[FM18] I didn't mean to Braga bout The Quarry, but...

We're off on a new adventure, with a club with a lot of potential.

I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to Merthyr Town, but I just really don't want to play in the Premiership right now(I hope to get back to it later, but I always think that and never pull through), I do hate leaving a thread with work to do, though...

Internet is still garbage, so I don't know how the updates are going to work either, but I really want to get stuck into FM, and far prefer saves with threads these days.

So. Braga, one of the bigger clubs in Portugal, but a tier below Sporting/Benfica/Porto, good facilities, youth academies, reasonable finances, and a solid squad. Also, a badass stadium.

Staff situation is rough, but easily fixable.

Here are some of the key players.

Very sturdy in midfield and the wings, I put in Hassan despite the staff not especially rating him, I really like him, quite a complete player.

First order of business was terminating this guys loan.

Reason? Well, we had a very similar, but younger player in the B Team, why develop a Porto castoff instead opf one of our brightest talents?

This guy was also in the B team... :idiot:

33dec3729ad242939cf44d0181d5f6f1.png

Then there's the youth situation....

Not all of these will hit close to that ability, but that is one hell of an amount of potential first team players to start with! Shame about Neto and Jordao being locked into moves to Lazio.

These few are amongst the highlights.

Goncalves looks like a potential star, Carmo, I think I like as a CB or DM more than fullback, and I've been a massive fan of Trincao in FM for ages, sign him at lots of clubs, great as a winger, inside forward, and if you work on his finishing(which I will) he can do a job up front.

Scored the winning/only goal in the first pre-season game. Out to impress!

I do, he's on loan with a 2.67m option to buy.

I found him tends to make so many mistakes :( Not sure how he plays under you.

Still in pre-season, and he's playing well, but I did feel I needed more, as the two behind him in the depth chart aren't good at all.

Despite having budgets off, I can still try for free agents, if I can convince them to forego sign on and agent fees.

He's a bit un-athletic, but for free and low wages he adds a lot to the team in the medium term.

Braga have always interested me as a team to manage, especially this year. There is definitely a lot a talent as highlighted here - Xadas would have to be my personal favourite. The signing of Wollscheid is interesting but he provides some experience and is a half-decent defender as seen when he was at Stoke. Good luck!

Couldn't get over Xadas sitting in the reserves....

Braga do have some good players. Interested to see how you use Wollscheid, especially with his pace.

Aye, pace is an issue, but his positioning and concentration should see him make plenty of interceptions.

So, an update!

Finally finished the summer window, it's been slow as I've not only been tinkering with tactics, but I've been looking through other clubs squads, to see what's available for loan, who's promising and worth keeping an eye on, usual stuff. What I also like to do is check what business clubs are up to, and maybe undercut the odd deal, or stick my oar in on a flier. It's been a great summer for that, too, as I've got some cracking talents landed.

0f3c7ecd13bdc3568b3199d0e64752ea.png

3c0f37724ece4d6de149c932fa3b318e.png

Porto and Sporting have started very badly, we've been great notably a 2-1 win away at Sporting with an 88th minute winner.

Was worried after the first few games, wins, but we should have done better. The 2nd leg with Vojvodina and the Sporting game have me in much better spirits.

b544634b8735dfc1c55fab9364fb3b9a.png

Nasty group, and Athletic could be quite angry with us, as you'll see soon.

On to business!

fa86238765d3ef944db28827b178661e.png

As I said earlier, transfers are still possible despite me turning off first window budgets, long as it's a free deal and they accept no sign on bonus or agents fees. Youths rarely get annoyed by this, but it made Wollscheid take a bit more effort than it should have.

Anyway, we have Wollscheid to strengthen the defence, and Ventura to provide depth at GK, as one of the two keepers is out for a long time.

49a7b2cd76a0efdc8569383ca6eb8a9c.png

Handy depth and can tutor weak personality youth for very little wages. Perfect.

The rest are more interesting. Ormaetxea is a 16 year old newgen free agent I saw Athletic bidding on, so I threw my hat in the ring and when he requested 350pw, I offered 550, to make him accept on the spot. Similar deal with Baks, but I can't remember from what club, staff don't rate his PA, so looks like a misfire. Worth the attempt though, can't win them all. Melegoni is a cracking midfield prospect, so we loaned him in as while I've been messing with formations, I've been caught short at CM. More importantly, he has a mandatory future fee of 4.4m in the deal, so he's our long term.

bf19efa16f79433ffe3504161a59fded.png93932e520ca5bb3bcc2da58e46137d11.png573c136cc7d10f5142398a698516a220.png

Ormaetxea is now rated as hottest prospect at the club, could be a real gem on our hands. Baks? Swing and a miss. Melegoni is quality.

We didn't stop there, though, I found a few 15 year olds, bid on by German clubs, same deal, offered them enough to accept on the spot ahead of more reputable clubs, but since they're 15 they can't join yet. Not a real issue, they join on trial and can train with us(as well as play youth games) until they turn 16. They should develop the same as a contracted player.

Engemann looks like a really handy DM, swept from under Leverkusen. I think Heimann could become a great striker, if his OTB improves, RBL had an offer in before I done the dirty on them, along with two mid table sides I can't remember.

Then there's the absolutely bonkers Oenning! Ripped from under Bayern themselves, I had to give him an offer of a few grand a week to get him to accept on the spot. I don't regret it though as he's as good as most of my senior wingbacks already, and even if he doesn't improve much would get in the squad easily already!

I should also point out, I missed out on two French kids, as I forgot to offer enough for them to accept on the spot. One went to PSG, and is rated as their best prospect... :(

So, I've had a shufty through the transfer clauses from previous deals, and beside the sheer number of them, I noticed a couple of key ones...

I suppose you could try do a swap deal if you ever want rid?

I guess it applies the one to Monaco, then the 3rd party takes 67% of the remainder.

Thought we were done like dinner when Aboubacar scored two in a minute, but went for it chucking on a second striker, in Paulinho. Not only instantly scored, but put in the assist for the winner.

Finally, we reach January, and a terribly exciting one at that!

On pitch things are going super well, leading the league and through our Europa group to face Red Bull Salzburg. Oddly, Real Madrid dropped in it, so...... ****

I've already brought in 6 players! Stretched finances near to the limit, but it's going to be amazing long term. Can't see doing much more, barring sales, and replacements if anyone good goes.

Richard was quite expensive for us, as he's a risk, but he looks an amazing prospect. Peiser is for tutoring, and hopefully I can somehow get him to become a HOYD. Reyes is a nice upgrade at CB.

Joveljic is another cracking prospect, Gamboa is a HG lad I liked in a FMT save in 17, also, they had give us back 50%! Ricca is brilliant, dang near perfect attribute balance for a fullback, though I'll try and get his OTB up.

Also, a frankly daft deal came up, set up a future transfer for Rodrygo, 2m rising to 2.5m.....

da066cee658672388fb9ae04b5bd41d5.png

The future is bright!!!

Also, I haven't mentioned what I'm doing tactically, that's because I'm not really set, I've been switching between a few shapes, not 100% happy with any yet.

The first two being the more standard/attacking shapes, and the last two countering against strong sides.

I couldn't get over it, couldn't say no at that price, even though money was already tight enough.

He was only there for that game, usually it's Danilo.

I'm not sure yet, kind of humming and hawing about the CM pair and wings. He's not as active in the play when we're on the ball as I've got guys to be in 17, though I have't been training anyone for the role yet.

Can't wait to see your findings.

Decided to take a punt on a load of cheap Portugese talents and a few others that caught my eye, on deadline day both my RB's went for good money, 8m helps a lot, replacing them both for 950k was a nice move, gotta love expiring contracts!

At @SixPointer's suggestion, I looked up Duarte Valente and he is awesome, 3 senior games for us already, and he didn't look out of place, a real steal. Sousa looks at least like he'll be a decent backup eventually, and Oliveira is a low risk flier on a player that could be useful.

Himeur was 5* when I signed him and 16, half a star drop already, might be an expensive(relatively) misfire. Bernas and Arcanjo are cheap punts, can't lose.

Enegmann you've already seen, but he's coming along nicely. Clemente's contract was expiring and I managed to get in there, then use "buy now" for super cheap. Looks awesome! Same story with Rudi, luckily avoiding much dealing the the notoriously hardass Athletic.

2e14132f24a245908ef172ceb696ff14.pngf45ea1cb738315b2da284e7b2e35d4f9.png

Palencia was the same as Rudi and Clemente, I tried dealing with Barca first and they weren't interested, luckily he'd talk with us and we got the deal done. Tejero was much easier, I offered Real his value and they accepted. Good lads.

Youth Intake Day!

I forgot to mention, in January, chief amongst the signings was a new HOYD, a didn't like the look of the guy already at the club. I'd have done it instantly at the start, but no one really good was interested. Patience was rewarded when Kristjaan Speakman became available, one of the very best in the game, and even ideally has a preferred formation that has mostly players that suit our systems(barring the Libero, but you expect that to be a conversion these days). Also early on we had Junior COaching and Youth Recruitment upgraded, hitting Exceptional and Well Established, respectively.

He rewards us with an instant "Golden Generation", and ooh boy, it looks a legit one, especially considering that Braga already had a strong selection of youth. Also, most of the key members of the intake have (reasonably at least) good personalities.

Damn. That's quite the intake.

As I haven't played FM18 - is the "Golden age" message common? Would a generational talent be preferred?

Golden generation is fairly common, all it means is there's a group of players who could reach a good first team level. For example, a non-league team in England could get a group, but they'd still be non-league level players.

Generation talent is definitely the better result.
