all stay at their starting club but that won’t damage their chances, they continue to score points regardless of where they are playing, however as in F1 there is a set amount of “races†the first “race†takes place in August and the season shall conclude at the end of May. Any appearences made or goals scored between this time are not counted as is the case with international and friendly games/goals.

I of course meant tonight in New Zealand, forgetting most of you are in Europe so apologies about that. Anyway here's a little preview for the season.

Season Preview - any appearances or goals mentioned in this report were in Friendly games and therefore do not count towards your player total.

After a long summer of testing the first race of the season approached, the experts had all put their money on the boys at Gretna, Team 5 for the constructors and drivers championship. Loic Flamilson was the favourite going into the race as he was the only player to take part in every one of his sides friendlies, with a record of 4 goals in 6 games he was looking good. Not far behind him was team mate Jack Villeneuve with 3 goals in 5 and although Gretna are predicted to finish 12th and last in the SPL they may need their young strikers more than any other team.

Another team tipped for great things this season is Team 9, Kilmarnock are predicted a 6th place finish and with Hawkins and Billcliffe having scored 3 in 3 and 3 in 4 respectively it looks like that is a realistic target.

Nick Harvey could be a good outside bet for the 1st win of the season the St Mirren man was in fine form scoring 3 goals in 4 games. Elliot Druce is thought to be up amongst the point scorers aswell with 2 goals in 3 games.

As for the rest of the field it could go any number of ways, if the Celtic or Rangers players get given a chance the general feeling is they could be a serious threat. Basically this means the other players didn’t see much football and obviously if they don’t play there’s not much to say about them but I’ll try to keep them involved as much as possible until they start playing regularly and are involved anyway.

Race 1 - August

As predicted Loic Flamilson got off to a flying start from pole position, he scored Gretna’s only goal in a 1-2 loss to Falkirk. Jack Villeneuve started from second and also played for Gretna consequently holding onto his place but Arthur White was in the Falkirk Starting 11 and was not far behind. A 2-0 win for Celtic against Motherwell produced the only other appearance for one of our guys on day one with Mike Billcliffe playing for the losing side.

Sunday came and went with Rangers vs. Inverness CT producing no points for Teams 8 and 11. But a surprise start for Fuzzy Lightning in Mondays game between Dundee Utd and Aberdeen saw him right on Billcliffe's tail, who himself wasn't too far behind the boys at Gretna.

The second game of the season showed again that the experts might have been right, although Gretna lost 4-1 to Hibernian both Flamilson and Villeneuve played with Flamilson scoring again, increasing his lead over his team mate. No other players were involved in Saturdays games but on Sunday Arthur White played in a 0-1 loss to Celtic meaning he hangs on to third place.

Match day 3 and Flamilson put in his fastest lap so far, another appearance and another goal this time in a 3-1 defeat against Hearts. Villeneuve played again and received man of the match but it wasn’t going to be nearly enough as Flamilson pulled away. Arthur White didn’t feature for Falkirk which saw him slip away from the clearly superior Team 5 drivers but an appearance from Mike Billcliffe put pressure on White to step up his game. Meanwhile in Dundee Utd’s 2-2 draw with Hibs, Elliot Druce came on in the 85th minute seeing him almost overtake his team mate Fuzzy Lightning. Although he didn’t get on Lewis Hamilton can take hope from the fact he was selected on the bench for the clash between St Mirren and Inverness CT.

The first race of the season was coming to an end, Mike Billcliffe was making late charge to try and secure a podium finish with a goal against Rangers in a 1-2 defeat. His closest rival Arthur White was having engine problems and had slowed dramatically up to the point where he was no longer playing, losing his 3rd place to Billcliffe however White's team mate Mikael Schøler was given a start and got the equaliser in a 1-1 draw with St Mirren where Lewis Hamilton was once again on the bench, surely it’s only a matter of time before he gets a game. As White crawled home he was devastated to see Schøler closing in on him and as they came down the home straight the for the penultimate lap the Dane put his foot down and took 4th place.

So with a whole lot of drama unfolding behind them the big question was who would win the race, could Villeneuve catch his team mate or would Team 5 tell him to ease off and make sure they got the one two finish. It would take a hatrick from Villeneuve and no goals from Flamilson just to catch him and then he still had to pass him. Gretna recorded their first win of the season with 10 men, getting a 2-1 win over Motherwell, for Villeneuve fans it was good news. If Flamilson had seen red and their man had scored both goals he'd be level. Neither was sent off and neither scored leaving Loic Flamilson way out in front. However Billcliffe's goal had sent him flying up behind Villeneuve and a moment of lost concentration from Jack saw Mike slip past.

As they entered the final lap it would be a League Cup game that decided the winner, both Fuzzy Lightning and Mikael Schøler played but couldn’t score. Andrew Billen on the other hand decided it was time he announced his arrival on the scene, scoring in a 5-0 demolition of Montrose unfortunately picking up a yellow card and becoming the first player to go in the book, not a welcome record I’m sure. Mike Billcliffe proved he was a serious contender for second place with yet another goal in a 3-1 win for his side.

It all came down to the game between Gretna and Partick Thistle, if Villeneuve failed to score twice he was out of the running for second and with Flamilson in the starting line-up it meant anything other than a red card for the Frenchman would see him win the 1st race. Anyone who was hoping for a miracle was desperately disappointed as Villeneuve failed to score and was left in 3rd. Flamilson scored twice to record an impressive 2-0 victory for Gretna bagging a victory in the first race.

Final Positions to follow

3rd Jack Villeneuve - 6 points

4th Mikael Schøler - 5 points

5th Andrew Billen - 4 points

6th Arthur White - 3 points

Driver of the Day: Easiest decision ever, it’s got to be Loic Flamilson. He led the race from start to finish and the pre-season favourite looks good value for money by anybody’s standard. He kept cool under early pressure from his team mate and as the race went on increased his lead to record a dominant victory. A special mention also for Mike Billcliffe who put in a phenomenal last couple of laps to pass Villeneuve who was looking odds on for 2nd place. And it seems the pundits do know what they’re on about as 3 of their 4 tips for success in the first race took the podium positions.

Well not the best of starts, but like WW's sign up it might be a sesaon or two until the the bigger team players make their mark leaving the lesser team players battling it out in the early seasons.

Will be interesting to see how this goes as the bigger team players get up to speed and start playing. But I don't think players will stay at the lower teams for long. What CA and PA were we given?
