New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Ended up going with this -

MSI GE60

Intel i7 4700MQ (4th Gen) processor with up to 3.4GHZ turbo boost.

8GB RAM

128GB SSD

750GB Sata 7200RPM HDD

DVD-RW drive

NVidia 765M GTX with 2GB RAM

Windows 8.1

15.6" full HD 1920x1080 anti-glare LCD

Steelseries keyboard with backlit display

Decent buy for £590? Reckon it'll be able to run 100k players for 10 or so seasons without much slow down? Other than knowing I wanted an SSD and at least 8GB ram I'm clueless when it comes to computers. Just used benchmark sites to judge the CPU/GPUs.

Should be here tomorrow so can't wait! Considering I'll be switching from a 7 year old Acer laptop that's felt like it's on the verge of exploding for the last 2 years it should be some leap regardless. :D

Is it worthwhile upgrading the ram to 16GB or is there really no point at this stage? Atm FM15 is probably the heaviest use it's gonna get as I'm too busy with uni work, although I'm considering not bothering with a PS4/Exbox and just using this for gaming as tbh I'm happy enough with FM, Fifa, a racing sim and a fps these days.

MSI's are great gaming laptops the one you have linked is a little out of date, but competitive at that price. My MSI lasted nearly 5 years with a hinge being its downfall in the end

Shelled out a bit more money because I really liked the product, whilst it also seems powerful enough to run a decent FM game!

Taking FM out of the equation, what are you using this laptop for? That is a serious investment especially if the most tasking application is going to be football manager, I can understand if you are a creative professional rendering massive files, but seriously evaluate what you need and if the fruit logo is worth the premium (I'm not bashing I have iPhone 6 and Ipad air sat next to me here) as my 2 year old laptop that cost £1000 could keep up with that mac in most situations.

Also does running FM and saving save games on the SSD have a noticeable effect on performance. I have rather large custom packs and when loading up or saving in windows mode it will say not responding for like 10 seconds, was wandering if moving to SSD would mean this process is faster?

This is the first SSD I have had and I notice a big difference in speed when playing FM, the loading screens are almost nonexistent, the whole PC runs faster as does any game I have on Steam.

I used to think people were exaggerating when they said Windows started in 5 seconds on a SSD but it seems they were bang on the button.

Reeto - advice time - I got my current laptop (HP Probook i3) from a link I think that Wakers put on here for us, but it's starting to be on its way out and I think it's best if I invest in a new one. So here I am again looking for any advice on a new machine. Requirements:

1. I'd like an i5 or an i7 I think, although I'm not too techy when it comes to spec and stuff so not sure if there's anything out there that rivals those

2. It will mainly be used for work - so I'll need to get Microsoft Office and all that (my old work IT lads installed office for me on this machine, the new work place won't I think)

3. It'll will also be used for using the net and watching streams

4. I might get FM again if I've got a new machine - I like to run quite a few leagues if possible, hence wanting something better than my current i3

5. I could probs spend £500 at most, but I'd prefer it to be as low a price as possible whilst still being a good machine

My laptop is now nearly 3 years old and I'm not sure whether an upgrade is really necessary and if I'd notice the benefits!

My current laptop is a Lenovo Z570, with Intel i3-2350M, CPU @ 2.30Ghz and with 8GB of RAM.

Would it be worth upgrading on this with a £600ish budget? Or will I only get something similar to what I have now?

Hi guys, I've been looking into a new desktop (my laptop is good enough for FM and all other uses but I like playing on a large screen sometimes!).

My question is about solid state drives.

2TB 7200 rpm Hard Drive + 256GB mSATA Solid State Drive - the specs for the Dell XPS 8700.

What does the solid state drive actually do in terms of specs? And how noticeable will it be for FM?

Well it could do with an upgrade altogether to be fair, just don't want a slight upgrade for £600 odd!

Any ideas of a laptop around that price range which will be noticeably better than my one now? (Lenovo Z570, with Intel i3-2350M, CPU @ 2.30Ghz and with 8GB of RAM)

daylight - that was why i asked the question. You have a new machine, it could just be the better memory or processor speed....

I was wondering what it was the SSD does and how much difference THAT makes specifically. It's more a technical question than anything else tbh. Whatever desktop I get it will be much faster than anything I've ever had before!

It is the reading time of the SSD that makes the difference mate, it runs and reads so much faster than a standard hard drive and that is why all programs on the SSD will load and run faster.

You will notice a big difference on any system if you replace a standard hard drive with a SSD.

Yeah I've done it now it really does make a massive difference, normally for games it's not worth it but you have so much loading/reading in this game it seems to very beneficial to do so.

To be honest even on my 4-year old laptop, saving games doesn't take long enough for it to be a hassle. However, it seems most of the new desktops come with SSDs now, so whilst I'm unconvinced about the benefit of it, it's likely I'll have one anyway.

I await your post to say just how great it is to have a SSD and what a difference it makes. ;)

Looked at the tech tab on this page and it says it's display is only 720p - don't think that should matter really for FM though should it? And I'm not going to be using it for any other gaming or watching any shows/films so full HD doesn't matter - just need a good machine really - surely this fits the bill; core i5, 8gb of ram, dedicated gfx etc.

In all honesty Rebel it depends on your budget, you are basically paying for a laptop that is some 3 or 4 years old but with Windows 8 on it.

Personally I would not be over happy with that graphic card or the display, like I said though it really does depend on your budget though.

Cheers Daylight didn't realise it was that old.

Basically I reckon my budget is £500. My i3 is on it's last legs so was hoping I could upgrade to an i5, an i7 is probs out of my budget.

Hi, i am looking too for some new laptop. My Budget is not big, about 400€ (about 310 pounds) i think. I found Acer e5 with amd a6 quad and without windows. and also one HP with a8 quad I am wondering if it is enough for playing FM15. I am playing mostly with 3 leagues and i use also 3d to watch game. It doesn't need to work on highest performance. Hello lads, looking to buy a new laptop from a major retailer ASAP, its a general upgrade but I want it for FM among other things but also would like it to last me 5 or so years if possible!

I have a budget of around £1000 to help me achieve this...

Is a nice looking laptop OneLoveFM, the only 2 things I can see which tbh should not bother you too much.

The SSHD I think does not run as fast as a SSD but I do not think that will bother you as it still runs much faster than an ordinary HD, I believe 4 or 5 times faster.

Also for that amount of money I would want a 17" screen but again that is just personal choice.

It is a very nice setup.

Hi guys,

Apologies, if this is posted in the wrong place but was wondering if the community could offer some advise. I really struggled with FM14 and in the end went back to FM13 where I had some wonderful saves. At the time I said that FM14 would be my last in the series as I'm getting older now and can't commit the time and effort needed.

Anyway, that thought lasted about 1 hour after I realised that my laptop was on its last legs and decided what better way to break in a new one than with the brand new fm15.

My issue lies with what type of laptop to invest in which can support the game comfortably and will last me 3-5yrs minimum. I'm reluctant to go down the Mac route and have been looking at somewhere in the £450-£550 region.

I'm not very tech savvy but from my initial research I'm told the two things that will help run the game efficiently will be a decent processor and a decent graphics card.

These two caught me eye

Just wondering if these two would run the game satisfactory? I don't tend to load up more than 3-4 leagues and find the problems come as I get into the later seasons and then it often results in my PC crawling to a snails pace.

I don't proclaim to be very tech savvy but from my research the things I'm told you need if you want something that lasts more than a few years are decent ram, processor and graphics card. The Lenovo Z510 looks an excellent spec and is the one I'm personally looking to get. It will be interesting to see what others think.

The Lenovo I linked just above is an i7 with an sshd and dedicated gfx...and it's cheaper (even more so with the moneyback Lenovo deal) :cool:

earlier in the thread they said to avoid u series and go for either m, mq or mx. the Lenovo I was on about is also a quad core processor and not a dual core processor.

Nickbridspain.. yeah I aint no tech guy and only through research on comments on here have I found these.

my only concern is that I have never had any Lenovo electricals and not sure how good they are. Anybody on here got Lenovo laptops?

Not going to argue Rebel. As mentioned I'm not a tech person and have only gone on what I've read on the forums. Much like most people on here I'm just looking for something that isn't going to crap after 18 months. If you have advice on what we should be looking at, please feel free to share.

I'm not arguing either...I've been asking for days on here also barely got little reply...as soon as i started posting on otf2 (the otf offshoot website from here) i started to get some proper advice from some of the more serious fm users...after posting my budget and them searching (and debating at length even between themselves) the lenovo i posted is the one they came to that is best for that budget...I'm just waiting on what they say about the gpu, as on the amazon website you can switch between 2...if the most isn't needed I'll just get the lower one...i haven't ordered mine yet, but i will be doing once I've sorted the gfx query out
