Guys,

I am looking for a new desktop, but not really sure about processors or graphics cards.

I'm looking for something that I can play FM on easily and with a fair few leagues, and also to play stuff like Skyrim and the total war games at decent graphical settings. I was looking at this but I don't know if it will hack it..

http://www.amazon.co.uk/GAMING-4100-Quad-Core-DDR5-VGA-DVI-HDMI-DirectX/dp/B005WSOSVC/ref=sr_1_10?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1353178311&sr=1-10

Thoughts or can anyone recommend something for around £500? OS need not be included.

what about monitor etc Dejay? I'm going to assume not.

That one isn't the best.

for example:

http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/saving/show.aspx?id=511129

Just built that in a few seconds on cyberpower... it's a ridiculous machine for that money.

Intel® Core™ i5-3570K Quad Core 3.40 GHz

1TB 7200RPM Hard Drive

8GB 1600mhz RAM

Radeon HD 7770 1GB

Would be perfect it I knew what I was selecting when building one

That's why I've been looking at pre built machines as I don't really know what I'm doing when selecting bits and pieces. I don't need a monitor I have a 22" LG that came with my current machine.

I've built it for you!

You may wish to add certain things like a wireless card (so you can connect to the net wirelessly) etc.. but that's it. :)

It's like buying a car, you should never do so blind... and a lot of the sites online will sell you shoddy machines with cheap parts that are overpriced and worthless.

number 2 in my opinion Frankie..

3rd gen processor, decent onboard graphics and 4 gb ram is more than enough and easily upgradable in the future if needed.

This is the same one isn't it? Or is this one not as good?

eBuyer i can get cashback on Quidco. Just want to check.

There would be a slight performance enhancement - but very slight.

You'll have a faster booting time - and faster load and save times - but it really wouldn't make that much of a difference in the speed of the game.

It's a processing game - the faster it can process the better - so you need a faster processor.

Hi,

I don't post very often but I've been following this thread for a while and have played fm avidly since i was 14.

had a dell xps m1330 and cost over £1,000 about 3 years ago. used to handle fm quite well although when i was about 20 seasons in used to take ages to process.

unfortunately this laptop broke a few weeks ago and im not sure whether to get it fixed or splash out on a new one. has technology progressed that much in 3 years?

in the meantime i am using my girlfriends laptop to play on fm. it hasnt got a dedicated graphics card but the 3d plays okay and with only about 10 leagues loaded, it processes okay.

i just don't know whether to get my old laptop fixed or get a new one.

apart from fm i dont play any other games and do a bit of video editing. edit websites, etc, but i suppose nothing too complex.

any advice what to do?

Doesn't say anything about a dedicated graphics card or not but frankly, the onboard graphics with that would be more than enough anyway.. great laptop.

The first link DOES NOT have a dedicated graphics cards. I believe it's just that integrated intel hd 4000 thing.

There is little to no middle ground from ~$700-1200 dollars, the second link being the next step up with a decent graphics card.

Hey there, just looking for a bit of advice. Currently using a desktop but looking to replace with a laptop. My knowledge of processers, graphics cards etc bit out dated, so not really sure what i should be going for. Laptop will be for watching movies, bit of video/picture editing, surfing the net and of course some FM. Occasional play games like wow, but FPS type games and such i play on xbox, so wont need laptop for them.

Budget is up to £800 or so, although obviously don't need to spend that much just for the sake of it. Can get 15% off Dell laptop's, so been having a look on there, but happy to go with another brand if they are move suitable. Ideally want a laptop that will last for a good few years, and be able to comfortably be able to play FM before having to replace. Any advice appreciated

This laptop is very nice for the price and no need to spend £800. For £550 you really cannot argue.

Hi Eugene/Welsh Ace, which one out of these 2 do you think I should go for?

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5755G_1152339.html

or

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/HP_Pavilion_DV6-6C56SA_1174930.html

How much will the extra 2gb of Ram do? Also storage isnt an issue as I have a NAS cloud drive.

Also I'm not really sure how the 2 dedicated graphics stack up against each other. I will be using it for games other than FM.

Eugene you seem to know your stuff so need your advice.

I have a budget of £450 - £500 tops for a laptop. I am looking to buy a laptop, my main use would be playing FM2013, surfing the web, Skype calls and bits of word processing etc. Anything you can recommend? Ideally I want something that can run FM fast and with the 3D engine not jerking. I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro with 4GB RAM but it is really struggling to run FM2013.

Hi

I am in the market for a new laptop and I would like one that can run around 20+ leagues with lots of players loaded. As I am now a dad I need it to be a laptop so I can follow the baby :) and play when he is asleep. Thus maximium speed is required as time is limited.

My budget is upto £1500. I will not play any other games on the laptop. Realise this is overkill but this will be the main laptop for the next 4 years or so so happy to shell out.

Here is one I have seen; http://www.johnlewis.com/231740122/Product.aspx (realise this can be found slightly cheaper elesewhere)

Can anyone suggest a faster FM laptop for my budget?

Thanks in advance

1500 - that would be plenty and you've loads of options

Firstly 16gb of RAM is loads - 8gb would actually be plenty.

I'd be inclined to reduce the RAM and put more money into the processor. You don't need a wonderful graphics card either.

Basically the same as the one you posted but a bit cheaper http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Samsung_700G7C_1273717.html

500 cheaper http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/MSI_GE70_1285466.html

This is a bit over 1,000 - but it has an SSD and a hard drive http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-081-MS&groupid=959&catid=1828&subcat=

and a few other nice things about it too

But something like this would be right up your alley

Just to note on the two links for PC specialist

The first one I linked to has a Solid State Drive and a Normal Hard Drive

The second one has only a Normal Hard Drive

The Solid State Drive won't make FM run any faster, you will get faster load and save times.

What makes the game go is:

Processor Processor Processor

RAM is nice to have, but 16gb would what you'd need for video editing or editing very large images - for FM it will only use about 2GB RAM - windows 7 will use 1gb RAM - even on a 8 gb RAM system that still leaves 5gb RAM unused (or used by other processes running in the background).

Both of these systems are excellent for playing FM13 - if you can live with 1 hard drive and slower load/save times - and without gaming network card (which you probably don't need) - and without high end sound, 8gb RAM etc. then you can go for the cheaper one.

The processor in both is the same - plenty of RAM - good hard drive space etc.

Thanks Eugene

I like PC Specialist option. Below is what I have spec'd out @ £1321 delivered. With that processor how many leagues would you guesstimate I could run?

8GB SAMSUNG 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (1 x 8GB)

Graphics Card

NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 660M - 2.0GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 11

I can recommend the aforementioned GE70 (or GE60 for 15,6'', depending on your baby mobility needs ;)) or the Lenovo Y580 (15,6''), Mirrorrorrim. They all come in different specs, but the higher end ones should suit your needs while saving a couple hundred pounds eventually. The MSI ones are lighter though, even with a larger Display.

Hey there, just looking for a bit of advice. Currently using a desktop but looking to replace with a laptop.

This is similar to me in as much I want to sell my desktop and replace with a laptop. Are there any websites that might buy my desktop or trade for a laptop or am I just better off going down the private sale route of EBay or Gumtree? Thanks.

I wouldn't sell a computer 2nd hand to anyone - certainly if I was I'd take out the hard drive(s) and burn them.

Your computer can be data mined to reveal all sorts of passwords, bank account details etc.

I'm not aware of any online retailers that deal in buying 2nd hand computers..

Local computer shops.... always buy computers.

I'm sure Cash Generator buy computers.

Thanks mate. Now that I think about it I'm pretty certain I have seen desktops in CEX, although you would still have the problem that Eugene says of data mining, have to take the hard drive out I suppose.
