Our first run out in the Champions League was short-lived, losing both home and away to a Levski Sofia side that I thought we stood a chance against. Dropping down to the Europa League we played against Andorran side Lusitans. They were brushed aside as expected and saw ourselves drawn against Slovan Bratislava in the third qualifying round. A very close tie that saw us draw 1-1 at home followed by a heart-breaking 2-1 loss in the away leg. The league went much as expected - we gained enough points to have won the league on each of the previous three seasons, but Cliftonville went just one win better to consign us to second place.Glenn Longstaff was our top scorer, on loan to us from Cliftonville, and he will join us permanently in the summer to lead our line going forward. Chris Haughey and Daren Byrne were newly inducted into our best eleven. This season also saw our first ever international caps, with first Kevin Scannell and then alter Ryan Gray making their debuts for Northern Ireland. Finally, we are up against teams like Anderlecht, Standard Liège, Genk and Gent. The two latter I will get confused all the time, and I will probably write wrong or somehow reference them wrong in the future, so apologies in advance. I struggled to find good players during the summer, mostly because any good players went to other teams, but also because the board slashed our wage budget down. I did manage to sell a couple of players and bring in a few, but once again I had to rely on loanees. I promise, I'll try to avoid it in future seasons. A couple of the best loanees from last season were either unwilling to join, or not allowed by their team, so I had to bring in a couple of new ones. The season itself started pretty good, but after a few wins we got a major injury crisis and lost 7 games in a row, only scoring 2 goals. This made us plummet down the table, but luckily, the winter break were not far away. I set up a couple of very easy friendlies during the break to lift the team spirit and some major wins seemed to improve the general atmosphere. We then won a couple of matches in a row and climbed a bit up again. The rest of the season were a mixed bag, but we were far off the single relegation spot at any time. As regular league table drew to a close, I were surprised to see we had finished in 6th place. This meant we went into the Championship stage along Standard Liège, Genk, Club Brugge, Charleroi and Anderlecht. All except Anderlecht were far ahead, but we did ok and managed to climb past them and finish in 5th place. Now, strange Belgian rules state that the teams who finished in 7th to 15th go into the "European playoff". They are split into two groups and the winner of each play a playoff. Then the winner of that playoff play play the team finishing 5th in the Championship group and the winner qualifies for Europe. So since I finished 5th, I had to play a final playoff game against Gent. Gent won the European playoffs, even though they finished 10th in the league. The game itself was an exciting one. The first half were more a standoff than anything else, but we finally took the lead halfway into the second half by a good header after a cross. The equalized 13 minutes before time when they won the second ball after a corner and worked it back in and scored from a close shot. The game went to extra time. Some chances for both teams, but no big ones until we got a pen just before the game went to pens. However, we missed it! So penalties were going to decide who are heading into Europe next season. We missed our second pen, but they missed their third to it was equal before the 4th round. They missed and we scored. They once again missed and we were winners. So we are heading into Europe next season! The Europa League I think, but I'll take it! We actually made money this season, but we also had to expand the stadium, so we are still quite deep in the red. Hopefully, Europa will pay a bit and we will keep making money so we finally can improve stuff. And I might get some coaching badges as well... Just been offered the Argentina job now: Not that I'm going to take it unless I get sacked from Spain On a marginally related note - Jaap Stam is currently Northern Ireland manager... But a great season it was as we won our first trophy, taking the League 1 title by 3 points to earn promotion to the Championship. League Table We started out the season great with 3 shutout victories and stayed in first until we fell 1-2 to Ayr in December to give them the lead. It was a two team race all the way, luckily they collapsed at the end while we won our last 4 to overtake them. Both of us were promoted though. We won this year through defense. Only 45 goals scored but only 30 conceded in 36 games. Losing out striker, Evan Evans, for the season to a knee injury was a major blow but we ground out several 1-0 wins playing possession football. Cups Definitely our best cup performances yet. We swept our group in the Betfred Cup, including a win over the winners of the League Championship Patrick Thistle. Evan Evans was huge, scoring all 9 of our goals in the group. We then had a game away at Rangers and that didn't go so well, 0-3. In the IRN-BRU, we knocked off Queen's Park in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 tie, then took down Patrick Thistle again 2-0. Unfortunately, that's where Evans injured his knee. We were then knocked out by Welsh side Bangor City for the second straight season 0-1. We got a bad draw in the Scottish Cup, facing Inverness CT first. We managed a 1-1 draw at home in an even game before falling 0-1 at Inverness. Key Players Striker Steven McConkey - with Evans going down, the Northern Irish 21 year old I signed last season stepped up admirably, scoring 17 goals, 14 in the league. CM Eric Ogilvie - I think a key to our outstanding defensive performance was Ogilvie, signed on a free from Morton. Primarily a left back in his career, I put him in my midfield to be my defensive wall, something we've lacked in previous seasons. CM Jim MacLeod - Ogilvie's partner in the middle, moving him out of the holding midfielder role allowed him to be more dynamic, leading the team in chances created. GK Stevie MacLeod - Our captain did a great job with 18 clean sheets overall and 14 of 31 in the league. To be fair, he didn't get challenged as often as most other keepers did and his backup also had 3 clean sheets in 5 games. Youth Intake Still haven't gotten anything useful out of it yet. Finances Doing fine, the board keeps pumping money in. Somehow we're paying the most in wages in the league by far and we're still only using about half of our payroll budget. We did pay Evan Evans a stupid amount to lure him to our team permanently, but even our backups are making far more than those on other teams. Next Season The goal will be survival. I think we can do it, but we'll have to get better offensively. Going to look to strengthen my left back and right midfielder positions to hopefully make our attack more dynamic. Probably going to rely more heavily on loans this season while we get established in the Championship and figure out who is good enough to keep their spots. McConkey looks a decent prospect and you can't argue with MacLeoads' record - a great keeper is worth his weight in gold. Looking forward to seeing how you get on with the step up. DF: Aldo Bonavita: Great performances from the on-loan Italian U21 from AC Milan. M: Dejan Kulusevski: On-loan from Atalanta, the Swedish winger was great down the left side. M: Kevin Montaperto: Young Italian on loan from AC Milan, did a great job on the right. M: Simone Santoro: Highly talented young Italian who was great in the middle of the park. He has a promising future I think. Named Serie B Player of the Year M: Petar Briek - Croatian midfielder loaned from Genoa. AM: Caio - Brazilian attacking midfielder loaned from At. Madrid. Came in to the team towards the end of the season and did well. S: Antonino La Gumina: Did well in the first half of the year but then lost a bit of form which opened the door to… S: Besmir Shullani: Italian U21 spent the first half of the year as understudy to Lan Gumina but once he got his chance, the AC Milan loanee didn’t look back scoring nearly a goal a game. Youth Prospect: Meant to do this last season but forgot, here is the best of this years batch of new talent: Vito Bigioni: Young left-back with good potential. So a season which went better than I could have imagined at the start of the season. What next year will bring who knows but I will be delighted to survive. That is all that matters really. We sold long term players such as Wout Faes and Olivier Rommens, and we also released a couple of the fringe players we've had for a while. This meant we also brought in a load of players, and I'll admit not all were perfect buys, but some were REALLY good! The start of the season itself were a bit hampered by the European games, but more on that later. In the league we were really struggling to find anything resembling form, and we lost quite a bit, and I think that had something to do with the European games causing us to field poorer players, but also the fact that we had a lot of new players in the squad and the cohesion wasn't there. We mostly stayed mid table though, so we were never part of the survival fight, but also a bit of the top teams. We did turn out to be a pain for the big teams so we actually picked a few points of them this season. In the end we finished just behind the Championship stage so we had to fight for the single last European spot with all the other teams. So we went into the European Playoff Stage Group A. Since we took with us half our points we had a small lead on the other teams, and we started good by winning out first 3 matches in the stage. With 3 games left we were secured to win, lucky for us since we lost the last few matches. In the playoff match against the winner of Group B we faced Sint-Truidense and we won 3-2 in the end after a late pen. In the playoff final against the second lowest team from the Championship stage we met Charleroi. We hit one in the 2nd minute and then just hung on for the rest of match to win it. So we are heading into Europe again next season. Quite surprising, but I'll take it! So we had our first go in Europe this season and we entered into the Europa League 2nd qualifying round. Here we drew Ferencváros of Hungary. We dispatched them 4-0 at home and 2-0 away to qualify quite easily. In the 3rd qualifying round we met Beşiktaş of Turkey, a very tough draw. At home we beat them 2-0 and in Turkey we just countered them the whole game long and won amazingly 5-1. In the playoff stage we got AZ of Holland. Away we held them to 0-0 and just about held on to a 2-1 win to get to the group stage. Here got very manageable draw and faced Legia Warzawa of Poland, Amiens of France, and Sevilla of Spain. We won our first two matches against Legia and Amiens, but lost away to Sevillla. At home we somehow beat the Spaniards and won against Legia again. In the final match we drew to Amiens, but we were already through as the winner of the group! In the 1st knockout round we got drawn against Fiorentina of Italy and we actually beat them 1-0 both home and away to go through. Our journey ended in the next round though as we got a really tough draw against Lyon of France. We managed a very credible 2-2 result at home, but they showed their class and beat us 2-0 in France. Still, a great run for us. We made a lot of money this season, mostly due to the Europa League prize money. At the moment I'm waiting for improvements to both youth and training facilities, but the money will hopefully help me keep building the club. I've been trying to push this towards a youth focus, since we are getting quite a lot of good youngsters through, but our poor facilities are hindering their improvements, so it's not easy at the moment. Still, it's a long term goal to have local players in the squad. Current first 11: GK: Francky Ipoua-Talla - Got him for free from a Cameroonian side before the season and intended for him to be second choice, but he clawed his way to a starting spot. DR: Abdoul Karim Camara - Currently on loan, but will join us permanently this summer after his contract is done at Bordeaux. DC: Khadim Joher Rassoul - Brought in on a free from Lokeren before the season, a very solid center back. DC: Gaël Andonian - Just finished our 4th season with us and have been with us up the leagues. Still a very good defender. DL: Deiver Machado - Our most attacking defender had a great season. Been with us for 3 seasons now. DM: Felipe Carballo - Does very well as a half back, but can also play further up if needed. MC: Arnau Puigmal - On loan from Man Utd, but I'm working on convincing Mourinho to let him go on the cheap, but it's not working yet. MC: Roberto Beccaro - Yes, another loanee, but he is really good! Also one I want to sign permanently. AMR: Andrea Brando Rocchiccioli - The name doesn't really roll nicely of the tongue, but his performances makes me drool! 26 goals and 20 assists from the wing position is just nuts. Got him for free from Siena before the season and he is now worth over £6M! Class player! AML: Béni Badibanga - Our talisman and captain! 4 seasons with us and always plays good. SC: Haji Wright - The big American came in from Schalke before the season and he showed great scoring in Europe, but struggled a bit more in the league. Tecmo Posted October 6, 2018 Share Posted October 6, 2018 2029-2030 Solid first season in the Scottish Championship as we finished 5th, just missing the playoffs on goal differential. League Table Very much three different parts to the season. A couple 5-1 losses in our first 8 games and we were sitting in 9th place. A great midseason run then got us all the way up to 3rd before the last 10 games, of which we only won 2. But overall I'm pretty happy and think we'll be in great shape to make the playoffs next season. Cups The Betfred Cup didn't go too well for us this year as we only managed 4 points finished 3rd in our group. In the IRN-BRU Cup, we won our first game in extra time over the Patrick Thistle U20s before losing at home to Raith 1-2 in the Fourth Round. The Scottish Cup went much better though. After squeezing by Lossiemouth in our first game, we managed a convincing win over Premier side Patrick Thistle 2-1, then stunned Rangers in our house 3-2. That got us to our first Quarter Final, where we were pretty well dominated by Ross County 0-2. Key Players Steven McConkey took over as our main striker and finished tied for 3rd in the league with 22 goals scored along with 7 assists and 4 more cup goals. Jordan Archibald was named our player of the year, claiming the wide playermaker role on the left side of the midfield. We signed him last season on a free from Falkirk. Doesn't get many assists but was second in the league in key passes. Ian Hall was our biggest signing last season and provided the engine in our midfield. Youth Intake We actually got a player I'm excited about this year, GK Mark McShane. He's going to be our 3rd stringer this year I'm hopeful he can eventually at least claim the backup spot. Finances We seem to be doing ok financially still, at least the board is happy and keeps dumping money in the team. They won't invest in facilities at all yet though. Around the world Celtic continues to dominate Scotland, but it's not total domination. Dundee has managed 3 league titles. But Celtic won this season with 101 points, +52 GD and 27 clear of Dundee. But Celtic's best showing the Champions League has been a 3rd place group finish. And they've been to the Europa League quarter final twice. The Scotland National Team hasn't accomplished much, no World Cup appearances and a 4th place group stage in 2020 in the European Championship. They did finish 2nd in their group in the World Cup qualifiers this year behind Spain and ahead of Russia, Belarus and Armenia, but not good enough to be a top 3 second place team. The most fascinating thing I'm seeing in my world right now is the emergence of West Ham as a power. They've been solid in the PL for quite awhile, never finishing below 7th since 17/18. Then the past 2 seasons they finished 3rd. This season though, they won the PL in very convincing fashion, with 98 points, 13 clear of Chelsea. Only 2 losses all year in the league. They won their Champions League group over Real Madrid but the fell to RB Leipzig in the knockout stages. Prior to that, Chelsea and Man City had been sharing the league titles since 21/22, Man Utd won in 17/18, 18/19 and 20/21 (Liverpool won in 19/20). One other notable team in the PL, Preston North End finished 8th this season and seem firmly established as a midtable team. PSG has won in France 8 of the last 9 seasons with only Monaco managing to challenge them. This season was actually first time in 5 that Bayern won Germany, Red Bulls had taken the previous 4 trophies. And Leverkusen snuck in a win back in 21/22. Real Madrid has won La Liga 9 seasons running while Barcelona and Atletico Madrid keep fighting for 2nd. Real Madrid ended up winning the Champions League over PSG 4-1. That's Real Madrid's 3rd CL trophy in a row and 6th in 10 seasons. PSG won the 2 before this run as well as another, Monaco, Liverpool and Bayern also won 1 each. England won the World Cups in 2018 and 2022, Argentina won it in 2026 and Italy is hosting it this summer. Spain won the European Championship in 2020, Croatia shocked Europe with a win in 2024 and Italy won in 2028 after consecutive runner up finishes. Looking ahead Hoping to find a left fullback who can provide a bit more offense for us next season, need to find a right midfielder that can do that as well. Maybe a centerback upgrade. And some depth as I'm weeding out some of the players who moved into backup roles. Our 4-4-1-1 is working pretty well, think we're going to try transitioning to playing my central midfielders in the defensive midfield and use Hall as a Segundo Volante. No question I will be around for FM19...am doing some test play in the BETA, but really finding a struggle at the start in Spain as the team has already resigned all their players before I start (July 10th Restart), which means I have no budget to fix the holes in the team I selected (No left back, and only youth Left wingers) Hoping that the team will at least survive the relegation battle to make it to a new season. We finished 2nd but were promoted following the playoffs in what is frankly an incomprehensible promotion/relegation system in Belgian. We topped the playoff table comfortably which always looked on the cards after an away victory in the first playoff game over Molenbeek who finished top of the table in the regular season. We will be the only semi-pro team in the second tier next season which will make life difficult. Mid-table will be a great achievement. Key Players William Owusu – Signed due to injury to fellow striker Mombongo but finished top scorer with 19 goals. Georgi Beridze – Young Georgian winger deployed as a left wing back did very well. The Belgian league structure frankly, is crazy. The season in the second tier is divided in two. The winner of each half meet in a playoff for a single promotion spot and others playoff with top flight sides for a Europa League spot. We finished 2nd in the first half and 3rd in the second (second overall) therefore failing to qualify for the champions playoff. Exciting news is that the board first asked me if we wanted to turn professional.. yes please. This was due to take until the end of next season but at the end of the season they turned us professional anyway. Financially we are 500k in the red, promotion should sort that out if we can manage it this season. Key Players Maximiliano Caufriez – 22 year old Belgian defender signer from Liege on a free last summer. Patrick Rakovsky – Czech keeper picked up on a free from Lierse after spells in the Bundesliga with Nurnberg and Schalke. Andrew Haines Posted February 10, 2019 Share Posted February 10, 2019 RFC Liege Proxima League– 2020/21 – 3rd Squad Transfers Overview Having lost out on a champions playoff spot twice last season having finished 2nd in both the opening and closing phases a strong finish to the first phase this season put us in a playoff with Lierse. We were outmatched but acquitted ourselves well and went down to a 4-3 aggregate defeat. It took Lierse a late 84th minute goal to finish the job. The aim for next season has to be promotion. Money is a problem, at time of writing we are 1.7mill in debt. We have some saleable assets including 18 year old Australian keeper Robert Wilson who is attracting attention from PSG. If I play my cards right I might be able to bring in enough to clear our deficit. The striker position is problematic. Wrzesniak came in for the second half of the season on loan and was impressive but I won’t have him for next season. I may need to look at loan signings to plug the gap. Key Players Paolo Sabak – Signed from KRC Genk on a free transfer to fill the trequista role I was struggling to fill. Jakub Wrzesniak – Polish striker signed on loan from Heerenveen. Added pace, goals and assists in the second half of the season. Attempts to convert wingers to the front line to take advantage of pace failed. Only the signings of two Brazilian strikers in January turned this around. Gabriel Novaes scored 10 goals in 14 games and Kaue 5 from a deeper lying role. On a positive note, my last update was that we sat in significant debt, 2 million at the beginning of this season. This debt was all but eradicated in pre-season. Sales of key players probably contributed to the poor season but Bossaerts (230k), Khammas (325k), Kenne (235k), Wilson (850k), Okoro (350k) and Ekwalla (225k) departed netting the £2 mill I needed to clear our debt. Wilson was the only sale I was truly upset by as he was a very promising 18 year old keeper, the 850k PSG paid couldn’t be ignored however. Key Players Gabriel Novaes – A disastrous season was turned around by the arrival of Brazilian strikers Novaes and Kaue in January. Navaes added 10 goals. Jesus Rodriguez – 20 year old Argentine midfielder looks a promising addition. One of a number of signings from his nation. We were dominant in the opening season and comfortably qualified for the champions playoff. The second half we fell to pieces however. We had done enough in the first half that ultimately we finished top of the overall table but this means nothing as the promoted side is decided by a playoff between the winners of the first and second halves of the season. Despite form improving in the final few games of the season, Roeselare turned us over 2-0 home and away. We did put in a spirited performance in the European playoff (played between the teams at bottom of Juliper League and top of Proxima League for a Europa League spot). We came very close to qualifying for the final of the playoff, only a draw it KC Mechelen in the final game cost us. Financially we look reasonably solid now. We lose a million every season but player sales are offsetting this. Promotion has to be the objective next season. Key Players Anaxis Dinsifwa – Young Belgian on loan from Standard. Was most effective as a right wingback but turned out in a number of roles. Joaquin Ruiz – One of eight Argentinians in the first team squad. Scored 21 goals in 40 games.
