Burton Albion - October 2020/21

BurtonAlbion_zps04dfd262.png

Burton Albion

03.10.20 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Carlisle United : 1-1 : October kicked things off for us with a visit from Carlisle United in a game which saw late goals as an own goal from Christopher Chantler 6 minutes from time looked as if it would be enough to hand us all 3 points. We couldn’t hold on though as with just 2 minutes remaining Jimmy Pemberton grabbed an equalizer for the away side to give us another draw as we’re fast becoming renowned for draw specialists.

06.10.20 - Johnstone’s Paint Trophy North 2nd Round - Barnsley v Burton Albion : 1-1 (5-4 pens) : Our reward for disposing of Oldham on penalties in the last round was an away trip to Oakwell and after 8 minutes it looked as if our passage to the 3rd round was on as Morvin Adams struck his 3rd goal of the season. Once again though, our failure to see out games cost us as Barnsley grabbed an equalizer 7 minutes from time to send the game to extra time and then penalties. Having won 5-4 on penalties in the last round, this round saw us lose 5-4 as The Tykes held their nerve to put themselves into the next round.

10.10.20 - Npower League Two - Bristol Rovers v Burton Albion : 0-0 : Not a lot happened in this game as both sides created very little so it was no surprise that the game ended 0-0.

17.10.20 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Milton Keynes Dons : 1-1 : You could almost predict what is going to happen in our games now as we took an early lead through Morvin Adams before failing to hang on as the away side snatched an injury time equalizer to give us another draw!

20.10.20 - Npower League Two - Wycombe Wanderers v Burton Albion : 0-0 : Another goalless draw for us but I didn’t mind in this game as a point against a strong Wycombe side who are going well in the league is something I’d of taken before kick off.

24.10.20 - Npower League Two - Tranmere Rovers v Burton Albion : 1-0 : We looked to be heading for another draw until that is 3 minutes from time when once again we switched off and conceded right at the end as Ty Broom netted Tranmere’s winner. With the season in full swing now, conceding late goals is something we definitely need to stamp out as it’s costing us dearly.

31.10.20 - FA Cup 1st Round - Burton Albion v Beaconsfield SYCOB : 5-2 : A very favourable home draw against Southern Premier League side Beaconsfield saw us cruise into the 2nd round as a hat trick from Billy Kee, one from John McLaughlin and an own goal gave us an easy win.

October League Table : October saw us fail to win a single league game as we drew 4 and lost 1 as we slip down the table to 9th. Things could’ve been so different for us if we had stopped conceding late goals, costing us valuable points but as it happens our slight dip in form still leaves us within touching distance of the play-offs. As for the cups, we’re out of the Johnstone’s Paint Pot Cup after Barnsley defeated us on penalties leaving us with just one cup to play in now as we’re through to the 2nd round of the FA Cup after beating Beaconsfield.

Shame you left Grange Park, but great progress at the Brewers.

Thanks withnail. I think I took Long Eaton as far as I could so when Burton came calling, I had to take it.

Burton Albion - November 2020/21

BurtonAlbion_zps04dfd262.png

Burton Albion

03.11.20 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Rotherham United : 2-0 : September started well for us as debut goals for the club from both new signings Simon Gemmell and Jack Payne gave us a 2-0 win in a game which saw us totally outplayed.

07.11.20 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Walsall : 1-1 : After Jared Belford put the visitors 1-0 up 4 minutes before half time, I feared the worse as we didn’t play at all well. But, we dug in deep and grabbed an equalizer as Morvin Adams rescued a point for us 12 minutes from time.

10.11.20 - Npower League Two - Mansfield Town v Burton Albion : 1-1 : If you’d of offered me a point before kick-off (another draw I know!) I’d of taken it as Mansfield were a side in form and one of the title favourites after their relegation from League One last season. So when Marcus Holness struck an equalizing goal for us on 24 minutes after Charlie Khatib had put The Stags in front I was delighted as we were lucky to get a point out of the game considering how dominant Mansfield were.

14.11.20 - Npower League Two - Gillingham v Burton Albion : 0-3 : We made the journey to the Priestfield knowing that Gillingham were struggling so it was a chance to jump into a play-off place if we beat them. An early Blair Davidson goal on 4 minutes set us on our way before Simon Gemmell and David Thornley completed the scoring for us as we took what proved to be an easy 3 points.

17.11.20 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Fleetwood Town : 2-1 : Things didn’t start well for us as George Baker put the visitors 1-0 up on 20 minutes after a fine 20 yard strike but their lead didn’t last long as Simon Gemmell replied just 2 minutes later to put us back on level terms. In game which saw us completely dominate, we finally turned the tables and grabbed a late winner ourselves rather than conceding a late winner as Morvin Adams struck his 6th goal of the season to give us all 3 points.

21.11.20 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Shrewsbury Town : 1-2 : Our recent 5 game unbeaten run came to a shuddering end in this game thanks to some appalling referee decisions. An unbelievable decision to award Shrewsbury a penalty on 18 minutes gave the Shrews the chance to take the lead which they did so as Luke Waters converted the penalty. This decision changed the game as it clearly riled our players who felt aggrieved at the decision but we maintained our professionalism and snatched an equalizer 8 minutes after the restart to put right what the officials got wrong. As we got back into the game though and looked as if we might, ourselves grab a winner, the referee and his linesmen gave another outrageous decision as they once again awarded an extremely dubious penalty 3 minutes from time in which Luke Waters slotted home the resulting spot kick to leave us angry and frustrated and with a point snatched from our grasp! Shocking officials which all I can do about is complain to the press about and have the FA “remain silent” about!

28.11.20 - FA Cup 2nd Round - Dartford v Burton Albion : 1-3 : A victory against Blue Square Premier side Dartford which puts us into the 3rd round of the FA Cup went a long way in helping us to calm down about the Shrewsbury game a week after it happened as goals from Stuart Urquhart, Billy Kee and Sunay Tasdemir were enough to give us the victory. You could still see the players and myself were still angry about the Shrewsbury game though as nothing was done about clearly ‘ripping us off’.

November League Table : 3 wins, 2 draws and a loss (did I mention that we were ripped off with that loss ;)) puts us back into a play-off place on goal difference with half of the season almost gone. While promotion was never on the cards for us this season, I won’t complain if we can maintain a place in the play-offs come the end of the season :). With league results going better for us this month, cup results did too as we disposed of Dartford in the 2nd round of the FA Cup which puts us in the 3rd round where we’ll meet Championship side Stevenage in January.

No unbeaten season again :D.

I was surprised I got one last season!

Stupid silent FA... Speak up!

Tell me about it! So annoying!

Looks like a close playoff fight.

At the minute :D. I'm not expecting a play-off push this season though considering we're new to the division.

Hopefully you can turn the draws into victories otherwise that may come back to cost you!

It would be nice to but I suppose draws are better than losses :D

Burton Albion - December 2020/21

BurtonAlbion_zps04dfd262.png

Burton Albion

01.12.20 - Npower League Two - Luton Town v Burton Albion : 1-0 : We started the festive season off with a trip to Kenilworth Road against 2nd place Luton Town and our defensive vulnerabilities once again shone through as we conceded 3 minutes from time as Eddie Oshodi hit Luton’s winner.

05.12.20 - Npower League Two - Portsmouth v Burton Albion : 2-0 : A 2nd defeat in a row for us as Portsmouth deserved the win as we failed to threaten the Pompey goal for much of the match so I can’t have any complaints.

12.12.20 - Npower League Two - Barnet v Burton Albion : 1-1 : Billy Kee’s 10th goal of the season 2 minutes before the break was enough to give us a share of the spoils as we ended our run of defeats yet still look for a victory in 4 league games.

19.12.20 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Hereford United : 2-0 : I was beginning to think that game against Shrewsbury had more significance than I thought as we’ve not won a league game since but a goal from John McLaughlin and an own goal from Kirtys MacKenzie gave us the points to give us a 1st league victory in just under a month.

22.12.20 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Sunderland : 1-1 : Our previous meeting earlier in the season saw us and Sunderland share the points and this game was no different as David Thornley grabbed a late equalizer for us after Micah Taylor had put the Black Cats ahead to give us a share of the points once again.

26.12.20 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Eastleigh : 2-0 : Boxing Day saw us welcome Easleigh to the Pirelli Stadium in a game which saw us dominate and win deservedly thanks to goals from Time Seatter, his 1st of the season and Morvin Adams’ 8th goal of the season.

28.12.20 - Npower League Two - Scunthorpe United v Burton Albion : 1-2 : We finished the year off with a trip to Glanford Park as we faced Scunthorpe United. An early goal and a late goal (something we’re improving on now) was enough to hand us the victory and finish the year with style as we end the month and year hovering just outside the play-offs.

December League Table : We started the month off badly as we lost our first 2 games but we turned things around as December went on as 3 wins and 2 draws was enough to leave us sitting 9th in the table and just outside of a play-off place. With 17 games remaining and a healthy points total so far and without wanting to take our foot off the pedal so to speak, relegation should not even be a worry now with a play-off place all the more of a reasonable aim for us.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about relegation anymore. You're in a strong position.
Could easily creep into the playoffs. Keep it going
It's a very close race for a playoff spot.

Cheers fellas. If we can keep up our current form I reckon we could actually sneak a play-off place :D

Burton Albion - January 2020/21

BurtonAlbion_zps04dfd262.png

Burton Albion

02.01.21 - FA Cup 3rd Round - Burton Albion v Stevenage : 3-0 : We went into this 3rd round tie against Championship side Stevenage as heavy underdogs even though we had home advantage. Not many people were expecting us to come away with anything, including myself so when Billy Kee had put us 2-0 up after 18 minutes, we had to pinch ourselves! Stevenage offered very little threat to our goal and Ross Caldwell completed a great win for us by netting a 3rd 2 minutes into stoppage time to put us into the 4th round :).

06.01.21 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Oldham Athletic : 2-0 : Sunay Tasdemir opened the scoring for us on 23 minutes before Blair Davidson wrapped up the points for us in the 90th minute as we ran out comfortable 2-0 winners.

09.01.21 - Npower League Two - York City v Burton Albion : 2-1 : As usual, just when you think things are going well and nothing can stop you, something or someone comes along to halt it…and that someone was York City as a Gareth Evans goal and a Simon Gemmell own goal put an end to our recent 4 game unbeaten run.

16.01.21 - Npower League Two - Lincoln City v Burton Albion : 0-2 : A 5 minute brace from Morvin Adams put us back to winning ways although it came at a price as Billy Kee, David Thornley and Sunay Tasdemir all picked up injuries…luckily, they’re not long term injuries.

20.01.21 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Kidderminster Harriers : 1-1 : We looked to be heading for another 3 points after Morvin Adams hit his 11th goal of the season but our defensive frailties once again raised their ugly head as we conceded an equalizer 8 minutes from time to leave us having to share the points.

23.01.21 - FA Cup 4th Round - Burton Albion v Blackpool : 0-0 : We were always going to be massive underdogs in this game so I set us up very defensively and in the end it proved to be the right thing to do as despite Blackpool peppering our goal with shot after shot and completely dominating possession throughout the 90 minutes, we managed to hang on and force the game to a replay.

30.01.21 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Cambridge United : 3-0 : We finished the month off in fine style as a brace from Blair Davidson and a single goal from Morvin Adams gave us a good win which should of in truth been more.

January League Table : 3 league wins, a draw and a loss proved to be enough to put us back into a play-off place as we start to hit the business end of the season. We also had a good win against Stevenage in the FA Cup 3rd round which saw us paired with Blackpool in the 4th round in which we forced them to a replay which we’ll play out next month.

Burton Albion - February 2020/21

BurtonAlbion_zps04dfd262.png

Burton Albion

02.02.21 - FA Cup 4th Round replay - Blackpool v Burton Albion : 2-1 : Having somehow scraped a 0-0 against Blackpool just over a week ago, we were obviously massive, massive underdogs to get anything from this game so when Scott Wagstaff put the Seasiders ahead after 14 minutes, it came as no real surprise. What did come as a surprise though was Blair Davidson’s equalizer 9 minutes later and the fight that we put up throughout the entirety of the match. It wasn’t meant to be though as Blackpool grabbed a deserved winner a minute from time through Jordan Obita to end our journey in this years FA Cup.

06.02.21 - Npower League Two - Carlisle United v Burton Albion : 2-0 : Having played our FA Cup 4th round replay just 4 days earlier, we were clearly suffering from a hangover as we looked tired and leggy and Carlisle took full advantage of that fact to go on and win 2-0.

23.02.21 - Npower League Two - Milton Keynes Dons v Burton Albion : 2-3 : Having had a 2 and a half week break since our last game, we were refreshed and ready to go as despite MK Dons taking the lead twice, we responded magnificently to pull back and bag an eventual winner 4 minutes from time.

27.02.21 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Bristol Rovers : 1-2 : We ended the month how we started it as a Victor Anichebe brace inflicted our 3 defeat of the month on us to leave us clinging onto a play-off place.

February League Table : Not a great month for us as 3 defeats (one in the FA Cup and two in the league) leaves us out of all cup competitions now and clinging on to a play-off place with just 9 games remaining.

Burton Albion - March 2020/21

BurtonAlbion_zps04dfd262.png

Burton Albion

06.03.21 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Wycombe Wanderers : 1-0 : A superb victory thanks to Blair Davidson’s 11th goal of the season against fellow promotion hopefuls Wycombe gave us a valuable 3 points as we further strengthened our aim for a final play-off push.

09.03.21 - Npower League Two - Rotherham United v Burton Albion : 0-2 : We left it late but 2 goals in the last 5 minutes from David Thornley and Sunay Tasdemir gave us another great win against another of our play-off rivals Rotherham.

13.03.21 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Tranmere Rovers : 2-0 : A nice game for us as we hosted struggling Tranmere who can’t buy a win at the minute so it was no surprise that we won the game easily.

27.03.21 - Npower League Two - Walsall v Burton Albion : 0-1 : Things seem to be going right for us at the right time now as Walsall missed a penalty in this game while our winner came from a Walsall own goal :).

March League Table : I couldn’t of asked for a better month as we won 4 out of 4 with 2 of those wins coming against promotion rivals which puts us firmly into a play-off place with just 5 games left.

Automatic promotion will require a bit of help ;) but you're looking strong right now.

Thanks cerud. I was hoping Wycombe would slip up...and they did...unfortunately, so did we :(

Burton Albion - April 2020/21

BurtonAlbion_zps04dfd262.png

Burton Albion

03.04.21 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Mansfield Town : 1-2 : A close affair against a strong Mansfield side saw us take the lead on the half hour mark thanks to Billy Kee’s 13th goal of the season. But Mansfield showed why they’re challenging for the title as they came back strong and grabbed 2 goals either side of half time to take the points.

05.04.21 - Npower League Two - Fleetwood Town v Burton Albion : 1-0 : A strange game for us as on paper we were the favourites but we failed to turn up as Fleetwood won 1-0 which in all honesty, should’ve been more.

10.04.21 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Gillingham : 4-0 : Having stuttered slightly in the past couple of games, we were back to our best as goals from Morvin Adams, Simon Gemmell, David Thornley and Ross Caldwell ensured a proper a routing for The Gills.

17.04.21 - Npower League Two - Shrewsbury Town v Burton Albion : 0-1 : A late goal from Billy Kee gave us all 3 points and ensured that our last game of the season against Luton and a chance of promotion would go right down to the wire.

24.04.21 - Npower League Two - Burton Albion v Luton Town : 3-0 : Our last game of the season saw us still have a possibility of snatching the 3rd and final automatic promotion spot providing of course we beat Luton (who themselves were playing for the title) and York City lost. Both sides started tentatively but as the game went on it was Luton’s nerves that showed more as once we broke the dead lock through John McLaughlin, the goals flew in as we got 2 more thanks to Blair Davidson and Ross Caldwell as we claimed a great win…York City however won meaning that it was them that claimed the final automatic spot leaving us to fight it out in the play-offs.

April League Table : The month didn’t start great for us as we lost to both Mansfield and Fleetwood but the 3 wins that followed ensured that we’d be participating in the League Two play-offs this season, having only just narrowly missed out on an automatic promotion place.

Now it’s the lottery of the play-offs!

Good luck! Although you will need to beat the mighty Eastleigh! :D

Funny you should say that...I seem to remember you saying that a couple of seasons ago and we lost...

You did well to reach the play-offs. Best of luck in them.

I think we did too so I've gotta be happy

Burton Albion - NPower League Two Play-offs 2020/21

BurtonAlbion_zps04dfd262.png

Burton Albion

01.05.21 - Npower League Two Play-off Semi Final 1st leg - Eastleigh v Burton Albion : 1-0 : We were drawn with Eastleigh in the Semi Final of this seasons play-offs who 2 years ago denied us a place in League Two as they defeated us 2-1 in extra time in the Blue Square Premier Play-Off Final. We failed to show up…it’s as simple as that! All of the hard work we’ve put in so far this year saw us struggle to threaten Eastleigh’s goal and it was left to Lee Erwin to give the home side the advantage going into the 2nd leg.

05.05.21 - Npower League Two Play-off Semi Final 2nd leg - Burton Albion v Eastleigh : 0-0 : We gave a better account of ourselves than we did in the 1st leg but we could break the deadlock in this game as our 1st leg performance cost us as Eastleigh went through to the final after winning the tie 1-0 on aggregate…another season in League Two for us.

Ouch, looks like too many draws cost you an automatic spot.Unlucky with the playoff loss, hopefully you can come back stronger next season.

As usual. While we're proving difficult to beat we just can't seem to turn those draws into wins.

Yeah :cool::D.

Shush you! ;)

Burton Albion - Season Review 2020/21

BurtonAlbion_zps04dfd262.png

Burton Albion

Npower League Two/Npower League Two progress : Given our pre-season predictions and expectations of a mid-table finish, to finish in the play-offs and only just narrowly miss out on automatic promotion is a great achievement for us this season.

FA Cup : A good campaign for us as we reached the 4th round only to be knocked out by Championship side Blackpool after a replay.

League Cup : After a couple of seasons away from the League Cup, our season back in it this year was more than respectable as we reached the 3rd round before Championship side Hartlepool sent us packing.

Johnstone’s Paint Trophy : Out on penalties to Barnsley in the 2nd round. It’s only the Paint Pot Cup though so I wasn’t that bothered.

Transfers : Nearly all of our transfer activity happened during pre-season which I touched upon in the pre-season report. Usually you get a few players that settle well/don’t settle well but this season saw all of our transfer dealings settle in well with Simon Gemmell, Daniel Cleary and Jack Payne particularly impressing.

Squad : The squad of players made adjusting from life in the Blue Square Premier to life in Npower League Two look fairly easy as we almost clinched a 2nd successive promotion only to lose out in the play-off semi finals. What made it even more impressive is the fact that our strikers weren’t that prolific yet still shared the goals between them and the defence managed to conceded the fewest amount of goals in the division. As for strengthening for next season…well from the look of this season we shouldn’t have to improve that much.

Finances : Another loss this season as we creep closer to a million pound in debt.

My views of the season… : Another great season for us as we made easy work of adapting to a higher division. Promotion was a possibility but I suppose we’re not ready yet. Maybe next season or the season after?

My aims for next season… : Like I mentioned above, promotion could be a possibility next season but we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves. I think in the long run, missing out on promotion this season could prove to be a good thing for us as it gives us a real good building block for next season. I think we could do with just a couple of new additions next season and we could take the next step.

Former club watch

Long Eaton United : Just scraped survival as they finished 20th in the Blue Square Premier, avoiding relegation by 1 point. They also sacked their manager Billy Burgess (who took over from me) in February this season and appointed Shane Hill as the new boss.

Sorry 'bout that.

Mighty, mighty Eastleigh on the rampage! :D

No you're not ;):D Eastleigh in League One...who'd of thought it?! ;)

Great first season in League 2. Should soon be up again.

Hopefully.

Quality first season. Tough not to finish in the playoffs, but you know you have a club than can compete.

With a couple more additions, I think so...

...but there's been a development...

You've had a good spell with Burton, but I'd accept the offer.
You did well with Burton but Leeds would be a good step up if you decide to accept.

I have to side with you both...

Leeds are a dirty football club and you'd do well to avoid them.

...but not with you CityAndColour ;). I know they're a dirty club (dirty, dirty Leeds) but the offer is too good to turn down. Besides, the only club I couldn't take over on FM would be the ultimate horrible, disgusting club that is Derby ;).

Leeds United : A background

Founded in 1919, Leeds United are a professional English Football Club currently playing in the Npower League Two. The club play their home games at Elland Road and possess top training facilities and average youth facilities. The club’s training ground is Thorp Arch. The Leeds United reserve team play at Thorp Arch. The club also has above average junior coaching and an above average youth recruitment network. The club is affectionately known as United and retains a fierce rivalry with Manchester United, Galatasaray and Chelsea.

The club enjoyed probably their best spell of success during the 1970’s. Although now enduring a twenty-nine year barren spell, having not won a competition since 1992, United still have a history of which they can be justly proud. Leeds United finished runners-up in the Champions League in 1975, won the English top division in 1969, 1974 and 1992 and are five-time runners-up, finished runners-up in the European Cup Winners Cup in 1973, and won the Europa League in 1968 and 1971 and finished runners-up once.

Over the past 9 seasons since this save has begun, Leeds United have been playing in the Championship for 7 years, League One for 2 years and have recently been relegated to League Two.

Leeds United

League expectation

-------------------------

Npower League Two : Board expectation - Win promotion : Media expectation - 3rd (out of 24)

Cup expectations

---------------------

FA Cup : 3rd round

League Cup : 2nd round

Johnstone’s Paint Trophy : Not important

Transfer budget : £415k

Wage budget : £36.5k p/w

Current wage bill : £34.7k p/w

Season tickets sold : 9832 (-894 from last season)

My views for the season ahead… : Having joined Leeds who have fallen from grace and were relegated from League One last season, the aim from both the board and myself this season is to immediately bounce back. Given the stature of the club and the quality within the squad, I feel that this is more than achievable and anything less will be viewed as failure, by all. As I said, the squad is full of quality for this level so I felt only a few additions were needed for us. So, in come Chris Basham and Jimmy Mooney on free transfers, Jack Harper for a bargain £5k from Real Madrid “C” and John Flanagan from Nottingham Forest, Grant Collins from Arsenal, Tom Heardman from Newcastle United and David Thornley from Blackburn Rovers all on season long loans.

While the squad was already full of quality, it was also full of dead wood who were bleeding the club dry through wages so out the door has seen no less than 27 players leave, leaving the squad with 22 professional players.

Leeds have fallen to League 2? I guess it's time to bring the former giants back up!

There's a few teams that have fallen from grace over the past few years, Sunderland, Leicester, Portsmouth are all in League Two along with Leeds of course.

How dare you. I am upset now :D.

Infact, I know why you've done it :D. To relegate them even more :D.

If it was Derby then yes...although I'm not sure I could actual take over them...in fact I am sure...I couldn't! :D

Leeds United - July 2021/22

Leeds United

Leeds_zpsb6964f60.png

Leeds United

21.07.21 - Friendly - Leeds United v Tottenham Hotspur : 2-2 : We started our pre-season off against our parent club Spurs who fielded a few of their first team players but the majority of their match squad were reserve players. The result was never important for us as it was all about fitness for us but despite resisting shot after shot from a young but decent Spurs team, we managed to claim a draw at full-time.

28.07.21 - Friendly - Leeds United v AS St-Etienne Reserves : 1-0 : Our next pre-season game was our first of 3 against French Ligue 1 reserve teams as St-Etienne Reserves made the trip across the channel. Again, it wasn’t about the result, just fitness so it was good to give everyone a run out…and also nice to get a 1-0 win.

31.07.21 - Friendly - Leeds United v AS LOSC Lille Reserves : 1-0 : Lille Reserves were next up for us as a solitary goal from our highly rated youngster Stephen Elliot (who has come through our youth system) was enough to give us a 1-0 win.

04.08.21 - Friendly - Leeds United v AS Nancy Lorraine Reserves : 1-1 : Our final pre-season game saw us host Nancy Lorraine Reserves and within 2 minutes we were 1-0 down after Lynel Kitambal converted a penalty. We came back well though and found an equalizer 2 minutes before the break through the on loan David Thornley who I had at Burton last season.

10.08.21 - League Cup 1st Round - Leeds United v Blackpool : 0-0 (4-3 pens) : How we won this game I’ll never know as we endured an onslaught from Championship side Blackpool to cling on and win the game on penalties to progress to the next round of the League Cup.

14.08.21 - Npower League Two - Leeds United v Shrewsbury Town : 1-1 : My first competitive league game in charge at Leeds saw us welcome Shrewsbury Town to Elland Road and just before the half hour mark, on loan signing Grant Collins put us in to the lead with a rasping 20 yard strike. We couldn’t hold on though as 9 minutes from time, Shrewsbury grabbed an equalizer to deny me my first win at my new club.

17.08.21 - Npower League Two - Kidderminster Harriers v Leeds United : 0-0 : A game of stalemate as both sides created a few opportunities but none that warranted a break in the dead lock as we had to settle for a point, leaving me still waiting for a first win as Leeds boss.

21.08.21 - Npower League Two - Leeds United v Southport : 2-1 : We took the lead in this game just before the half hour mark through loan signing David Thornley but within 2 minutes Southport had pegged us back. From there, it did look as if we’d have to settle for another point and I’d still have to wait for my first victory, but 17 year old Nathan Morrell popped up a minute into injury time to hand us all 3 points and me my first win as Leeds boss :).

24.08.21 - League Cup 2nd Round - Leeds United v Sheffield Wednesday : 0-1 : No sooner had my first win as boss came, my first defeat as boss came as Sheffield Wednesday sent us packing in the 2nd round of the League Cup. I wasn’t too disappointed though as the 2nd round was all that was expected of us and Sheffield Wednesday have just been relegated from the Premier League so they’re a strong side.

28.08.21 - Npower League Two - Leeds United v Scunthorpe United : 3-0 : We romped home as 3-0 winners thanks to Jack Harper opening his Leeds scoring record with a brace and another new boy, Jimmy Mooney getting in on the goal scoring action.

31.08.21 - Johnstone’s Paint Trophy North 1st Round - York City v Leeds United : 2-1 : We ended the month with defeat in the Paint Pot Cup as York City struck a late winner 5 minutes from time to send us out of the competition. It wasn’t too bad though as the board weren’t too bothered about the competition…and neither was I really.

August League Table : A good start to life at Elland Road for me as 2 wins and 2 draws leaves us sitting 4th at the end of the month. While our league performances have been pleasing though our cup performances haven’t been so pleasing as already we’re out of both the League Cup and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. Still, I shouldn’t really complain as in both cups it was higher division opponents who knocked us out plus it gives us a chance to “concentrate on the league now”, to quote an old cliché.

Also, with the transfer window soon closing, I managed to bring in another player this month to help bolster our thin squad as highly rated youngster Matt McKay, who at just 17 years old already has a Northern Ireland International cap, joins us for £325k from Linfield.
