New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Hi all,

I have purchased every version of FM since the Amiga days, unfortunately the last few years I have struggled to get into FM but this year I wanna go big and have a good career over the cold winter months.

The plan has hit a problem my ageing Macbook is dying, the screen unless at certain angles turns itself off so its time to invest! I appreciate that Mac's are very good, but for £750 minimum I don't use the features enough to justify a new one, all I want to do is play FM and browse the internet, nothing more.

The one small snag is that I travel alot and would like a really light laptop no bigger than around 13" but everything I read states that to get the best out of FM I will need a very good graphics card and processor but not so much reliance on memory.

I called into PC World after work today and was told that I will struggle to get a light laptop that has the power to run FM, i am always dubious re computer stores so wanted to check with you guys.

If anyone could recommend something I would be very much appreciative!!

Hi guys

I'm in the market for a new MacBook Pro. Currently playing FM14 on my 2010 13" MBP (2.4GHz C2D with Nvidia GeForce 320M 256 MB graphics) and to be honest the game runs pretty poor (I'm not complaining i know the internals are old as hell in this machine) Currently get about 0.5 * on 3D match engine and game performance.

So I'm planning on getting a Retina MacBook Pro 13" (2.4 or 2.6 GHz i5 & Intel Iris graphics) and was thinking of getting it in time for the launch of FM15. Obviously I know we don't know how things will be on 15, but does anyone have experience playing FM14 on an rMPB? I've seen some criticism of Iris graphics, but that's mainly from people trying to play more graphically taxing games than FM.

So in short, what sort of game/graphics performance can I expect from this machine if i pull the trigger any buy it?

I've been playing around with PC Specialist, and currently have the following key aspects:

Intel Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-4710MQ (2.50 GHZ) 6MB

8GB RAM (DDR3)

Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M 2GB

1TB Hard Drive (5,400 rpm)

That comes to £827 so I can afford one more upgrade. Would you recommend:

a - bumping the processor up to be a 2.8GHZ

b - upgrading to 16GB RAM

c - switching out the 1TB hard drive for a 500GB one and then adding a 240GB Solid State Drive to put the OS and a handful of games on.

There's not an option to improve the graphics card, but unless I've made a big misunderstanding that should be more than good enough for FM, right?

From the advice I've read on this thread, at the moment I'm feeling slightly torn between b and c. c sounds like it would be better for FM, but b might make the overall build more future proof. That said, RAM is easier to add later? Does it work ok to have two hard drives side by side like that (I know that's probably a stupid question, but I'm not a super technical person!)

Id go for c, the CPU and Ram should be sufficient for a long time unless you do heavy editing/video work I think. SSD is always a nice for OS and fast loading in games

slightly lesser graphics card and no backlit keyboard but more ram and bigger screen and both have a better Hard drive

Hi Eugene,

Preferably £500-600, tbh all I will do is play FM and use the internet, have an iPad for watching movies etc.

Ideal I would like it to be light as I travel alot.

In terms of FM I don't load huge amounts of leagues but would like to watch the games in the best possible way.

Thanks Eugene, my current Macbook is 2.3kg, its a shocker on hand luggage only flights lol, I was hoping for a 13" lighter laptop, I am beginning to think that my only choice is a Macbook Air but they are so expensive to just play FM and use the internet. Plus Macbook Air's start at £749 for 11' inch, £849 for 13" and then I would probably need more RAM in them? so I will be looking at £1000 just to have a light laptop to play FM and use the net, shocker!

I have tried FM on my iPad but to someone thats played FM years and years its really not the same!

Thanks Chris, honestly all I will run is Prem - Conference, large database though, season with Forest and then I would want to watch the game in the best possible way.

Integrated is fine, I have a Core I5 3230m/HD 4000 and I run at medium settings with everything on, of course as always it all depends on what resolution your running as-well.

Newer IvyBridge CPU's will have better iGPU so will handle it a bit better, AMD on the other hand have much better iGPU than Intel but suffer a lot in terms of CPU grunt compared to Intel cpu's.

Another option is to wait until Intel Core M powered devices hit the mainstream.

What about this one? would play FM fine with a few leagues loaded, 3d match id say on medium settings plus its half a Kg lighter than your average laptop and has touchscreen to aswell.

Yep, virtually the same as the one I linked above except for John Lewis seem to selling at a slightly higher spec with double the RAM plus an 8GB SSD cache drive, the on board GPU will be fine for medium settings in the 3D match engine.

excellent, finally my have found my machine, part of me thinks for £600 I should pay that little bit more for another Macbook but I can't justify it with just going on the web and playing FM.

Just concerned if its strong enough graphically, the processor and RAM seem ok and its LIGHT!

Get the one Eugene recomended as you get more for your money, twice the RAM and twice the storage, GPU same on both, CPU is slightly better in the other laptop but the difference is only a few %.

For the record, never ever use CPU Boss to compare anything as its totally useless.

Hi am just wondering if you can tell me whats better a ATI Radeon 7480D/ATI Radeon 9800 ? i assumed it would be the 9800 but am reading the 7480D is newer ? Can someone help explain which one is better please and why ? thank you

Newer isn't always better - the 9800 is better, but it's energy zapping.

Does anyone have the FX 8320 or FX 6300 in there build on this post?

The 8320 is miles better.
